Aurora Lawrence laid on her bed reading The Hunger Games. It had been one of her favorite books for the past two years. It was always a series she loved to reread. She didn't know what about it made her so happy. Maybe it was the 'love triangle' or the relatable characters. She knew it wasn't the violence though, because she hated violence. She loathed the idea of fighting and would only use it for defense, even if she thought her dad would think she was a pussy. When she was a kid, her father, Johnny Lawrence, tried to teach her karate but she wasn't to fond of the idea of hurting other people.
Strands of her blonde curly hair framed her face as she finished another chapter. She placed her book mark into her book and sat up when she heard knocking at her door. "Come in." She said as her door opened revealing Miguel.
Aurora smiled at Miguel. She had grown accustomed to the boy inside of her home. Her father and him had become very close over the past year. He brought out a side of Johnny that Aurora had never seen before. As much as she was thankful for that, she envied their close bond. Wishing that she could be that close to her father.
"Hey, Rory" Miguel gave her a smile.
Aurora grinned at the nickname, "Hey, Miggy." She spoke softly before pushing some strands of her hair behind her ears.
"Sensei said that dinner will be ready in a few minutes, I'd thought I'd let you know." Aurora nodded her head at Miguel's words, "Thanks."
"Yeah." The Diaz said before leaving her room. Aurora let out a small sigh as she stood up, placing her book down beside her. She smelt the comforting scent of mexican food coming from the kitchen. The two Lawrence's would have dinner often over at the Diaz's house. Carmen and Rosa always convince them to try new foods and would always bring them leftovers.
Aurora took a breath as she looked around her room. It was always so quiet when she was at home, but right now she could hear that it was filled with love and life. She normally felt like she was on her own when she was home. Her dad was normally out with Miguel and which usually left her to be home alone. She didn't mind it as much as she used to, she had come accustomed to the silence. Sometimes she even found it comforting.
As Aurora went to leave her room her took one book glance back into her small space. She looked over at her twin sized bed that had sheets with flowers on them with white pillows on top. Her bed was right beside a small table and chair that she would use for her desk. A few comic books sat on her bookshelf followed by tons of books. Her closet door had a mirror on it that she loved to use when she tried on outfits. Most of the clothes in her closet were hand me downs from Mia Carson, but she didn't mind. She admired the woman's style.
Mia Carson was like the mother she never had. As a kid Auroras mother had left her with her father due to her not wanting to have another child, especially a girl. Even though she hated her mother for that, a part of her wished she could get to know her. But she pushed those thoughts out of her head as she left her room and walked towards the kitchen.
Aurora smiled as she went and sat next to Rosa, "Hola, Aurora."
"Hola, Rosa." She replied before her father came from behind her and brought more food to the table, "Dinner is served. All right, tonight's main course is fajitas and grilled vegetables. I have pick de gallo and corn and flour tortillas."
"Wow, this looks delicious, Johnny." Carmen spoke she looked at all the food on the table.
Aurora nodded her head, "Yeah, good job, dad."
Johnny smiled a bit before opening up a bottle of Coke, "Thanks. I got the recipe off the Chili's website. I wanted it to be authentic."
"Auténtico para quién? Somos ecuatorianos, no somos mexicanos." Rosa spoke. (Authentic for who? We're Ecuadorian, not Mexican.)
Carmen laughed, "Mama."
Aurora smiled before adding some of the fajita to her plate. She took a bite, her eyes widening a bit at how good it tasted. Normally her father wasn't the best cook. "This is really good dad."
"Thanks, Rory." Johnny replied.
"So how was the big first day?" Carmen then asked.
Johnny shrugged, "Eh, the first day, working progress."
Carmen nodded, "I'm happy you and Daniel are working together. I just wanna make sure Miggy's safe."
"I said that my back is in better shape than ever, okay? You don't have to worry." Miguel assured as Aurora glanced over at the boy, sending him a small smile.
Johnny shook his head, "She's your mom, she's always gonna worry." Johnny told Miguel, "But don't worry, I'm watching him."
"That's good... Aurora." Aurora's head shot up as her name escaped Carmen's lips, "Are you thinking about joining?"
Aurora shrugged her shoulders, "Probably not. I've never really been into karate, it's too much hurting people. I mean, Dad's taught me a few moves but I'm only gonna use them if it's absolutely necessary."
Carmen hummed in response, "Sounds like you'd fit in at Miyagi-Do." Johnny sent a playful glare towards Carmen causing her to laugh a little, which made Aurora smile.
"Miguel, dime, cómo te gusta estar haciendo karate con tu novida? Me imagino que les encanta de mano en mano." Rosa teased Miguel causing the group to smile ( Miguel, tell me, how do you like doing karate with your girlfriend? I imagined they loved it from hand to hand).
"I'm glad you and Sam are back together, she's cute." Carmen spoke softly.
"I mean, I'm not the only one getting back together with an ex, eh sensei?" Miguel questioned causing Auroras head to shoot up. She furrowed her brows as she thought, he could possibly be talking about my mom, right? Johnnys face quickly dropped at Miguel's words, "He had a date with the love of his life. The one that got away."
Aurora sunk into her seat at the tension. "Is that right?" Carmen questioned reading an eyebrow in Johnnys direction.
Johnny shook his head, "It wasn't a date."
"He's being modest." Miguel assured, "We took those cool pictures and made you look... not to say you didn't look cool already but he had to look special for the special lady. Tell 'em about the sushi." Aurora crossed her arms as she looked over at her father, clearly curious about his date until she saw the uneasy look on his face.
"We don't have to talk about it." Johnny told the group.
Miguel sighed, "I don't know why he's being shy right now. We went to the sushi spot because Ali likes sushi, or so we thought. So we got the dragon roll..." Miguel continued on but Aurora blocked out the rest of the conversation, wanting nothing more than to head over to Mia's.

After knocking on Mia Carson's door, Aurora stood patiently outside of her apartment. She stood with her arms by her side, tapping her foot against the ground. Mia opened the door with a smile as she saw the young Lawrence girl. She ushered Aurora in, "Come in, Rory."
Aurora smiled at her words as she walked into Mia's apartment. She always loved the cozy feel of her home. The apartment had a couch that had a few blankets draped over top of it with pillows on the towards the sides. Under the T.V there was a book shelf that was filled with books, vinyls, and decorative plants. On top of the shelf there was a record player that was currently playing songs off of emails i can't send. Towards the kitchen there was a dinning room table that had a vase filled of flowers with a few lit candles beside it.
Mia shut the door before following Aurora into her home. She tightened her ponytail before walking back into the kitchen, "How was dinner?"
Aurora shrugged her shoulders, "It was okay, I guess." She replied as she went and sat on Mia's couch, bringing one of the pillows into her lap and squeezing it, "My dad went on a date, I think."
Mia frowned at the girl's words as she took out two bowls from the cabinet and pulled out a tub of ice cream from the freezer. "Oh, I'm sorry honey." She told her as she used a spoon to scoop ice cream into each bowl.
"It's okay." Aurora sighed, "It's just, I never really thought about my dad dating anyone, you know? Like all my life he's been single and now he went on a date. It's just weird."
"Yeah, I get that. But you couldn't expect him to be single forever." Mia spoke as she went and turned off the record player before she bringing over the two bowls of ice cream to the couch. She handed one to Aurora causing the girl to smile. Mia then grabbed a blanket and put it over the two before taking a bite of her dessert.
Aurora nodded, "I mean, I guess. But I just wish he would have told me about it. I could have help him get ready and given him girl advice."
Mia chuckled at the girls words, "Really?"
"Yeah, I mean, I could try my best." Aurora replied, "But, it just makes me upset that he went to Miguel about it before he went to me."
Mia frowned at the girls words. She knew how much she envied the close relationship between Johnny and Miguel and how much she wish she was like that with her father. Aurora placed a comforting hand onto Auroras leg, "You know he loves you, Rory. He loves you so much but it's just hard for him to show it. Trust me, he wants to get closer to you, but it's just hard sometimes for parents."
"I guess." Aurora said, taking a bite of her ice cream. Mia sent her a small smile as she went to change the top ice, "So... what are you planning on wearing for your first day back?"
"Probably my white sweater and black leggings." Aurora told her before she began to speak about how she was ready to finish the last half of her eighth grade year.
