the night and the sea were velvety and caressing, unfolding a core of softness. it allowed those that hid beneath the surface to rise, and feel the gentle breeze against their flesh.

nerissa always thought the night sky was a wilderness, a desert of lamps with no owners. she spent majority of her hours of darkness at the surface. could you blame her? for if she were to ascend during the hours of light, she would risk exposure to the human species. though, she couldn't help but grow curious. what is the human existence? for all she knew, it could have been simple. they may be dead stars, staring back into the sky, longing for what they used to be. the sole purpose could be to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.

unfortunately the basic knowledge about human existence is not that it is a tragedy, but that it is a bore. it is not so much a war as an endless standing in line.

despite knowing this, nerissa was infatuated with aliveness on dry land. she often found herself lingering at the surface just a moment longer, allowing herself to dance with the waves and move with the sea, up until her fingertips grazed the sand of the shores. nerissa would never allow the temptations to be uttered from her soft lips, but she couldn't help but wonder what her life would be like if she hadn't been born with magic in her bloodstream, her body bound together by the gods.

nerissa knew that if she had voiced her powerful notions, she would be terrible disciplined. but even in this moment, she found herself fluttering her tail towards the shore, yearning to feel the beaded sand underneath her webbed fingers.

when a shadow is cast along the trees, nerissa is found frozen, her autumn colored eyes surveying an unfamiliar silhouette upon the beach. a mere breath of air had been snatched from her. unsure. she stared intently at the large figure.

by now, the moon dripped beneath the horizon, allowing the blazing sun to take its place in the sky and granting her the wish to set her eyes on the features of the mysterious human.

a little closer.

nerissa bit her lip, inching forward. she tried her very best to get a glimpse. his skin was pale and scarred. and his hair was dark and smooth. she could feel her heart grow heavy at his dour, agonized frame.

he appeared tortured. why? nerissa could not answer. if only she were closer, and able to read his weighted thoughts through his gaze.

the water nymph found herself settling, unable to pry her eyes from the strange man on land. from freezing night, it turned to blazing day as the scorching sun climbed towards its zenith. he was now gone.

from then on, nerissa found herself approaching the surface, dreamy eyes in search for the soul on the shore. she would spend her peaceful moons with him. alone.

he never left her mind.

and yet, she never even crossed his.

she would watch him watch the sea, his tortured gaze prying into the waves. they rested in the dark, breathing together, the deepest intimacy.

all of the restless nights that have gone by have not been spent alone. and he never took notice of her.
