01x03﹐someone's coming.
THE FOREST at night has never been a safe place. Even during the day, no one couldn't ask for the forest to be called a safe place.
Avery thought otherwise, or at least she had the illusion that nothing bad could happen in the woods.
Despite the strange and inexplicable animal attacks, the girl tried to think positively, due to the peaceful neighborhood where she and Nefeli lived.
Already an hour of running made her head think properly, and the blood was buzzing in all her veins, giving her the strength to run.
The cold wind brushed against her blouse-covered shoulders, making her momentarily stunned.
She put her hands on her knees and, leaning forward, took deep breaths of air. The last nights were hard for the brunette to live. Sleep did not come easily to her, and the mere feeling of someone's presence gave her extra goosebumps.
And so it was at that moment, when Avery heard a wolf howl in the distance, she immediately felt the hairs on her arms stand on end. She turned sharply, looking in every direction.
They're just wolves, Avery. Breathe calmly, she told herself in her head, trying to even out her breathing.
The howling became louder, her breathing quickened despite her attempts to control it. The girl had a feeling that something was moving in the trees behind her. She turned around, certain that on her way she would meet a serial killer.
Because only such people hid in the forests.
The clang of a broken branch caused the girl's heart to beat with much more force against her ribs, causing pain. She thought her heart wanted to jump out of her chest.
Avery began to run through the trees, looking for some place where the hidden killer wouldn't find her. She kept turning around to make sure no one was following her.
She was scared.
Adrenaline began to work in her, causing stimulation and acceleration of her arduous run.
The trees seemed to be getting closer to her, which only added to the fear she felt. She didn't turn back anymore, she just kept running to turn off the blind road and find herself in front of the big mansion that had once belonged to her dead family.
She froze, seeing the burned house. All the memories came flooding back, leaving Avery unable to move or utter a single word.
Her eyes wandered around the blackened walls, the leaky roof that collapsed years ago and the backyard where she used to run and play hide and seek with her siblings.
The red door caught her attention, causing her body to take steps on its own. She took safe steps toward the mansion that belonged to no one, controlling her breathing.
She put her foot on the step and took two steps up. Her fingertips touched the red door that had once been brown. She was surprised, because who could the residence affected by the tragedy belong to?
"Avery" she heard whispers and turned sharply towards the calm voice that was spreading in the depths of the forest.
She didn't see anyone, but she was sure someone was watching her. She could feel goosebumps forming on her arms.
She suspected she was hallucinating from being so close to her old home, filled with memories. Every night, painful cries haunted her sleep.
It took some time before Avery finally left the former residence. Still, she kept looking back until the burned Hale mansion was out of sight.
She slowly trotted towards the exit of the forest to return to her current apartment.
Nefeli must have worried when an hour or so had passed, and her friend hadn't returned from her usual walk.
The feeling of someone's presence did not leave her, on the contrary, it intensified as soon as she was back among the trees.
"It's just your imagination, calm down. It's not a serial killer-" the words caught in her throat as a tennis ball rolled in front of her legs.
There was a slimy liquid on the green cardboard, and its scent immediately entered Avery's nostrils, reassuring her that the unknown liquid was blood.
Victim's blood.
"Okay- I guess that was a sign that my consciousness wasn't playing with me." She reassured herself, jumping up into a quick run again.
She jumped over holes, avoiding dry branches that would break under the pressure of her feet. In simple words, she avoided giving herself a heart attack.
She heard the footsteps following close behind her, and felt a stronger presence. Tears began to form in her eyes.
Avery was scared, which gave her opponent an advantage.
The image in front of her eyes began to blur as the cool wind dispersed the tears in her eyes. She saw nothing but darkness.
She ran blindly, pushing against the bark of the trees. The air was beginning to irritate her lungs, and she was losing the strength to run.
She was sure that a strange figure flashed before her eyes. The girl ran into a swarm of dry branches. She tripped over one of them and, hitting her knees on the ground, she fell.
She tried to catch her breath, still staring at the ground. Her knees and hands began to ache from the fall, she moaned softly and looked up.
She froze.
All she felt was pain and fear. The air became thicker, burning her lungs. Avery's eyes widened in fear, her mouth opening wide, wanting to scream.
But she couldn't.
All she saw was a rabid wolf baring its teeth, right in front of her. His fur bristled as he stood in front of her on four paws, growling like prey.
He looked at her with his big red eyes full of vengeance and fury.
Alpha.
She stared into the red eyes as if hypnotized, as saliva leaked from the wolf's mouth. She didn't dare take another step, didn't dare take a breath.
She just knelt before him in fear and watched his red eyes disappear into the dark forest.
And then she couldn't remember anything, not even the moment she got home. The only thing she remembered were red eyes that visited her in a dream.
In a nightmare.
Walking hand in hand past the green scooter, Avery once again contradicted Nefeli and her questions.
"You really don't remember anything from last night?" she asked safely, adjusting the bag over her shoulder. Avery shook her head again. "You left the house around 7pm to go for a run. You came back around 3am, Avery."
The girl stopped in place, turning her body to her friend. She couldn't remember when she got home or when she left.
All she remembered was the red eyes that had visited her in her sleep that night.
"Red eyes." She choked out after a moment's thought. Nefeli didn't understand the message, just frowned.
"What?"
"Red eyes, I remember that." She explained, hiding her hands in pockets, and said more words that drew the attention of the boy sitting on the motorcycle. "Wolf with red eyes."
"You think it's him? After all, you know... Alpha," she whispered, not knowing that someone else heard those words as well.
Avery didn't answer. She shook her head, a tired sigh leaving her lips. She glanced out of the corner of her eye at the owner of the green scooter, who was interested in them.
Scott McCall. Avery nodded to him, then took Nefeli's arm and the two headed for the main hall.
A soft chuckle escaped Allison's lips as Nefeli and Avery were close to them.
"I don't want a boyfriend," Lydia said, looking around. Avery rolled her eyes, hearing the same chant for months. "I want a distraction." She added after a moment, leaning against the school lockers.
"Same again, Lydia Martin pleads for no distractions." Nefeli exaggerated, making Allison chuckle again.
The girls greeted them, then looked around in the same direction as the redhead.
Avery lifted her chin proudly as she saw the helmets both boys were holding. Nefeli just shrugged, seeing nothing special.
"Brothers?" Allison asked, not taking her eyes off them. Avery shook her head, still looking in the same direction.
"Twins." Avery and Lydia answered simultaneously, which made Nefeli want to throw up even more.
The girl really did not like the male sex.
"Oh, horror, even worse..." Nefeli moaned softly, approaching her locker, pouring the contents of her purse there.
The other girls just laughed, making all eyes on them.
Forcing herself to look away from the mysterious twins, Avery followed Nefeli's lead. Leaving the book needed for literature in her hands, she walked down the corridor to the appropriate room.
Sitting down at the desk, she looked pointedly at Nefeli, who planned to sit as far away from the rest of the class as possible. This girl was really trying to be antisocial, but with Avery, it just didn't work out.
Avery smiled victoriously. She watched Allison take the seat across from Scott. Argent must have been terribly awkward, after all, they had broken up.
A notification sound rang out throughout the class, not just from Avery's or Nefeli's phone, but from the other students as well. Looking at the message out of the corner of her eye, she froze in place for a moment.
"The offing was barred by a black bank of clouds, and the tranquil waterway, leading to the uttermost ends of the earth, flowed somber under an overcast sky," all eyes turned to Mrs. Blake. "Seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness." When the professor finished her recitation, Hale and Dunbar exchanged glances.
They were both sick of memories of the dark.
"This is the last line of the first book we are going to read," she explained calmly. The girls didn't like that tone, it was too calm. "It is also the last text you will receive in this class. Phones off, everyone."
"Oh crap, wonderful" Nefeli grunted under her breath. Avery snorted briefly, slapping her friend on the back.
At the teacher's command, everyone turned off their phones.
Silence reigned in the classroom as the teacher turned to the blackboard. By arranging the schedule in her head, she gave the students extra time to talk.
Nefeli automatically turned to Avery. The girls started talking about last night, making plans to bring back memories of the strange night.
"You should take notes." Nefeli opened her mouth, hearing her friend's arrogant tone.
Nevertheless, Nefeli did not turn to the books, she remained in her position. Working out the plan, the two did not hear the sound of the door opening, only when they heard Mrs. Blake's voice did they look in the direction of the person to whom the words were directed.
"Mr. McCall?" Scott lifted his head and the girls watched his movements. Professor Blake silently asked him to come with her. The boy started to pack, then got up from his seat and headed towards the exit.
"We'll talk about it later, keep writing." Avery whispered, brushing off her friend.
Indignation quickly appeared on her face, and despite everything, she quickly turned to face the notebook.
The silence didn't last long, as a bloody trail appeared on the glass, drawing the attention of the students gathered in the middle of the class.
The chirping of birds could be heard in the distance. And the black animals on him made goosebumps appear on every student's body.
Black birds flew straight at the window, collided with it, creating cracks and leaving only bloody traces.
Several windows shattered just above the girls, forcing them to jump back. They hid under their own hands, from the birds flying inside.
Stiles grabbed both of his arms and pulled them down, protecting them as well as Lydia with his body.
The teacher just yelled, "Get down, Get down!"
Blood oozed from the wounds created on each student's body. Ravens tore at their faces, arms, and the very head.
Avery knew what was coming as soon as the black crow dropped dead in front of her. Black liquid flowed from his pointed mouth, and only from him.
And then the screeching stopped. The birds fell dead to the floor. And the students came out of their seats.
Avery looked around, losing the black blur in front of her eyes.
Nefeli quickly found herself next to her, looking meaningfully at her terrified friend. "Red eyes, dead ravens."
"Something's coming," she reveals softly, making both girls' hearts beat faster. "And that's not a good thing." Nefeli finished for her.
Something was coming, or rather someone.
a/n: that's the start of everything...
