Chapter 40
"We love because its the only true adventure."
Dear Kira,
It's been a while since I last saw you, so I'm having a dinner that I'd like you to come to this Saturday.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
Sincerely,
Your favourite cousin
P.S Oh, and bring your boyfriend!
Kira stared at the letter. How did he know she was dating Regulus?
She got her reply in the form of a scribbled continuation on the back of the letter.
Did you really think, I, the greatest
Marauder, wouldn't know
anything that goes on at
Hogwarts?
She chuckled, of course. She was surprised he wasn't known as the biggest gossip queen Hogwarts has ever had.
"Regulus?" She called.
"Yes!" Came the muffled reply. Regulus came bursting through the door, his tie half done. He was getting ready for a meeting when she called.
"James invited us to dinner on Saturday," she said, keeping her gaze focused on the letter she was writing in response to a letter from her sister.
She missed the look on Regulus' face. "Us?"
She nodded.
"As in, he invited you, and me."
"Yes, Regulus, that is what us implies," she respond, feigning annoyance, though she was more amused by his reaction than anything else.
"How does he even know we're together?" He paused before continuing, "Wait, never mind, he's Potter, of course he knows. Why does he want me to come?"
Kira looked up at her confused boyfriend, "Reg, James is a lot more accepting than you would think. He doesn't hate you."
Regulus mumbled something to himself and walked out of the room. Kira sighed, she knew he doubted what she said but it was no use trying to convince him now. They would go to the dinner.
Neither of them could ignore their families forever, even if it was only her cousin and his brother that he didn't talk to.
What could go wrong?
The time for the dinner was drawing closer and Kira spent it applying some soft makeup to make her self look more presentable.
Regulus, however, spent it pacing around the room behind Kira, muttering things like, "Maybe I shouldn't go?" and "No one would care if I didn't go."
"Regulus," she began. He stopped and caught her gaze in her reflection in the mirror. "I would care if you didn't go. James would too, and despite what you think Sirius cares for you too."
Regulus sighed, sitting down on the bed behind him. He looked down as he fumbled with his hands. Eventually, he spoke, "Sirius doesn't care about me."
"Regulus, you are my boyfriend and I love you. No one is going to change my mind. Now, my family, being James, and my friends, being the rest of them, can either accept that or stop speaking to me altogether."
"I can't just let you lose your friends over me."
"Regulus," she said, exasperated as she spun around in her seat, "you have never once told me that you hated any of my friends. You never once threatened to leave me if I stayed friends with them and you never criticised me for it either. If you had, I would have left long ago."
She got up and walked over to him. Stopping in front of him, she took his hands in her own and looked him in the eye. She spoke, "I care about every single person in my life, but if they can't trust me about the other people in my life then what right do they have being in my life?"
Regulus sighed, leaning forward and resting his head on my diaphragm. "They're only doing it because they want you safe."
"I feel safe with you."
Kira inhaled and knocked on James Potter's door. Regulus stood to her side, clutching her hand so tight that her knuckles went white.
The door opened to reveal James, who stood with a large grin on his face.
"There's my favourite cousin!" James grinned and pulled her into a tight hug.
She chuckled, "I assumed Tommy was your favourite."
"By the way, only Lily knew he was coming," James whispered. He couldn't have mentioned that early?
She pulled away to let him greet Regulus who looked like he wanted to puke.
James turned to face him, his grin never dimming, "Good to see you, Regulus." He held out his hand and gave Regulus a form handshake.
Regulus tried to reciprocate the grin but his nerves only allowed for a small smile, "You too...James." He hesitated, testing out James' first name. He's always referred to him as Potter.
James stepped to the side to let them through the door and Kira entered first. Sirius grinned as soon as he saw her.
"Rose! I've been dying to see who your boyfriend is!" He shouted from where he stood next to Lily and Remus. His grin fell from his face as soon as Regulus entered behind her.
Kira reached behind her and grabbed Regulus' hand. "Surprise..." she shrugged, with a smile.
Lily clapped her hands together to ease the tension, "Kira, it's so good to see you!" She rushed forward and pulled both Regulus and her into a tight hug.
Lily was followed by Remus and Peter both greeting the two with smiles. Sirius followed behind and gave Kira a hug, whispering in her ear, "Do you not listen to a thing I say?"
He pulled away and gave Regulus a stiff nod, who returned it, though Kira could see the hurt in his features. She squeezed his hand and he squeezed it back in response.
"Well," James clapped, "Who's hungry?"
A few moments later, they were all seated around the table, drinking wine and water, and chatting about their lives and jobs.
Sirius left to go check on the food in the kitchen with Lily, before James asked Regulus to fetch another bottle of wine in the kitchen with the words "Lily knows where it."
Lily, however returned with the wine, leaving the two brothers alone in the kitchen and Kira was getting worried. She hoped Sirius would not start a fight with Regulus.
Her prayers were answered in the form of Sirius and Regulus walking out of the kitchen with remnants of smiles in both of their faces.
Regulus took a seat next to her and she reached under the table to grab his hand. He squeezed it and smile, reassuring her that the confrontation with Sirius had gone well.
It's all she could ever hope for them. She knew the rivalry between the two heavily affected Regulus, and all she wants is for the two to be happy.
After dinner Lily and James stood up and called for everyone's attention. Kira halted her conversation with Remus and turned to look at the happy couple.
Lily grinned and bounced on the balls of her feet, "We have an announcement to make."
James put his arm around her waist, his smile growing wider with the second. Lily clapped her hands together and said, "I'm pregnant!"
The announcement was followed by Kira squealing and jumping up to grab Lily in a hug. The rest followed after her and soon she was in the centre of a group hug.
After they all pulled away, Kira grinned at the red-head. "I'm so happy for you!"
Lily smiled in return, "Thank you! I can't wait to introduce the little one to the family!"
James rested his arm on her shoulder, "I can't wait for him to be born. He'll be an amazing quidditch player just like me."
Lily scoffed, "And if it's a girl?"
James looked at her and grinned, "Then she'll also be a great quidditch player."
Sirius chuckled, "Let's hope they get your smarts Lily, I'd feel bad for the poor child if they ended up anything like James." The comment was followed by laughter and a huff of indignation before grinning. He was too happy at the thought of having a family.
Kira watched as they all chatted, excited at the news. She rested her head on Regulus' shoulder, and in return he rest his head on hers.
She couldn't have been happier then.
