1 - New Place

Jane's POV

A repeatable beep woke me up, but it could've been the aching in my body too. I felt something soft under me. Am I in heaven? I wondered.

Slowly my eyes opened, but I couldn't see anything special yet. After my eyes got used to a bright light, the beeping started to bother me.

With all the energy I had, I turned my neck. There was a heart monitor next to me. On the black screen was a red line with dozens of small numbers and letters under it.

Was it my heartbeat? Where was I and what happened?

"I see you're awake." A sudden voice made me flinch.

"No, I'm asleep," I responded, my voice hoarser than I expected it to be. The words sounded so familiar in my ears, but I couldn't remember from what.

"Jane, am I right?" The voice asked. My eyes twitched everywhere, but I couldn't find anyone and was too tired to sit up straight.

"How do you know my name?" I started whispering to make my voice sound less weak.

"A friend of yours told me." They replied. By now I realized it was a man because of the deep voice.

My friends. Friends, friends, friends... I tried to remember, but my mind was blank.

"You don't remember anything, do you?" He read my thoughts. "I guess I'll have to explain."

And so he did. Soon all the memories made their way make to me again, tears forming in my eyes. Chuck was dead and so were some others like Gally, I got shot, and Minho and Newt were with the others. The only positive thought I had was that they were safe, hopefully.

"Are you an angel?" I blurted out.

He laughed out loud. "You have some fantasies."

"Where am I?"

"In a safe place." He responded.

"And who are you?"

Guess I'm taking over Thomas' habits now.

"You're teacher, captain, professor.. whatever you want to call it." I heard a button get tapped and suddenly my bed started to move up.

"And your name?" I asked when I met the man's eyes. His dark blonde, a bit greasy hair was long, his eyebrows furrowed, and very short beard also blonde, mixed with some grey.

"Davian Crassus, but you should call me just Crassus." He decided as he walked over to a table. "So you have no idea where your other friends are?" He poured some brown liquid into a small glass and started drinking. It was alcohol, I realized.

"Other friends? Are any of them here?" My breathing hitched.

"Mhm." The man swallowed his drink and held up his finger before he spoke again. "Just one. Gally."

The beeping on the monitor went ten times faster than before, meaning my heart rate went up.
"Gally? He's not my friend. How is he alive? He died?"

"You died too," Crassus commented. "Until we saved you and brought you here."

Then I did break my promise to Chuck. My eyes got watery again, but I hid it from Crassus.

"Where are Newt and Minho?" I questioned, worry growing in me.

"I don't know a Newt or Minho, Young Lady," Crassus admitted. "But you better get ready."

"For?"

"Meeting our leader and getting a tour."

~

"What's his name?" I asked as I somehow managed to walk, quite slowly, though.

"Lawrence." Crassus sighed. "Just a warning. Don't stare. And he doesn't get a lot of visitors."

"That'll help," I muttered while Crassus opened a door for me.

I went in, the smell of roses immediately filling my nose. A dark figure stood a few feet away from me, plucking flowers and smelling them.

"Uh, hello." I nervously said.

The man took a deep breath of another rose before he let it drop. Then he turned to me.

"Aah, the spy." He chuckled and took some steps closer to me. A bit scared I watched his face get revealed in the daylight, and it looked horrible. Weird, bubbly skin was on his cheeks, two gaps were in the place of his nose, and his dark hair was very thin, showing off his baldness.

"Jane, am I right?" He asked just like Crassus had done.

"Yes." I quickly nodded, trying not to stare at Lawrence.

"Your friend Gally told me everything." Lawrence moved forward and just then I noticed a tube was connected to his body with a wire.

"Gally's not my friend." I snapped. "I hate him."

Lawrence sniffed. "They sure brought one with an attitude." He stepped so close we were face to face. "And do you know what we don't approve in here, Jane?" He lowered his voice. "Things like that."

Before I could even respond, Lawrence turned less threatening. "Tomorrow you'll start your first training day. Crassus will teach you everything you need to know. He'll show you around now."

I just nodded, ignoring the dark feeling that grew in me. I missed them all. Chuck, Minho, Newt, Thomas, Fry... I didn't even know how many and who got out of the maze! But I did know I had to find them.. somehow.

"Come on, Young Lady." Crassus appeared and motioned for me to come with him. "I'll show you around."

It reminded me a bit of when Alby showed me around in the Glade for the first time, which hurt me even worse.

"Right here we got a kitchen. It's not very big, but enough to feed us all." Crassus pointed at a steel door.

We walked through an open, square space. Doors were everywhere, men walked around and stared at us.

"Are there any women here? Or girls my age?" I nervously wondered when some people grinned at me.

"Nope." Crassus acted like it was the most normal thing. "We hesitated in taking you here in the first place, but once we realized your identity.. we brought you anyways."

I shivered, thinking about Dave. "And are those men nice?"

"Most of them," Crassus assured. "But don't worry. You'll be fine, Young Lady."

I hope.

"So right here we got the cafeteria. We've got two. One for the meals, the other one is more of a pub." We came past a weird-smelling room. "Don't take their drinks."

"Why not?" I frowned.

"They'll make you do stuff and act different with just one glass." Crassus sighed.

"And you don't stop them? Punish them or something?" I blurted out, offended already.

"These men are strong.. good fighters. I can't do anything against them. Lawrence can, but he just doesn't do it. He's too busy with his own problems and besides, you're the only one that could be a target, so it wouldn't really matter if-."

"Hold up." I stopped Crassus, anger forming in me. "Are you saying that just because I'm the only girl in here it wouldn't make a difference if something happened?"

"You've been the only girl for a month already." Crassus simply responded.

"Yes, with boys! These are men!" I argued.

"Let's just continue, all right?" Crassus suggested before he walked further.
"So we got some dorms, but you're lucky we got you a room for yourself."

I sighed in relief. "That's something."
Only the thought of having to sleep next to all those men scared me.

"We got training spaces, weapon rooms.. anything you want." Crassus easily explained. "Any questions? Because if you do.. just don't ask them."

"What kind of training do I get?" I ignored his comment and asked anyways.

"To learn you fight," Crassus told me. "We're planning on beating WICKED in a few months, so you better be able to fight a bit."

"And so I can fight off these men?" I added.

"I hope that won't be necessary, Young Lady." Crassus chuckled, but I didn't. I didn't like the place at all. It scared me, especially how some men winked, smiled, and smirked at me.

"Now get rest. Tomorrow you'll get the first training."
