FLASHBACK

It took two months for Fae to move on from not just her death but her cousins, it was hard really hard to get over the fact she was ACTUALLY dead. Even harder when she found out her cousin was also dead and technically the reason she was dead. Not that she blamed him she just knew that if her teammates weren't distracted by his death they would've caught her. The blonde girl wasn't excited over it, no but she knew nothing could bring her back so there was no point in drowning in self-pity.

"Fae!" A soft voice brings said girl out of her small daydream. Fae's head whipped to the side looking at Dawn who was staring at the blonde with big eyes. Other than Wally, Dawn was the only other person Fae had a real conversation with. "What are you doing?" Dawn smiled at Fae.

"Just thinking." Fae hums staring up at the night sky. "About?"

"Everything. What are you doing Dawn?" Fae quirks a brow at the redhead who sets down a bucket of paint and paintbrushes. "We," Dawn empathizes. "Are going to paint!" Dawn smiles brightly.

"Paint what?"

"Well," Dawn stops to think for a minute before she smiles again. "Each other! We can paint on each other!"

Fae smiles softly at Dawn before she reaches into the bucket grabbing out some paint and brushes. "Give me your hands Bambi!" Fae laughs at the girl next to her, Dawn bursts out laughing shoving her hand in front of Fae.

Fae was sitting next to the chair Wally usually sits in waiting for Charlie to arrive with the most recent dead person. Fae lets out an exaggerated sigh picking at her fingernails. "How much longer can they take? I would really like to go be with Dawn."

"Patience Fae." Mr. Martin tells the blonde girl who says nothing and continues to pick at her fingers. Fae looks up and sees Charlie walking with a dyed blonde-haired girl. "Uh, is this seat taken?" The unnamed girl asks pointing at the chair next to Fae.

"Not anymore," Fae tells the still-unnamed girl. "Used to be Janet's."

"What happened to her?" Before anyone could answer Mr. Martin cut in.

"Alright, Everyone!" Mr. Martin waves Wally over. "Let's get started. I'm glad you finally decided to join us. I'm Mr. Martin." The teacher directs at the girl next to Fae. "Well, we have a new student with us today. Would you like to introduce yourself?"

"I'm good." The girl starts to deny glancing at Charlie as he clears his throat. "Um, sure. Hey. I'm Madison Nears, but everyone calls me Maddie."

"Hi, Maddie." Fae greets the girl sarcastically with the rest of the group glaring at Wally when the boy kicks her foot.

"Welcome to the Split River High Afterlife Support Group. It takes a lot of courage to be here, especially when you're new." Mr. Martin welcomes Maddie.

"Thanks." The girl nods at the man.

"Would you like to tell us a little about yourself?"

"Why do you need to know?" Fae let out a loud laugh at what Maddie said quickly covering her mouth at the looks she was getting from the others.

"Well," Mr. Martin clears his throat. "You could start with how your day is going. Has Charley been a helpful guide?"

"How'd you die?" Rhonda cuts in.

"Okay, Rhonda. Why don't we try to raise our hands if we're going to ask a question?"

"Oh, my god." Fae slowly drags out dragging her hands down her face before she flops back in her chair. "That's the most elementary school I've ever heard, and I've been dead for like thirty years!" Fae laughs.

"Fae!" Wally hisses kicking his cousin's foot.

Maddie clears her throat speaking up. "One minute I was ditching study hall, and then the next I'm here. But I don't know who did this to me."

"Oh, you were murdered!" Wally realizes out loud causing Fae to roll her eyes.

"Welcome to the club." Rhodna bluntly looks at her nails.

Before anyone could speak again Fae stood from her chair. "Well, now I know the new girl! So I'm gonna just go." Fae trails off awkwardly before she starts to walk toward the door. While the girl was walking she could hear Rhodna speak. "She's just cranky she can't be around Lollipop twenty-four seven."

"Lollipop?" "Dawn," Wally speaks up. "Her girlfriend."

Fae then pushes the gym doors open leaving the gym completely.

Fae was walking down the hall looking for Dawn when someone's arms wrapped around her from behind causing her to stumble.

"Fae!" Dawn practically yelled in the girl's ear.

"Dawn." Fae smiled turning holding onto Dawn's arms. "There you are. I've been looking everywhere."

"Well, clearly not if you couldn't find me!" Dawn laughs at her supposed-to-be joke. Fae just smiles at the girl.

"There's a new girl. Her name is Maddie." Fae tells the absent-minded girl next to her as they walk down the hall pinkies locked together.

"How'd she die?" Dawn frowns.

"I don't know didn't stick around for long."

On the other side of the school, Charlie and Maddie walked together. "The alternative is Dawn," Charlie tells Maddie.

"Dawn? That girl's girlfriend?" Maddie questions.

"Fae's girlfriend yes, she died in the 70s. No clue how though but like I said it was the 70s so you know. Cult initiation went wrong drank the wrong Kool-aid or a bad acid trip. I don't know she usually just bops around aimlessly only person she ever really talks to a hangs out with is Fae. But I don't even think Fae knows how she died." Charlie rants.

"When did uh, when did Fae die?" Maddie hesitates to ask. "In the 80s right alongside her cousin." Charlie breathes out, and Maddie nods satisfied with the answer though she is curious about who Fae's cousin is.

Fae was once again getting dragged around by her cousin, this time they were on the search for Maddie.

"Look!" Fae hits Wally's arm pointing in front of them. "There's Maddie."

"Oh! Hey!" Wally drags himself and Fae in front of said girl.

"Hey." Maddie distractingly responds. "Ones not really a good time." Maddie stares at a passing cheerleader.

"Wally Clark!" Wally puts his hand in front of him. "Class of '84. I was laid out by a tackle during my senior year homecoming game, and never made it off the field." Wally explains hand still in front of him. "Nice to meet you."

"Um, Maddie. Current unsolved mystery."

"Yes, we know." Fae butts in. "I'm Fae Smith, Wally's cousin who would've been class of '85. I died the same day as Wally, I was a flier on the cheerleading team and well Wally's neck cracked so loud it distracted them and they did not catch me." Fae stares off into space while explaining.

Maddie stares at the girl with a frown before a thought pops into her head. "Wally Clark? Why does that sound familiar?" "Oh, well they named the stadium after me." Maddie nods in realization. "That must feel nice. Look, I can't really chat right now because I've got some holes in my memory to fill."

"Hey well, that's why we're here! We can totally help you fill your holes." Wally waves his hands around.

"Excuse me?" "Ew, what the fuck!" Maddie and Fae exclaim.

"Oh." Wally shudders at what he said. "Um okay. I obviously did not mean it- for it to come off that way. In my head, it was more of, like a metaphoric. I can help you figure things out, if you need it." Wally stutters over his words.

"Okay, I can handle myself." Maddie cuts Wally off.

"Okay." Wally stops himself.

"And I don't really think I need to take advice from someone who looks like they're headed to aerobics class." Maddie insults.

"Told you, you looked idiotic." Fae shakes her head. Wally shakes his head at Fae ignoring her.

"I'm totally lucky I had this in my locker that day or else I would be walking around with shoulder pads on. Wish I brought my Walkman though or clean socks." Wally sighs. "Or clean deodorant." He adds as an afterthought.

"Wait, were either of you missing anything when you came here?"

"I mean, other than a pulse and a heartbeat?" "My life." Wally and Fae look at the girl like she has two heads.

"Other than that no. No, not really." Wally smiles. "Why?"

"My phone and my backpack they were with me." Maddie then reaches up touching around her neck.

"What?" "Huh?"

"Can you guys stop saying that!" Maddie frustratedly cries out. Maddie goes to follow two people who walked passed them but Wally pulls her back instead.

"Maybe it's a good thing you don't remember everything. Sometimes I wish I could forget." Wally then walks away leaving Fae with the girl.

"Being dead sucks." Fae laughs. "But being trapped in this place, for almost 30 years sucks even more the Tatum Miller did." Maddie just stares at the girl confused about who the hell Tatum Miller is.

"And Mr. Martin is always saying. You'll all get out soon! I'll find a way! There is a way! Like hell there is! If there was, we all would've been long gone by now." Fae angrily yells before she storms away in the opposite direction Wally went in. Maddie just stares after the Fae girl in shock before she starts to follow Xavier.

── ❀*̥˚ ── ❀*̥˚──

Fae was sitting with Dawn when they noticed Maddie pacing down the hall.

"Whatcha doing?" Dawn giggles.

"I don't know what's happening." Maddie heavily breathes.

"You jumped the fence," Fae states as if it was obvious.

"Excuse me?" Maddie asked as the lights flickered.

"You can't leave this place. Happens every time." Dawn shrugs it off. "It's kind of weird at first, but after the third or fourth try, you get used to it. Fifth try it starts to hurt." Dawn's eyes widen looking down at the girl.

Maddie shakes her head weirded out. "I think I'm gonna lose my mind."

"Already there!" Fae shouts after the girl. "Sounds fun." Dawns giggles.

"Something off about her." Fae stares after the girl when Dawn and her laughter stopped.

"I know," Dawn whispers before she leans back into Fae. The two girls now looking out the window that was in front of them, Fae closed her eyes leaning back with her arms wrapped around Dawn listening to the girl hum a song.

── ❀*̥˚ ── ❀*̥˚──

Fae was walking out of the teacher's lounge with a container of brownies and an orange soda when she bumped into Charlie. "Hey!" Fae smiled at the boy who smiled back.

"Hey," Charlie greets. "Have you seen Maddie?"

"Mhmm." Fae nods taking a drink of the soda. "She was being a little stalker and was listening to this boy and a teacher's conversation."

"Lead me to her?" Charlie asks. Fae nods leading Charlie to where she saw Maddie last. Both Fae and Charlie stop in the door frame when they see Maddie and the unknown boy looking out the window standing side by side.

"Thank you, Simon." Maddie suddenly says as if the boy could hear her. Fae smiles sadly though it slowly drops when Simon slowly turns towards where Maddie is standing.

"Maddie?"

"Holly shit." Fae's jaw drops alongside the can of orange soda that was in her hand onto the ground.
