Chapter 09- Crimson Connection

Jungkook's pair of doe eyes stared at the night sky, twinkling with billions of shining stars. He sighed, looking up at them, wishing that the little girl Y/n gave birth to would look up at her mother from up there, along with her father, Kim Taehyung.

"I don't know you... but I hope you can hear me," Jungkook whispered to the cold air, fixing his gaze on the breathtaking view of the night sky.

The sun was replaced by the silver rays of the moon goddess, showering him with her milky illumination.

"Kim Taehyung..." Jungkook said, hoping that, wherever Taehyung was, he could hear him. True, Jungkook had never met Kim Taehyung, but that didn’t bother him. He didn’t feel like Taehyung was a stranger.

"Wherever you are, please look after her. Y/n... she has to survive." A cold puff of air was released as Jungkook breathed.

He prayed, from deep inside his heart, that she would be okay. She had to be okay. His thoughts were genuine for this mere stranger he had met only hours ago, yet he seemed bound to her. The chaos of the war had brought them together. It couldn’t be just a coincidence that Jungkook ran into her when she was at her most vulnerable.

The cold breeze wrapped around him, giving him chills. He heard the buzzing coming from inside the wooden barrack, which had been turned into a treatment bay for soldiers and other victims of the ruthless war. He leaned against the wooden wall, slowly slipping down.

A sky roared as three planes ascended. Jungkook's eyes drew toward them, recognizing that they were his troops. They were returning to Jeju Island. It seemed like Laso had delivered the message to them.

His mind was conflicted with thoughts.

He had stayed behind for Y/n, but he didn’t know what would come afterward. As soon as they sensed his absence, especially Dae-Sung, they would get to the bottom of it. And his hyung, Min Yoongi... what would he do? Wouldn't he also be dragged into this mess?

Jungkook hadn’t thought that far when he made the decision to stay.

It wasn’t as though it was too late for him to go back to the island, but he couldn’t just ignore what his heart told him. That girl was lying there, all alone, having lost her husband and her baby. He knew she was strong, but he needed to be sure before he went back. Something deep inside him prevented him from just leaving her like that.

He had done the right thing, he tried to convince himself.

He remembered Y/n’s weak voice.

"Don’t let go of my hand, Jungkook..."

His heart weighed with the thought. She needed help. She needed him. She trusted that he would be there for her. His lips pursed into a thin line, determined to ensure her safety and well-being.

Jungkook broke out of his daze and stepped inside the hall again. The night was getting colder with every second that passed. He wrapped his arms around himself to warm up, rubbing his palms together.

When he stepped in, he could sense the tension in the air.

He knew something was wrong when nurses and doctors were rushing around, mumbling to themselves. He walked toward the cot Y/n was in, to make sure she was alright. As he approached, he saw that Hyunjun had woken up from his sleep. He was now standing near Y/n's bed.

Making Jungkook even more worried, he caught a glimpse of the chief doctor discussing something with the medical staff, his gaze fixed on Y/n.

Noticing Jungkook's presence, Hyunjun turned to him, wearing a worried expression. Jungkook's big, doe-like eyes stared back at him, sensing that something bad had happened.

"You're here," Hyunjun said quietly. Jungkook felt the weight of his voice as he spoke. He shifted his gaze to Y/n, who was still unconscious.

Her face was getting paler by the moment. Her lips were cracked from dryness. When Jungkook touched her hand, he felt the warmth slowly fading away. Her body was turning cold.

"Jungkook, she's losing so much blood," Hyunjun said, turning to him.

Jungkook gulped, clenching his jaw.

"A blood transfusion can be done, right? I've seen them do it before," Jungkook asked, trying to remain optimistic.

"It can be done, but there's a problem," the other man sighed as he spoke.

"What do you mean?"

Hyunjun glanced at Jungkook.

"They've run out of Y/n's blood type for the transfusion," he said, his words stabbing Jungkook in the heart.

Jungkook bit his lip harshly, closing his eyes as he forced himself to stay calm. Running his fingers through his bangs in frustration, his mind clouded with questions he didn’t have answers to.

His eyes fell on Y/n.

*He wasn’t going to let her go through this alone. This time, he would be there for her,* he thought.

Jungkook walked toward the chief doctor, leaving Hyunjun behind. Hyunjun watched him worriedly yet curiously. Despite the gravity of the situation, he couldn’t help but be impressed by Jungkook's attitude. For a pilot known for ruling the skies, Jungkook was surprisingly down-to-earth.

Clearing his throat to gain the doctor’s attention, Jungkook spoke.

"What’s her condition, doctor?" he asked, motioning to where Y/n lay. The doctor sighed before explaining.

"She’s losing blood. If this continues, she might go into hypovolemic shock," he said.

Jungkook understood how critical her condition was, but he didn’t back down.

"Is there nothing you can do to save her?" he asked, internally hoping for a solution.

"There is... we can do a blood transfusion. But the problem is—"

"You’ve run out of her blood type," Jungkook finished quietly. The doctor nodded in agreement.

"Will she survive if she gets the blood she needs?" Jungkook asked, his eyes glistening with determination.

The doctor noticed the intensity in Jungkook's gaze, sensing he was up to something.

"Affirmative. There’s a very good chance she’ll recover if we get her the blood," the doctor replied.

"I’ll do it," Jungkook said, startling the doctor. His eyebrows shot up in surprise.

"What do you mean, ‘you’ll do it’?" the doctor asked.

"I’ll give her the blood she needs," Jungkook said without hesitation.

"If my blood is compatible with hers, I’ll donate. Am I right?" His voice was steady and firm, his resolve unshaken.

The doctor stared at him for a moment, conflicted. He placed a hand on Jungkook’s shoulder.

"She’ll need a lot of blood. If we take that much from one person, you could risk your life. Do you understand what I’m saying?"

"I’m strong. Healthy as a horse. I can handle it," Jungkook replied, unwavering.

Seeing that Jungkook wasn’t going to back down, the doctor had to consider it. It was Y/n’s only chance at survival.

"Are you sure about this? Are you sure you won’t regret it?" the doctor asked one last time.

Jungkook smiled faintly, trying to ease the doctor’s anxiety.

"I won’t regret it. I know what I’m doing," he said firmly.

"Alright then, come this way. We need to run a quick test first," the doctor said. Glancing at Jungkook, he asked, "What’s your name, son?"

"Jeon Jungkook," he replied with a small smile.

The nurse quickly drew blood from Jungkook and rushed it to be tested. While waiting, Jungkook sat on a wooden bench beside Hyunjun.

"You know, you’re kind of a man in a million," Hyunjun said, nudging him.

Jungkook chuckled. "Why do you say that?"

"You saved her from the cold bunker, and now you’re risking your life to save her again," Hyunjun said, looking at him with admiration.

Jungkook stared at the ground. "Still, I couldn’t save her baby," he murmured, his heart aching at the memory of the lifeless infant.

Hyunjun’s gaze softened. "Hey, don’t be so hard on yourself. You did your best. You’re the reason she’s still alive."

Before they could continue, the doctor returned.

"We’re lucky," he said, looking at Jungkook.

"Mr. Jeon, your blood type matches hers perfectly. You can donate," the doctor confirmed.

Jungkook stood up, relieved.

"I’m ready," he said, walking toward Y/n.

He gently held her cold hand in his warm one. "Hold on, Y/n. You’re going to fight this," he whispered.

"Don’t let the fire inside you die. You’ll make it, and I’ll help you," he added softly, gazing at her pale face.

"I promised I’d never let go, didn’t I?" he said, smiling faintly.

The doctor called him over. "Mr. Jeon, we’re ready for the procedure. Are you?"

Jungkook loosened his grip on Y/n’s hand and placed it back gently. He gave her one last glance before lying on the bed prepared for the transfusion.

As the nurse inserted the cannula, Jungkook felt the needle pierce his vein and the rhythmic pull of his pulse. Blood began flowing through the tube, into a glass bottle, and finally into Y/n.

The crimson thread connected them.

Jungkook’s gaze fell on her fragile figure.

"Don’t let go, Y/n. Hang in there," he whispered.
