🪐Lucy's POV🪐
After jumping back through the portal, we all stopped for a second to catch our breath. "Silver, you gave up the-" I started. "Just a lifelong obsession, lass. I'll get over it," he answered. I raised my brow at him a little skeptically.
He was trying to brush off what he'd just done as not being a huge deal, but I knew otherwise. "Aloha, Jimmy and Lulu," B.E.N. called as the R.L.S. Legacy pulled up beside us. "Hurry people. We got exactly two minutes and thirty-four seconds till planet's destruction!"
Mr. Delbert was driving the ship, since Captain Amelia's injuries didn't permit her to move her arms very much. She sat behind him, giving him directions. I guess they had somehow managed to escape their pirate guard during all the chaos.
As Mr. Delbert directed the ship closer to us, he accidently banged it against the ground. I heard one of the pirates from inside the brig scream,
"We were better off on exploding planet!"
Jim climbed onto the ship first and then reached over the side to hoist me up. We worked together to pull Silver up. As soon as Silver was on the ship, Mr. Delbert began to fly us away from the hazardous planet. "Cap'n!" cried Silver. "Yeh dropped from teh heaven's in teh nick o'-"
"Save your claptrap for the judge, Silver!" the Captain interrupted him.
Silver chuckled nervously, knowing he was in big trouble once we got out of there. We were making good pace away from the planet when a flying chunk of metal crashed into the mast above.
It broke and fell down on deck, bringing part of the solar sail with it and breaking a lot of metal and machinery. The ship started to slow down and lose altitude. "What's happening?" I asked.
"Mizzen sail demobilized, Captain!"
B.E.N. informed us, looking at a database of the ship's current condition. "Thrusters at only thirty percent of capacity!"
"Thirty percent!" Mr. Delbert gasped, turning to face Ms. Amelia who looked at him worriedly. "That means... we'll never clear the planet's explosion in time." I sucked in my breath as the state of our situation sunk in.
I turned to look at Jim, but found he had run to the observation deck and was looking back towards the portal. He turned back to look at one of the thrusters now lying uselessly on deck. I could see the wheels turning in his head as he came up with a plan.
"We've got to turn around!" he said, leaping down the stairs. "What?" Ms. Amelia asked, not believing what she was hearing. "There's a portal back there!" Jim called, rushing toward the broken machinery on deck. "It can get us out of here!"
"Pardon me, Jim, but didn't that portal open onto a raging inferno?" Mr. Delbert shouted hysterically. "Yes," Jim grunted, ripping a piece of damaged metal from the side of the ship. "But I'm going to change that. I'm going to open a different door."
"Captain, really, I-I just don't see how this is -" "Listen to the boy!" Silver interrupted the Doctor. "One minute twenty nine seconds 'til planet's destruction!" B.E.N. hollered. I looked over the side of the ship and back at the portal.
Everything was falling apart and fire was shooting out of the ground haphazardly. I looked back towards Jim who was trying to connect the thruster to the piece of metal with a
rope. "What do yeh need, Jim?" Silver asked him.
"Just some way to attach this," he answered. "All right. Stand back. Stand back now!" Silver turned his hand into a blowtorch and welded the makeshift board and thruster together. He and Jim carefully lifted it so that it was balancing on the ship's railing.
I heard Jim tell Silver this: "Now, no matter what happens, keep the ship heading straight for the portal and keep Lucy safe." He looked over to me, and gave me a small smile. A goodbye smile.
"Jim, no. No. Please-" "I'll be back before you know it," was all he said before he and his hand-made solar surfer flew off the side of the ship and into the sky. I dashed to the edge, but it was too late.
Jim was gone risking his life yet again to save us all. Silver had just managed to catch me before I fell off the ship myself. "It'll be alright, lassie. Well," he called to Doppler, patting my back in the process in a fatherly manner,
"you heard him! Get this blasted heap turned 'round!"
Silver set me down on the bench again trying to say that things will be alright. Ms. Amelia told Doppler what to do, and I felt the ship take a sharp
'U' turn.
"25 seconds!"
I had to look to see where Jim was, and I just got sight of him falling into a fiery crevice, his engine had stopped. "No!" I cried. "Seventeen seconds!" Heartstopping seconds passed as we neared the portal, and I was biting my tongue to keep me from screaming in fear.
"Seven
Six
Five
Four
Three
Two-"
In the nick of time, I saw Jim reach for the glowing green sphere and pressed the moon shaped button. I shrieked in victory as we sailed into a starry night sky and the explosion was now behind us.
I was unable to hold my joy in any longer and leap out of Silver's bear hug and went to the edge, seeing Jim-my big brother- hollering on his solar surf. As he leapt onto the deck and discarded his version of a surfboard, Morph immediately started licking his face off.
I was so happy I had covered my face with my hands and let my tears that were held inside of me for years fall. Jim was okay! I survived! I was too happy to notice that Jim had walked up to me and stood there with a worried expression on him.
"Look, Luc. I know I scared you to death, and I'm sorry-" I cut him off by throwing myself in his arms. At first he was startled, but quickly returned the gesture, holding me tight. "Don't be sorry, Jim!" I was sobbing, sniffing, and smiling all at once. "You saved us, and you saved me more times I can count now."
"You know I'd save you no matter what, right?"
