CHAPTER THREE
"Tonight is the full moon. We should assume that Klaus is prepared to break the curse," Sol hears Elijah say as she walks into the boarding house.
"Elena said that the Sun and the Moon curse is fake? That it's actually just a curse placed on Klaus," Stefan asks as Sol moved to sit next to her sister, sending a smile to the original as she walks past him.
Elijah, hiding his blush, turns back to Stefan, "Klaus is a vampire born of a werewolf bloodline. The curse has kept his werewolf aspect from manifesting. But if he breaks it...He'll be a true hybrid."
"Then why are we letting him break the curse? We can kill him today. With Bonnie," Damon says as he walks into the parlour, pouring himself a glass of bourbon.
Elena shakes her head, "No. Bonnie can't use that much power without dying."
"I'll write her a great eulogy," Damon argues, earning glares from Stefan and Elena.
"It's not an option, Damon."
Stefan glances back to the original, "All right, how do we break this curse?"
"Well, the ritual itself is relatively straightforward. The ingredients, so to speak, you already know."
"The moonstone," Stefan says aloud as he makes a mental list.
"A witch will channel the power of the full moon to release the spell that's bound within the stone. After that, Klaus, being both werewolf and vampire, will sacrifice one of each."
"And where do I fit into it?" Elena asks.
"The final part of the ritual," Elijah answers as he grabs a box out of one of the bookshelves, before opening it revealing a small glass bottle. "Klaus must drink the blood of the doppelgänger...to the point of your death."
"And that's where you come in."
The original holds up the small glass bottle, "This is an elixir that I acquired some 500 years ago for Katerina. It possesses mystical properties of resuscitation."
"So I'll be dead?"
"And then you won't."
Damon scoffs, "That's your plan? A magical witch potion with no expiration date? You want to come back to life, what about John's ring?"
"Those rings only work on humans. The doppelgänger's a supernatural occurrence. Odds are, the ring won't work."
"I'll take those odds over your elixir. What if it doesn't work, Elena?"
The doppelganger shrugs, "Then I guess I'll just be dead."
Damon stares at her for a moment before walking out of the room.
"Do we know if Klaus has everything he needs to do this? Does he have a werewolf?" Elena speaks up after a moment.
"Klaus has been waiting to break this curse for over a thousand years. If he doesn't already have a werewolf, my guess is by tonight, he will."
"Why don't you just wear the ring and drink Elijah's weird elixir? Then everyone's happy and there's a higher chance of survival," Sol asks after processing the conversation.
"Would that work?" Elena asks.
"There would be no harm. Sol is right, it would add a layer of protection."
"Then we'll do that."
— — —
As Sol was walking out of the boarding house the door opened and Alaric appeared. Sol acted quickly, holding the man by his throat against the wall.
"You were stupid to come here, Microdick."
"Microdick? Hey kid, I don't even know who you are. Why don't you let me go and we can talk?" The man asks as he struggles to breathe against her hold.
"Get out," Jenna's voice comes from behind her, the strawberry blonde pointing a crossbow at the man.
"Jenna, Jenna!" Alaric shouts as he holds his arms up.
"Get out!"
"Jenna, put the crossbow down, okay? It's me. And tell the kid to let me go."
"Stay away from me."
Elena, Stefan and Elijah barge into the doorway, Elijah immediately moving near Sol.
"What's going on?" Elena asks, alarmed.
"It's me, Elena, I swear, okay? He let me go. Klaus let me go," Alaric answers, choking against Sol's hold.
"Prove it."
Alaric turns his head to face Jenna who still held her crossbow, "Okay, uh, the first night you and I spent together, Jeremy walked in right when I was about to-"
The woman's eyes widen as she lowers her crossbow, "Okay, it's him. You can let him go, Sol."
The twenty-year-old stares at him for a moment before reluctantly taking her hand off his throat, letting his body drop to the ground.
"Why did he let you go?" Stefan questions as he helps Alaric up from the floor, the man rubbing his throat.
"He wanted me to deliver a message. The sacrifice happens tonight."
— — —
"So, you don't remember anything that happened?" Stefan asks Alaric as the group moves back into the parlour.
Alaric groaned as he continued to rub his throat, "No. It's like I blacked out and woke up three days later... Katherine was there."
"She's under compulsion. Damon snuck her some vervain, but she can't leave until Klaus tells her she can."
"Where is Damon?" Elena asks, earning a confused look from Sol and Jenna.
"I saw him go upstairs." Elena smiles at her aunt before leaving.
"So what else did I do? And who's the kid?"
"Sol Gilbert, Elena and Jeremy's older sister... So you're Aunt Jenna's new boyfriend?"
The man slowly nods watching as the girl turns to Jenna before whispering, "You could do better."
The vampires in the room laugh at her words, all silently agreeing with her.
"How are you so strong? Are you a vampire?"
"Gross. Definitely not. I just came home from the air force."
Alaric stares at her confused, Elijah mirroring his face. "You were in the army?"
"Mhm. One tour. Left right after... shit hit the fan. So Alaric, what makes you think you're good enough for my aunt?"
Before Alaric could even think of an answer, a loud bang came from Damon's room. Sol, followed by Stefan, quickly ran upstairs, knowing her sister was up there.
She quickly finds Damon's room with the help of Stefan only to see Elena on the floor, blood covering her face.
She kneels in front of her younger sister, "Are you okay, El? Did he hurt you?"
"He- he- he fed me his blood. If the ritual happens- If it happens and I die I become a vampire," Elena quaked as she held onto her sister, not daring to let go of her comforting hold.
Sol turns her head to face the Salvatore, her eyes set in a glare. "Touch her again and I kill you. Got it, Salvatore?"
The blue-eyed man nods, a frightened look in his eyes. Before he could leave, Stefan punches him across his jaw, his head snapping to the side.
"How could you take that choice away from her?" Stefan yells as Elena sobs into her sister's neck.
"Go ahead. Wish me an eternity of misery. Believe me, you'll get over it."
Stefan rushes over, pushing Damon through a mirror earning a frightened gasp from Elena. Damon retaliates by grabbing the end of a chair before stabbing it into Stefan's side.
"Admit it. You just wish you had the balls to do it yourself," Damon seethed before he vamp sped out of the room, Jenna and Alaric running in the second he was gone.
"Oh my god," Jenna mutters as she stares at the wood which lay punctured in Stefan's stomach.
"Okay, Jenna. In the basement downstairs are some blood bags. Go get them, now."
The strawberry blonde runs off as Sol pulls the wood out of Stefan, the man groaning in pain.
"It's okay- It's okay," Elena murmured as she laid Stefan's head in her lap, holding onto his body as if he was going to slip away any second.
Sol sighs as she stands up, moving next to Alaric. "Does this happen often?"
"So often it's practically a tradition."
"Perfect. That's just perfect."
"Want a drink? It seems to be the only thing that helps with these situations."
Sol smiles, "I would love one but I'm only twenty... God, I miss England, those lucky bastards."
Alaric chuckles, "I know the bartender. Don't worry about it."
— — —
As the pair walk into the mystic grill they both groan at the sight of Damon already sitting at the bar.
"Come on. Just think about the alcohol."
Sol reluctantly follows him, choosing a seat just a few away from the Salvatore. "We'll have what he's having."
"I screwed up," Damon mutters as the bartender walks away earning a scoff from Sol.
"Yeah, you did you fucking moron."
"Yeah," He mutters back, unable to meet her eyes.
"Gentlemen. Lady. Why so glum?" A soft British voice remarks from behind them.
Both Damon and Sol groan when they see the man, "Klaus, I presume?" They both asked in sync.
The man smirks, "In the flesh. Thanks for the loaner, mate."
Damon stands up from his seat at the bar, moving in front of Sol as though he was protecting her. Sol rolls her eyes as she moves him over to the side, "Don't try to protect me, dick."
"Any reason you stopped by to say hi?"
"I'm told you and your brother fancy my doppelganger. Just thought I'd remind you not to try anything you'll regret."
Sol chuckles slightly at his threat, "Would have been nice to hear that three hours ago."
"Lovely to see you again, Sol... I was surprised when I came home and you weren't there."
"Home? You mean Alaric's apartment that you stole? And what kind of idiot compels someone who is friends with vampires? Did you not think 'oh she probably knows what vervain is'?"
Klaus chuckles, "I guess my mind was a tad preoccupied at that moment."
"I don't suppose I could talk you into a postponement by any chance, huh?"
The 1000-year-old vampire chuckles, "You are kidding. He is kidding, right?"
"No, not really."
Damon smiles though his eyes are littered with fear, "I mean, what's one month in the grand scheme of things?"
"Let me be clear. I have my vampire. I have my werewolf. I have everything I need. The ritual will happen tonight. So, if you want to live to see tomorrow, don't screw it up."
When the original turns to leave he pauses, turning back to face Sol, "Lovely seeing you again... I'm sure we'll see each other soon."
Sol breathes out, taking her seat back as she watches the original leave. "That was fun."
"You two are going to screw it up, aren't you?"
"What if we took his werewolf out of the equation? Werewolves are hard to come by, chances are he'll have to go looking..."
"Maybe she's right. If we get Lockwolf out of the equation, take him far away from here... it's going to take him a while to find another one. And she might get over the fact I... tried to turn her into a vampire."
"I think it won't matter because you'll both be dead."
Sol rolls her eyes, "Thank you for your wonderful insight, Debby Downer."
"Sol's right though. Without the werewolf, he can't perform the ritual tonight which means I would have bought her one more month before the next full moon."
"But you'll both be dead."
"You gonna help us or what?"
"What do you want me to do?"
— — —
"Are you sure he's not here?" Sol asks as they walk up the stairs to Alaric's apartment, Damon in front of her and Alaric a few steps behind.
"I don't know, why don't you go inside first and look?"
"Fuck that. If I'm going to get murdered it's going to be by someone hot, not by Microdick."
"I still don't know how you haven't gotten killed for calling him that."
"It's a talent."
As they reach his apartment, Damon pushes the door open and a woman in blue appears. "Look who's dumb enough to come back."
"Well someone's gotta let him in... Damon. Would you like to come in?"
The vampire smirks as he walks past Sol and Alaric before entering the apartment.
"Are you trying to get me killed?" The woman yells as she holds him against the wall the act making a smile form on Sol's face.
"I gave you vervain. I'm here to collect. I got it from here Ric... Sol, you stay here."
The girl shrugs as she walks inside before her body slumps on the couch. She frowns slightly at how uncomfortable the couch was but chooses to ignore it as Katherine and Damon continue to nag each other.
"I need to know where Klaus is keeping his werewolf."
Her eyes widened, "Why? What are you going to do?"
"Dead werewolf equals no ritual."
Katherine shakes her head immediately, "No. You can't interfere, Damon. Klaus will kill you and everyone you've ever met."
Damon's eyes narrow slightly, "I just need to delay this thing."
The brunette scoffs as she walks away from him, "No. No way."
"You should like this. It's going to buy another month of your pathetic life," He argues, his voice filled with desperation.
"Right. Except that I'm not the vampire he's planning on sacrificing."
Sol stood up, walking over to the woman, "What do you mean? Isn't that why he's keeping you here?"
The woman smirks as she plays with a strand of her hair, "Yeah. He's got Caroline Forbes and Tyler Lockwood. Therefore, I'm in the clear."
"And where'd he get that idea from?" Damon asks as he walks closer to her.
"Hey, hey, hey, I'm just trying to stay alive long enough to get myself out of here."
"What if I told you Elena had vampire blood in her system?"
"What?! He's lying, right? You can't possibly be that stupid."
Sol shook her head, "Why are you surprised? I thought everyone knew he was an impulsive moron."
"Shut up, Sol. Imagine how much fun that will be competing with Elena for Stefan's love for, I don't know, forever."
"If I tell you, she stays."
"What? No."
"Then Elena will become a vampire and it will be all your fault."
"Fine."
Sol lifts her hand in defiance, a glare set in her green eyes. "What the fuck?"
"The tomb. He's got them in the tomb."
"Thank you," Damon says before vamp speeding out of the apartment, Katherine grabbing onto Sol before she could run, the girl grunting in the vampire's arms.
"You're a feisty thing, aren't you? Pretty too. I see why Klaus wanted you..."
Sol only grunts as she continues to struggle in Katherine's arms. "I hate you."
"Love you too, princess. Now, am I going to need to compel you to stay or are you going to be a good girl and listen?"
