───── ❛ 最初の電話 ❜ ─────

実生活 // 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞

     GROANING, THE CURLY-HAIRED GIRL FLOPPED DOWN ON HER BED, SLAMMING HER FACE INTO HER PILLOW. In the background, she could vaguely hear her parents yelling at one another downstairs, an event that had been occurring way too often now for the girl's liking.

     "Fine! Go then!"

     "Valaria, just fucking listen to me—"

     Amandla squeezed her eyes shut tightly, trying to block out the screaming and shouting as much as she could. Feeling the palms of her hands becoming sweaty and the familiar tightness in her chest, she quickly sat up, reaching for her phone with shaky hands. The small screen lit up, casting a luminous shadow over her face as she tried typing her passcode in but failing multiple times due to the unsteady hold she had on the phone.

     Uneven breaths tumbled from her lips as she quickly went to her contacts, clicking on a random one with blurry eyes, hoping that somebody would answer and distract her from the chaos a floor below her.

     The panic swimming in her abdomen was a cluster of spark plugs and she could physically feel the anxiety boiling up inside of her chest. The sound of her breathing grew more rapid and shallow as all she could focus on was the sound of slamming doors.

     "Amandla?" A voice that she'd only ever heard through video clips and movies echoed through the phone, snapping her attention away from the sound of her father shouting.

     She pushed her hair out of her face. "Can you talk to me please?" she asked, cringing at the sound of her voice cracking.

     There was shuffling on the other end before the latter responded, "Y-Yeah, of course, what uh what do you want me to talk about?"

     "Anything, it doesn't matter," Amandla breathed quickly, clenching her left hand into a tight fist, shutting her eyes firmly as another door slammed.

     On the opposite end of the line, Tom frowned as he heard what he assumed to be a door slam. It was evident in the way Amandla was talking that something wasn't right and it was concerning.

     Sure, the two had never spoken on the phone before, they'd only recently exchanged phone numbers, thank God, and Tom hadn't had the chance to ask if she wanted to FaceTime or call yet, regardless, the boy could tell something was wrong.

     "I was uh, actually thinking about you right before you called me. Harrison started watching your videos and I think he might be turning into a fashionista. He spent the majority of the day going through my clothes and telling me what I did and didn't look good in. Apparently, I don't look good in a lot of things," Tom chuckled, the corner of his lips curling up into a smile as he heard Amandla laugh softly on the other end.

     A blush rose onto the curly-haired girl's cheeks and she smiled, reopening her eyes and looking down at her bedsheets. "I'd have to disagree with Harrison. You would look good in anything," she confessed, not realizing what exactly it was that she was saying until it was too late.

     "I could say the same for you," Tom responded back without missing a beat, his words causing her cheeks to flame up even more.

     "So, are you still in London?" Amandla asked, not noticing the fact that her breathing had gone back to normal and her hands had stopped shaking. "Yeah, I am. Only for a few more days and then I'll be flying to Atlanta to film for the next couple of months," the British boy answered, trying not to sound too excited at the fact that he would be in the same state as her in less than a week.

     Getting up from her bed, Amandla walked to her bathroom, cringing as she caught a glimpse of her reflection. "I'm assuming you're pretty excited to start filming then," she said, putting the phone on speaker as she reached for her hairbrush, glaring at the tangled mess of curls falling over her shoulders and face.

     "You assume correctly, but I might be more excited at the fact that I'll meet you soon," Tom admitted, noticing the silence that answered him on the other end. "Mandy, you there?"

     Blinking, Amandla quickly nodded but face-palmed herself when she remembered that he couldn't see her. "Yeah, yeah, I'm here; I heard you. I'm just, you know, trying to process the fact that Thomas the Train wants to actually meet me," she answered, biting down on her lip as she resisted the urge to squeal.

     "Thomas the Train? Really?" Tom deadpanned.

     "What?! That's what your contact name is!" Amandla stated, rolling her eyes despite having a goofy smile glued to her cheeks. 

     "Wow, and here I thought it was something cute. Your contact name is 'my lover'."

     Her heart stopped and she froze, slowly lowering the hairbrush in her hands. "I-It is?" she stuttered, feeling herself slowly deteriorate mentally; her heart melting into a puddle at her feet.

     Tom cleared his throat. "Well... yeah, I mean that's what Harrison refers to you as, and it, you know, fits," he said awkwardly, feeling heat rising to his cheeks.

     "I don't hate it," Amandla said smiling, not knowing that the boy on the other end was wearing a smile that mirrored hers perfectly.
