42 - The Boys ✭
Newt's POV
Bloody hell! I asked Jane if I could kiss her and she shucking agreed! Did that mean she liked me back? Or did she feel forced to do anything? Why did Chuck have to ruin it, for god's sake?
Damn, I was really over the top of her!
My face was bright red when I sat down for breakfast, nervous about Jane. She smiled at me, immediately causing me to feel relieved. Maybe she did like it after all.
"Is something going on?" Minho looked at us and cleared his throat.
"No," Jane replied.
Oh, shuck. What's that supposed to mean? Does it mean she didn't like it? Is she ashamed? But I wouldn't tell anyone either.. not yet. Just respect her boundaries, jeez Newt!
Minho nodded and stayed silent for the rest of the meal while I glanced up at Jane a few times. Her cheeks were red and she twisted her hair around her finger, probably thinking about something. I couldn't see if she was nervous or happy about it, but decided not to worry about it too much.
"Yo, Newt.. the fruit.." Chuck sat down. I gave him a nasty glance after he called me those nicknames. "Enjoyed your shower yesterday?"
Jane's head snapped up, eyes twinkling.
"Uhm, no.. not yet. Had to help Alby out." I frowned at their reactions, faces dropping.
"The water is warmer than usual, I noticed," Chuck commented. "I would recommend taking one today before they're cold again."
I nodded, slowly, trying not to be mean toward Chuck. "I'll keep that in mind."
"Good that."
After a few seconds, Minho raised his voice. "Should we go, Shebean?"
"Sure." Jane got up, gave me a nod, and walked off with Minho.

Minho's POV
"So where was this Griever of yours two days ago?" I asked as we ran through the maze.
"Why?" Jane asked through her breaths. Alby ordered us to run together for the day, so we could check up on the Griever. Jane said it was gone, but we still had to check it out.
"Alby said we had to check it out," I explained.
"Oh," Jane mumbled, but then talked normally again. "To the left."
I nodded and followed Jane her orders on which way to go. In the meanwhile, I noticed her breaths getting unsteadier but didn't mention it out loud. I didn't want to bother her.
"I think it was here." Jane stopped at a dead end after she took a few steps back.
I looked around. Ivy on the wall was brown and half of it burned off, the ground black, and a few melted pieces on the ground.
"You saw it, can we have lunch somewhere else now?" Jane impatiently asked.
I sighed and bent down on my knees, taking some of the black coal on my fingers. "Just a second. Gotta inspect."
After I wiped the coal off my fingers, I walked over to the melted metal on the ground. Everything was so confusing. A bomb went off? In the maze?
"I'm hungry, Minho. Are you done?" Jane leaned against the wall as she watched me.
"Patient, I'm just looking," I replied, hoping it didn't sound too mean. I never meant to snap like that, but her impatience made me nervous.
There was nothing left of the metal on the ground on the floor. Just a dried-up piece, shining in the sun.
Jane walked over to me and put a hand on my shoulder, trying to pull me up. "Minho, come on."
"In a bit," I mumbled, curious about the other things. I walked over to the ivy while Jane kept pulling my arm or shoulder lightly, which pissed me off a bit. The physical touch wasn't exactly what I was hoping for.
"I hear another Griever," Jane added.
"I don't hear a thing." I coldly said. Only the way Jane said it made me realize it was a lie. She sighed and waited for me as I pulled some of the weird-smelling ivy off the wall.
"There's nothing here." Jane bugged us to leave one more time, but then turned quiet. I was almost done, just checked out the floor to see if there were any other buttons Jane described. But when she took my arm again, I got enough.
"For god's sake, Jane! Just a second!" I shook her off me, though I immediately regretted what I said. I didn't want to hurt her on purpose, but the bomb or literally anything the Griever left behind could've been a clue.
"I want to leave, Minho." Jane lowered her soft voice and I could clearly hear the pain in it.
Before I even got the chance to turn around and talk to her, she walked around the corner. Right after she did, I rushed after her, feeling very guilty.
She sat there, knees up to her chest and face buried in them. Her shoulders shook lightly, tears wetting her pants.
"Hey, hey." I didn't really know what to do, so just sat down in front of Jane. "I'm sorry, Shebean. I'm sorry. We'll leave, okay?"
"It's not your fault." Jane sniffed and wiped her nose, looking at me with her watery eyes. "Sorry."
"For what?" I frowned deeply.
"Crying." She quietly replied. "I don't get why I cry about everything these days! It's lame."
I cleared my throat. "Maybe you're on your ladies day?"
Jane looked up, face full of confusion. "What? Do you even know what that is?"
"Of course I do. Gally has it every month." I joked. Jane laughed a bit. "Just kidding."
Both of us turned silent for a few seconds.
"We'll go check it out now." Jane decided.
I frowned deeper. I don't understand a thing about girls, god!
"We won't go back there." I decided. "Why would you want to go back after this, Shebean?"
"Maybe there is a clue, Alby ordered us to check it out, obviously you weren't done yet, and-."
"Hey." I put my hand on Jane's knee, causing her to tense up, but I didn't let go. "No matter if Alby said we have to check it out, we're not going to if it makes you upset, alright?" I paused as Jane's breaths got steadier. "Why did you want to leave?"
Jane sniffed again and took a deep breath, grabbing herself together. "I'm scared something will happen again." She whispered.
"Well, if you ain't scared.."
"Then you ain't human." Jane finished. I smiled and got up from the ground. Jane followed my example. "You ready?"
She nodded. "Ready."
