BROOKE ELLIOT was a hopeless romantic, she knew that from the day she laid eyes on her parents, their love was unbreakable and she only dreamed of having a love of her own just like theirs.

Mary and Phillip adored one another endlessly, everybody in Mystic Falls knew of it, most specifically Brooke. She'd always catch them dancing in the kitchen at night listening to Bon Jovi, laughing and singing together with the widest grins she'd ever seen.

Of course, like every other couple, they argued from time to time, but it never lasted very long. Her parents were the definition of the word love, Brooke swore of it.

But things change.

Mary died when Brooke was nine and her brother, Nate was thirteen, sending Phillip into a downward spiral including overuses of alcohol and cigarettes, doing absolutely anything under the sun just to take away one percent of the pain caused by his one true love's death.

Eventually, Phillip managed to become so numb, forgetting his children and everything else in existence. Brooke and Nate sat back, hiding in cupboards and under their beds for not even three years before Phillip packed up and left, leaving nothing for his children, no information as to where he was heading to or even as little as his phone number.

He left all responsibilities to sixteen year-old Nate, putting two massive weights onto his shoulders without a care in the world. Time moved though, and soon enough Nate was twenty-one and Brooke was seventeen, both siblings feeling more broken than a smashed ceramic.

Without any sense of self-respect, Brooke found herself falling head over heels for one of the new guys in Mystic Falls, dark-haired, piercing eyes and unusually mysterious; Damon Salvatore. Even though she knew she shouldn't be falling for him, she took a thoughtless risk, just like her father had.

Ignoring the part of her mind telling her to run away as fast as she could, she lets herself bury her internal pain and suffering with his manipulative attention and despite knowing he'll never feel anything close to love towards her, she fell in love with the attention he'd give her.

If only she were the object of his true affection and not just a substitute while he waits for his one true love, Katherine.
