ariana immediately ran to the door as the sound of the doorbell rang through her home. she turned around quickly to look in the mirror, adjusting her oversized red christmas sweater before answering her door.

"oh my god!" ariana practically screamed as she was face to face with none other than laura harrier, "i missed you so much!" ariana exclaimed as she wrapped her in a hug.

the two caught up with each other, as they were the only two there for about a half hour.

"my baby!" ariana said as jacob instantly wrappers her arms around her. he let go and stared at her, taking in the moment. they hadn't seen each other in far too long.

the three of them sat in the living room chatting until ariana heard the door fly open, she didn't even have to look to know who it was, "i'm home bitches!" zendaya yelled as she threw her bags down and plopped herself on the couch, taking a seat next to ariana and engulfing her in a hug.

soon enough everyone arrived, and ariana couldn't have been happier. there was only one person missing, tom. the party had started almost two hours ago and he still wasn't there.

"maybe he's just going to be fashionably late," zendaya said, noticing ariana's sad look on her face.

"knowing holland, i doubt its that," she said, "sorry tom," she whispered to herself before laughing.

"he texted me," zendaya started, "he's here. i'll let you get the door," she said, putting a hand on ariana's shoulder, before going off to talk to courtney.

ariana opened the door to reveal tom, and seeing that he was in a black shirt with jeans, he definitely wasn't fashionably late.

she looked to her left to find lili, who was in a red dress with black heels, "you look beautiful!" ariana exclaimed to lili. tom's face fell, ariana didn't even acknowledge his presence.

"you look so cute!" lili replied, ariana stepped aside so the blonde could walk in.

tom quickly following until ariana put her foot down, preventing him from going in, she was mad, but she wouldn't show it, "i would like to talk to you later, if that's okay," she said softly.

tom smiled at her, and boy did that smile melt her heart, "of course. anything for you," he said before he stepped over ariana's foot, and she couldn't help but turn around, look at the boy, and smile as he went to go greet zendaya.

he quickly turned around, "congrats on the new single, again. it's beautiful. he would've loved it."

he didn't even give her time to respond, he turned back around quickly and hugged zendaya.

ariana smiled, "god, i can't believe i making another album about you, holland."

the new york city lights illuminated the night sky, and the cool breeze blew through ariana's hair as she sat down next to tom.

they both opened their mouths to speak, but they both closed them quickly, neither of them wanted to speak first because they didn't want to say the wrong thing.

"things have been—awkward lately," tom said, starting off the conversation.

"they have," ariana nodded in agreement.

there was nothing else to say about it, things had been awkward between them lately. things won't be awkward until tom doesn't have a girlfriend.

ariana smiled, "remember, when you guys stayed here for filming some of homecoming and we'd sit out here all night and just talk?" she asked, finally looking at the boy who was looking up at the stars, just like how he always used to do.

his head was rested on the back of the couch, he turned it so he was face to face with her, "of course i do," he started, "wow, that was over two years ago," he said.

"can't believe i've been putting up with you for two whole fucking years," ariana joked.

tom shook his head, "oh shut up, you know you love me."

his eyes went wide, ariana quickly turned her head away from his face. he meant what he said as a joke, but giving that ariana really loves him, both of them knew it wasn't the best joke to make.

ariana huffed, "so, the whole reason why i wanted to talk to you was because—," she paused, she wasn't one hundred percent sure she wanted to do what she was about to do. she began to fiddle with her fingers as tears began to stream down her face, tom instantly embraced her, holding her in his strong arms that she felt the safest in.

"goodness," she said coming out of the embrace, "you're ruining my makeup," she joked.

"i'm sorry," he said, and even though ariana was joking, he truly meant it because he knew that whatever she was going to say, neither of them would like.

"you could go ahead and ruin my makeup any day, holland. although i wouldn't prefer it be like this," she said and laughed as she watched tom's face flush red.

"i'm just going to say it," ariana began, "i don't think we should be friends," she said almost too quickly but slow enough for tom to hear.

he just looked at her, he didn't know what to say or do, he wanted to cry, but he wouldn't let her see that, "it's just—i love you tom. and-and you said you loved me and then you turn around and get a girlfriend?" she questioned, tom looked down in response, "and i try so hard to be okay with it. to be okay with you being in love with someone who's not me, to watch you kiss and flirt and laugh with the person you love right in front of me, when i love you. but i can't do it anymore. i can't fake like i'm alright tom, and especially after everything i've been through, i don't want to go through this too. not any longer," she finished.

she looked up at the boy and her heart broke, his eyes were glossed, tears threatening to spill at any moment, he was chewing the inside of his lip, trying to think of what to say. he wouldn't look at her. he couldn't otherwise his whole world would come crashing down.

"okay," he croaked as he stood up, "i'll uh—i'll get lili and head out," he said quietly, swallowing the lump in his throat.

ariana watched as tom began to walk to the sliding glass door, she couldn't help but think this was the last time on the balcony. it's almost as if he thought the same exact thing because as if almost on cue, they both turned to look at the night sky, memories of them out on this balcony flashing through their mind. this was their place. where they felt safe, where they would star gaze together, talk about life, and one another's deepest secrets. but both of their minds went to tom's first time out here. ariana had showed him the empire state building, as she felt bad he didn't get to see it because of her.

ariana let out a short laugh as tears streamed down her face a million miles a minute, and looked at tom. he was crying now, bawling. he thought about the time ariana gave him the best piece of advice that he still uses to this day. 'at the end of the day, nobody else's opinion matters. as long as you're proud, that's all that matter.' he let out a short laugh as he felt his tears begin to soak his shirt, and looked at ariana who was already looking at him.

she ran towards him and embraced him in a hug, he lifted her off the ground as she wrapped her legs around his torso.

"i will always always love you. no matter what okay?" ariana said as she pulled away from the hug, tom still holding her off the ground, "don't you ever forget that, you hear me holland?" she asked as she began to choke on her tears, "you hear me?" she questioned again, pointing a finger at his chest.

tom smiled softly at the girl, "i hear you." he said looking into her eyes, "i love you too, grande. and i am so proud of you, you know that right?" he said, the tears falling even faster.

ariana nodded her head, she couldn't speak because of the amount of tears flooding down her face, "i-i know you are. t-thank you."

"and you are the strongest woman i know and will ever know. you have been through so much and you are handling yourself and everything so well. even my relationship with lili—you are handling it so well and i couldn't thank you enough, and thank you for being patient with me while i figure out what i want. who i want. you make me a better person, some of the things i am today is because of things you've taught me these past two and a half years." he said.

ariana reached her hand up to his face and dried his tears with her sweatshirt. she brought her hand to the side of his face, and put her forehead on his, looking into his eyes"thank you, for everything grande," he finished as he set her back on the ground and walked back inside.

"goodbye holland," ariana whispered as she went back to the couch outside and began to cry.
