❛ SURVIVOR'S HEART !
chapter six ―― or something

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ "SO MERLE, THE JACKASS FROM ATLANTA, IS HIS BROTHER?" Josh asked, looking at the brunette but he had his finger pointed at Daryl who was getting his crossbow ready by the firepit.

"Yep." She nodded, her arms wrapped around her shins as they sat on the ground by the rv – they were under the pavilion.

"And Rick wants to go get Merle?"

"Rick's a good guy, it's what he does." She shrugged. "Always has been."

"He your brother or something?"

"Or something." She chuckled. "Shane's my brother and they've been best friends for as long as I can remember. Rick's been around my whole life, so he's like my brother."

"Could you just throw me a bone, here, man?" Charlie looked up to see Rick in his police uniform and Shane following behind him."Why would you risk your life for a douchebag like Merle Dixon?"

"Hey, choose your words more carefully." Daryl told him, taking up for his big brother.

"No, I did." Shane nodded. "Douchebag's what I meant." He told him before looking back at his best friend. "Merle Dixon – that man wouldn't give you a glass of water if you were dying of thirst."

"What he would or wouldn't do doesn't interest me." Rick stated, his good guy nature coming to play. "I can't let a man die of thirst – me. Thirst and exposure."

"See?" Charlie smiled at the boy that sat to her left.

"We left him like an animal caught in a trap. That's no way for anything to die, let alone a human being."

"So you and Daryl, that's your big plan?" Lori asked, sounding a little more than skeptical. Then Rick looked over at Glenn and the boy sighed, clearly upset he was being asked to go back into the city.

"Oh, come on."

"You know the way. You've been there before – in and out, no problem. You said so yourself." Rick told him. "It's not fair of me to ask – I know that – but I'd feel a lot better with you along." He then motioned towards his wife. "I know she would too." Then he looked over at Charlie, she was chewing on her lip and habit he had seen over the past several years and he knew she wanted to speak up. "I want Charlie, too."

"Me?" She questioned, her eyes wide.

"You didn't hesitate with that walker earlier and I've seen you shoot."

"Okay." She nodded, a smile pulling at her lips. She was excited to go, not that she particularly wanted to save Merle but she liked that Rick saw her as someone that could be useful and that's all she ever wanted to be.

"That's just great." Shane huffed. "Now you're gonna risk three men and my baby sister, huh?"

"Four." T-Dog corrected and Daryl huffed.

"My day just gets better and better, don't it?" He mumbled, cleaning his arrows and Charlie picked up a rock and threw it at him, it hit his shoulder and bounced off. "You little bitch!" He huffed, glaring at her.

"He's offering to save your dickwad of a brother, I'd be nice to him." She told him and all she got in response was a disgruntled hum.

"That's five." Dale stated.

"It's not just five. You're putting every single one of us at risk." Shane huffed, looking at Rick, hoping he could change his mind. "Just know that, Rick. Come on, you saw that walker. It was here. It was in camp. They're moving out of the cities. They come back, we're gonna need every able body we've got. We need 'em here. We need 'em to protect camp."

"It seems to me what you really need most here are more guns." Rick told him as Charlie pushed herself to her feet and made her way to her tent to get what few things she needed. She had her gun, but she figured her bigger knife would be a better option – and her pocket knife just wouldn't cut it.

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ "BE CAREFUL." Mason mumbled as he pulled Charlie into a hug and she wrapped her arms around his torso, squeezing him a little – he ducked his head down closer to her ear. "I need you alive."

"I'll come back." She told him as she pulled back, her lips pulled into a smirk. "You can't get rid of me that easy.

He shook his head, pulling her into his chest again. "I love you, weirdo." He kissed the top of her head before releasing her again and she turned as Glenn backed the truck up towards them, but her eyes stopped on Carl who was sitting with Lori – both were upset that Rick, who they had just gotten back, was leaving them again.

"Look out for the kid while I'm gone, will ya?" She asked him and he nodded as Daryl jumped into the back of the truck. She made her way over to the kid and his mom, squatting down in front of the boy. "You look after your mama, okay?" She raised her eyebrows at him and he nodded. "We'll be back soon."

"Be safe." He wrapped his arms around her shoulders and she patted his back.

"I will." She kissed his cheek, which he wiped off, before she stood up and walked over to Shane, who had kept his word and kept his mouth shut. "I'll be okay." She told him. "Rick ain't gonna let anything happen to me."

"Just–" He sighed, pulling her into a bear hug. "Come back in one piece, yeah?"

"I promise." She told him as she pulled back, extending her pinkie out towards him and he chuckled as he wrapped his larger pinkie around her smaller one. Then the horn honked and Daryl walked closer to the door on the back of the truck.

"Come on, let's go!" He shouted and Charlie pulled her pinkie from her brother as she turned towards the truck, Shane following her with a duffle bag.

"Hey, Rick, you got any rounds in the Python?" He asked, sitting the bag on the back of the truck as Charlie used his shoulder to keep her steady as she climbed into the back of the truck.

"No." Rick told him and the two talked for a bit before Shane handed him five bullets.

"Five men, five rounds. What are the odds, huh?" He mumbled.

"Not a man." Charlie muttered, getting a quiet chuckle from T-Dog.

"Let's just hope that five is your lucky number."

"Thank you." Rick nodded, walking away from him with the bullets in hand.

"And, uh, look out for Charlie."

"That goes without saying." Rick nodded before he rounded the truck and Shane walked away, then Daryl pulled the roll up door down as Glenn started the truck. Charlie settled in behind the driver's seat so she could look over at Rick, who was loading his revolver. When he finished, he looked over at the girl and she gave him a smile so he reached his arm back and she wrapped her hand around his before leaning her forehead against his knuckles – she really was happy that he was back.

The ride was mostly quiet, other than the few times that Rick looked back and asked if Charlie was okay – she could see that he was starting to regret his decision to bring her along, whether it was simply him being worried about her or something that Shane had told him she didn't know. But it made her want to prove to them – and to herself – that she could handle herself that much more.

"He better be okay." Daryl stated, his eyes on T-Dog. "It's my only word on the matter."

"I told you the geeks can't get at him." T told him from where he was leaning against the inside of the truck, all of them rocking back and forth a little as Glenn drove over the train tracks. "Only thing that's gonna get through the door is us."

"We'll get him back, quiet being a baby." Charlie huffed, her head back against the seat as she toyed with the knife in her hand. Then the truck came to a stop, the brakes squealing a little.

"We walk from here." Glenn looked back at the three and Charlie shoved herself to her feet and shoved her knife back in the sheath on her hip, following Daryl to the back door. He jumped out once it was open then he extended his hand out to her before she could jump down next to him. She gave him a weird look, but she placed her hand in his, using him to keep her balance as she jumped down.

"Thanks."

"Sure thing, Robin Hood." He muttered, walking around the truck.

"Why do you call me that?" She huffed, following him. "You're the one with the crossbow, I can barely shoot a regular bow."

"Who's being a baby now?"

"Don't be an asshole." She huffed, shoving his shoulder as they followed the others down the tracks – Glenn in front with Rick behind him, then Charlie and Daryl with T-Dog pulling up the rear. They stopped near a hole on the fence and Glenn pulled it open, letting Rick through then Charlie, Daryl, and T-Dog before he stepped through, pulling the chain-link closed behind him.

"Merle first or guns?" Rick asked, looking back at Glenn.

"Merle! We ain't even having the conversation."

"We are." Rick demanded before looking over at Glenn again. "You know the geography. It's your call."

"Merle's closest. The guns would mean doubling back." Glenn answered. "Merle first."

All five were quiet as they made their way through the department store, Charlie had her knife in her hand at her side and her pistol tucked into the waistband of her jeans – it wasn't the most comfortable but it was accessible. She took careful steps, following behind Rick until he stopped and pointed at a walker across the store. Daryl moved forward, his crossbow raised as he crossed the store so he was closer.

"Damn, you are one ugly skank." He muttered before shooting the walker in the head, it fell over with a thud and he made his way towards the body to retrieve his arrow.

"Teach me how to do that." Charlie mumbled. "That's all I'm asking." Daryl smirked, looking over his shoulder at the girl before they continued through the store and up the stairs. T-Dog moved towards the door and cut the padlock, letting the chain fall and Daryl was the first one out the door, calling for his brother.

He stopped upon seeing the handcuffs still attached to the piece of metal, they were covered in blood, a saw sat not too far away and all that remained of Merle Dixon was his severed hand. "No! No!" He shouted, pacing the roof, tears filling his eyes. Charlie turned her head to the side, her stomach turning at the sight of the hand. Her eyes settled on Daryl, she hadn't known him long, but she had never seen him cry before.
