THE HUMAN MIND WAS COMPLICATED. the way one felt things, thought things, and the way they behaved was all rooted within the brain, where a complex network of cells obtains information from the internal and external environment, morphing this information into our experience of ourselves, the world around us, and our relationships with it. Tony Starks mind was extremely unreadable. his thoughts came and went rather quickly, the equations and solutions could easily confuse an ordinary person.
but Tony stark was anything but ordinary.
the man strolled through his workshop, tinkering at his gadgets and gizmos with nothing but concentration. his dark brown hair was tousled, small strands falling atop his forehead. he had a goatee, and his brown eyes were narrowed as his fingers fiddled with the device in front of him, mumbling to himself as he listened to the tunes that boomed over the speakers of his house.
"feel my temperature rising. . ." he hummed along to the beat, clicking his tongue while he bounced his heel. just then, he flinched, his fingers twitching as a voice echoed over the speakers.
"Sir, there is a visitor at the door." the AI informed, tone flat as the man shook his head.
"get rid of 'em, Jarvis." he quickly dismissed. though, the AI didn't seem to process, causing tony to cock his head. he didn't program the AI to disobey him.
"It is a young lady, Sir." at those words, Tony pinched his dark eyebrows together, rolling his bottom lip in-between his teeth before humming.
"is she cute?" he asked the smart system. the AI replied with, exceedingly so. at that, Tony shrugged, dropping his tools and wiping his sweaty palms on his denim jeans. he huffed loudly, allowing his eyelids to flutter shut.
"what are you waiting for, Jarvis? send her up." he then stood from his chair, strolling towards the door to his workshop and shuffling up the stairs. he continued to mumble to himself as he neared the front door, his sneakers clipping against the tile. a loud shrill sounded, signaling that the visitor now stood on the step of his door. he adjusted the sleeves of his shirt, setting his jaw before curling his long fingers around the door handle. he pried it open, peeking his head through.
"hello," he sang with a charming grin, his eyes scanning the area for the woman that Jarvis had warned him of. he pinched his eyes together, as no one stood in front of him, "huh, bye. . ."
he began to shut the door, the smile immediately faltering before a small voice called out, "wait!"
Tony stark opened the door yet again, his eyes falling on the little girl that wore two pigtails. she clutched her small stuffed bunny named Freddy to her chest, and a two small luggages sat beside her, along with a golden puppy that heavily panted as the sun rays beamed down towards them. a smile stained her lips, dimples pressing on her cheeks as she craned her neck to stare at him with wide eyes. the man grimaced, a low groan falling from his throat.
"look, kid. I don't do Girl Scout cookies, alright?" he nodded before backing away, slamming the door once again. Tony shook his head, his nose scrunching before the doorbell chimed loudly once again. he halted, huffing loudly and rolling his dark eyes before opening the front door.
"I don't know what it is you're selling, but look what I have." he snaked his fingers into his back pocket, feigning a look of shock before holding up a wad of money, extending his hand out toward her, "here's five hundred."
the little girl frowned, her eyebrows-inching together as she slowly shook her head, "I don't want any money. I want--" she clutched the stuffed animal tighter. she felt small in his presence, and she took in his appearance. she noted that his dark hair was gelled back, a small wisp falling freely over his forehead. he wore a black long sleeved shirt, denim jeans with black sneakers. he had a goatee, and the little girl couldn't help but make a face. she had never seen a mustache like that before.
"I know," Tony cut her off with the wave of her hand, "I know what you want. I get it. it's what the world wants!"
the smile on her face crept up once again before falling as he continued, "an autograph from Tony stark. they all want it. you'll probably go sell it, but you know what? I'll give it to you for free. how does that sound?"
the girl said nothing as the man excused himself, no doubt on his way to go and get a pen. before she knew it, the small golden puppy named Brandon that sat beside her forced his way in the large home. she panicked, dropping her stuffed animal and following him soon after and crouching down in front of him, muttering something about staying close. she scratched the little dog behind his ears. Tony stark approached once again, his eyes going wide at the sight of the strange child in his home.
"whoah! you know that dog? he looks like a very vicious attack dog, you should run. save yourself." Brandon rolled on his backside, allowing the girl to scratch his stomach. she smiled, staring up at the billionaire.
"yeah, he's gonna lick me to death." a cackle fell from her lips.
"listen, kid. you can't just come walking into strangers homes like this. there are a lot of weirdos out there in the world. didn't your mom ever teach you that?" he said disapprovingly, watching as a frown stained her lips. she slowly pushed herself off of the ground, staring down at her mismatched shoes as her cheeks flushed pink.
"yeah." she croaked out.
"well, where is she?" Tony followed.
"on an airplane. . ." the girl hesitantly informed.
"on an airplane? what- well, who are you here with?" asked the billionaire.
she began to rock back and forth on her toes, clasping her hands together as she stared at him through her lashes, "my father."
"yeah, well, you better go and get him, cause I'm sure he's looking for you." the man tried to dismiss, pointing his index finger towards the door. the strange little girl shook her head, a small wisp of hair falling into her frame.
"he's not looking for me."
Tony scoffed, his fingers fidgeting by his side as he stared down at her, "how do you know?"
"because, he's looking at me." Tony said nothing, shaking his head in confusion as she cautiously took a step forward. by now, her heart was thumping beneath her chest and her stomach was swarming with butterflies as her little palms grew sweaty. she quickly wiped her hands on the fabric of her purple tank top.
"we've never met before. you were with my mom Maria. Maria Fontana? my names Carmen. I'm your daughter."

there weren't many times that Tony Stark could be rendered speechless. the pair sat in his living space, sitting on opposite couches of one another. his dark eyebrows were furrowed, a frown haunting his lips as he leaned his elbows on his knees. he couldn't seem to pry his eyes away from the olive skinned girl, watching as she slowly blinked at him. she forced a small smile onto her lips, though, when the man didn't return it, she quickly dropped it.
"no. no, nope. no! time out," Tony began to chuckle to himself in disbelief, "Maria and I never had a kid."
at that, Carmen stood from her spot on the couch, bending down to rummage through her small luggage. she retrieved a folded piece of paper, shuffling toward the man and pursing her lips.
"she wrote you a note."
the billionaire scoffed and shook his head, snatching he paper from her hands, "yeah, right." he unfolded the paper as Carmen began to stroll around, her big brown eyes scanning at the interior of his large home. her lips seemed to part in shock as she stared out of the large window, examining the open ocean.
Tony
this is a big surprise but Carmen is your
daughter and I need you to watch her for a
month. its an emergency. ill explain everything
when I get back.
- Maria
Carmen turned to face him, her arms crossed over her chest, "you sure got a lot space for one person in here." Tony ignored her words, holding up the piece of paper that had a fancy font printed on it.
"what, you expect me to believe you're my kid based on this? I mean, come on. anyone could've written this." Tony stark scoffed, running his palm over the fabric of his dark jeans. Carmen sighed, slowly strolling back toward her luggage before crouching down once again to retrieve a large orange envelope. she walked towards him, allowing him to take it from her grasp.
"I've also got my birth certificate."
once he snatched it from her grasp, she turned away once again. staring down at her mismatched shoes and skipping through the mansion, "your name is on it." her little voice called out.
"yeah, my name is. . ." he laughed to himself before itching his temple, "my name?"
Carmen hadn't heard him, as she was too busy muttering to her golden haired puppy. her lips were in a pout as she raised her voice a few octaves, Brandons tail uncontrollably wagging in excitement.
"you know, I don't like liars." Tony called out with a passive grin, "my names not on this."
at the sight of his name printed on the certificate, his smile quickly faltered. he didn't hesitate to reach into his pockets, quickly scrolling through the contacts before clicking on a familiar strawberry blonde. holding the small device up to his hear, he heard a dull siren boom In his eardrums before she picked up the phone.
"we've got a problem."
