Brileigh awoke in the backseat of a car, instantly recognizing the two people seated in the front once her eyes focused all too well.
"She's up, Shirley," The man in the front passenger seat, Jake, announced to the woman driver.
"Good morning, sunshine," Shirley greeted sarcastically while eyeing Brileigh through her rear view mirror as Brileigh sank down into her seat.
Shirley and Jake has been her social workers for as long as she could remember, always being the first ones she saw from the backseat of a car whenever she awoke from one of her "blackouts". And of course, they would always interrogate her about why she blacked out once they got to their office.
Soon enough, Brileigh was guided into the familiar office room that belonged to Shirley, who sat behind her desk as Jake sat next to Brileigh, making sure she wouldn't escape or something; she never even attempted it since she knew there was no way out of her interrogation.
"You already know the drill," Shirley sighed as she rested her arms on her desk, lacing her fingers together as she leaned forward slightly. "What did you do, Brileigh? What did you do to Mr. Houston?"
Just like always, Brileigh shrugged as she stared down at her fidgeting fingers in her lap. "I don't know what happened," she mumbled. "All I remember is screaming and then blacking out."
"Why were you screaming?" Shirley got out a binder and pen from inside her desk; the typical black binder that had every single one of Brileigh's "blackout" reports in them.
"Mr. Houston was hurting me," Brileigh replied. "And it felt like an instinct, just like the last time and the time before that and all the other times before that... screaming felt like an instinct. And just like always, I blacked out. I don't remember anything that happened after that and hardly anything before or during it."
"I see," Shirley nodded as she jotted down her notes. She then closed the binder and sighed. "Brileigh, I don't know how else to say this; you need to get your act together, you need to stop disobeying your foster family members and their rules, or else you'll never get adopted—"
"I'm disobeying their rules?" Brileigh began with a slight laugh. "Well, what if I don't want to be adopted then? I think I'd do much better on my own, if you ask me, where I'm not treated like I'm just a worthless piece of shit—"
"Language!" Jake interrupted.
Brileigh rolled her eyes before continuing, "Or that my only purpose in this life is for other's sexual pleasure. It's a sickening life I've been living in the foster care system, and I know I could be in a much worse situation, but to me right now? There isn't much that seems worse." She then got up out of the chair and stormed off, Shirley and Jake calling after her as she ran out of the office and out into the streets.
Brileigh ran as fast and as far as she could before she stopped to catch her breath, leaning against the wall of a small shop on the corner. She felt her eyes watering, clouding her vision, as the anger in her continued to rise.
She covered her wet eyes, silently crying to herself before hearing a clap of thunder, rain pouring down seconds later. Brileigh let out a frustrated sigh, throwing her hands down from her face when all of a sudden, a bright vortex opened right in front of her, catching her off guard as she tripped and fell through.
She landed chin-first on the hard, concrete ground, groaning as she pushed herself up off the ground and back onto her feet. Something was different; she seemed to be in the same place, except the sky wasn't dark and stormy, and puddles didn't cover the ground. Instead, the sky was a bright blue, no puddles to be seen.
"What the hell?" Brileigh muttered to herself. Something isn't right. She then headed into the small corner shop, running over to the first person she saw.
"Um, excuse me? Can you tell me what today's date is?" She asked a man who was standing in front of the fridges in the back of the store.
"It's March 23rd, 2004," The man replied, looking at her like she had three heads.
"Oh... thank you," Brileigh said before walking out of the store. 2004? But it had just been October 1st, 2003, my 14th birthday.
How the hell did I end up in the future?
Brileigh then remembered the weird vortex that appeared in front of her; she wracked her brain and thought back to how it had appeared before her like magic. Could she have caused it? What could she have done to make a vortex magically appear before her, that could make her travel several months into the future?
What did I do? I ran off, leaned against the corner shop, and threw my hands down out of frustration... did the force of my hands open this weird, time traveling vortex?
Well, I guess there's only one way to find out.
Brileigh took a deep breath, her heartbeat pounding in her ears being the only sound she could hear and focus on at the moment. She then stared straight ahead down the street, focusing, before throwing her palms out and creating a vortex in front of her.
"Woah! Awesome!" She beamed, before walking right through. She laughed to herself, admiring how incredible her newfound abilities were. Could I be like one of those kids from The Umbrella Academy? With the cool abilities and such? I was born on the same day...
Brileigh then opened up another vortex, and another, and another, laughing and grinning and having the most fun she'd had in years before all of a sudden she tripped over something and fell on her chin once again.
Brileigh groaned and stood up again, wiping her chin and looking at her bloody index finger. "Great, now my chin is bleeding," she sighed and looked down at what she had tripped on, gasping at the sight of a dead woman covered in debris.
"Oh my god..." Brileigh looked around; every building was burned or burning, not a single person alive in sight, the air smelling of smoke and ash. She scanned the environment and spotted a newspaper on the ground, grabbing it and reading the date at the top: April 1, 2019; she had traveled over 15 years into the future from the last time she checked the date, to the exact day of the end of the world.
Oh my god, I time traveled to the end of the world; man, I am in deep shit.
