Chapter 29 - Sleep
"Newt?" I quietly asked once we lay on our bed, my wrist resting on a separate pillow.
"Yes, love?" Newt turned his head to me.
"I can't sleep," I whispered, deciding if I would tell him the reason or not. "Because-."
I got interrupted by Newt. "Come here." He wrapped his arms around me, which of course, did not help. I sighed quietly and watched Newt close his eyes again. It made me a bit disappointed. Finally, I had gathered enough courage to tell Newt and then he interrupted me. I was so tired. So exhausted, but couldn't close my eyes.
Slowly my lower lip started to tremble and soon I was crying again, quietly, so Newt wouldn't hear. He was asleep anyways, but still. I wished to just forget about the Crank and finally sleep again.
"What's wrong, love?" Newt suddenly asked, causing me to jump lightly.
"I can't sleep," I repeated before taking a deep breath. "And haven't been able to," I added, trying to give Newt a hint.
"We'll get into another position." Newt smiled and wanted to turn, but I interrupted.
"No, no, Newt. That's not it." I paused.
"I can't sleep."
"Want another blanket?"
Jesus, how dumb could Newt be? It was nice he was so kind and caring, but still. I bit my lip and fidgeted with my fingers. "Never mind then. I'll just have to be patient."
Newt nodded. "Okay. Good night, love."

Feeling more drained than ever, I sat down for breakfast. Every single thing someone said just flew past me. A few blurred voices were around me, but I didn't bother to focus on them. I couldn't.
"Nora?" Newt's voice echoed through my head. "Are you okay?"
"No." I finally said, truly honest for once.
"What's going on?" Newt asked, gently pulling me away from the others. With the last energy I had, we walked over to a less crowded spot.
"I can't sleep, Newt," I repeated with my heart beating faster.
"What do you mean? You don't have to sleep right now." Newt frowned.
"That's not what I mean." I sighed and leaned against the wall before my legs gave up. "I haven't been able to sleep for a while. I can't close my eyes."
Newt scrunched his eyebrows, looking at me in a confused way.
Tears formed in my eyes, but I felt relieved to finally tell Newt. "Every time I close my eyes I see the Crank." I paused and took a deep breath. "I haven't slept in six days, Newt."
Newt stared at me, his mouth slightly opening. He seemed quite taken back by the explanation. "Six days?" He stammered. I nodded as a tear fell down my cheek. "Oh god, Nora. Why didn't you tell me?" Newt grabbed both of my hands.
"I don't know." I cried. "I just-." I got interrupted by my legs getting weaker, almost making me fall onto the floor.
"Woah." Newt caught me perfectly. "We'll bring you to the doctor, okay? They can do something about it." He looked at me, worriedly.
"Okay." I nodded and followed Newt. It was very relieving to finally tell Newt. Like something heavy just got off my chest.
~
Newt motioned for me to sit down on one of the beds once we arrived in a separate room.
Once I explained to the same man who treated my wrist what happened, the man talked. "I can give you a sedative?" He looked at Newt, almost seeming to ask for permission.
My breathing hitched a bit. A sedative would be nice, but that also meant I would have to close my eyes and see the Crank, probably.
"Hey." Newt bent down in front of me. "This is the only way, love. Do you want to?"
I took a deep breath before answering. "Okay. I want to."
A smile grew on Newt's face as he grabbed my hand, squeezing it lightly.
"For now I will give you a syringe so the serum will take over faster, but after that, you'll get some pills. If you take them every night before you go to sleep, that would help."
I nodded and watched the man getting ready the syringe. "Ready?" Newt whispered. Again, I nodded. Too tired to say something else. The man slowly inserted the needle into my upper arm, causing me to wince lightly. I had never liked syringes.
Once the man pulled the needle out, Newt helped me lay down on the bed. Immediately I felt the sedative working. My vision was getting darker and the world began to spin. Newt tucked me in before inspecting my face for a few seconds.
"Good night, love." He said, kissing my forehead.
I couldn't help to smile a bit. "Thank you, Newt," I whispered before trailing off.
