     "STOP SMILING AT YOUR PHONE."

     Amandla's head snapped up and she met the smirking stares of Zendaya and Laura, who was spending the night in the hotel room with them. "W-Why are you both looking at me like that?" the black-haired girl questioned, tossing her phone onto the couch behind her.

     "You so like him," Laura laughed, leaving the girl more confused as Zendaya chuckled, nodding in agreement.

     "Like who? Tom?" the girl asked, raising a brow.

     Blinking, Zendaya gave her a dead-panned look. "Who else would we be talking about? It's so obvious you like him, dude," she said, grabbing a handful of popcorn from the bowl in front of her.

     Amandla furrowed her brows, quickly shaking her head, "No, no, no, no. I don't like Tom. I mean, I do, but not like that. No, we're just friends."

     It appeared neither of them bought her words as they gave her pointed looks, their brows both raised in skepticism.

     "What?"

     Laura rolled her eyes playfully as the girl to her right scoffed. "Yeah, neither of us are buying that," she sang, watching as Amandla sighed, running her hands through her hair.

     Zendaya frowned slightly, noticing the slight crease in the latter's forehead and how she was playing with the rings on her hands. "Hey, Mands, what's up?" she asked softly, reaching over and stopping the fiddling. The girl sighed again, her eyes locked on Zendaya's hand on top of hers.

     "My parents are ruining not only their marriage right now, but their friendship. They've been together for twenty-five years, and they've been arguing non-stop for five. It's gotten worse, Z. Most nights my dad isn't even home, he's staying at his friend's place because my mom doesn't want him in the house. My dad's side of the family is already estranged, and everyone on my mom's side hates each other, and now my own parents are falling apart. My family is self-destructing and all I keep seeing and hearing is heartbreak, divorce, and betrayal, one after the other.

     "How does a family go from love and compassion to complete and utter radio silence? No phone calls, no Christmas cards, no texts, no reunions, no nothing. Everyone went from giving a damn to not give one single shit about anything or anyone. How does that happen? How does a family get to the point where it's become so shattered and broken that they can't even say another person's name?

     "Love became hatred and relationships became a concept, not a reality. I don't want to drag anyone into that, not my friends and especially not Tom. If I allow myself to develop a serious relationship with someone, there's a larger chance than I like to admit that it could turn into what my parents have. That's not fair and I don't want that. So, no. I don't like Tom like that—I can't. As much as every part of me wants to, I can't." Amandla whispered, her eyes clenched shut as she felt a small weight being let off her chest.

     She hadn't been able to talk to anyone about her parents and her feelings for Tom yet and now that she just did, she felt somewhat better. However, that didn't remove the fist-shaped gap in her heart that was killing her more and more every time her parents fought.

     Zendaya frowned deeply, glancing at Laura who was looking down at her hands, a small frown on her face. Sighing, she turned her gaze back to the girl in front of her. "Amandla, you are the most loving and caring person I know. You do so much for others, I included, and you always do your best to treat others with kindness, even when they don't deserve it. People like you aren't common and your family's problems won't change who you are. Not if you don't let them. You deserve happiness and you shouldn't let other people's mistakes and problems define your choices before you even make them. Don't shut out the opportunity to have something beautiful with someone else. Love is sacred, don't close the door on it."

     Looking up, the black-haired girl nodded, her eyes open and glossy.

     "In other words," Laura added, "don't shut Tom out if your friendship turns into something more. Let him in. Let your friends in. Everyone you care about is here for you. My parents used to fight a lot too and I don't have the most stable family either so I get where you're coming from. Just don't let them influence how you carry out your life."

     Amandla blinked away her tears as she reached over and grabbed onto both of the girls' hands. "Thank you," she said, giving them small smiles that they returned right away.

     hey everyone!! i hope you all enjoyed the twentieth chapter!

     ya girl just got out her wisdom teeth yesterday and i'm in so much pain. anyways! it looks like there's more to amandla than what we've seen so far. her background and family will be delved into further on and we'll be getting to see a side of her that won't be shone too often. i'm very excited for the rest of this book.
