Annabelle sat with her feet dangling over the edge of the boat, dipping her toes in the water. The events of the night before were flashing through her mind. The talk with JJ, the beer, the water, him and his stupid lips, the look on Kiaras face.
After Kiara had caught them, they were forced out of the water, muttering poor excuses to Kiara who waved them off telling them that she didn't want to hear it before telling them to get back to business. Annabelle told JJ that she better get home and JJ had nodded and offered her a ride which she had declined. The two had awkwardly said goodbye before Annabelle left. And they still hadn't talked about it.
Kiara had been texting and calling all morning to ask about it but Annabelle hadn't answered. She wasn't even sure what to tell her. The whole thing was a mess in her head. It had all happened so fast and with both of them on the verge of drunkenness.
Annabelle suddenly spun around at the sound of JJ whistling.
He nodded toward the black expensive- looking boat that slowly approached them. "You guys see that? That's the Malibu 24- MXZ, the world's finest wakesetter. Number one is luxury, quality and performance. 200K, easy."
Annabelle stared at the black boat, her eyes shifting between two familiar faces. "I hate to break it to you guys, but that's Topper and his Kook princess."
The two kooks, stood with their arms draped around each other while glaring at the pouges. Sarah Cameron's eyes flickered between their not-so-expensive boat and back up at John B before they drove off.
"You don't have to act like you don't see us bitch." Kiara shouted after them.
The five friends continued their journey to the big hotel on figure eight where they were going to sneak inside and use the computers. Figure eight was the only place that had internet so far making it the only place they could go despite it being the enemies territory.
They parked the Twinkie in front of the luxurious building, next to the expensive cars.
"Alright, keep a look out. We're behind enemy lines." JJ picked up his gun and examined it to look for how many bullets he had.
"Oh, come on man, just put it back." John B said.
"What? You can never be too careful." JJ smiled.
Annabelle peeked out of the backseat, glaring holes into the side of his face. "And you can never be too dumb, can you?" She pushed the gun down, looking around to make sure no one saw it. "Put it down or I'll actually put you down with it."
JJ sighed before unwillingly shoving the weapon into the glove box.
"Thank you!" Annabelle exclaimed as she jumped out of the car.
The five friends emerged from the van, walking over the parking lot, filled with luxurious cars and fancy people giving them werid looks.
"So, where are we going now?" Pope asked.
"We're getting in the internet because only rich people have electricity right now." JJ said as he led them through a back door, into a large kitchen. "Andrew!" He shouted.
They walked through the kitchen, earning side eyes from everyone.
"Mama L, good to see you!" JJ said, attempting to grab something off the plate that an older woman was sitting next to. Using her wooden spoon she flicked his hand away.
"JJ!" Annabelle whispered at him through gritted teeth before turning to the older lady. "Sorry about him, he's a dumbass."
They left the kitchen, walking into a corridor where scattered kooks stood and talked, wearing clothes that probably costed more than Annabelle's house.
"See they got the backup generators going? Kooks don't miss a beat." JJ said as he led them through the crowded hallway to a more secluded one. They snuck through a door, leading them to a room filled with stationary computers.
"Sweet Lord, the internet!" Pope rushed over to them.
"Let me get in there. Gotta check out my insta models." JJ said making Annabelle shove an elbow in his side. He groaned and hunched forward.
"I got the map." John B said and Pope put the coordinates in on the computer. Slowly zooming in on an image of a familiar island.
"Boom, continental shelf right there." John B said.
"Well, if it's off the deep end, it's not gonna be much of a treasure hunt, is it?" Pope said and the friends impatiently waited for the image to zoom in further. Voices and footsteps outside made Annabelle's heart race in her chest, her fingers anxiously tapping the table.ย
"Shit, it's on the high side!" John B exclaimed once the image had zoomed in enough. "It's only 900 feet."
"Is that doable or something?" Kiara asked.
"Yeah, totally doable." JJ said.
"Okay, will we be taking your personal submarine?" Annabelle asked sarcastically as she turned to face him.
"How do you know this, Mr Dive Master?" John b asked JJ.
"The salvage yard. They got a drone that can drop 1000. Is has a 360 camera and everything." The blonde said. "It's exactly what we need."
"And can your Dad get his grimy little hands on that?" John b asked.
"Well, my Dads grimy little hands got his ass fired." JJ said and Annabelle felt a pang of sympathy in her chest. "I guess the salvage captain frowns on shoving up shitfaced drunk."
Annabelle couldn't help but hear the resemblance between his dad and hers.
"But the drone's there. It's in the impound yard out back." JJ said and pope stood up quickly, hearing his friends talk about stealing the drone.
"How much did you say was on the Royal Merchant again?" Kiara asked.
"400 million." JJ and John B answered in unison. The friends sent each other a nod, inaudibility agreeing that stealing this drone would be totally worth it if it meant that they would find all that money.
They stood up and headed for the door again, where Pope attempted to block their path. "Absolutely not." He said.
"Pope, move. 400 mill." Annabelle said, gently moving the boys hand aside. JJ grabbed his arm, pulling the boy away and allowing the five friends to hurry out the door.
"Can't we do anything legal for money?"
___
"Pope, we're not stealing the drone. We're borrowing it." Annabelle patted his shoulder. They sat inside the van again, this time heading for the salvage yard.
"Humans are the only animals that can't tell fantasy from reality." Pope quoted.
"Wait, did you come up with that?" John B asked.
"No, Albert Bernstein came up with it, but it applies to this whole treasure hunting thing." Pope said. "So, which is it? Fantasy or reality?"
"Why are you so weird, Pope?" JJ asked as he rolled up a joint.
"It's fantasy, but possible reality." Annabelle said, ignoring JJ's comment.
"Reality." John B said and Annabelle smiled at him though she was still not fully convinced.
"Virtual reality." JJ lifted his joint to his lips, flickering his lighter open but Pope was quick to steal the joint from him, tossing it away.
"Keep the signal clear." Pope told him just as they parked in front of the salvage yard.
Annabelle sent JJ a quick smile, watching his betrayed face after Pope had taken his joint. She jumped out of the van with her pocket knife in hand.
"Uhm... be careful or whatever." JJ called after her.
"When am I not?" She smirked walking away from the van. The plan was for Annabelle to distract the guard at the salvage yard while the rest of her friend tried to sneak into the impound yard. She walked to one of the many cars parked in front of the gate and pressed her knife through one of the tires making air spew out from it. She then pulled down her top further, revealing more of her chest and fixed her hair as she approached the gate.
"Hi!" She waved, quickly earning the security's attention. "Excuse me!"
"Can I help you?" He asked.
Annabelle smiled brightly. "Hi, Um, I actually have a flat tire. I was wondering if maybe you could help me out?"
The guard seemed to hesitate for a moment before he nodded. "Yeah." The guy grabbed a duffel bag and walked out the gate while Annabelle kept smiling from ear to ear.
She led the man to the car, leaning against it as she spoke. "It's this one right here. I mean, it must've been a slow leak or something."
"Probably been sitting in the yard too long?" The man said and Annabelle nodded.
"Probably." She smiled.
"It's okay. I've got you.. this." He nodded to the tire.
"Thank you, really." She grinned but the moment the guy looked away her smile disappeared and she looked around for any signs of her friends.
The man began to work on the tire while Annabelle smiled at him from time to time. After several moments of quiet, the sound of a dog barking was heard in the distance and the man stopped instantly and Annabelle's heart dropped.
"Do you hear that?" He asked.
"Hear what?" Annabelle attempted to act clueless.
"Tebows got something." He said, looking around.
"It's probably just a raccoon, maybe. You know?" She tried to sound convincing.
The man took one last glance around before exhaling. "Yeah." He nodded and shifted his attention back to the tire. Annabelle stared at it, noticing how he was almost done. So once the man looked away, she rounded the car and pulled her pocket knife out and pierced it through the tire. She cursed under her breath once she realized how loud it was when the air seeped out of the tire.
Suddenly a shadow loomed over her and she looked up to the security guy. "What are you doing?!" He asked.
Her heart raced in her chest as she tried to come up with an excuse. "This one looks a little low too."
"A little low... I just watched you do that!" He shouted before he turned on his heel and sprinted in the other direction.
"Shit." Annabelle cursed. She turned around to see Pope and Kiara by the van and she hurried up to them.
