12 - Reunion

"Cyra, come on!" Rye pulled his sister off the ground as I put my backpack on. "We gotta go!"

"Rye!" I yelled, twisting around to look for a place to hide. Then my eye caught lights in the mountains. Like a building. "I see lights!"

He looked up and stared at it for a few seconds. "To there!"

I nodded and together we started running. If I
wanted to, I could've sped up my pace and gotten to the lights faster, but I didn't want to leave the two behind. Yet in just two days, I grew quite close with them, especially Rye. Of course, he was just a friend, because I didn't feel anything else for him, but he meant much to me already.

"It's getting closer!" Cyra yelled as I started to panic worse.

"Just keep running," Rye ordered. We did as he told, keeping up a firm pace. I never went faster than Cyra and Rye, even though it would work in my favor.

Soon we arrived closer and I could see it indeed was a building. We ran past some old cars and garages while the lighting buzzed in my ears, the ground shaking.

Then my mouth fell open. A group of people were running toward the building too. One of them had a run I had seen so many times, I literally memorized how he did it.

"Minho!" I screamed and ran closer to the boy, who was looking at the lighting with a frightened expression on his face.

Minho turned his head, eyes widening. We made eye contact, everything going in slow motion for a second. His brown eyes were far away but as familiar as always. My gaze softened slowly, a relaxed feeling washing over me.

As I ran closer to him, he got ready to talk back but got interrupted. A lighting stroke hit him. We both fell onto the ground, a few feet away from each other.

My ears ringed and my body ached from the fall, but I had to get Minho first. He got hit, I didn't.. and I could see he was unconscious by his closed eyes and unmoving body.

"Minho!" Someone else screamed. Thomas.

He ran over to the Runner and grabbed his shoulders, some others helping him too before I even got the chance to get off the ground.

When I finally was able to do so, they already left. They ran into the building.

"Jane!" My arm got grabbed in a rush. I was too busy focusing on the Gladers to pull back or freeze in my place, which made the person able to pull me with them.

"Come on!" Cyra yelled. She was the one holding my arm and pulling me toward the mountains. "Here!"

She pushed me under a shelter, basically a big stone.
"Where's Rye?" I screamed.

"He ran toward the woods! Those are on the right of the building!" Cyra explained.

I nodded and got up, ready to find Rye, but Cyra pulled me back down. "Wait for the thunder to stop!"

As we waited, I bit my lip hard. I was worrying about the Gladers, Minho especially, and Rye. Cyra didn't show any emotions, but I was sure she was worried about her brother too.

"I think it's better now." Cyra lowered her voice after a good twenty minutes. But then we got interrupted by the sound of a.. helicopter?

"What the-." I stared at the flying thing above us. Its lights searched across the building, almost blinding me for a second.

"Jane, we gotta get out of here." Cyra realized. "To those woods."

I just nodded and quickly obeyed. Both of us walked fast and close to the ground in the hope the helicopter wouldn't see us.

"This way!" Cyra slipped through some plants, and me following her quickly. "Rye?" She whisper-screamed.

There was no response, which made my worry slightly worse. "Just keep looking. Come on." I never let go of Cyra's arm as we searched through the woods.

We didn't stopped looking and after about fifteen more minutes, the ground started to shake. Before I knew it, Cyra and I fell onto the ground as a loud explosion went off.

My mouth fell open in shock, wondering what the hell happened and most importantly, if any of the Gladers were close to the explosion.

"Come on!" Cyra grabbed my arm again, but this time I did freeze in my place. Automatically, my eyes opened wider, the horror of what happened in my dreams happening right in front of me again.

"Jane?" Her voice echoed in my ears as my chest tightened, making it harder for me to breathe. I saw the figure of my father.. that horrible man.

"Jane!" Cyra grabbed my shoulders and shook them roughly, causing me to get out of the trance.

I blinked a few times, taking in my surroundings before I slapped Cyra's hands away, who looked confused, but also in a hurry.

"We gotta go!"

Shocked I got off the ground and followed Cyra deeper into the dark woods. It smelled like fresh rain and my shoes got dirty from the watery ground.

But I stopped right in my tracks when I heard some sudden voices from a distance.

"I shuckin' told you she is alive!" Minho argued. "I saw her!"

A relieved sigh escaped my mouth when I heard the familiar voice. The lighting didn't kill him!

"I think the lighting hit you a little hard, hermano." An unfamiliar man spoke.

"I wasn't talking to you, old man!" Minho whisper-screamed. "And where the hell is Thomas?"

"This is your fault!" The voice, which I by now noticed had a bit of an accent, replied. "If you hadn't come in, Brenda wouldn't be gone now!"

"You were the one that let us go down that shuck zip line of yours! It's your fault Thomas is away."

Slowly Cyra and I moved closer to the voices but stopped a few feet away from them.

"I don't care about that Thomas of yours!" The man responded. "If you're so tough, go get Brenda."

"You do it!" Minho grunted. "Or will you break your spine if you do that, old man? Where's your cane, hm?"

"Want me to cut your fingers off?" The man threatened back. I raised my eyebrows in surprise.. it got pretty hard.

Minho scoffed. "You won't."

The sound of a knife being pulled out of a pocket made my breathing hitch.

"Woah, woah, woah!"

"He was kidding!" Newt spoke.

"I wasn't-."

"He was!" Frypan added. "Calm down, alright?"

Minho sighed again, raising his voice. "I told you that Jane is alive! She was there!"

Cyra leaned in. "Maybe you should save him before he loses his fingers."

"What?" I frowned. "No, I have to wait for a little more before they get a little less threa- Cyra!"

I let out a yelp as she pushed me forward, into the bushes.

"Who the shuck is there?"

I gave Cyra an offended glance before I nervously walked toward the Gladers and the strange man. The worst thing was, the shock of the flashback was still there, so I wondered if I even dared to hug any of them.

I stepped into a faint light, revealing my face to the few people in front of me. Their mouths dropped open.

"Jane?" Newt breathed, his face full of disbelief and confusion.

"Jane!" Minho called out. I didn't even get the chance to say anything before Minho's arms wrapped around me tightly.

My breathing stopped for a second at the sudden touch, my eyes widening, and my body freezing for a second again.

Don't panic. Don't panic. It's Minho. No one else. Just hug back. I forced myself to wrap my arms around the boy too, hugging him uncomfortably.

"You're okay." Minho realized in a whisper. "Wait, are you?"

"I'm fine." My voice cracked a bit. And then the emotions came. The realization of how much I missed the Gladers all those weeks, how badly I needed them to survive, and how I, deep inside, still felt safe in Minho's arms after everything that happened.

I sniffed quietly, trying to stop myself from sobbing and letting the tears drop, but failed and was soon crying in Minho's shoulder.

About half a minute after, we let go of each other and my eyes searched for Newt, who I quickly found close to Minho. I let myself fall into his arms, hugging him tightly as never before.

"Shh." He slowly rubbed my back. The voice was soothing as always, but the confused look on his face never left. "You're here again." He whispered.

I just nodded and kept crying, until another pair of arms wrapped around Newt and me.
A group hug was something I did not feel like doing. Too many people, all gathering around me, touching my body even though it wasn't in an inappropriate way.. it still got me panicking.

"Guys, calm down." Someone took my arm and pulled me out of the circle that had formed around us.

"Rye?" I gasped when I saw his face.

"My name, indeed." He gave me a pleasant smile before I went in for the hug. For this once I wanted it voluntarily from him.

Then someone coughed loudly.

"Woah, who is that?" Newt asked.

"What's his name?" Minho added.

"Where's he from?"

"How long have you known him?"

"Hugs shouldn't be more than three seconds long."

"Let go of her, pervert."

"She doesn't want to hug you."

"Do you even know him?"

"Let go of Jane!"

"You don't even know her!"

"Leave!"

"Hey, we asked you something!" Minho and Newt yelled in unison when no one responded. I let go of Rye and wiped the tears off my cheeks.

"Who the hell are you?" Minho crossed his arms, but only this time I didn't bother to focus on the biceps.

"Why are you touching Jane?" Newt added, giving Rye a stern look.

Rye chuckled and took a step toward the boys, who all stared at him. "I'm Rye." He held out his hand.

Minho and Newt looked at the hand like he offered them something disgusting, while Frypan jumped in action and shook Rye's hand. Soon the boy I didn't know and Teresa followed.

When Rye arrived in front of Minho, he held his hand out again. "Rye."

"I know. You just said that." Minho snapped. "How long have you known Jane? Why the hell are you here? Where did you come from?"

"You sound like a shuck Greenie," Frypan commented.

"Who are you?" Rye politely asked though I knew he also knew it was Minho. I had described him to Rye!

"None of your business." Minho gave him a cold stare. "You gonna answer my questions?"

"I've known Jane for two, maybe three days, I'm here because my sister and Jane are, and I came from my mother." Rye simply replied. Then he turned to Newt instead of Minho, who had the deepest frown on his face ever.

"Did you mouth to mouth Jane to bring her back or life?" Newt blurted out.

"I didn't." Rye laughed. "Is Cyra here?" He turned to me.

"Right here." The girl appeared next to me.

"Alright. This tea party was very fun! Sad we didn't have tea, though." Minho spoke up. "And now we're just gonna take Jane with us and leave this old Spanish man, creepy guy, and tiny girl alone and go search for Thomas."

Newt nodded in agreement and stood by my side, Minho following.

"Brenda is with Thomas too." The man, who appeared to be Spanish, said.

"Fine. You come with us too then." Minho sighed. "Bye!"

"Wait." I interrupted. "They're my friends." I pointed at the siblings. "They have to come with us too."

Minho gave Rye a nasty glance. "Oh, of course. I totally forgot! Come with us, man. We're like a family, very fun."

"Minho," Frypan warned.

Minho sighed again.
"We're looking for a safe place," Cyra tried.

"Nope." Minho shook his head.

"She's right. We can help you find your friends." Rye suggested.

"Nice try," Minho replied again.

"Ah, come on, Min." I turned to him. "They're nice."

He averted his eyes from the siblings and totally turned to me, inspecting my face deeply. I gave him a hopeful look.

"Alright." He finally agreed in a mutter, sighing after.
