【 SEASON 1 EPISODE 1: PART ONE 】
The summer sun hung low in the sky, casting golden reflections across the clear blue water of Paloma's backyard pool. Kitty Song Covey was sprawled out on a pink donut-shaped pool float, lazily drifting as she cradled her phone to her ear. Her long-distance boyfriend, Dae, was on the other end, his voice crackling faintly through the speaker.
"I just miss you so much, Dae," Kitty sighed, trailing her fingers through the water as she spoke. Her dark sunglasses hid the sadness in her eyes, but the pout in her voice was unmistakable. "It's not fair. Long-distance sucks. I should be there with you—"
Suddenly, a splash of cold water hit her face, making her shriek and nearly drop her phone into the pool. "Paloma!" she yelped, wiping her face with one hand while holding her phone as far above the water as possible.
Paloma, half-submerged in the water with her dark curls slicked back, grinned mischievously. "Come on, Kitty! Stop sulking over Dae! You've been moping all day. I'm the one stuck here with you while your boyfriend is off in Seoul, being all romantic in another country."
Kitty shot her a glare, using her foot to splash water back in Paloma's direction. "I am not moping!"
Paloma raised a brow. "You literally just said, and I quote—'Long distance sucks, I should be there with you,' cue sad voice."
"Whatever," Kitty muttered, cheeks flushing slightly as she returned her attention to her call. "Sorry, Dae—"
Before she could finish, a loud chime interrupted.
Both their phones buzzed in sync. The familiar notification sound echoed across the pool deck, making them freeze for a beat.
Kitty lifted her sunglasses, squinting at her phone screen as her heart skipped a beat. Incoming Call: Korean Independent School of Seoul (KISS).
Paloma, who had just lunged for her phone sitting on the pool's edge, gasped loudly. "Oh my God!"
They exchanged wide-eyed looks, the pool momentarily forgotten.
"Dae, I gotta call you back!" Kitty said quickly, ending the call and sitting up on her float, water dripping from the edges as she fumbled to answer. Paloma was already swiping her screen, both girls holding their breath as they answered at the same time.
Paloma's voice trembled slightly with excitement as she spoke first. "Hello? Yes, this is Paloma Diego-Castillo—"
Kitty pressed her own phone to her ear, heart hammering as she tried to listen to her call.
On the other end of the line, a warm voice spoke in perfect English. "Hello, Miss Song Covey? I'm calling from the Korean Independent School of Seoul. Congratulations! You've been accepted into our cultural exchange program. We would love to invite you to join us this semester—"
Kitty felt her heart burst in her chest. "Wait—seriously? Oh my God! Yes! Thank you so much! I—I accept! I'll be there, um, in twenty-four hours? Yes, of course! Thank you!"
Simultaneously, Paloma was having her own outburst. "Are you serious?! Yes! Thank you! I accept, I'll be there! Oh my God, thank you so much!"
The moment they hung up, the silence was filled only with the sound of water lapping against the pool's edge. Then—
"I GOT IN!" Kitty shrieked, scrambling off her float with a splash as she nearly fell into the water.
"ME TOO!" Paloma screamed, practically leaping out of the pool, water cascading off her as she clutched her phone like a trophy.
They stared at each other for half a second before erupting into a shared scream of excitement, bouncing on their feet in the shallow end of the pool, splashing wildly as they jumped up and down.
"This is actually happening! We're going to KISS!" Paloma yelled, shaking Kitty's shoulders.
"We're going to Seoul!" Kitty echoed, breathless with joy.
Paloma grabbed Kitty's hands, grinning so wide her face hurt. "You're gonna see Dae, and I'm finally gonna meet the love of my life! Manifesting it now!"
Kitty nodded, her face glowing with excitement. "Paloma, this is huge. Our moms went there, and now we're following in their footsteps! It's like—fate or something."
Paloma gasped dramatically. "Oh my God, what if it's even better than fate? What if it's, like, a rom-com adventure?"
Kitty snorted, splashing her again. "You're such a nerd."
"You love me," Paloma said, sticking out her tongue before wading toward the pool ladder. "Okay, okay, we need to tell our families and PACK! We have a flight to catch!"
"Wait—what even is the dress code at a fancy international school? Do we need, like, blazers?"
Paloma shrugged. "We'll figure it out later! Right now, we're going to freaking Seoul!"
They squealed again, the reality finally sinking in as they scrambled out of the pool, dripping wet but too excited to care. Their next adventure was about to begin.
Paloma stood in the middle of the Diego-Castillo living room, wringing her hands and pacing so much she was sure she was wearing a groove into the hardwood floor. The acceptance call from KISS had been thrilling—like she was floating on air—but now, with reality settling in, a nervous weight pressed heavy on her chest. Getting in was the easy part. Now she had to face her older sister, Frankie, and convince her to let her go.
The walls around her were filled with memories—framed photos of family vacations, Paloma's kindergarten graduation, and candid moments of their mother smiling, her dark hair caught in the sunlight. But the picture Paloma kept glancing at was older, a little worn around the edges. It was her mother as a teenager, standing arm-in-arm with a girl Paloma now knew was Eve Song Covey—Kitty's mom. Both were dressed in uniforms from the Korean Independent School of Seoul (KISS), flashing peace signs and carefree grins under a banner with the school's name.
The sound of a key turning in the lock snapped Paloma back to the present.
Frankie walked in, looking tired but still graceful, as always. Her scrubs were wrinkled from what must have been a long shift at the clinic, and her dark hair was slipping loose from the bun she had hastily tied up earlier. She kicked off her shoes by the door, rubbing her temple before noticing Paloma practically vibrating with tension.
"Okay... What's with the pacing? Did you fail a test or something?" Frankie asked, raising a brow as she set her keys down in the bowl by the door.
Paloma inhaled sharply. It's now or never.
"Frankie, you have to let me go to KISS with Kitty!" she blurted, her words spilling out so fast they tumbled over each other.
Frankie blinked, clearly caught off guard. "Wait—what?"
Paloma took a deep breath, forcing herself to slow down. "You know those pictures Mom kept in the attic? The ones of her and Kitty's mom together? They went to school together at KISS in Seoul, and when Kitty and I found them, we got curious and... well, we applied. Just for fun! I didn't think we'd actually get in, but we both did! And it's this incredible cultural exchange program, and I—"
Frankie's arms crossed over her chest, her expression hardening. "Hold on. Back up. You applied to go to a school in another country without telling me? Paloma, this is a huge deal. Why the sudden obsession with Korea?"
Paloma felt her stomach twist. She hadn't meant for it to sound so impulsive. She tried to steady her voice, the words softening.
"It's not just Korea, Frankie. It's Mom." She glanced toward the old photo again. "She never talked much about her life before us. But KISS—it was a big part of her past. She met Kitty's mom there. I just... I feel like there's so much we don't know about her. About who she was before she became our mom. I want to understand her better."
Frankie's expression softened just a touch, her eyes flicking toward the photo on the wall before refocusing on Paloma.
Paloma pressed on. "And it's not just that! Kitty wants to go so she can see Dae, her long-distance boyfriend. This whole thing—it's about friendship, culture, and family. Please, Frankie. I'll be careful. I'll work hard. I swear. You know I wouldn't be asking if it wasn't important."
Frankie sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Paloma... It's a huge decision. You'll be on the other side of the world. No family nearby. Are you sure you're ready for that kind of responsibility?"
Paloma nodded so quickly it felt like her head might fall off. "Yes! I am! I'm not a kid anymore, Frankie. I can handle this. I promise."
Frankie studied her closely, lips pursed, weighing her words.
After a long pause, she finally exhaled. "Okay."
Paloma blinked, hardly believing her ears. "Wait... Really?"
Frankie nodded, pointing a finger at her. "But—only if you keep your grades up and check in with me regularly. No slacking, no skipping classes, and absolutely no sneaking out or breaking the rules. If I find out you're messing around, I'll pull you out of that school so fast your head will spin. Got it?"
Paloma's face split into the widest grin she'd ever had, practically bouncing on her toes as she threw her arms around her sister. "Yes! Thank you, thank you, thank you! You're the best!"
Frankie chuckled, though the concern in her eyes lingered as she hugged her back. "Yeah, yeah. Just—be careful, okay? And go call Kitty before you explode or something."
Paloma didn't need to be told twice. She spun around, practically diving for her phone, her fingers fumbling as she hit the call button for Kitty's number.
It barely rang before Kitty picked up, sounding breathless. "Paloma? What happened? Did she say yes?"
Paloma could barely contain her excitement. "SHE SAID YES! WE'RE GOING TO KISS!"
Kitty gasped so loudly it nearly pierced Paloma's eardrums. "NO WAY! FRANKIE SAID YES?!"
"Yes, yes, yes! Pack your bags, girl! Seoul, here we come!"
Both girls screamed in unison, the kind of high-pitched, joyful squealing only best friends could pull off. The adventure of a lifetime had just begun.
