brittany o'grady as...
Joey Findlay

When John B was fifteen, he met Josephine Findlay.

At the time, she was just a touron that happened to stumble across The Wreck one evening, searching for some onion rings. He was fifteen, he was crazy hormonal and JJ yapping in his ear about the super hot chick over at the bar, wasn't helping. And yeah, Joey was super hot. John B thought so anyways, like one of the most gorgeous girls he'd ever seen in his life.

The first time he talked to her, he really was turned off. Joey had a attitude about nearly everything, the type of personality most people try to stay away from. And it was true, he wanted to stay away from her. Well, correction, he tried to stay away from her. The rude ass comments she'd make, the way she'd complain about everything, her negativity, not to mention the annoying fear of germs she had and acted like everything and everyone was a walking virus.

That hatred didn't last very long when John B stumbled across her again, and again, and again, and every day for the first month of summer. She nearly ran him over on her stupid little moped, multiple times at that. And yet, as much as John B told himself he wanted nothing to do with her, he just couldn't stay away. Things escalated quickly and that obnoxious annoyance they had for each other flew out the window when he shoved her into the ocean, off the docks near Popes house, jumping in after her and laying a kiss right on her lips.

Joey never had a boyfriend, never had anything. John B was all she'd ever known, and god did she fall in love with him so quick. She was just fifteen and was sure they'd been soulmates, she simply just couldn't see her days spend with anyone else. They bickered like a old couple, and it took a while for his friends to warm up to her, but they'd been ridiculously in love that it was almost sickening. John B taught Joey all she needed in just three months, making her summer everything she could ever hope for.

He broke into these metal walls she had build up, getting to the root of all her pain and problems. John B learned Joey never knew her father and that her mother died six months ago from untreated influenza. It's why she panicked so much with germs, why she always had hand sanitizer and was wiping down nearly everything before they touched it. It drove him crazy, but she drove him crazy, and it was all just a disaster but in the best way possible.

Joey had managed to get pretty close with Big John in the days and nights she spent in the Chateau. John B was humiliated when his dad told her way too much on the front porch about the Royal Merchant, John B always expected it when they got to talking. Later on those nights, Joey would lay with him and tell John B she thought his dad could truly find the gold one day. He always shrugged her off and changed the subject as quick as possible.

A entire summer spend with a bunch of first, out door movies, learning the Kook and Pogue way, stolen kisses, painted finger nails, giggly stories, late nights, and never a second without love flying high in the air. It was perfect, they were perfect. Being in love, in summer, was the most perfect feeling in the entire world. And with John B and Joey? Nothing could ruin it.

Until something did.

Summer came to a end and Joey was going back to Louisiana with her aunt and uncle. Apart of her just thought that her and John B would make it in a way, like it didn't matter if they had to do the long distance thing, that they'd make it work. Like, fifteen hours in the car didn't really feel so bad at the time, to her anyways. But John B thought differently, and she wished she'd known that before he jumped off the docks and kissed her in the water.

John B loved Joey, he wanted to stay together, but everyone knew long distance never worked out the way it was planned. Yeah, she could come back, and he could go visit, but it wasn't the same. He didn't wanna be that guy that waited by the phone everyday, waiting for his girlfriend to call when she gets the chance. He didn't wanna go through break downs every night because his girlfriend wasn't there. It was so much better crying at night over your ex girlfriend, because it wasn't nearly as pathetic.

Every wall John B broke down with Joey, that soft and sweet side he saw in her, was long gone when he told her that. She threw her bag at him and said she wished they'd never met, leaving just like that and never turning back. She was stubborn as hell and wouldn't give in, wouldn't be the one to beg him to hold out with her. That wasn't Joey, that would never be Joey.

But it really did hurt her, hurt her all day every day. And to make everything worse? A week after she turned sixteen, three weeks after they left the OBX, her uncle got a job offer back on the island and they picked up and moved back there the next week. It was a mess, she was a mess, he was a mess. Everything was so shitty after that, John B had no clue that someone could hate him as much as Joey hated him.

She'd go to school, work at the flower shop across from The Wreck, and then go home. Just a month ago she never wanted to leave, and now that's all she ever wanted. To leave, to be away from him. It killed Joey seeing John B every single day, she couldn't stand him but was still so in love with him in every single way. And yeah, she knew deep down she was being ridiculous and his reason for the break up was reasonable, but being with John B was the first time she ever felt okay again after her moms death.

So it made everything so much harder on her.

A year later, present day, John B had managed to live with Joey hating him and moved on. He figured she had too, but how could someone do everything in their power to piss you off if they didn't hate you? But no, not Joey, she pissed him off because she was still so absolutely in love with him. And that was the problem, she never could find the line between love and hatred.

When Big John died, Joey was there. A week of vulnerability passed and then they were back to acting like it didn't happen. They acted like she didn't hold him every night, let him cry in her arms, pick the perfect flower combination for the little empty grave. It didn't happen, it just didn't, but at the same time it did.

And that made it worse in the end as well.
