07. mansion
A month had flown by in a whirlwind of planning, laughter, and more intimate moments than Thalia had ever imagined with Shubman. Their engagement was just a week away, and anticipation buzzed in the air like a live wire.
Tonight, they had decided to meet for dinner at a cozy little restaurant tucked away in a quiet corner of the city, its ambience warm and inviting, the scent of delicious food wafting through the air.
Thalia sat at a small table, a glass of crisp white wine in her hand, swirling it absentmindedly while glancing at her phone. She wore a sleek black satin dress that hugged her curves perfectly, the hemline teasing the tops of her thighs and leaving just enough to the imagination.
The neckline dipped low, and the delicate spaghetti straps highlighted her shoulders, giving her an effortlessly sexy vibe. She had paired it with strappy heels that elongated her legs, and her hair fell in soft waves around her shoulders, framing her face.
Where the hell is he? she thought, glancing at the time on her phone. He had said he would be here in five minutes, but that felt like an eternity. Just as she was about to text him, she caught sight of a familiar figure striding toward her, confidence radiating from him.
Shubman entered the restaurant, looking effortlessly sexy in a fitted charcoal grey blazer over a crisp white tee, paired with dark jeans that hugged his thighs just right.
The fabric of his shirt clung to his defined muscles, and he exuded a casual charm that made her heart skip a beat. His hair was slightly tousled, and as he spotted her, a grin broke out on his face, lighting up the entire room.
"Hey, beautiful," he said, leaning down to plant a soft kiss on her cheek before sitting down. "Sorry I'm late. Traffic was a bitch."
Thalia rolled her eyes playfully, feeling the familiar flutter in her stomach. "You're lucky I'm in a forgiving mood. Otherwise, I'd have had to drink this entire bottle myself."
"Wouldn't be the worst thing to happen," he smirked, pouring himself a glass of wine before leaning back in his chair, his gaze roving over her.
"Damn, you look stunning. That dress is killer on you."
"Thanks! I figured I'd dress up for my fiancé," she teased, biting her lip as she returned his gaze.
Shubman chuckled, leaning closer. "You should wear dresses like that more often. Makes it hard for me to concentrate on anything else."
"Like what? The food?" she shot back, a playful spark in her eyes.
"Honestly? I'd rather just feast on you," he said, his tone dropping an octave, the air thickening with unspoken desire.
Thalia felt her cheeks heat up at his words. "You're incorrigible."
"Only with you," he replied, his voice low and sultry. He leaned closer, their knees brushing under the table, a subtle reminder of the chemistry that crackled between them.
"You know, it's only a week until we're officially engaged," Thalia said, taking a sip of her wine to hide her nerves. "What do you think it'll be like?"
Shubman raised an eyebrow, a teasing glint in his eyes. "Well, if the wedding planning is anything like the engagement planning, it's going to be chaotic as hell."
"Oh, don't remind me. My mom has been on a rampage about the guest list," she groaned, rolling her eyes dramatically. "If she adds one more of her friends' kids, I swear I'll lose it."
"Just imagine how many people are going to show up just to see you in that stunning outfit. I mean, damn," he said, giving her an appreciative once-over. "They're all going to be jealous."
Thalia laughed, shaking her head. "You really think so?"
"I know so. Besides, it's not just the dress; it's the whole package," he said, his eyes locking onto hers. "You're going to steal the show, and I'll just be the lucky guy who gets to call you mine."
The conversation flowed easily between them, laughter echoing softly around the intimate restaurant. Each playful banter pulled them closer, making her heart race with every teasing remark and lingering gaze. As their food arrived, Shubman leaned across the table, his eyes dark and serious.
"Hey, I've been meaning to ask you something," he said, his voice low, slicing through the light-hearted atmosphere.
"What is it?" she asked, suddenly feeling the weight of the moment.
He hesitated, his gaze intense. "I know we're moving fast, and I love that, but are you ready for everything that comes next? Because once we say our vows, it's a whole new ball game, you know?"
Thalia bit her lip, absorbing his words. "I am. I've never been more sure of anything in my life, Shubman. I want this. I want you."
"Good," he said, a smile breaking through his seriousness. "Because I'm not going anywhere. I want to build a life with you, and that's not just talk."
Just then, their plates were cleared, and they were both left with their empty glasses, the tension between them crackling like electricity.
"Let's get dessert," Shubman suggested, his tone shifting back to playful. "I want to see how fast you can eat cake before I pull you out of here."
Thalia laughed, her heart swelling. "You know me too well."
"I know a lot more than that," he said, winking at her. "And I'm looking forward to discovering even more."
As they ordered dessert and shared bites, each moment felt like a celebration, not just of Shubman's birthday but of the life they were beginning to build together.
The restaurant buzzed around them, but in that small corner, it was just the two of them, laughing, teasing, and dreaming about what was to come.
"Okay, just one more bite before we go," Thalia said, holding her fork out. "But only if you promise to feed me."
"Anything for you, Lia," he replied, the heat in his eyes unmistakable.
As she leaned in, their faces close, Thalia realized she had never felt this alive. It was in these small moments that she found comfort and excitement, the anticipation of their future wrapping around her like a warm blanket.
"Let's get out of here," she said, unable to suppress the smile on her face.
"Lead the way, my gorgeous fiancé," Shubman replied, standing and offering his arm.
Together, they stepped out into the cool evening air, ready to embrace whatever adventures lay ahead, side by side.
The night was calm as they left the restaurant, the cool breeze dancing through the city streets. Shubman led Thalia to his car, his hand warm and secure around hers as he guided her into the passenger seat.
As they drove, Thalia leaned back in her seat, the warmth of the evening, the wine, and the food settling comfortably in her belly. Her hair cascaded down in loose waves, and she absentmindedly traced the edge of her wine-glass-stained lips with a finger.
Shubman kept his eyes on the road but couldn't resist throwing occasional glances her way. His fingers tapped against the steering wheel, clearly excited, but Thalia couldn't quite place why.
"Where are we going, Shubs?" she asked curiously, eyeing the unfamiliar route. "This doesn't look like the way home."
A mysterious smirk tugged at the corner of his lips, but he said nothing, just giving her hand a squeeze.
"You'll see, Lia. Just trust me."
"I always trust you," she muttered, her eyes narrowing at his cryptic tone. "But you better not be driving me to some sketchy spot for a late-night surprise."
He chuckled deeply, his voice low and full of affection. "You know I'd never do that to you. I've got something better planned. Just wait."
The anticipation was making her fidgety, and after what felt like forever, they turned down a long, tree-lined road.
She squinted into the distance as they approached a grand mansion, not too big, but certainly not small either.
The stone façade gleamed under the soft glow of the surrounding lights, its architecture both modern and timeless. It was beautiful, elegant, and entirely unexpected.
"Shubman," she breathed, sitting up straighter in her seat. "Where are we? This place is..."
He parked the car, turning off the engine, before leaning over and kissing her cheek. "Come on. I'll show you."
He hopped out of the car and moved swiftly to her side, opening the door for her with a playful smile.
She stepped out, still confused but curious, her heels clicking against the driveway as they made their way toward the grand front door.
"Shubs, seriously," Thalia began, looking up at him, her eyes wide. "What is this place? Why do I feel like something crazy is about to happen?"
He led her inside, the door swinging open to reveal a stunning interior—high ceilings, beautiful wooden floors, and tastefully modern décor.
The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, yet there was something grand about the place.
"This," Shubman started, stopping in the centre of the living room as he turned to face her, "is our home. Or... at least, it will be."
Thalia's breath caught in her throat, and she stared at him, wide-eyed. "What? Our... what do you mean?"
Shubman looked down at her, his expression soft but intense. "I bought this place for us. For our future. I wanted to surprise you. I know we haven't had much time to think about where we're going to live after the wedding, but... I couldn't wait. I saw this house, and I knew it was perfect for us."
Thalia stood there, speechless. Her mind was racing to catch up with the words he was saying. "You... bought this? For us?"
He nodded, his hands slipping to her waist, pulling her gently against him.
"Yeah, Lia. For us. I want us to have a place that's just ours, where we can build a life, make memories... start a family someday."
Her heart pounded in her chest, and for a moment, she couldn't speak. "You... you're serious? You've done all this without telling me?"
"I wanted it to be a surprise," he murmured, dipping his head to press a kiss to her forehead.
"I know how much this next step means to both of us, and I wanted to give you something that shows how serious I am. About us. About forever."
Thalia stared up at him, her emotions bubbling to the surface. "Shubman... this is... I don't even know what to say. This place is incredible. But more than that... the fact that you did this for us?"
He smiled, his hands cupping her face as he pressed his forehead against hers. "I'd do anything for you. You know that, right?"
She nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "I know. But this... this is more than I ever expected. You're... God, you're amazing."
"Damn right, I am," he teased, his thumbs brushing gently over her cheeks. "And you're stuck with me now."
Her laughter was soft, but full of love. "Yeah, I guess I am."
"Come on, let me show you the rest," he said, his voice laced with excitement. He took her hand, guiding her through the house, pointing out the spacious kitchen, the cozy bedrooms, and finally the large, private backyard with a view that took her breath away.
"I can't believe this is real," she muttered, still in awe as she gazed at the lush greenery surrounding the mansion.
Shubman slid his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. "Believe it, babe. This is where we'll start our life together."
She turned in his arms, her heart full. "Shubs, I'm... I'm blown away. I love it. I love everything about it."
"Good," he said softly, his hands tightening around her waist. "Because I plan on making sure you love every single moment of what's to come."
She couldn't help but laugh at the cheeky grin on his face. "You're impossible."
"And you're perfect," he replied, leaning down to press his lips against the soft skin of her neck. "Welcome home, Lia. Welcome to our forever."
Thalia stood there, in Shubman's arms, completely overwhelmed by the surprise of the house and the emotions it stirred in her.
She rested her head against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, and let out a deep breath, trying to process everything.
Shubman tilted her chin up, his dark eyes searching her face for her reaction. "What's going through that beautiful mind of yours, Lia?"
She smiled softly, her fingers playing with the edge of his collar. "I'm just... I'm in shock. You bought this place for us, and I didn't even know. It's perfect, Shubs. I never imagined something like this."
He smirked, leaning down to brush his lips across her forehead. "I told you, baby. I've got plans for us. Big ones. I wasn't going to let you slip through my fingers."
His voice lowered, becoming more playful. "You think I'd let some other guy sweep you off your feet when I can do it better?"
Thalia giggled softly, shaking her head as she leaned into him. "You're such a smooth talker. But it's working." Her eyes sparkled with a teasing look.
"And no one's sweeping me off my feet but you."
He chuckled, holding her closer. "Damn right. You're mine."
They spent the next half hour wandering through the rooms, Shubman explaining his vision for their life there—the kitchen where they'd cook together, the living room where they'd curl up and watch movies, the bedroom... well, he left a lot of room for imagination there, and his playful smirk didn't go unnoticed.
"Shubman, this bedroom is huge," Thalia said, running her hand along the edge of the bed.
"We could fit two of these in here."
"Only one bed needed," he replied with a wink. "As long as you're in it."
She rolled her eyes, but couldn't hide her smile. "You're impossible."
"But you love me anyway." He pulled her into his arms again, lifting her off the floor and spinning her around until she squealed in surprise.
"Shubman, stop! You're going to make me dizzy!" she laughed, her arms wrapping tightly around his neck.
He set her down gently, still holding her close, his forehead resting against hers. "I'm just happy. I've never felt this sure about anything before. You're it for me, Lia. This house, our future... everything just makes sense with you."
Her heart swelled at his words, and she nodded, blinking back tears. "I feel the same. It's like... everything fell into place the moment we decided to do this. And now... this house... it's perfect, Shubs. You're perfect."
He grinned, a cocky glint in his eyes. "I know I am. But you're the one who makes everything worth it."
As they walked out to the backyard, the cool night air brushed against their skin, making Thalia shiver slightly. Shubman noticed immediately, pulling her closer and wrapping his arms around her. "Cold, baby?"
"A little," she admitted, leaning into his warmth.
Without a second thought, he slid off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders, his hands lingering on her arms as he pulled her close again. "Better?"
"Much better," she said, snuggling into the fabric. "But you're gonna get cold."
"I've got you to keep me warm," he said with a grin, brushing his lips against her temple.
They stood there in silence for a while, just taking in the moment. The sky was clear, the stars twinkling above them as the soft hum of the city faded into the background.
It was peaceful, the kind of peace that only comes from knowing that you're exactly where you're meant to be, with the person you're meant to be with.
After a while, Thalia pulled back slightly, looking up at him with a playful smile. "So, when were you going to tell me about this place? On our wedding day?"
He chuckled, his fingers brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "I wanted it to be a surprise. But I couldn't wait any longer. I wanted you to see it, to know that this is where we're going to start our life together."
She smiled softly, her heart full. "Well, you definitely succeeded in surprising me."
"Good," he murmured, leaning down to press a soft kiss to her cheek. "I've got a few more surprises up my sleeve, you know."
"Oh yeah?" she raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued. "What kind of surprises?"
He grinned mischievously, his hand sliding down her back. "You'll just have to wait and see."
She laughed, shaking her head. "You're ridiculous."
"But you love it," he teased, his lips grazing the skin of her neck in a way that made her shiver again, though this time it wasn't from the cold.
"Maybe I do," she admitted, her voice soft as she leaned into him.
Eventually, they made their way back into the house, the warmth wrapping around them like a blanket. Shubman led her back to the living room, where they collapsed onto the couch, exhausted but happy.
Thalia snuggled into his side, her head resting on his shoulder as his arm draped around her. "I still can't believe you did all this," she murmured, her fingers tracing lazy patterns on his chest.
"I'd do anything for you," he replied softly, his voice full of sincerity. "You're everything to me, Lia."
She smiled, closing her eyes as she let his words wash over her. "I love you, Shubs."
"I love you too, baby," he whispered, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "More than you'll ever know."
And with that, they sat in comfortable silence, the weight of the future no longer feeling daunting, but instead, full of endless possibilities.
