ii. fear
LOUISE, CAREY AND VIOLA were standing in the dock, terror evident on each of their faces. Going hospital to hospital every other week was one thing, but stepping foot on a massive ship to sail right into the battlefield was a whole other league that none of the nurses were prepared for.
One thing that Louise could never stomach was the sea. The dark depths on it caused her head to spin and knots to twist in her tummy. The fear of drowning or sinking was eating away at her, and it was blatantly clear to her sister and sister-in-law. Carey and Viola were very aware of Louise's fear of the ocean, so they knew that it would take time for the brunette nurse to step onto the ship. However, after standing on the wooden dock for 24 minutes and Louise not moving one step, Carey and Viola needed to push their sister. Louise was too frozen to protest but it didn't stop her heart hammering away inside her chest - the beat increasing with every meter that she got closer to her doom.
She knew that no matter how cruel the Germans were perceived to be, no one could be heartless enough to bomb a hospital ship - after all, the enemies of the state were prohibited from attacking such ships because they held defenceless nurses, doctors and wounded soldiers - so Louise shouldn't have feared the ship as much as she did.
"Come on, Lou," Carey mumbled in her thick Northern accent, her soft hand rubbing up and down the length of her sister's back as she and Viola guided the trembling nurse towards the vessel. "It's not as bad as you think. I promise."
Viola nodded, her slender arm circling around Louise's shoulders. "Carey's right, Lou," Viola spoke, her voice thick with a Birmingham accent. "You have to get over this fear of yours so you can focus on those soldiers. They need you, yeah?"
Louise nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat as she began to wring her hands together, her head craning up at the ship in front of her. "You're right, girls. I've got to get over it," her Geordie accent trembled as she mentally told herself to get a grip. It's only water. Like a bath. Only with hundreds of thousands - maybe millions - of sea creatures - half of which have not been discovered and the half having the ability to kill a human in a heartbeat if they wanted to. That didn't help, Louise.
Sighing, Louise shook her head. She tilted her head down to try and focus on anything over than the raging thoughts swimming through her mind, her moving feet being the best solace. She did notice the change in flooring, it changing from the familiar wooden dock to the cold metal floor of the ship, yet Louise tried her best not to focus on it.
Carey and Viola guided their sister over to the other nurses in the ship. A few were familiar to the girls, having worked with them in a hospital or two in the last few months, the others being new faces for them to get used to. Louise didn't listen to the talk that occurred in front of her and her co-workers. She didn't need to. It was the same speech every time she was transferred to another hospital, the only other thing that was different was that we weren't going to be transferred for a long time and a few different procedures for soldiers that are found from a shipwreck.
Louise gulped, her stomach churning painfully, causing her hands to tighten at the sides of her blue uniform. Carey and Viola shared a concerned look before silently comforting the brunette girl once again.
The group of nurses dispatched, all of them off to find a bunk below deck. The three Davies girls were in the midst of the group which, in hindsight, was the best idea. The small space that Louise found herself in pushed between the bunch of fast-moving nurses and the feeling of the ship roughly push through the waves urged Louise to vomit right there and then. Both Carey and Viola realised the paling skin and the hitch in her breath, so dragged Louise away from the group and led her towards the edge of the deck so she could spill her guts into the sea. Heaving, Louise pushed herself back up once she had emptied her stomach overboard, using the back of her freckled hand to wipe at her plump lips. The head nurse of the ship heard the commotion and made her way over to the three girls.
"Are ye alright, duckie?" The short, grey-haired Scottish woman asked, placing an aged hand on Louise's shoulder. "You're not seasick, are ye?"
Lousie shook her head. "No, no. I'm just scared of the ocean. Can't seem to stomach the fear yet," Louise dryly laughed, her throat still coated with a thick layer of burning acid.
"Well, you best get some sleep, love. Try and focus on everything else. Not the sea, right? Good, now get some rest before we get our first batch of soldiers," The nurse nodded, gently pushing the three nurses towards the door leading below deck where all the nurse would sleep.
Louise nodded. "Yeah, Focus on everything else," She mumbled to herself, taking a deep breath. Carey and Viola pushed her down onto one of the spare beds, the two girls moving to the bunk bed beside hers. "I can do this."
