𝐦𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫: one shot

"Everybody, strap yourselves into something." Echoes Mal's voice through the ship speakers.

The boat rattles and then tips, and I go tumbling towards the wall. With a grunt I pull myself up and then start making my way down the steps towards the kitchen.

I trip over the last step and fall to the ground. Jayne falls in front of me, then grabs me by the shoulders and pushes me over to a chair to strap me in. He quickly checks everyone else in their seats before tumbling over to the side.

"Jayne, strap in!" Shouts Kaylee.

With wobbly feet he stands and then sits on a chair with the straps locking over him. The boat keeps shaking left and right like an earthquake, then it starts to spin and everyone is pinned back against their seat.

After another shake it positions upright again, before suddenly impacting with something below. Everyone clutches onto their straps for dear life.

Eventually the impact comes to a still, with a long skid before hitting something else. I can hear everyone breathing heavily before I unclip my straps. Jayne does the same after me, followed by the rest in their seats.

Simon checks everyone to make sure they're alright. I keep my focus on the people around me, rather than the front of the boat. I know what happened there. Mal and Zoe march down the steps and tell us to grab some weapons, so we do and then get out of the boat.

"Reavers are coming in." Mal speaks.

Everyone follows him into the building we crashed into. He checks all the entrys and devises a plan with Zoe, who concludes that this is the best place to attack the reavers. Jayne marches over to the end wall and grabs a crate for cover.

"Wait, Wash!" Kaylee says, "Where's Wash?"

I look down at the ground whilst everyone look over at Zoe, but her head is low and she's filling her gun up with ammunition.

"He ain't coming." She finally speaks.

There's a pause shared by everyone. It becomes quiet, except for Zoe's gun clicking into place and all the reavers making their way from outside.

"Move the gorram crates!" Jayne shouts.

He and Mal carry one over to the back, but Kaylee stands shaking. The reavers haven't even entered yet and we're already one man short. It's impossible, but it happened. And I knew that it would.

River slowly steps behind me, leaning forward so that her head hovers over my shoulder.

"Unwind the hand. Change the time." She speaks.

No one else in the room hears her, they all run around to create a barricade with the crates. The room almost goes quiet as I stare at River. She nods slowly, but I can't help but remain silent.

"Leap frog." She whispers.

I gasp at the words. How can she know? Then again, of course she would know. She reads minds. I look over at everyone working and then back at River.

"I can't." I shake my head, "I can only leap forward."

She shakes her head at me and furrows her eyebrows, "Save him."

I turn back around but this time look at Al, my personal hologram. He glances down at his handheld device and then shrugs his shoulders. It's up to me.

"Okay." I whisper.

But River is no longer beside me. Jayne shouts at me to get behind a crate so I do, but keep my back to the wall so I can focus. I shut my eyes and try to block out the noise of the reavers, instead focusing on being back on the boat.

Quietly I can hear Kaylee ask me what I'm doing, but then I feel it. The tingle. It starts at my fingers and then works its way through the rest of my body. Now I can hear Jayne freaking out, but the light engulfs my body before he finishes his sentence.

My eyes open and I'm sitting on my seat already strapped in. The boat rattles and shakes and my head starts to spin.

"Jayne, strap in!" Kaylee shouts.

His feet wobbles as he makes his way over to his seat to strap in, and this time I'm ready. I hold onto my own straps and count the seconds, breathing deeply.

After the spin and the boat courses down towards the ground, I unclip my straps and tumble out of my seat.

"What are you doing?" Kaylee asks.

"Get back in your seat!" Jayne shouts.

I make my way to the stairs, clutching onto the rail to pull me up. The boat rattles as I make my way onto the walkway, throwing me to one side. I grunt as I hit the wall and then stand back up, making my way to the front of the ship.

The flying becomes more steady, so I break into a sprint to make my way there faster. Unfortunately, a panel on the wall breaks off and hits me on its way down.

I go tumbling towards the ground, hitting my head and almost blacking out. The panel lays on top of me, crushing me with its weight.

"Gwen, come on!" I hear Al shout, "Get up! You're almost there!"

I push my hands against the panel and manage to get it off of me just as the boat crashes on the ground, and then it skids to a stop.

Pulling myself up, I run over to the front and manage to find my way towards the door in the dark. But as I near I can hear Zoe screaming and already know I'm too late.

As I enter through the door all I can do is stand there defeated as Wash sits in his chair impaled by the reaver spear.

I close my eyes and they open not a moment later, after I feel the tingle, and I'm back at my seat. This time I make my way to the front faster, but am met with Mal shouting at me to get back to the kitchen.

When I persist, he unclips his straps and forces me out through the door. I try to fight back, even managing to punch him in the face, but again I'm too late. Wash is dead again.

Third time is the charm, I tell myself. This time I wait a little longer before running out of my seat. I dodge the panel on the ground and then rush through the door, knowing where to step now in the dark.

Mal shouts at me again when he notices me, but his sentence gets cut short as I unstrap Wash and pull him out of his seat, just missing the reaver spear that flies through.

The air is silent. No one speaks. I quickly remember the second spear and move Wash and I out of the way as it glides through the glass.

With a sigh, I pat Wash on the back. He just looks at me with wide eyes. Then I hear straps unclipping and Mal makes his way over to me.

"How in the dìyù did you know to do that?" He asks.

I smile, "Just had a gut feeling."
