70 - Broken Promises
My mouth fell open when we arrived in the room. Newt stood there, hands up in the air as a man pointed a gun at him.
The room was cold and completely grey. Nothing hang on the wall, it was just clear.
"There you are." The man grinned annoyingly once he saw me. He was bald except for a dark beard on his face, looking disgusting.
"What is this?" Minho spoke up.
"Now that's the part you didn't explain, did you?" The man raised his eyebrows at me.
"Put down the gun," I ordered, my voice as shaky as ever. I was still broken by Chuck's death and tears were in my eyes, but I had to save Newt before I could grieve more.
He ignored my order. "Oh, come on. Do I have to explain to them what you're actually here for?"
My breathing hitched as my heart pounded. "Don't." I took a step closer to Newt. He couldn't shoot Newt. I couldn't lose him too!
"There's one certain task she didn't finish." The man explained, never putting the gun down. "But soon we realized you were never going to, so they sent me to do it."
"Do what?" Minho stared at the man in disbelief.
He laughed out loud. "To kill Newt."
I let out a cry, averting my eyes from Newt and Minho in shame. I didn't dare to look at their probably hurt faces.
"Don't kill Newt." I took another step toward Newt. "He didn't do anything."
The man's face flushed redder in anger. "He ruined our trials! And now... it's finally time to complete the job."
"No!" I screamed, pushing Newt out of the way as the man pulled the trigger. Minho grabbed a knife out of his pocket and threw it toward the man, hitting him in the chest just like Gally.
The grin vanished from his face as he choked, slowly falling onto the ground. Tears were streaming down my face when Newt and I made eye contact.
"I'm sorry." I cried out. "I- I never wanted-"
"Jane," Newt warned, looking at my shirt.
My head snapped down, then I gasped. A red stain was soaking my shirt.
The man shot me.
And then I felt it. I felt the bullet get through me, and burn right under my chest. My legs gave up and Newt caught me right before I hit the ground. He gently lay me down in his arms, Minho sitting down next to us.
"We have to get help." Minho realized, his voice already breaking.
The metal smell of my blood filled my nose, making me shiver. "No." I shook my head, accepting the fact I would die. "It's okay."
"No, no... it's not okay." Tears formed in Newt's beautiful brown eyes.
"Just stay awake, Shebean," Minho ordered, his eyes getting watery too. It broke my heart once again. I never saw them cry before.
Minho pressed his hand on the bullet wound. A wound too deep to heal in time. A wound that was meant to hit Newt, but hit me instead. But I saved him... and that was the most important. They could live happily after.
"It's alright." I managed to say through my raspy breaths. The bullet didn't hurt that much, but it got harder for me to breath.. like the air got sucked out of my lungs.
"No, no.. you promised, Jane." Minho bit his lip, trying to stop the tears that were burning in his eyes.
"I know," I whispered. The taste of metal came to my mouth. I spit it out, the blood painting my lips after.
"You said we would get out of here together," Newt added. "You promised me too." One single tear dropped down his cheek.
"Just stay with us." Minho took a deep breath, his by now bloody hands never leaving my wound. I winced when he pressed harder, but knew he couldn't stop the pool of blood.
I could feel my heartbeat slow down. "I-I can't." I breathed as I managed to grab Chuck's wooden figure. "Thomas... give this to Thomas."
Newt took the figure out of my hands. "Just hold on, love."
I forced a small smile, a weak one as Newt moved a strand of hair out of my face, eyes sadder than ever.
"It's okay," I repeated, my eyelids getting heavy. I gasped for my last breaths of air. "I-" I tasted more blood in my mouth. "I love you..."
The last thing I heard was a few sobs before my body went limp and I exhaled, eyes fluttering shut as my heart stopped beating forever.
At least I kept my promise with Chuck.
