Chapter 1 - Rescuing
I didn't know how long I had been sitting in the train, my hands tied together with a chain. Maybe just a few hours, maybe days, or maybe even months. I couldn't tell. It felt like it had been a long time, though.
The fact that it was getting harder for me to remember what Newt or Logan looked like, hit me hard. I hadn't talked to anyone in a long time and I didn't know where Minho was. WICKED took him too, but we weren't in the same wagon. Who knew if Minho even was near me? Maybe they took him somewhere else.
Sonya and Aris sat a few rows in front of me. Just looking at Sonya made me miss Newt. I never got the chance to tell him Sonya was his sister. I was wondering if I ever would get the chance.
All of it was awful. I had tried to resist, but that was a bad decision. I didn't have a mirror but was sure there was a nasty wound on my cheek. A guard had done that.
The food they gave us was minimum. It was barely a sandwich a day. I wondered how long I would last. Of course, I wouldn't just die in my place, but sometimes it felt like I would. Or rather, I wished I could. I had no idea where any of my friends were and if I ever got to see them again.
All the emotions were bawling up in my stomach again. Just as always I craved for relief. But with my hands tied I didn't make much chance. I felt the same as when Chuck died. Empty.
~
Suddenly I heard footsteps on top of the wagon. With all the energy I had, I looked up, confused. I saw nothing and thought I was turning crazy, until a few minutes later, the wagon came to a sudden stop. My eyebrows furrowed and I looked around in the wagon. Everyone seemed just as confused as me, but no one talked.
Someone or something started banging on the steel wagon walls. "Nora? Minho?"
My breathing hitched when I recognized the familiar British accent. Was it really true? Was Newt actually there? 'Newt?' I whispered.
The other kids in my wagon started screaming and soon I joined in, yelling the Gladers their names, hoping they would recognize my voice. After two minutes or so, everyone was silent again and so was everything outside. I sighed lightly and hoped something would happen. I wanted to see Newt again so badly. I had missed him so much.
Gunshots hit my wagon and I heard multiple sounds.
"Newt! Hurry up!"
"Don't rush me."
"Shit!"
"Come on!"
I was so happy that tears formed in my eyes. There was no way this wasn't real. Someone moved on top of the wagon again.
"Newt, get up here!"
More gunshots. For a few seconds, I was scared. Scared one of them would get shot. For the next five minutes, I heard more shouts, gunshots, and noises. I was a little overwhelmed by everything that happened, but also cheerful. The wagon got lifted and dragged through the air.
~
After a while, the wagon I was in seemed to come in contact with the ground again. With a weird feeling in my stomach, I saw the door open. Then I gasped. Thomas and Newt walked into the wagon, looking around.
Then Newt's eyes met mine. His whole face lit up and so did his eyes. Without saying anything, Thomas handed Newt a bolt cutter. The blonde boy cut the chains on my hands and freed me.
With tears falling down my cheeks, I hugged Newt tighter than I ever did before. I took up the familiar smell again as I cried into his shoulder. Newt put a hand on my head and held me tightly too. I was so happy to see him. Finally, I felt a little less empty again.
"Is it really you?" I quietly asked, still not letting go.
"It is."
I smiled and tightened my grip even more, burying my head in Newt's shoulder. After at least a minute, we let go of each other. Newt grabbed my hand and lead me out of the wagon. Daylight blinded me and I had to blink a few times. It was the first time in a very long time I had been outside.
Once we stood outside, Newt cupped my face and inspected it.
"What happened?" He slowly moved his thumb over the wound on my cheek.
"I resisted." I quickly explained. Again, we embraced each other in a long hug. Newt smoothly lifted me, maybe a little too smoothly. Immediately he let go again and looked at my body.
"What did they do to you?" He muttered before looking at me again.
"What do you mean?" I asked, trying to understand what was happening.
"You've lost weight, Nora. And not just a normal amount." Newt's eyebrows furrowed. I looked down and to my surprise, Newt was right. My legs were way too skinny and so was almost every part of my body. "We're gonna get you food." Newt decided. "Right now."
He grabbed my hand and lead me somewhere inside. "How much food did they give you, love?"
Not much." I replied. Newt raised his eyebrows, trying to get more information. "Barely a sandwich." I added.
Newt's face dropped. "These bloody... I'm gonna... Bastards..."
He said a few things I'd rather not repeat. A little too violent maybe...
We sat down and Newt handed me a plate, filled with food. I started eating. "Where's Minho?" I asked full of hope.
"We didn't manage to free him." Newt lowered his voice and I could see the pain in his eyes.
"Oh." Was the only thing I could reply. A dark feeling washed over me. They only got me out, not Minho. Why didn't they just-
"Don't you dare think it's your fault, Nora." Newt said once he saw the expression on my face. "Cause it's not. Okay? It is not your bloody fault so don't blame yourself."
I couldn't help to let out a small chuckle. "You know me too well."
"Nora!" Someone suddenly wrapped their arms around me. I identified the black hair as Logan and hugged back.
"Alright, that's enough." Newt said when Logan still didn't let go after a while. "She's fragile right now, Logan."
I smiled at Newt's reaction and let go of Logan. "How long was I taken away?" I asked the question I had been wanting to ask for days.
Newt and Logan glanced at each other. "A few months." Newt sighed. I wasn't too surprised. It had felt like a long time and I turned out to be right.
~
At night I lay next to Newt in a bed. I never thought I would've been so happy to lay in a normal bed with Newt.
"Are you alright, love?" Newt carefully asked, moving a strand of hair out of my face.
I nodded. "I am. Are you?"
Newt chuckled. "I am."
I moved closer to Newt and buried my head in his chest. Newt drew circles in my hair again. Slowly I closed my eyes at the comfort. But when I realized something, my eyes shot open.
"What is it?" Newt noticed I tensed up.
For months I had been waiting to tell Newt about Lizzie, or Sonya, but now it came to the point, I was nervous.
"Hmm?" Newt lifted my face and looked me in the eyes. Immediately I felt butterflies in my stomach when I saw his beautiful brown ones.
"You know you have a sister, right?" I bit my lip.
"Yes, I do." Newt smiled. "Why?"
"I know who it is." I almost whispered. Newt's expression turned unreadable.
"Really?" Newt lowered his voice. "Do I know her?"
"Yes." I replied, still a little nervous.
"Don't tell me it's you." Newt grinned.
I laughed out loud. 'No. It's not me.'
Soon my laughs disappeared again.
"Who is it, love?" Newt carefully asked, stroking my hand.
I took a breath before I talked. "Sonya."
Newt's eyebrows furrowed for a few seconds, but then his expression softened. His eyes turned sweet and sad at the same time. "Sonya?"
"Mhm." I nodded, waiting for his reaction.
"Alright." Newt replied. "Night."
Confused I looked at Newt, who turned around so his back was facing me. It was not the reaction I expected him to have.
"Newt?" I shook his shoulder lightly.
"I'm tired." Newt replied with a hoarse voice.
I sighed. Of course it was hard for Newt to hear who his sister was, but now I felt bad for him. I wanted to talk about it. " Please turn around, Newt."
"In a minute."
Patiently I waited for Newt to turn around. When he did, his eyes were sadder than before. I wrapped my arms around him. Hesitantly Newt hugged back.
"I remember." Newt whispered in my ear.
"What? You remember?" I repeated.
"I remember Lizzie."
My heart broke into pieces. He remembered his sister. "We'll make sure she remembers too." I decided.
Newt nodded slowly and pulled me closer to him again. "Good night, love."
"Good night, lizard."
