12 - Apology
A/N: I decided that the chapters will be longer than before!
~
Impatiently I waited outside the Gathering Hut, needing to know my job. I helped Chuck with the dishes, but it wasn't enough distraction to think about something else than being a Runner.
Finally, after what seemed like hours, a few boys walked out of the hut. They all gave me a nod as they got past me. Alby or Newt didn't appear. Just when all the other Keepers were gone and I wanted to walk into the Hut, I heard voices.
"This is ridiculous!" Someone who sounded like Newt said in frustration.
"Just give her a chance! Jeez!" Minho replied. Did I turn into a Runner? I immediately wondered.
"Minho is right, Newt." Alby's deeper voice spoke. "Just give her the training and see what she got. Otherwise, she'll be something else. Simple as it is."
My heart started beating faster. Did that mean I got to try out for a Runner?
"If she gets hurt, I blame you two until you die." Newt coldly said.
"No need to be so threatening, loverboy." Minho sighed. "Go get her."
When Newt walked out of the hut, I pretend that I didn't hear anything of their conversation. "We decided," Newt said, leading me into the Gathering Hut.
"Minho will give you the Runner training and see if you will be able to do it, if not, then you'll turn into something else."
"Yes!" I cheerfully said, hugging Newt who stood in front of me. I was so happy to turn into a Runner I didn't even realize what I was doing. Minho chuckled as Alby mumbled something.
My eyes opened wide when I realized I was clenching around Newt. I let out a cough and let go of the boy, who didn't move an inch. "Sorry." I quickly apologized, rubbing my neck.
"As Newt said, Minho will give you the training soon," Alby stated. Newt still stood in his place. "Good night." Alby hinted. "Newt!" He whisper-yelled. The leader grabbed Newt's arm and pulled him out of the Gathering Hut, leaving me and Minho all alone. Fantastic.
We stood there awkwardly. It would be lame to walk away, but I wasn't going to talk first either.
"So.." Minho started as he leaned against the wall. I looked at the ground, not daring to make eye contact. "I'm sorry about what I did, Jane."
Not Shebean? He must be serious. Do I forgive him?
"I'm not." I blurted out. We were silent again, probably busy in our own minds.
"So do you forgive me?" Minho carefully asked after a bit. He crossed his arms over each other and waited for me to respond.
Finally, I looked him in the eyes from a distance. "No. I don't forgive you." I decided. "But I'll just have to live with it."
I wasn't going to forgive Minho for his actions that easily.
An annoying smile grew on Minho's face.
"But get that smile off your face or I'll smack it right off." I threatened as I started walking out of the Hut. "And don't think we're friends yet!"
Something about the way Minho communicated, was strange. First, he acts stupid, then nice, then stupid, and it keeps repeating. He didn't seem like the bad guy in the Glade, but he sure was a lot different than Newt. Though I didn't trust either of them. Just Chuck. Of course, Newt was nice and caring to me, but that still didn't give me a reason to fully trust him in five days. Chuck was the only innocent kid I could trust.
I still didn't know why we were even locked up in the place. What was the reason? Did the world fall apart? Why am I the only girl? Do they want me to expand the Glade? 'Cause I was NOT doing that. Not with those dirty, sweaty boys.
"Jane, Jane, Jane!" Chuck screamed as he ran over to me hysterically. "What's your job? Tell me!"
"I don't have a job yet, but... I will get a training to be a Runner!" I said, very excited too.
"Really? Oh my gosh, Jane! You're gonna be a Runner!" Chuck jumped up and down cheerfully. I smiled at his reaction. "Now let's get dinner!"

"The patterns are failing." The same man explained. His hair was dark-grayish, he wore a grey turtle neck and a leather jacket. Just a normal person. "This may have consequences. We decided to send someone into the maze to sabotage. We can the subjects their reactions to multiple things, so our pattern will be a success."
"She will be sent soon."

It was just a flash of a memory, but enough to make me realize I was in the Glade for a reason. Though I still didn't exactly understand why.
"She's waking up!"
"Bloody hell, finally!"
"Slim it, you slintheads!"
Confused I opened my eyes, just to see about four pairs above me. Chuck, Newt, Alby, and Clint. My eyebrows furrowed as I shot straight up, causing the boys to back off.
"Calm down there," Clint warned.
"What happened?" I frowned confused. Did I faint again? What the hell was it? Why did I get those memories?
"The same thing!" Chuck yelled out. "We were talking, and you fainted. I think there is something about me that makes you faint."
"I don't think it's you, Chuck." Newt chuckled lightly at the boy.
"It's not you either." Chuck snapped back.
Newt ignored Chuck and turned to me again. "Are you okay?"
I put a hand on my sweaty forehead, which ached a bit, but that was it. "Yeah, I think so."
"What happened?" Clint asked. "Did you start to feel nauseous?"
"No. Suddenly everything just turned black." I replied. It was half of the truth.
"Anything else?"
"Nope." I said, popping the p. "Nothing." I lied. Eventually, Clint walked off to a patient, Newt gave me a nod and got away, Chuck and Alby did too.
Well, they left quickly.
I sighed and climbed out of the bed. I was in the Med Hut. A few other boys sat on chairs, waiting for their cuts and scratches to be treated.
Jesus, how fast do they get hurt in here?
I noticed Gally too. He looked me in the eyes coldly, his lips in one clenched line, eyebrows furrowed. A bit nervous I wanted to open the door, but Gally got up from his seat and grabbed my arm, squeezing it hard. In shock of the sudden action, I waited for Gally to talk.
His face was blank, though his eyes seemed dark. Gally moved closer to me, our faces just inches away from each other. "I don't trust you." The Builder said through his teeth, almost spitting on my face.
My stomach dropped and with wide eyes, I tried to hold eye contact with Gally. What does he know? What do I know? What did I do? Or what am I doing?
"I know you're doing something." Gally tightened the grip on my wrist. I almost winced in pain. Was he possessed or something? "And I will find out what it is." He threatened, squeezing my wrist so hard I had to bite my lip so I wouldn't cry.
"Let go of me," I said, my tone just as cold as Gally's. The boy gave me a last glance before walking off. In pain, I grabbed my wrist. It was red and hurt a bit, but I would be fine. Hopefully.
Finally, I could walk away to get dinner with the others. Chuck, Newt, and of course, Minho, already sat at their usual table. I sat down next to Chuck and rested my hurting wrist on the table, not realizing I showed off the bruises that already started to form.
Chuck tapped my shoulder with his finger. "What happened?" He innocently pointed at my wrist.
Oh, shit.
Quickly I hid my wrist under the table, but the other two boys already saw it. Newt looked at me worried. Minho's expression stayed blank, though he looked at me too.
I cleared my throat lightly. "Just an accident."
"What happened?" Newt asked just as Chuck did, just a bit sterner.
A part of me wanted to tell them about Gally. The other part told me that it would be best if I didn't. Maybe they got suspicious of me. I didn't know what they could get suspicious of, because I didn't even know it myself.
Lie.
The robot voice told me. My heart rate got up.
Lie. Tell them you hit your wrist on a wall.
"I hit it on a wall," I said with my voice almost cracking. Newt scrunched his eyebrows, but let go of it.
"You have to get it treated." Chuck sternly ordered.
"I'll see." I sighed and started eating. For most of the dinner, we were silent. Chuck and Minho bickered over something and sometimes Newt joined in, but that was it. After a while, I finished eating.
"I'm taking a shower," I announced as I got up from my seat. I didn't mean it as an invitation for the boys to keep watch, but they did take it like that.
"I'll keep watch." Newt and Minho said in unison.
I frowned a bit. Last time Minho told me Newt had to do it the next time, so why did he offer to do it now?
"I think I'll be perfectly fine on my own." I simply replied, not wanting the boys to argue.
"Chuck can keep watch, can't you, Chuckie?" Minho looked at the boy.
"Don't look at me! I got dishes to clean." The boy responded before stuffing his mouth full of food again.
"Keep on bickering. But I ain't gonna wait for you two to make a decision. See ya!" I sighed and walked off.
Newt and Minho were whispering some stuff to each other and soon I noticed that Newt followed me. I ignored him and walked into the showers, turned on the water that never got warm, and hopped in. This time without yelping, I let the cold water wet my whole body. It was quite refreshing, to be honest.
Not so long after I got in the shower, thoughts of the past days came back. The fight me and Minho had, what the stupid boy did to me, the strange memories, and the voice. Tears formed in my eyes. I tried to hold them back, but didn't last for long, and eventually dropped them. It was hard not to sob while thinking about the hellhole I was trapped in, but I did not want Newt to hear me.
After a few minutes, I wiped the tears away and turned off the shower. Quickly I dried my hair and body.
"Do you want to borrow my clothes?" Newt asked, still standing outside.
"No, thanks. I got Minho's."
"Okay." Newt lowered his voice like he was disappointed. I ignored it and put on one of the wide shorts Minho gave me and a sweater. They didn't fit, of course, but it was nice. With my hair still a bit wet, so it left a stain on Minho's sweater, I walked out of the showers.
Newt inspected my face, frowning as always. "Did you cry?"
My stomach dropped. How does he tell?
"Your eyes are red and puffy, and I can see the tear stains," Newt explained like he read my mind.
"Oh, yeah," I mumbled as I rubbed my eyes.
Newt walked closer to me and lifted my chin up. Butterflies formed in my stomach and they started flying around like crazy. Why did he have to do that?
"Why were you crying, love?" Newt questioned. I got even weaker when he called me love. Why does he have so much influence on me?
"Just the things that happened the past days." I shrugged and looked down. Newt removed his finger from my chin once I did. "Well, I'm going to sleep. Good night, Blondie."
