-Chapter 91-
"Queen," a voice whispered. In my tired state, I turned in my sleep and ignored it.
"Queen!" It called again, this time a little bit louder.
I opened my eyes and took in Syn's dark room. He was still asleep beside me so he couldn't have called me. I sighed as I lay back down, I probably imagined it.
"Queen." I heard a whisper in the dark and I immediately sat up once again. I softly shook Syn to wake him but he remained unnaturally still.
"Don't bother. He's in another realm." I recognized the voice and furrowed my brows.
"Wait, what? How are you here, Lilith?"
"I'm not here. Well, at least not there with you."
"How?" I asked.
"It's called astral projection. You're not awake."She said.
What. The. Fuck.
"I'm aware you must be incredibly confused but just trust me."
Trust her? Syn already warned me against this.
"How much of your childhood do you remember?" She asked.
"None of it," I answered honestly. I know I shouldn't have been listening to her words but I was curious. Besides, if she knew about my lost memories, I wanted to know.
"I can show you." She said.
I closed my eyes tightly. Did I really want to know? My faint memories were vivid enough to scare me.
But did I want to remain ignorant? If I found out at least I could prepare for tomorrow.
"Okay," I whispered.
Suddenly in the dark, a small yellow light appeared before me. "Follow it," Lilith said. I hesitantly moved the blanket away from me but remained unmoving.
"Don't be afraid, Queen. I'll be here with you."
"That doesn't bring me a lot of comfort."
"I'm only going to show you a few memories, the rest is up to you to figure out yourself. It's time for you to know the truth."
Reluctantly, I stood up from the bed and followed the yellow light to Syn's door. When I pushed it open I was met with a gentle breeze and walked out. I was now keenly aware of gravel underneath my bare feet. I looked around at my surroundings and saw myself standing in the middle of the street surrounded by houses on either side.
I jumped as I heard a scream from one of them. Unlike I hoped the yellow light moved towards that specific house. "This one is a good memory, Queen. No need to worry go inside." She urged quietly.
At her words, I followed the light and walked to the porch of the house. "Open the door, Queen."
I opened it and when I walked in the screaming became deafening. I covered my ears to drown out the noise but it was useless. I looked up to where the noise was and the light moved in that direction.
I slowly climbed the stairs, afraid of what I was going to see. When I finally made it upstairs I followed the light to a bedroom. I walked in to see a woman lying in a pool of blood as a man held her hand beside her.
"I can't do this! I can't-" The woman cried.
The man beside her kissed her hand and moved her hair out of her sweaty face. "You need to push, my love. That's our baby." The woman smiled as a sob came out of her. She screamed again in pain and held on tightly to the man's hand. "You can do it, baby."
With a nod of determination, she let out the biggest scream of all and I covered my mouth to hold back a sob. With that blood-curdling shriek she sat up in pain and a black cloud came out of her mouth and between her legs.
It lingered in the air for a few moments as the woman collapsed onto the bed. The man and woman smiled up at the black smoke and for some reason that was strange to me. I'd be terrified.
"Come to me, little one." The woman said weakly as she held her arms out.
Little one?
The smoke moved onto her chest and I watched in shock as it turned into a baby. The man cried tears of joy as he laid a blanket over the baby.
"Isn't she supposed to be crying?" he asked.
The woman traced her fingers over the silent baby's features and smiled as a tear fell down her cheek. "Ordinary babies cry, love."
They looked up at one another and smiled. The man kissed her cheek and he pecked the baby's forehead before looking down at it. The baby wrapped its fingers around the man's and he grinned down at it.
"We're sticking with that name, right?" The man asked.
The woman nodded her head and looked at the baby with complete adoration. "Well, then hello Queen, I'm your daddy," he said in a baby voice.
My breath caught as I shook my head. "Is the baby me?" I asked as my eyes watered.
"It is. And those are your parents."I let the tears stream down my face as I watched them hold the baby. They looked happy, so why did they give me up? "Would you like to see more?"
I nodded quickly. "Yes." The yellow light left the room and I tore my eyes away from my parents to follow it. It led me back downstairs and suddenly the smell of bacon and eggs clouded my senses.
"Queen, why aren't you eating?" My "mother" asked. She was beautiful. I looked across the kitchen table to see her looking at a little girl who was staring at a cup of orange juice.
"I'm not hungry," she muttered.
My mother sighed and shook her head. "You know you can talk to me about anything, right?" The girl nodded and gave her mother a warm smile. The man from earlier came through the front door and shook his head as he looked at my mother. "I need to speak with you." My mother nodded. "I'll be right back." She rushed to the man's side and they went into a room. I followed behind them and watched them.
The man ran his hand through his hair. "I got a call from her school. She's being bullied and the counselor has reason to believe she's self-harming."
"Are you serious?" The woman asked.
"They saw a scar on her thigh, and they think she did it because she won't speak to them."
I absentmindedly touched the scar that was on my leg and shook my head. I never remembered where I got it from, I assumed I got hurt and didn't remember.
The woman shook her head and rushed out of the room back to where my younger self was sitting. She crouched by her side and took her hand. "Queen...baby, you don't have to tell me what's going on but you need to be strong. If someone is hurting you, you ruin them. Do you understand me?"
She nodded and her mother smiled at her and glanced at the man. "You get your forgiving nature from your father, he used to be just like you. But the more you forgive, the more people think they can hurt you and we can't have that."
"I understand." The girl said.
My mother kissed her forehead and sighed. "I named you Queen for a reason, and queens don't what?"
"Take shit from anybody," I said at the same time as the girl. No matter how manipulative everyone said Lilith was, there was no way I should've remembered that.
"Language!" The man said as he threw his arms up. The mother and daughter laughed together as they hugged.
"Let's go on, shall we?" Lilith asked.
The yellow light moved towards the front door and I opened it. I paused as I looked through the doorframe at a classroom with bodies lying all over the floor. There were dead children and teachers lying in a large pool of blood and I covered my mouth to keep from screaming.
Who would do this to somebody?
I didn't notice the fire that started in the room until it got larger. This is my dream. I vividly remembered this from the nightmares I had over the past few years. I looked around the room frantically until they landed on a little girl. She was covered in blood with red eyes as she looked down at the scene.
A few moments later she turned and left the classroom. With long strides, I walked after her as the halls around us began catching fire.
When we finally stepped outside I saw my mother standing in front of a car with sunglasses. She was smoking a cigarette casually as she watched the school burn. The girl ran towards her and they enveloped one another in a tight embrace.
"I'm proud of you, Queen." My mouth dropped as a loud sob emerged from deep within me. I was responsible for the slaughter that just took place. My mother pulled away and looked down at younger me. "Always like this. If someone hurts you, always retaliate. Forgiveness is a weakness."
"Let's get out of here, yeah?" A man said. I looked behind my mother to see the man who was my father waiting in the car. I watched as the three of them got in the car and sped away.
"What the fuck?" I muttered.
"There's one more," Lilith said. "And it may be the worst of all. Close your eyes."
With great hesitation, I closed my eyes and suddenly I heard laughing. When I opened them I was standing in a new house in front of my father, mother and me.
"Happy 11th birthday, sweetheart." My father said as I watched him pull me into a hug. How was this possible? I was 11 when I was with Jonathan and Zara.
"Thanks, dad!"
I watched them as they entered into a playful conversation. If I hadn't known any better I'd think we were an innocent and happy family. But we were far from innocent judging from my last memory.
A loud banging at the door disrupted the peace and my father ran to open the door. I watched as a woman with five men behind her stormed in.
"Give us the girl," she demanded.
"Eve, no." My father lunged at her but the guards held him back.
"Eve no? How dare you demand something of me after you left me! I loved you, Adam. And you leave me for her?!"
Adam?!
"Eve. I'm sorry." He said sincerely.
"Sorry isn't good enough." She said as she took out a blade. "Wouldn't it be poetic to die by our own son's weapon?"
I remembered Syn telling me about that. This must've been one of Cains' artifacts.
"Eve please-," My mother cried.
"Shut the hell up!" Eve screamed. "I've been searching for the two of you for centuries. It's time you pay for what you did to me."
My mother said a chant and the men holding my father fell to the floor with a loud thump. Eve laughed softly and whispered something to herself and the walls of the room started glowing with incantations and symbols.
"Thank you for reminding me to do that," Eve said. She turned to her remaining three guards and pointed to my mother and my younger self. "Hold them."
"No!" My mother screamed as the guards held them back. They fought but it was useless compared to the brute strength of the guards.
Eve turned back to Adam with a glare. "Our son died Adam! And you left me! Why couldn't you stay with me as you did with Abel's death?" She whispered sadly.
I didn't even notice I was crying until my tears fell onto my arm. "Because you killed him, Eve. You killed our son, why would I stay?"
"He killed Abel!" Eve growled.
"He was still our son," Adam said.
"His death didn't go wasted. Since he was a murderer I figured it would be fitting to make him into weapons." She held up the blade and it glowed with writing on it. "What you see before you is one of many. It's capable of killing any being in existence, like you and you." She said as she pointed the blade at my mother.
"Eve, don't do this. If you want me to I'll go with you but don't hurt my family."
"I am your family!" She screamed. "I was made for you and I still wasn't enough. Do you realize how worthless I felt? My entire existence was to cater to you and I couldn't do that." She cried.
"It wasn't your fault," Adam said. "It was me, I just-"
"You just what?" She spat.
"I didn't love you."
With an angry scream, she swung the blade and plunged it deep into his chest. I fell to the floor at the sight and cried deeply as I listened to me and my mother scream.
I watched as my father staggered to the floor. His breath became labored and he looked toward my mother and me as the light drained from his eyes.
Eve pulled the blade out of him and she walked to where the guards were holding my mother and me.
"The girl comes with us. Be thankful that I have orders not to kill you."
I watched as my mother wrapped her arms around me and shook her head with sobs wracking her body.
"What's taking so long?" I looked to the door to see my father step in.
"We're almost done King Jonathan," Eve said as she bowed.
"Just give me the girl," he seethed.
I couldn't even think right now. They were all working for my father. The father that had told me he found me in the woods. Did my mother know?
The guards finally managed to tear me from my mother's arms even though I was putting up as much of a fight as I could. "Mommy, no!" I saw myself kick and scream against the guard who had no trouble carrying me.
"Queen, I'll be back for you! Don't forget me," she screamed.
I gasped as I woke up in a puddle of sweat. I sobbed into my hands and I looked up when I saw a hand on my shoulder.
"I'm so sorry," Syn said.
I shook my head in confusion as my heart thundered in my chest, making my ears heat. "Why are you sorry?"
"I went into your mind. I thought you were having a nightmare."
I glared at him and shrugged his hand off my shoulder. "What'd you see?"
"Everything."
