Chapter 20

This is going to be the last chapter that has to do with the Olympia, and our babies from Perfectly Imperfect will bade us farewell 😪😪. You'd agree that they brought a lot of drama to this book.

Trust me, the drama in this book is only just starting.

Let's dive in.

↭ELYON↭

"Forget! Today's game will be hot." Vanessa hollered and I chuckled, feeling the excitement radiating from her. If only I could feel that excited.

It was noon, an hour to the Volley ball tournament that will decide the fate of our school for The Olympia. We couldn't get the Academic Trophy, thanks to Somadina. I just hope we are able to get this one. Now, we were getting ready in the locker room, putting on our gears.

"But also, the fate of the entire school rest on our shoulder. If we win this, we are getting the sports trophy, if not Crescent is getting two trophies. I'm dead nervous." I told her and she chuckled.

"You don't have to be." Idera, a girl on the team as well chipped in from the side. "I've seen their girls practice and they are not half as good as we are." She stated, pride laced in her voice.

"Shhh!" Skye hushed harshly as she walked into the room. "Don't jinx it abeg. If you say something about us winning, then you are jinxing us and we might lose." Skye stated matter of factly. I chuckled, shaking my head at her.

"Skye, you are not even on the team." Vanessa chipped and Skye responded by sticking out her tongue at Vanessa while I laughed at their childish antics. Truly, Skye wasn't playing Volleyball with us. She has done her own fair share of sports for the Olympia.

"Thirty minutes more, girls!" Coach Tammy hollered, interrupting our gist and blowing her whistle so loud, we Al had to cover our ears.

"God knows that if she blows that whistle one more time, I'll legit walk up to her, snatch it and crush ut." I told my girls and they laughed. I joined them as well, knowing exactly why they were laughing.

I can't try that in a thousand years. I don't have that kind of mind.

"You won't even dare, not if you don't want to get expelled." Vanessa stated.

"I think the only time you will do something like that is on the day of our graduation. Specifically, after you collect your testimonial because you don't want to take any chances." Skye chipped in and I laughed.

"I'll pass, thank you o. Eyin alakoba." I teased.

"You are just too timid jhor. Me, I'll try it. Just be on the look out." Vanessa vowed and my mouth widened as I heard the determination in her voice. She wasn't kidding.

"Nessa!" Skye exclaimed, laughter laced in her voice. Vanessa shrugged nonchalantly.

"What? Consider it a revenge for dragging me to play volleyball." She smirked deviously. I shook my head, chuckling to myself as I wore my knee pads.

My mind drifted to the statement Skye made about graduation. It was just a passing statement but it definitely made me think. Graduation from high school was a big deal, a very big deal. I haven't really been able to think of what happens afterwards.

Don't worry, you still have mine months to decide. A voice in my mind said and I heeded to it.

I still have time. I told myself.

I looked around, watching as the girls were all huddled up on groups, getting ready and at the same time chatting. They didn't even seem concerned about the game like I was. Then I noticed, only one girl was alone, on her own, not talking to anyone else.

Or rather, no one was talking to her.

Tolani.

What's up with her these days?

"Am I the only one seeing Tolani so quiet?" Vanessa asked, jerking me out of my thoughts. I was thankful that I wasn't the only one who noticed it.

"You noticed too?" I asked her, my voice in a harsh whisper. The last thing I wanted was for her to know that we were talking about her, especially since she was just a few feet away from us.

"I bet one million naira that she's plotting something at the moment." Skye spat, her voice laced with disdain and I looked at her incredulously.

Skye has always had a subtle hate for Tolani, up until the day Tolani had insulted Jamal, Skye and their family. Since then, Skye has openly shown her despise for Tolani. Just like everyone else.

Except Jamal apparently.

I haven't been blind to the fact that they talk on occasional basis. As much as I didn't want it to disturb me, it did.

Don't think about it.

"I don't know about that one o. But sha, I should be scared." Vanessa stated and I chuckled.

"You girls are so extra." I said, not wanting to say anything further.

Coach Tammy called Vanessa and the latter grumbled some inaudible words before she answered the woman. I decided to change the conversation, asking Skye a question that has been buzzing in my head since yesterday's basketball game.

"Have you seen Khalil since yesterday?" I asked Skye who in turn looked at me skeptically before shrugging nonchalantly.

"Mateo told me that he didn't come back to the room yesterday. He's been at the infirmary since the show down at the court." She explained, her tone indicated that she didn't really care. It even made me extra curious about the strain between the cousins.

"It's good for him." That statement had me widening my eyes.

"Skye haba. That's your cousin." I chided.

"What? He should have thought twice before picking a fight with Kunle." Skye shrugged, seeing nothing wrong on the statement she made.

"You were not even there to see how it started. How are you sure it wasn't Kunle picked a fight with him?" I asked her and she shrugged again.

"I've known Khalil to be a trouble maker all my life. There is definitely no way someone as calm as Kunle woulda picked a fight with him. It's definitely the former." She maintained her stance and I sighed, not knowing what else to say because she obviously knew Khalil better than me.

I've only known him for like how long? Two months?

"What could have even sparked such brawl between the two guys?" I asked rhetorically.

"Whatever it is, I am still very certain it was Khalil's fault. See that he didn't fight back." She stated.

"There was a reason the fight happened." A voice came from few feet away. Skye and I turned to see Tolani looking at us, a grown creased across her forehead.

Who called her?

"Excuse me?" I asked her and she scoffed, picking up her duffel bag.

"There was a reason that fight happened." She repeated then turned to look at Skye. "And before you judge the guy, at least know the facts first." She added then walked out of the room, leaving Skye and I awestruck.

What was that?

"Is this babe trying to do a competition on who knows my cousin better?" Skye asked rhetorically then laughed, clapping her hand like a typical African mother. I shook my head, trying to register her words.

"Since did she start defending Khalil? Are they friends?" I asked Skye who scoffed in return.

"More like fuck buddies." She deadpan and my eyes went huge as saucers.

Khalil and Tolani?

Ewwww.

Skye must have noticed the look on my face because she laughed.

"Are you surprised? Don't tell me you haven't been seeing them sneaking around." She said and I shook my head. I definitely haven't been seeing them sneaking around.

Maybe because you are always with Jamal. My subconscious mocked me and my lips quirked to the side slightly with a smile.

"I definitely haven't been seeing them sneaking around. How long has it been going on?" I asked and she shrugged.

"I'm not sure, but definitely before this competition. They were gees back in the day when we were younger. Guess they reconnected, only that this time, it's just...ewww, I can't even think about it." Skye shuddered and I chuckled at her expression.

My mind went back to what she said.

"But, even as much as I hate to admit it, I think she's right about us knowing facts before we conclude that Khalil was the one that caused the fight. We don't really know Kunle and for all we know, he was probably the one that caused trouble." I tried to reason with Skye. The last thing I wanted was to take sides.

"Elyon, believe someone that has known Khalil for as long as my entire life time. This guy is a troublemaker." She maintained and I sighed, "and trust me when I say, you need to stay away from him." She added, her voice calm.

That statement made me frown. Jamal keeps saying the exact same thing but when I ask for reasons, I get nothing. It was frustrating. Yes, I should trust them because they have known this guy longer than I have, but the fact still remains that the last time they saw him, even spoke to him, they were young, very young.

Even with whatever he did back then, shouldn't there be at least a benefit of doubt that he was more mature now and way better.

Because that's what I feel.

Don't get ahead of yourself, Elyon.

Before I could think any further, the blaring of whistle tore through my reverie and I cussed.

"It's game time, girls! Let's go!" Coach Tammy Screamed then blew her whistle again.

"On God, I'm going to break that woman's whistle Las Las." Skye spat out and I chuckled, carrying my shoes out as I followed the rest of the girls.

Let's go win that cup.

I hope...

𖣔JAMAL𖣔

"Mehn, this game will be hot fam." Mateo hollered, a grin marrying his face. I chuckled, looking around the huge indoor stadium, where every school was seated.

Well, every school except Atlantic Hall that was caught cheating during the Semi Final Volley Ball game. They were sent home immediately, leaving Citadel in Third Place for the Sports event. Today would determine who was getting the Sports Trophy. Limelight Trojans or Crescent Enigmas.

To say I was nervous was an understatement. And I was one hundred percent certain that Elyon was feeling the same way too.

Yes, I know my girl that well.

"I won't call a female game hot." Somadina decided to open his stupid mouth to say that. I shot him a look of disapproval.

"You are only saying that to make yourself feel better for fucking us up at the football game." I shot back at him and he glared at me, but said nothing in return because he knew I was right.

We were acing it at the first half of the football game two nights ago until Crescent High Enigmas decided to double their A game at the second half, leaving us tied till it was dying minute. Lets just say, frustrated Somadina isn't the best Somadina to be around. He pushed a player from Crescent in the 18th box...

Crescent High Enigmas ended up leading us with a goal, winning the football game.

It was a bad day for us.

Hopefully, the girls would help us when the Sports event in total.

"Plus, your girlfriend is playing with them. Maybe you should choose your next words wisely if you don't want her to castrate you." Mateo chipped and I laughed at Soma's horrified expression, shaking my head.

The commentators began, hyping the teams that were coming up. I kept my eyes on the doors, waiting for the girls to burst through them. I felt someone beside me and I turned to see Skye taking the vacant seat by my side. I furrowed my brows, wondering what she was doing here.

"Are you not supposed to be on glucose and water duty?" I asked her and she rolled her eyes at me.

"I can't kill myself abeg. I bailed." She stated nonchalantly before turning to look at me fully with big doe puppy dog eyes and a grin spread across her face. She wanted something.

And I knew what she wanted.

I rolled my eyes and made room for her to pass. "You don't even have to ask. Yes, we can switch seats." I answered her unasked question and she winked at me before switching seats with me so she could be closer to Mateo.

Wahala for who no have boyfriend or girlfriend oo.

My head unconsciously made a turn to look behind me and my eyes landed on Khalil's figure, at the further back on the bleachers. I wouldn't have known it was him if I  wasn't too familiar with him.

He was clad in all black, hanging his head so that no one could see his face. Black hoodie that he used to hide his battered face and black ripped jeans. I was still very much curious as to what had sparked the brawl between him and Kunle yesterday. I confronted Kunle in the evening when he and Adam had gotten back to the room.

His simple reply was "he asked for it."

Not that I have any idea what that means.

As if knowing that someone was watching him, he rose his head, his eyes meeting me. His gaze made me shudder. It was cold, dark and dare I say, it was scary. The dark circles around his eyes didn't help matters.

I quickly averted my gaze, swallowing.

What kind of witchcraft is these? How can someone instill so much fear just by one look?

This, whatever it is, isn't normal at all.

"Hey." Mateo's voice jerked me out of reverie and I turned to look at him. His brows were furrowed, his gaze watching me intently.

"Are you okay?" He asked me. I was quick to smile, even though I was very certain Mateo could see right through it.

"I'm fine." I told him. He looked at me for a while before looking away. I heaved a sigh, trying to calm my racing heart.

The whistle blared and the player bursted out of the doors, the crowd cheering. Elyon was the last player to come out, right beside coach Tammy, the ball in her hands. Every negative I felt early sipped away as my lips stretched in a smile.

On cue, her head went up and I saw her eyes searching through the crowd. I knew she was looking for me. And she found me. Her lips stretched in a small smile and her hand lifted in a wave. I waved back, feeling my cheeks hurt with how much I was grinning.

This is what everyday should feel like. Too bad that's not how it is.

The whistle blared again.

It's game time.

"It's five minutes on the clock and the Enigmas are leading with 18 points to 16points for the Trojans. I definitely had no idea this was going to be a tough one." The commentator's voice blared through the speaker and I  wanted nothing more but to break it.

Coach Tammy called for a time out and the girls quickly went to her, huddling around her.

"I swear, I want to break that speaker." Mateo growled, voicing out my thoughts. Somadina just sighed, scratching his head.

"We underestimated them, they are good." Skye stated and I sighed. It would be terrible if Crescent High got both Academic and Sport trophy. Especially since Limelight has always been a sport legend.

The whistle blared back and the players got back to the court. I could see and also feel the agitation from our girls. Vanessa looked like she was going to cry any moment. Frustration was written all over their faces, especially on Elyon's.

I prayed silently that a five minutes miracle will happen.

They began to play again, Enigmas serving first. The girl went to the end of the court and held the ball in her left hand, then threw it up, using her right to slam it over the net, to Limelight's side. Everyone was on their toes, looking for who would be able to slam it back.

Tolani did.

I've never seen anyone jump that high before but then she jumped, using her hand to slam it back into Enigmas side. The latter weren't expecting it so they missed, the ball hitting the floor, scoring one point for us. The entire SS3 student body lipped off their feet and screamed with joy.

My mouth hung open in shock, still awestruck at how Tolani had won that point.q I watched has the girls hovered around Tolani, a sign that showed they were thanking her for that save. I couldn't see her face but I knew she was happy.

"How did she jump that high!" Somadina asked, adjusting his glasses like that would help decipher the question.

The whistle blared again and everyone got back to the game. We now had two minutes and we were still down by one point. We needed two to win.

Tolani was serving and everyone was agitated.

She took the slam and it landed straight into the court of Enigmas. Another point for us, making us draw.

"As much as I hate to admit it, Tolani is badass!" Skye hollered and I laughed, looking back at the court in time to see Elyon give Tolani a small part on the shoulder and the latter smiling back. It was just for a flit second but I saw it.

Wawu.

Last serve. That was all we needed to win.

And Tolani made that serve, just five seconds to the end of the time. The ball landed on the court just as the whistle went off. The exact same time the entire student body jumped into the court, screaming the place down in celebration as they went to celebrate with the players.

We won!!!

Skye screamed, jumping on Mateo, wrapping her leg around his middle and almost knocking the both of them over. Somadina stood on the chair, waving his jacket over his head and s reaming his lungs out while I laughed.

Mad people everywhere fa!

Then the trio dashed off with the running crowd, going to celebrate with players.

I was just about to run off when I saw Khalil take off in a direction, hands shoved into his pocket, leaving the stadium. I frowned.

But before I could think more about it, I felt a hand wrap around my middle and I looked up to see Elyon looking up at me, a grin marrying her face. A smile automatically spread across my lips.

"We won!" She screamed and I laughed heartily. She made a move, trying to hoist herself up and I helped her, my hand moving to her bare thighs and hoisted her up effortlessly. Her leg wrapped around my waist, her arms steadily around my neck while mine rested around her waist.

Her gaze held mine, a smile on her lips.

"We could get expelled for being in this kind of position." She stated, humour laced in her voice.

"That's very unlikely." I smirked, looking over her shoulder to where Somadina was stealing kisses from Nessa, openly. Coach Tammy was just few feel away from them, not doing nada.

"We are not on school grounds." I winked and she giggled, resting her face in my chest.

"You did good today." I said and she rose her head up to look at me. "At least we have one trophy." I added.

"Actually, it's all thanks to Tolani. She helped us pretty well." Elyon replied. I noticed the undertone in her voice. It was obviously hard for hard for her to admit that sort of thing.

It was hard for everyone to.

But then she did help.

"Come on." I dropped her gently, holding on to her hand. "Let's go meet the guys." I said and she nodded then we walked together to where everyone was still gathered, also with some guys from Crescent High.

From the corner of my eyes, I saw Tolani slip out of the stadium. Before I could give it much thought, Elyon tugged at my hand, dragging my mind back to the present.

⁂KHALIL⁂

I was pacing the length and breath of the supply closet my hand jammed into my pocket. I looked at the wall clock just up ahead and sighed. It's been twenty minutes some she saw my message. She should have been here.

Except she actually doesn't want to see me.

I needed to make things right, wanted her to know how sorry I was, how much I wanted to...

My train of thought was interruppted when I heard shuffles behind me. I looked back to see her, just standing few feet away from me and I let out a breath I didn't even know I was holding. I gave a small smile which she didn't return.

Expected.

"I didn't think you'd show up." I started and she shrugged.

"I wasn't going to, but then I had a change of mind." She replied, her expression somewhat stoic but I didn't miss the way her lips were twitching. That was a good sign.

"I'm in a very good mood today, you should be thankful." She added and I let out a chuckle, involuntarily. I moved closer to her, until I was just feet away from her. I noticed the way she wrapped her hands around herself, a familiar gesture.

She was self conscious.

Since when?

"Saviour of Limelight Academy." I teased and Tolani cracked, chuckling which generated into a full blown laughter. "You are definitely getting a medal and more attention." I added. Her laughter subsided and she began to shake her head, her lips turning in a small smile.

"I don't think a few goals and helping the school win the Sports event will change the way everyone sees me." Even with the smile playing on her lips, the undertone in her voice couldn't go unnoticed.

It made me feel even more guilty for speaking to her in that manner and I knew nothing I would say at the moment would erase the way those words had affected her. Especially since they came from me.

Her supposed friend.

So, I hugged her instead. She wasn't expecting me to pull her into my arms. This wouldn't be the first time we would hug but this felt incredibly different, had hidden meanings to it. She relaxed against me, wrapping her hand around my middle.

Tolani and I had a rather complicated relationship, but that didn't undermine the fact that she was the only friend I had here and she was the only one who knew me, just as much as I knew her. And no matter what, I shouldn't have spoken to her the way I did. It was wrong because I was sure she would never speak that way to me.

"I still haven't forgiven you." She said, her voice muffled into my shirt. I chuckled, holding her tighter.

"I know."
