Chapter Five: Clubs
Him, or he, the student council president, is an interesting one indeed. Many rumors circle around him, as they do with many other student council members. But his rumors, are strangely more positive than they are negative. He is rumored to already be married at the age of 18, rumored to be a noble, and even rumored to be the next legendary Crowned Scholar. He is very admirable man, but he is not after the rumored ambitions he said to be after...

Soon, 5th period was over, and lunch and clubtime had begun. Students were walking throughout the halls, looking for their clubs, or on the benches chatting. Callisthenes walked up the stairs to the 5th floor with his packaged lunch, which was the floor for all of the clubs. The clubs were located in the middle building only, and thankfully, the 5th floor was very spacious and had many benches to relax and eat lunch on. The only problem for Callisthenes is that almost all of the benches were full, and the ones that were completely empty with no one sitting on them were covered in unsanitary stains. He grimaced at the dirty benches, and tried to look for an empty bench that was clean. At this point, he didn't care if it was empty or not. He just needed a place to eat his lunch and wait for Arthur to show him around.
He luckily managed to find one bench that had an empty spot, but the bad thing was... Is that the bench had a bunch of suspicious girls. The three girls were close to eachother, whispering and giggling to eachother whenever they saw a boy walk by. One girl was wearing a varsity jacket over her uniform, that had said "LISTEN TO PAEKUL", another girl having extremely weird eyeliner, and the last girl had a light blue badge on her vest that had a message written on it in some kind of different language. He felt like he was going to regret sitting next to them, but he had no choice, and sat on the bench quietly.
Callisthenes opened his lunch, ignoring the whispers of the women, and took a look to see what his great aunt had packed for him. (Diced apples and some baby carrots... And a chocolate chip cookie. I feel like I'm 10 just looking at this... But hey, it's better than the crappy food in the cafeteria...) He thought as he brought the diced apples and a spoon out. He opened the top of the see-through box that held the diced apples, and scooped some of them up to eat. While he was waiting and eating his lunch, he decided to try and read the book he wasn't able to read back in first period, "Naoya The Dog." He ate some of the dice apples and flipped to the first page...
"So that's the criminal juvenile?" The girl with the weird eyeliner whispered to the varsity jacket girl. "Uh huh, he's definitely the one." she replied. "I heard he doesn't have a girlfriend either... I'm not interested in him for an oppa, he's more of your type, Yanny." The girl with the badge said to the varsity jacket girl, presumably Yanny. "Maybe you're right, Lyn... Maybe we can even convince oppa to be one of us stans..." Yanny whispered, smiling devilishly. At that moment, rain started to fall hard against the rooftop of the school instantly. More students began to create traffic in the hallways. Yanny's smile quickly faded. "I better do this quick, so he doesn't pull something on me. Lyn, Lauretta, watch my back." Yanny whispered to them. "Yes, we will." The two of them said, creepily in sync.
Callisthenes soon finished his packaged lunch, and got up to throw it away. He began to get absorbed in the story since it had began to just get interesting, and Arthur wasn't there just yet. He sat back down, and began to read the book, sounds of other students beginning to fade out.
Naoya sat down and looked up at his owner happily, his tail wagging and his tongue bobbing. ''Naoya... I love you. A lot! And I want you to remember that!'' Huong said, tears coming to her eyes. Although Naoya didn't understand her completely, the word 'love' had interested him. He wanted to say 'love' back, but he was a dog. He barked and whimpered, worried to why the little girl was crying. "Excuse me?" ''Naoya... I will be gone for a long, long time.'' Huong said, her voice now hoarse. ''But I did not want this! Mommie wanted you gone, so I had to let you go!'' "EXCUSE ME??"
Callisthenes turned around annoyed, ready to blurt out an angry insult, but immediately held himself back when he saw the varsity jacket girl sitting next to him, ignoring his personal space. "Y-yeoboseyo, sorry about that, oppa-senpai, I just had to get your attention..." The varsity jacket girl said, looking away shyly as her friends giggled. (Oh god, I recognize this...) He thought in his mind as he made a confused look at the girl. "I don't want to deal with you, right now. I'm waiting for a friend." He said firmly, getting up and closing his book. "Don't be like that, oppa-senpai... You know you want me..." She got up as well, putting her hand on his chest. At that moment, Callisthenes's mind went temporary blank. "Why don't you join our club...? We sarang handsome criminals like y-" Callisthenes's arm was suddenly jerked away, and he was soon being pulled farther and farther away from the girls.
Once he felt his mind become sentient again, he looked up to see Arthur smiling at him, but with angry eyebrows. He seemed mad, but also amused. "Here's your book, Callisthenes," He gave Callisthenes his book calmly, and shook his head. "Don't you know who those women are?" He asked him angrily. "U-Uhh, no. But they are creepy..." He said looking down at his book. "Just stay away from them, okay? They are not a good group to be around, and I'm telling you this as your student council president." Arthur said, with a worried yet angered tone. "But, who are they?" Callisthenes asked. "I'll tell you later, now, onto the club tour."
Callisthenes wanted to ask more, but he knew that he was just going to get no answers from as smooth with talking as Arthur, so he kept quiet as they walked to the large left hallway. The hallway had a big sign on the right wall that had said "SPORTS CLUBS" "As you can see by the sign, this is the sports club hallway." Arthur said as they continued through the hallway. "Every student must be part of one sports club. Each sports club is led by a teacher and a student. If they are not part of a sports club, they will be given a warning. Three warnings, and you're suspended." Arthur introduced Callisthenes to all of the sports clubs, not in person of course, but with a good, yet short summary of each of them. "Have you decided what sports club you are willing to be part of? You can just tell me which clubs you are interested in, and I can let the office know which club you picked. I won't let them know now, since we're not done with the tour just yet." Arthur explained. Callisthenes paused to think. (Well, the karate club is interesting, but, I already took that back in middle school... Maybe the dodgeball club would be cool.) He thought quickly, glancing at the other clubs. "Dodgeball Club." He said confidently. Arthur nodded and hummed, satisfied by his answer. "Now then, let's move on to the other clubs."
The two of them headed towards the large right hallway which had a bit more students than the sports club hallway. "These are the student led clubs, which are clubs led by students only," Arthur said, as he watched students nearby talk to one another. "You have to at least be part of one of these clubs, or it's the same punishment for not having a sports club." Callisthenes looked at the other clubs, intrigued by the cheerful designs on their doors and posters. "There's the ELA Club, the Gardening Club, the Drama Club, the Politics Club, and even more. But, that's just to name the main clubs, which rely on students and the school's funding." Arthur said, pointing at the club rooms that had students peeking in the windows and chatting about. "There are some other clubs that rely solely on students. Such as the Fossil Club, the Vegan Club, the Language Learning Club, and the Newspaper Club," Arthur explained, then stopping in front of one of the club rooms on the left wall. "Which is a club I'm part of... And the club we are at right now." Arthur gestured towards the window to the Newspaper Club, like he wanted Callisthenes to look inside. Callisthenes did as he had said through body language, and gazed through the classroom, looking at the large amount of papers and copiers. Not to mention a few students. One was about to come out as well. (Wait... She looks familiar,) Callisthenes thought, looking at the woman. (That's...!)
"ARTHUR!! WE NEED YOUR HELP!" Callisthenes shot up, looking at the woman who shouted so abruptly. It was the girl from first period, the one who had forced him to answer her questions. "Oh, Cindy! Yes, what do y- the club, need?" Arthur asked, quickly becoming more relaxed for some reason. "Welll, let's just say..." She moved closer to him, and started whispering something to him. Callisthenes felt like a third-wheeler within all of this, and put his hands to his hips, like his great aunt would when she was angry or impatient. "... I see. Well, Callisthenes, I'm afraid to say that I have to get back to the Newspaper Club now," Arthur said, straightening himself to look more professional. "There are two other clubs I haven't shown you yet, but please, whatever you do, don't go to the club on the left wall. That club is a cu-" "Yeah yeah, yada yada. The last clubs are just new clubs with weird people. Anyways, bye!" Cindy quickly dragged Arthur into the Newspaper Club, leaving Callisthenes to himself. He decided to go check out the club on the right wall, since he had a bad feeling about the left wall.
The club wasn't as flashy as the other clubs, but was interesting to him. On the banner on top of the entrance to the club room said "Literary Club". (The Literary Club... I can't help but feel tempted to go inside for some reason,) He thought as he got closer to the entrance. (Someone is definitely in there... I think I should investigate.) Callisthenes walked towards the entrance and opened the door...
