     "Tenko?"

"It's Tomura now," The boy scoffs and pushes the younger one away, her uncut bangs falling in front of her eyes. He hated how persistent she was, always tripping over her own feet just to stay close to him. Tomura Shigaraki knew he shouldn't get close to her, villains weren't supposed to have friends, only assets. He was going to show One For All how strong he could be, and when he was older he'd be the best of the best.

"Tenko..." She repeats again, voice small as she glues herself to his arm. He hisses a sharp breath when he barely moves his hand in time, his quirk could kill her, what was she thinking?

"It's not-" He rips his arm out of her grip, the girl's large brown eyes watering as she stares at him. His dirty fingernails scratch at his neck in frustration, "-What?"

"I'm scared," Little Yasu Higashi was usually frightened, whether by a tiny spider or a murderous villain. All except Tomura, the one who could easily take her life by the touch of his hand. He was different to her though, she heard the gossip about All For One finding a boy on the street, taking him in, and raising him to be his child or something. It was a year ago and she was only four, the adults around her used big words she couldn't begin to comprehend. She remembers getting in trouble for eavesdropping, whenever she got distracted Yasu lost control over her quirk.

Controlling the shadows, at the time this was all she could do, wrap the darkness around her and hide in mostly plain sight. It was more suspecting during the day, a small shadowed blob stood out in the bright sun. Therefore it wasn't what she was born to do. She didn't have parents, the few children here were all born to have mixed quirks of the most powerful villains. When a quirk wasn't as powerful as the villains wanted, Yasu never saw those children again...

"You always are," Tomura's rasps as the two pad silently down the dreary hallway. This place was supposed to be their home, but it more so was an abandoned warehouse posing as a hideout. The two of them slept in an empty room with ratty floor mattresses and creaking pipes. Yasu was always cold, and even though Tomura was shivering just like her throughout the nights, for a year she had gladly curled up to him to sleep.

"Where are we going? It's dark." She jumps when the wind howls through the patched windows, the monsters in the night were probably going to eat her, right? Within moments she's pressed right up to Tomura, no... he was Tenko when they first met, when he lost his whole family. He was still Tenko, Yasu had to save him from the villains, save them both.

"Your quirk uses the dark, how can you be afraid?"

"It's not! That makes me sound like a villain."

The back of Tomura's hand smacked against Yasu's face violently, forcing saliva to fly and hit the wall. His eyes widen for a split moment when he sees Hana, his sister standing there, eyes soft and teary before Yasu is suddenly staring back at him with tightened lips to keep her wails desisted. She deserved it... no, maybe? He wouldn't see her ever again, Tomura no longer would have to worry about the girl who still called him Tenko. His last attachment to a once-happy life would disappear shortly. Finally, he wouldn't have to be so broken, his head would be clear.

     Because Yasu would be dead.

He stands there in the silence clenching and unclenching his fists, the younger putting her cold hand over her cheek. Shadows swirl around her feet almost like gas as if they were ready to protect the child from another blow. Tomura couldn't let her look so upset before...

     "Come here, I'll carry you."

"Tuh-To where?' Yasu drops her hands and the swirling darkness practically laps at her short fingers. They followed her every move so easily, Tomura wondered if she was more powerful than she decided to show. Or that she wasn't mature enough yet to understand. A crow squawks outside and he realizes he had been staring at the girl lost in his own thoughts. He quickly steps towards her, and rather than stepping back, Yasu jumps up and wraps her arms around his neck. He balances her light and scrawny body on his forearm, walking again towards their destination,

"You ask too many questions." He doesn't know what else to say, he shouldn't be hiding the truth from her but a part of him didn't want to admit it.

"Is it training? I've been practicing... I think I'll be able to save us both soon," Yasu lays her head on his shoulder, squishing up her cheek as her eyes fall shut.

"Quit the stupid hero act, you're never gonna be one."

"I don't believe you," She should be worrying about being hit again, but she doesn't think Tenko meant to. He was just confused, since they were clearly best friends, he wouldn't hurt her. His violent tendencies had kindness to them according to Yasu, he'd only been trying to protect her, "I'll rescue so many people Tenko."

"You won't rescue anyone," He steps into a large dark room, the silence heavy with stares from hidden figures lurking in around them. He drops Yasu and her sleepy state goes rigid when she sees the villains as light by light turns on, a low hum emitted by each source. She stumbles backward, only to bump into Tomura and his eyes quickly dart to the ground, "You won't rescue anyone."

"Tenko? I don't like this..." Yasu's arms engulf her small body when she can't see under Tomura's pale blue hair. If she had seen the look on his face, the sadness he felt for the last time, perhaps she would've forgiven him. However, the events pursued would lead to a hatred that would never stop burning in the girl's soul.

"Yasu Higashi, it has been decided that your quirk and inability to accept a new quirk will only hinder the progress of our future plans. Young Shigaraki has gratefully informed us of your..." The man speaking was tall and limber, gliding over in front of Yasu in a few strides. He practically towers over her, making the child's resolve crumble to ashes around her. He was most likely a street thug trying to make a big name for himself (Yasu had never met the man that controlled the warehouse operations), but he was sure as hell scary, "-desires to become a hero."

"But I will be!" She was just a child, her wavering voice made it clear, but on the inside, there was a passion to be the strongest hero and Yasu could see herself in a costume. She'd save the world, but no one knew it yet, except her.

"You won't be anything in a few minutes, kid," The man looks to the audience behind him, more wannabe villains blindly following orders. He lifts a finger with a thirsty smirk as the nail extends into a long, sharp bone-like blade. He tiptoed closer, watching shadows lash angrily against the little one's feet. Yasu takes a step towards him, building up all her strength and wiping away a wet sniffle,

"If you want to kill me, you need to try harder," Her eyes narrow, and before the thug can even think his nose bashes against the concrete floor, blood splattering. He curses before seeing Yasu's arm raised and his feet shrouded in shadows, the little brat had done this? A bunch of the others straighten immediately and rush towards the girl, but the room goes dark and shadows fill the room, crashes being heard.

Tomura still stands behind the younger, watching the scene unfold before him. The computer monitor in the corner of the room had alerted him that his master was watching, and he knew he had to do something. Yasu wasn't focused on him, he was just supposed to bring her here and wait by the door. He opens his palms, wiggling his fingers as he thinks. He was just a kid too, but stronger and more powerful. Why shouldn't he be able to... kill her? Hell, he was still so immature, letting attachments cloud his judgment. This wouldn't be what his master wanted.

He leaps for Yasu, gripping her shoulders tightly with all fingers, the skin beginning to decay and make the girl freeze before squirming and shrieking bloody murder. He was hurting her, really hurting her this time. A smile crept along his face as the skin started to flake away like snow in the winter, if he just held on a little longer she'd be dea-

"Shigarki, stop." The gruff voice comes from the laptop, making the boy's fingers immediately lift off the wailing girl, small body quivering as blood seeped into the porous concrete. He was so close to finishing the job, he craved it quite actually, as if  Yasu hadn't been attached to him like glue for a whole year.

"I can finish it, like you want-" Tomura starts to reach for her again before he's interrupted,

"If she wants to be a hero so badly, let's see how far she gets. Dump her outside, with the damage you've done she won't make it by sunrise."

     "But-"

"Now, I'll speak with you in the morning."

"Yes, master," The boy huffs and stands back up, glancing at Yasu before two of the thugs pick up the half-dazed child. Their eyes met for a split second for the last time in years, Tomura didn't see his sister and Yasu swore she'd be the one to stop Shigaraki. She was in a cloudy state being carried, two voices muttering about where to place their hands so as to not touch her shoulders. How wasn't she dead? Why couldn't she feel anything? Tenk- Shigaraki's quirk should've spread within seconds through her whole body and killed her...

"The kids running on adrenaline, and that creepy quirk of hers."

"I'm surprised the man wanted her dead."

     "Maybe he doesn't know how-"

The talking was nonstop between the two, Yasu was fighting so hard to stay awake so she decided to start counting every footstep that rocked her broken form. She had gotten to a messy thirty or so before a creak of a back door opened into a smelly alleyway. Rats squeaked and ran from the men as they gently laid her on the pavement near a trash bin. At least they were careful as one of them spoke,

"We're kinda rooting for ya kid. Don't die," The door slams back shut and the world seems to stop. The sky was a navy blue, stars gone as dawn crept around the corner. Yasu blinked, and blinked again. Her shoulders started to burn until she realized she was half soaked from a mucky puddle of brown water. Where was the pain? Where was the exit?

"Pruh-Protect me," She whispers to the shadows dancing around her like a puppy waiting for their owner to wake up. They were supporting her and they'd wrapped around her shoulders like bandages, had they stopped Shigaraki from using the full force of his quirk? Yasu groans as she sits up, pushing off the ground with her small leg muscles that had yet to form as she matured. She didn't quite have time to know what was happening as her feet took one step at a time, and then she was running out of the alley. There was a sidewalk at the end of it, leading to a well-lit and occupied part of the city. She'd just have to get there, just a few blocks past the abandoned zone, which now seemed like a whole factory and multiple warehouses.

It was too far, her movements were slowing as the sky brightened and the tearing pain started humming in her shoulders. She couldn't see through the shadowed braces that were still there, protecting her like she asked, but it couldn't be good. Yasu refused to think about what happened, so she kept running... no walking. Tears threatened to spill as she tripped over her heels, collapsing back onto the pavement and scraping her face.

"Heros duh-don't cry Yasu," She whimpers and wipes the dirt off before forcing herself back up, "-They don't gi-give up either!" Her voice raises to a yell as she stumbles forward in a run, the lights and commotion getting closer. The shadows fall to her feet with each push of strength and loss of adrenaline. Two bloody patches surround the entirety of each shoulder from Shigaraki's palms and cracked decaying skin creeps into her collarbone and arms. So it was pretty bad, but Yasu kept going and running until-

"Her cells are trying to attack this other foreign blood, but while they try and fail... it's slowly being accepted into the bloodstream. It looks like this has been happening for at least a year Aizawa."

     "Is it-"

"Certainly from a quirk user, it seems like they were trying to add it to hers. Can't say for certain, I haven't seen anything like this."

     "Or her."

"Exactly," The men both glance towards the sleeping child, a small smile on her hot chocolate-stained lips.

"I got in on recommendation so you could keep an eye on me! You didn't think I could be a hero?!"

-----

Yasu wasn't sure how long she'd been crying, it seemed like she hadn't stopped since she lost her quirk. Moving into the UA housing with her classmates should have been so exciting... yet she was so detached from her own self. Even running down the street helpless all those years ago she felt more determined than now.

Because for the first time, Yasu Higashi was quirkless.

Of course the teacher's board had still let her stay enrolled, she was at a complete disadvantage compared to her class. With the license exams coming up, she'd be sure to fail. She'd make her own school look bad because she wasn't strong enough.

"Damnit!" The curse left her lips in such a defeated tone, that she wasn't quite sure it was herself. Her throat was burning from the onslaught of sobs shaking her body, "You're so stupid! You let yourself lose your own damn quirk! You're not a hero Yasu, you're a failure."

"Hey open up before I blow the door down," Bakugo bangs on the door, more harshly than he probably meant to, "-if you don't the others will come for some dumb 'room competition'."

"It's unlocked," Yasu murmurs, quickly wiping her tears and plopping on her bed. As much as she'd like to be alone, a bunch of others invading her space sounded a lot worse than one. Especially when that one person she-

     "You look like shit."

"Well, what do you expect!" She sounded so... frustrated, she didn't want this, "Pluh-please just leave."

"Not gonna happen," He holds two mugs in one hand to lock the door, walking over to Yasu and plopping beside her on the best.

     "Is that hot chocolate?"

"Yeah," He gruffs, clearly avoiding contact as he hands her one of the drinks and pulls a blanket over her head like a hood, "-I think it reminds you of something."

"Why?" She whispers while staring into dancing steam, almost like her umbrakensis.

"You always order it, and your smile is so big it's creepy," He leans back against the wall and Yasu follows, pulling the blanket tighter around her. Bakugo was trying to be comforting, despite being through the same hell as her. Yasu felt hot tears roll down her cheeks before she even realized it was happening.

"Why are you crying? Was the smile thing mean?"

"No," She hums and her eyes crinkle as she grins into the moonlit room, "You're quite a softy hotshot."

"Now you're happy, or aren't you?"

"I'm fine," Yasu sniffles and gently curls against the blond's shoulder, closing her eyes and focusing on the warmth from the mug, "I'm fine now."
