Chapter 21 - Hunting

"Love?" Newt asked at night once we lay in our bed, me in Newt's arms again.

"Hmm?" I kept my eyes closed and focused on Newt's steady breaths.

"Are you alright?"

"I am." I simply replied. "Are you?"

"I'm alright. Are you sure you're alright?" Newt added worriedly.

Confused I opened my eyes, frowning at Newt. "Yes, Newt, I'm alright. Why are you asking?"

"I just wanted to make sure." Newt shrugged. I raised my eyebrows. Something was off. Newt sighed lightly. "I saw the butterfly on your arm. What does it mean?"

"Something Liana said. Whenever I feel like harming, I just draw a butterfly on my wrist and act like it's someone important. Like you. If I cut myself, then I killed the butterfly. If I don't, it'll live." I explained.

Newt listened attentively, nodding slowly. "I like that idea."

I bit my lip and looked at Newt. "I told Thomas," I whispered. "He asked about the butterfly and the cuts."

"What did he do?" Newt wondered, drawing circles on my back, making my body tingle.

"He hugged me."

A big smile appeared on Newt's face. He seemed very happy about it. "I'm glad." He paused. "I'm going to Sonya tomorrow."

"Really?" I asked, surprised. "That's great! Have fun."

"Thanks, love." Newt chuckled.

~

"Morning." Logan joined me for breakfast. Newt already left for Sonya and I had no idea where the others were. "What's up?"

"Not much. I have to work today. What about you?"

"Hunting practice again." Logan sighed. "What do you have?"

"Hunting practice too." I smiled and soon Logan did too. "They must like you because they give you so much hunting practice."

"Yeah. They say I'm very good at it or somethin', but I think it can be quite disgusting. All the blood and stuff."

"Y'all hunt on real animals? We just have plastic targets and stuff." My eyes opened wide. Logan was right, it must've been disgusting.

"I had that at first too, but sometimes I need to go with Vince and Jorge. Shucking annoying. They only keep talking and talking about nonsense while they kill some animals."

Logan definitely did not seem to like the job, but it was nice to talk to the boy some time. We hadn't talked much with just us two.

"At least you have me to keep you company today." I chuckled.

"I guess I do."

~

"Jorge, why can't I just stay with the fake targets?" I asked when Jorge, Logan, and I walked through the woods. Somehow Jorge decided for me to come with them. "You saw how I shot last time. I can't even shoot things that don't move!"

"That was because Kirsten was saying stuff to you, Nora. I've seen you shooting at the Right Arm when WICKED attacked us. You can easily do it."

"But it's disgusting."

"Deal with it, hermana." Jorge simply said as he kept a firm pace. I glanced at Logan before following the man.
"Got your bows ready?" Jorge came to a sudden stop.

"Yeah," I mumbled, grabbing my bow.

"Go search around for animals and hunt them, alright?"

"What do I do if I killed an animal?" I wondered, still disgusted by everything.

"You take it with you and bring it to me," Jorge explained.

"With bare hands?" I screamed out loud. "There could be a virus on the animals!"

Jorge sighed and grabbed something out of his pocket. "Then take this." He handed me some plastic bags, which I gladly took.

~

I walked around the woods on my own, when something caught my eye. My eyebrows furrowed as I walked closer to a plant. On the leaves was a weird, black liquid, dripping down onto the ground. My breathing hitched, but I ignored it and kept walking.

Then my eye caught something running past. A rabbit. My eyes opened wide as I tightened the grip on my bow. Slowly I put the arrow in it, trying not to scare the rabbit off. It was disgusting what I was doing, but it would be lame if I showed up with nothing. I bit my lip and pointed my bow at the rabbit.

I took a deep breath before shooting my arrow, which hit the rabbit perfectly. The animal made a small noise, but then it was quiet. Shocked about what I had done, I walked over to the rabbit, which was bleeding by now. With shaky hands, I grabbed a plastic bag and put the rabbit in it. I was disgusted by it and felt like I was about to vomit.

~

"This is great, Nora." Jorge complimented me once I handed him the bag with the dead rabbit. "Good job."

"You okay?" Logan looked at me. "You're a little pale." He lowered.

"Yeah, fine. Just a bit disgusted. I have to get used to this." I quickly replied honestly. Logan nodded and we started walking.

"Tomorrow you will be going again. Try to catch something bigger next time, all right? We can't serve the whole Safe Haven with a rabbit." Jorge sternly said.
