5 - Mountain People
"If you want to survive out there, you really gotta try harder, Young Lady." Crassus walked into the Weapon Room I was throwing knives in.
"The knife is going well, but if you want to beat those Cranks, you'll have to be capable of more."
"I'll see," I grumbled. At that point, I didn't even care that much if I died because of the Cranks. Of course, I wanted to reunite with the boys, but they already thought I was dead, I felt awful, so enough reasons to just die when I couldn't find them, right?
"Try using a gun." Crassus handed me a black one.
I swallowed and got ready to shoot at one of the targets, but Crassus interrupted.
"You're holding it wrong." He commented before he took my hand and moved it somewhere. My chest tightened, a flashback of the pub coming back.
Come on, Jane. Don't act so lame. He's only helping. But I couldn't stop myself from feeling uncomfortable.
"Like that, yes." Crassus took a step back, not realizing how he made me feel at all. He was only helping me and trying his best!
I took a breath and shot. The bullet flew past the target, drilling a hole in the wall.
"I told you," I muttered as I gave the gun back to Crassus. "I'll just use the knives."
"Good luck then." Crassus sighed, not seeming to agree. "Throw some of them again."
I nodded and started throwing while Crassus watched every step I took, which again, made me nervous. He wasn't even staring at me, but at the knives, and yet it still felt like he was watching me like all those men.
What the hell is wrong with me? I took a breath and threw another knife.
"You're pretty good at it," Crassus admitted. Before I got the chance to thank him, he continued. "But try standing differently. Someone could easily push you on the ground like that."
I moved my feet the other way. Crassus sighed and walked over to me. My breathing hitched when he took my torso in his hands and moved it the right way.
Another flashback of Kane's face in front of me. I could feel his hands all over my body again.
"Are you doing this on purpose?" I lowered my voice. The shake in it was hearable.
"What?" Crassus' eyebrows furrowed. I had to admit it looked like he was honestly confused.
"Touching me," I explained. "Are you doing it on purpose?" I bit my lips and waited for him to respond.
He shook his head. "No. I would never do that on purpose, you understand me? I'm here to train you, nothing else."
I nodded quickly and opened my mouth, then closed it again. No sound came out.
"Go try out your camera, Young Lady." He suggested. "It'll distract you for a bit. See if you can find them and drop the note. Then get out of here without anyone else noticing."
Again, I nodded, this time in appreciation. "Thanks, Crassus."
He gave me a hesitant smile and opened the door.

A small laptop was in front of me. I could exactly see where the camera flew and what it was doing, so watched the screens attentively while my hands moved over the controller of the
camera.
I flew past lots of sand. A desert. The Scorch, how Crassus called it once. Soon I saw a big building in the middle of the Scorch. It looked quite modern and interesting, so I got closer, focusing on a big door.
The darkness made it hard, and when it started storming, I panicked a bit. Rain would maybe ruin my camera and the whole plan!
But when suddenly, the big door opened and seven people ran out of it, I looked closer. One of them didn't run very smoothly. In fact, he limped.
I let out a yelp, zooming in even closer to see if it was really Newt. And it was. He ran there, through the storm, the others and a boy I didn't recognize next to them.
As fast as possible, before the storm could do something, I flew toward Minho, who was the closest. His eyes widened when he heard the buzzing of my camera next to his ear. He ran fast but turned his head. Then he didn't take it. He didn't take the camera, yet he saw it.
My stomach dropped in disappointment, but I kept flying around the Gladers, following them as they climbed over a mountain. I wondered what they were doing and who they were running from, but didn't spend too much time on that thought.
Later, the camera survived everything and I let it follow Teresa into a building. I was too far away to catch the whole conversation, but once I got closer, I could hear Newt's amazing accent come from the speaker.
"Okay. So, what's the plan?" He put his hands on his hips and looked at Thomas. "You do have a plan, right?"
"Yeah. I don't know."
Casually Thomas.
Only hearing their voices made me happier, a warm feeling slowly forming deep in my stomach.. a small light forming in all the darkness.
"Well, we followed you out here, Thomas." Newt's voice cracked. "And now you're saying that you have no idea where we're going... or what we're doing?"
Thomas rubbed his chin. "Wait. Janson said something about people hiding in the mountains."
Janson?
"Some kind of resistance or army." Thomas continued. "The Right Arm. If they're really against WICKED, maybe they can help us."
It was what Crassus and Gally explained to me. The Right Arm. They knew about it too, so they were already heading to the mountains, which did mean I had to hurry.
"People." Newt started. "In the mountains. Mountain people. That's your plan?"
"It's the only chance we have." Thomas decided.
Minho muttered something when I flew the camera past him again. "I swear to god this stupid.. bug!" He tossed around with his arms.
Almost I chuckled. Almost.
He let out another yelp and tried to catch me while I kind of enjoyed teasing the boy until he hit the camera. The image on my laptop crashed for a slight second, black dots appearing, but then turned normal again.
"It's like a Beetle Blade," Frypan commented.
"I'm gonna shuckin' kill this piece of klunk!" Minho grumbled.
"It's just a bug, Minho." Newt sighed.
My eyes widened when Minho caught me, the screen turning black since the camera was pointed at the palm of his hand.
"There's a note," Minho announced. He opened it while my screen was still black.
"HOLY S-."
Then the camera turned off after Minho dropped it. Great timing like always. I sighed, the happiness I felt for a few seconds soon fading again, but I was also cheerful from seeing the boys.

"So you know for sure that they're going to the mountains?" Crassus wandered around my room, holding a brown drink in his hand.
"Yes. They said they would." I explained as I tried to stay calm.
"Did they get your note?" Gally rubbed his chin from the corner of my room.
I sniffed. "Uh, I think so. They said there was a note, but then the camera broke."
"You think so?" Crassus repeated.
"It took long enough already. I'm going out there today, or else I'll be too late." I decided sternly. "I can fight and throw knives."
"What a confidence you have there," Crassus muttered. "Just try to be a bit careful. We believe in you."
I pouted a bit. "Are you sure you don't want to come?"
They both shook their heads. "Lawrence won't let us and we have to fight WICKED in a few months."
"But Lawrence will notice that I left," I added, eyebrows and forehead scrunching.
"That's my responsibility." Crassus took a sip of his drink. "We'll come up with something."
I nodded, giving the two men a poor smile. "Thanks, guys."
Gally grabbed a backpack off my bed. "Here's everything you'll need." He handed me it.
Crassus cleared his throat. "Try to be careful with the food. You don't have much." He warned. "Some weapons are in there too."
"Thank you," I said again. Gladly I put the backpack on my back. "I'm ready."
"Good luck."
