34 - The Spy
Still locked up in my own.. memories, I sat on a bed. Next to me were Newt and Minho, and on the floor sat Alby. I didn't know how old I was but by the looks of the others we were around twelve years old. None of us spoke, like something happened earlier.
Minho cleared his throat, which caused my younger self to give him a dirty glance for some reason. Minho glanced back just as mean, but then talked. "Isn't this nice?"
Definitely a Minho comment, I said in my head. "Shut up." My mouth spoke automatically. I got surprised by my snappiness.
"It wasn't my fault!" Minho held his hands in the air.
"Put those sweaty armpits of yours down!" I ordered.
"Here we go again," Alby mumbled under his breath. What again? I wondered, still in my thoughts.
"And it was your fault!"
"No, it wasn't!"
"Can y'all bloody tell us what's going on?" Newt questioned. His accent was the same, but his voice was younger. Less hot, also.
"He let us get caught!"
"That was you!"
"Caught by what?" Alby wondered out loud.
"By shucking." Minho grinned.
My younger self gasped. "Not by shucking! We were climbing through the vents and he made lots of noise! We weren't doing anything like shucking!"
"I can't control my gas!"
I burst out of laughing on the inside, but the twelve-year-old me was very pissed. "I lost my smell sense!"
"Drama queen." Minho rolled his eyes. "You gonna call me Minho the fart now? 'Cause you can't. There's already another boy. Zart the-."
I interrupted Minho by pushing him off the bed. "It was your fault I had to get those stupid syringes to calm me down again!"
"Woah!" Minho crawled onto his feet. "If you go act crazy like this, then I get they calmed you down!"
"Jane," Newt spoke. "Let's go to your room for a bit, alright?"
I resisted, but Newt forced me to go with him before I would kill Minho. "He's annoying."
"He likes you." Newt corrected. His cheeks turned red for some reason.
"I suppose friends like each other, yes. Though it doesn't always seem like he does!" I replied while Newt pushed me into a room.
"They're gonna hear you if you don't talk quietly. I don't want to be caught either." Newt whisper-yelled.
"But you don't fart."
"Who said that?"
I crossed my arms. "Now I disgust you too."
Newt chuckled. "What I meant to say with Minho likes you was.. he likes likes you."
"Likes likes likes likes likes..." I mumbled. "How many kinds of likes likes are there?"
Newt sighed. "You're in this mood again?"
"I don't care that Minho likes likes me." I sat down on a bed, which I suppose was mine.
"So you don't like Minho back?" Newt sat down next to me.
"Not in the likes likes way." I frowned. "A friend.. sometimes."
I could hear by the way I said it, that it was a lie, so I wondered if I was in love with Minho at that point, just like in the Glade. Newt didn't seem to notice my lie though. Another part of me wondered if my younger self was in love with Newt too, or that it was just one of them. Or none.
"And what about Alby?"
"Is this an interview? Police questions?" I scoffed. Damn, my younger self was sassy. "Why would I like Alby? He's not even hot."
"You only like hot guys?" Newt blurted out. "So you do like Minho?"
Instead of defending myself from thinking Minho was hot, I glanced at Newt. "Do you think Minho's hot, Newt? Because you basically just said that."
Newt's face turned redder than it already was. "Uhm.. I'm just saying that Minho looks better than some guys in here."
"Guys also have to be kind and caring, not just hot, so-." I interrupted myself. "Why am I discussing this with you? I should discuss this with a girl! Not.." I trailed off.
"A hot, kind, and caring guy like me?" Newt finished with a grin.
I rolled my eyes. "Very funny, Blondie. Very funny."
"Stop calling me that." Newt got up from his seat. "Or I'll go call you Janey like the kid in the cafeteria did."
"Say anything against Chuck and I'll kill you!"
"Wasn't his name Charles?"
"It's Chuck." I pushed Newt outside the door. "Now get away!"

A doctor asked me to come with him, so I did. We arrived in a sort of gathering room. Multiple people sat around a table and a big screen was in front of it, next to the screen stood a man.
"Welcome, Jane. We were just discussing your part in the trials." The man spoke annoyingly. I recognized him as the man with the turtle neck and leather jacket.
"Can we start, Janson?" A woman walked into a room. She was dressed in complete white and wore her blonde hair in a tight bun, just like the nurse from earlier.
Janson, I thought. That's his name.
Janson cleared his throat once the nurse sat down too. "This right here.." he pressed a button. A picture of a boy I recognized as Newt appeared on the screen. Newt didn't show any emotion in the picture, just stared me right in the eyes. "This is subject A5. Right now he's in the maze, sixteen years old."
Then I must be sixteen too in this memory, I thought.
"A few days ago, there have been some circumstances. I'll show you those in a minute." Janson paused. "About two months ago, he was sent into the maze along with twenty other subjects. His brain patterns started to fail, we even saw signs of depression."
My breathing hitched, not just mentally. Newt had depression? Or what was Janson talking about?
"This affected others too, especially A7." Jason pressed another. A stern-looking Minho appeared on the screen. "His patterns are different since that one day."
The nurse from earlier spoke. "Alright. Thank you, Janson." She turned to me, but never took her eyes off Janson. "Take her to the room. Let her watch."
A man grabbed my arm and pulled me out of my seat. Confused I walked with them. What were they doing?
The nurse followed. "Since her bond with A5 is very strong, I recommend using the ropes."
The man that held me nodded and kept walking at a firm pace. Ropes? What ropes? What were they going to do?
I got pushed into a chair, which stood in the middle of an almost empty, dark room. Only a large screen was in front of me. The man tied my feet onto the chair and my hands together, which left me defenseless. In shock I watched the man click on something on the screen, then he walked away.
There I sat, completely alone in a room, tied onto a chair. A buzzing noise came out of the screen, until something that looked much like the maze appeared on it. My eyebrows furrowed as I stared at someone who ran into the maze. That someone looked a lot like Newt.
Was he a Runner? Why did he go into the maze? If he wasn't a Runner, then he would not be allowed to go into the maze. He must've been a Runner. Newt wouldn't break rules that easily.
My mind was spinning with questions I needed answers to.
As Newt ran, my anxiety got worse by the second. Something must be going on. Otherwise, they wouldn't have shown me the screen with Newt on it.
By now my body felt normal again. I tried moving my fingers, and it worked. I could somehow control myself again.
My breathing hitched when Newt came to a stop after he ran for about an hour. No limp, I noticed. He looked up at a tall wall in front of him, ivy covering it completely. Newt mumbled something I couldn't understand before he grabbed the ivy in his hands and started.. climbing?
A strange feeling was in me. Something was going to happen, I knew it. And a few seconds later, it snapped. Newt, Janson thinking he had depression, Newt climbing the wall with tears falling down his cheeks..
My breathing just stopped when I realized what Newt was about to do. He was going to jump. "No.." I cried out, tears forming in my eyes. I tried to get out of the chair, but I was tied to it tightly. "Let me go!" I raised my voice. "Newt!"
I knew yelling wouldn't help. Newt couldn't hear me. I could only watch. "Stop! Please!"
Newt kept climbing as tears streamed down my face. He couldn't do this. I couldn't lose him. I loved him. "Newt, no!" All my pain turned into a loud scream again. "Please don't! Stop it!"
A waterfall of tears dripped down my chin, onto my shirt. "Newt!"
Newt gave one last glance into the camera once he got on top of the wall, then he let himself fall. "No!" I screamed louder than I ever remembered doing. I almost couldn't watch Newt. It hurt me too much. It broke me.
More tears dropped down my face at the thought of losing Newt in this way. He fell, but got close to the ivy. Eventually, his leg got stuck in it. I swore I heard a snap coming from it.
His limp, I realized. That's how he got it.
Feeling something empty inside of me, like it was eating my stomach, I got dragged out of the room again. I couldn't move. My whole body was just frozen in its place. My eyes kept producing tears. I just couldn't stop crying.
Later I sat in the same gathering room again, with the same people. Janson looked me in my, probably bloodshot, eyes.
"This happened a few days ago." He started.
Then I realized it was all a memory. It was still the worst, but I realized what Newt did was a long time ago. It did really happen, but it wasn't like I just disappeared out of the Glade and Newt did this in the meanwhile. Though I still didn't know where I was in the Glade. I was stuck in my memories.
"As I said, after subject A7 had to drag A5 out of the maze, both of their patterns got affected." Janson sighed. "Which brings me to Jane."
"Stop!" A more blurred voice yelled from a distance. "Stop her memories!"
"We can't control it! It's too much!"
"This will ruin it all! She won't be able to take it!"
The voices disappeared again, leaving me very confused, but soon my attention was drawn to Janson again.
"Subject A10. We got you a name too. The Spy."
I gasped quietly. Spy?
"Turn off the memories!" The blurred voice spoke.
"We can't!"
Janson started explaining everything. "In about two years you'll be sent into the maze. In the meantime, you'll get fighting and knife-throwing lessons, just in case." Janson paused dramatically. "You have to be prepared. Once you get in there, certain tasks will be sent to you. If you don't complete or succeed, there will be consequences.. punishments. Of course, everything I tell you now won't be remembered later, but I still will."
Shocked I stared at Janson.
"These tasks will prepare you and we'll hopefully gain your trust. If we fail on that part, we have other methods."
"Prepare me for what?" I asked.
"Turn them off right now!"
"I'm trying!"
"This is gonna be a shock for her!"
"Prepare you for the one task you'll be in the maze for." Another pause. "As the patterns are changing.. getting ruined by A5, we decided it would be better to knock him out of the trials. Obviously, it'll get suspicious and surprising if we just kill the boy off.."
Kill? Kill the boy off?
My breaths got heavier at the things Janson said. He scared me.
"So we'll send a spy. You'll help us do things so it will be easier for the patterns. And at the end.." Janson paused again.
"You will kill him. Kill A5."
My body went in a shock. With wide eyes, I thought about everything. I wasn't just sent into the maze like the others. I was a spy. A traitor. I was supposed to kill Newt. One I loved. I couldn't kill Newt. Not him.
My heart broke into pieces at the thought of killing Newt or him dying. I couldn't do it. No matter what those creators would do, I couldn't. Too weak, lame.. and too much in love with Newt.
"Turn everything off before it goes wrong!"
And then it all went black.

A/N: Well.. that went fast 🫢
