Later that evening, Five and Brileigh stood at the bottom of Avabelle's bedroom window, tossing small rocks to get her attention. She walked over to her window, slightly annoyed from the racket they were causing, and opened it.
"Okay, you guys can climb that tree and come in—" she began to say, but the two teleported inside instead, startling Avabelle.
"Okay, that's going to take some getting used to," Avabelle exhaled. "So, let's talk."
"How about we ask some questions?" Five suggested, sitting on the edge of her bed as Brileigh leaned against the wall, her arms crossed over her chest. "When is your birthday?"
"October 1st, 1989," Avabelle replied, raising an eyebrow when she noticed Five's eyes grow wide.
"So were we..." Brileigh muttered. "So you're like us? You have an ability, too?"
Avabelle nodded. "I learned that I could control and create electricity when I was about four years old. Deep down, I knew I wanted to keep my powers a secret, so I've never told anybody, especially not after the Umbrella Academy kids became popular. I didn't want to be put in danger like they were. I'm assuming you guys are part of the UA?"
"Nope, just Five," Brileigh nodded in his direction. "I never lived in the UA, I've been in the foster system my whole life."
"Well, I was in the UA, until I time traveled to the future," Five added. "Continue."
Avabelle sighed, raking her hand through her hair. "I'd been in-and-out of foster homes, too, until this family adopted me, and in my last home I found a briefcase. I opened it and it took me here, to Hawkins in 1984. I ended up in the foster system once again when Chief Hopper found me wandering around by myself, and then the Valdezs adopted me. They really care about me, and I care about them too, so part of me doesn't want to leave and go back to my proper time period. But I'm afraid of what could happen when 1989 approaches, the year we were born. That's why I fear the Handler will find me again, this time not just warning me, but taking me back to my time."
Five and Brileigh exchanged looks, wondering if they should tell her their plan. Brileigh decided to speak up, "Well, we have a plan that could maybe avoid encountering the Handler? We want to try to go home at some point, or anywhere we can find a clue, on how the apocalypse we saw in the future started; that way, we know how to prevent it from ever occurring. But we figure the only way we can get home is if we combine our abilities, but Five and I may not be strong enough to do it alone... do you think you could help?"
Avabelle hesitated. "Jeez, did you not hear a word I just said? I'm happy here! I found a family that actually wants me and treats me well, I found friends that actually like me and I don't have to say goodbye because I'm moving to another foster home! Maybe it's selfish, but I don't want to give up everything I've gained from being here. Maybe I'm in the wrong place, but it feels like the right time because I've finally gotten what I've dreamed of my entire life. Don't you understand, Brileigh? Isn't this what you'd want, too?"
Brileigh stared down at her fidgeting hands in her lap, giving a small nod. "You do have a point."
"But," Five began. "Maybe, if we prevent the end of the world, you can come right back to this time. If you think about it, you living here and you being born in 1989 are two different time lines. You created an alternate time line when you time traveled here, so even though you're technically going to be born in four years, it won't affect you here."
"Really?" Avabelle's eyes sparkled with hope and a tinge of excitement. "So, you're telling me that if I help you guys, you can take me back here and it's like I never left? And I won't mess with the time line to where the Handler would get me?"
"I don't know much about the Handler, but I promise we would take you right back here," Five smiled.
"Okay, I'll do it. Only if you promise to take me back," Avabelle stuck out her hand.
"Promise," Five shook her hand, sealing the deal.
"I have a suggestion for the two of you," Avabelle began. "You should stay here since you have nowhere else to go and do not want to be caught by Hopper. Just lay low so my parents don't catch you. And also, you should enroll in Hawkins Middle School with me and the others, to really keep you out of Hopper's eye."
"School? Ugh!" Five groaned, Brileigh nodding.
"We'll do it! It's the least we can do for asking you to help us," Brileigh grinned as Five whined.
