CHAPTER 7

It was show time.

Kera smirked and watched her targets take a seat at a table a distance away from where she was. Zeke watched her warily when she got up on her feet and approached them. He stiffened.

Ryker and Gunner were eating silently at their table when she approached. The hall was completely quiet as almost everyone watched the scene. Everyone except the two brothers, of course. They were too occupied with their food to not give a hoot about why the hall suddenly went quiet.

It was only until she took a seat at the head of the table when they decided to grace her with their attention. Ryker immediately frowned at her while Gunner watched her with a blank look of his face and a glint of curiosity in his eyes. It made Kera wonder what colour his eyes were if he took off the contacts he was forced to wear because of the staring; not that it helped.

She knew about how Zetrians have unique eye colours, ranging from white, pitch black, golden, amber, violet, purple- hell, even pink- and each colour and how they get it varies on what abilities they have. They are a very interesting species. She smiled,

"Hi-ya,"

They blinked at her. Ryker searched her gaze, his eyes narrowing while Gunner frowned. Kera shot them another genuine smile,

"You don't mind if I seat here, right?" She asked.

Ryker's lips parted, but he froze on whatever he wanted to say and glared at Gunner.

"No, go ahead," Gunner said, still looking at Kera, though his face was still blank before he looked at his brother.

He huffed and got back to his food, his frown forgotten but his face expressionless. Kera held Gunner's gaze before she took a bite of her food then spoke up again,

"I'm Kera, by the way," she said.

"Gunner," he said, then nodded at his brother, "and that's Ryker," then finished up his food.

Just then, a feminine voice was heard through the intercom in the hall.

"Attention, all the selected soldiers for the new recruitment program are to report to section 19 immediately,"

Ryker was up first, followed by Gunner. They grabbed their half-eaten lunch and made their walk past Kera, neither of the sparing her a look. Ryker scowled as he emptied his plate.

The hell was that?

Gunner looked up at him, shrugging in answer before they walked out of the hall, ignoring the usual stares.

🔱🔱🔱

He stopped in his tracks, a scowl on his face as he slowly lifted his gaze to meet her fiery red ones. He almost groaned. She stood in front of him with nothing but a dark blue towel wrapped around her, a cloth in her hand and a massive –almost smug - grin on her face.

Ryker's right eye twitched as he waited for her to get on with it. His morning was going well as far, but fate wasn't on his side today. He had only taken a countable number of steps from his chamber; intending to have a quick, quiet shower then head out the field for his training and yet here he was, his path blocked by a 5''6 girl with hair redder than blood.

He licked his lips when she finally lifted her gaze from his bare chest to his white eyes; she froze yet again, blinking numerously. Gritting his teeth and growing impatient, he side-stepped and walked on ahead. She shuffled after him like a lost puppy looking for a friend.

"What do you want?" He asked through his teeth when she caught up to him.

"How's your morning going?" She asked, ignoring his question.

His fingers twitched; a habit he had when he's annoyed, "Terrible," he said, then frowned.

Why was he even talking to her? He wondered.

"Mine's going great-"

"I didn't ask," He said and turned to the right sharply to the boy's side of the bathrooms.

"Nice chat!" She exclaimed waving her hand after him.

He said nothing; just kept walking. Just then Gunner walked out of a stall Ryker had just walked past. The brothers were oblivious to each other's presence –or at least that's what people thought- as Gunner walked down the hallway with a white towel around his waist.

He looked up, his eyes slightly wide, immediately meeting red eyes. He clenched and unclenched his jaw. She froze, mesmerized by his golden eyes. She blinked, completely fascinated by them; just as she had been with Ryker's.

Both of them were sharp, piercing yet attractive. Gunner walked past her with a scowl on his own; almost identical his brother's. She grinned and fell into step with him. Gunner shut his eyes taking in a sharp breath before re-opening them. She parted her lips about to say something when,

"Gunner!" A voice said from ahead.

He frowned, watching as a shirtless Kace stormed towards him, his face red with a massive scowl written all over it. Gunner tilted his head slightly to the side as heads turned to the suddenly commotion. Kace stopped in front of him,

"What do you think you're doing with my girlfriend," He boomed.

Gunner searched his eyes momentarily before slowly turning his gaze towards the girl –he forgot her name.

"You mean her?"

Kace only narrowed his eyes when Gunner's golden eyes met his. He shrugged,

"Nothing, although I'd appreciate it if you kept her on a leash, it's annoying how she follows my brother and I around," was his answer.

Kace took a step back as if punched, his frown deepened.

"What?"

Ryker frowned as well. He'd been watching Gunner who's been acting off since yesterday. He'd snap at anything that wasn't him, bump into anyone in his path and barely talked to him. He licked his lips and approached the three.

The girl was on the brink of tears, Kace looked about ready to explode and Gunner looked as blank as ever; his frown deepened impossibly. He stood beside his brother, sneaking a glance at him; Gunner didn't bother looking back at him. Ryker looked at Kace, then the girl,

"He didn't mean that," was all he said –all he could say before he gripped his brother's forearm firmly and pulled him from the scene; away from the curious eyes and into their shared chamber.

Gunner groaned, running a hand over his face as he sat on his 'bed'

"What's going on with you?" Ryker asked, crossing his arms over his bare chest.

Gunner shook his head, holding it with the palm of his hands, "I don't know. I was asked to see the council yesterday morning, they told me to go to the lab and- something happened but, I can't remember anything except-,"

'Agent Ryker, please report to the council immediately, I repeat, Agent Ryker report to the council,' the all too familiar female voice said over the intercom.

Ryker looked at Gunner who looked at him.

"Don't,"

"I don't have much of a choice."

Gunner shook his head, tugging at his black hair where strands of white were already visible; he'd have to dye it again soon.

"I don't like this, they can't keep doing this," he murmured.

Ryker licked his lips, looking at his brother, saying the same thing in his head. Gunner looked up again, meeting Ryker's gaze. It was at that moment that they made an agreement to each other; a promise. They were going to escape. They didn't know how they'd do it or when they would, but it had to happen.

And soon.

🔱🔱🔱

"So they made it into the department?" Dragha asked, a frown on his face.

Glaze nodded, leaning back on his seat, "But unfortunately our source didn't so he won't be able to get information from the inside,"

"Couldn't he befriend one of the soldiers and get information from them directly?" Faby asked.

Glaze nodded, "That's exactly what I asked him, but he said everyone who was chosen was a cold, brutal, anti-social bastard, 'no offense to your friends'."

"So what now?" Ziera asked, a frown on her face.

"We wait, he'll try his best to get us what we need, but, if we're going to take down the Centre, we need more muscle."

"Then we should do some recruiting of our own," Secile said, licking her lips, already looking forward to it.

Glaze nodded.

Ditrix frowned and got up from his seat as they went on discussing how they'll go about the recruiting. He approached the curtains and pushed it back enough for his to peek outside. His frown deepened. There was about three figures approaching the house. Judging by their rushed heartbeats, they must be running; and for quite a while.

"Uh-guys?"

They stopped talking and made their way over.

"Are we expecting any guests?" He joked.

"What do you mean?"

"Three people are coming this way," he paused, looking about out the window, "-fast."

He turned to Glaze, "What do we do?"

Glaze blinked, caught off-guard by the question. Out of habit, he turned, his eyes expecting to meet Ryker's but meet with emptiness. He bit his lip, suppressing a groan.

Dammit Ryker!

🔱🔱🔱

The door burst open and the three figures stepped in. White hair; that was the first thing the Six noticed first, then their eyes and lastly their genders. An elderly female with long white hair stood in the middle, her white eyes scanning the place as the others did.

The other two were male, tall males with a strong, broad build and muscular arms threatening to poke out of their shirts. They were all in black; black shirts –thermal for the male, black pants and black combat boots. The six exchanged mesmerized looks.

The male on the woman's left had bright violet eyes while the other had fiery ones; identical to an actual flame with streaks of blue and a bit of yellow. Glaze gulped, wondering what he was supposed to do as the others waited for his instructions.

The three were obviously Zetrians, but where they dangerous?

Why were they here?

The elder woman smiled, her eyes wrinkling at the corner,

"Come out. We won't hurt you children,"

Faby cringed, Children? He wondered, I'm a teenager

Her grin widened, "Teenagers then, I stand corrected," her croaky voice said.

Faby's eyes widened and he went rigid. Secile stood up from her hiding spot first, then Dragha, Glaze, Ditrix, Ziera and lastly Faby who kept his head lowered. The two males immediately frowned, aiming to intimidate them but the woman whacked both of them at the back of their heads and their expressions morphed into one of pain.

"My name is Luine, but usually called Gran. This is Reever-" She paused, pointing at the man on her left with the violet eyes and grey-silvery hair, "and this is Kai, he has quite the temper so be weary of him," she said, blinking as he narrowed his fiery eyes at her while rubbing the back of his head where a darker shade of grey than Reever rested.

Glaze frowned, how hard did she whack them? He wondered, a scoff escaping from lips.

Three eyes snapped towards him; violet ones eyed him curiously, white ones amused and fiery ones narrowed. He gulped,

"I'll show just how hard she-!"

"Now now Kai, calm down," Gran said, her right arm in front of him, stopping his thunderous steps.

Reever swiped his gaze at the other stiff five who seemed to be frozen solid, their eyes unblinking as they stared at them. Gran then clapped her hands together, causing the five of them to jump visibly; bringing them back to the present. She grinned once all of them simultaneously snapped their gaze towards her,

"We are looking for refuge, but of course we aren't forcing you to let us stay here with you lovelies. On our way here we saw those beautiful apartments beside this house and would be glad to take refuge there if that is alright with you?" She said.

Five pairs of eyes snapped at Glaze, waiting for his decision. He lowered his head; hating being in charge and once again wishing Ryker or even Gunner was here. He sighed,

"For how long do you plan to stay?" he asked.

The five snapped their gazed back to the woman, who shrugged,

"Only until I find my grandsons," was her answer

"Grandsons?" Glaze asked, Gran nodded, before tilting her head slightly to the left, her eyes slightly narrowed,

"How did the Six of you end up so far from civilisation if you don't mind my asking?"

Glaze looked at the others who bowed their heads, all of them most likely remembering the day they lost him. It had been their happiest and saddest day ever, both at the same time. He looked back at the woman seeing the male with violet eyes trying to make eye contact with Dragha, who was across him,

"I could ask you the same," Glaze said.

She shrugged, "Well we were-"

"Gran, I think you've said enough," Kai said, narrowing his eyes at Glaze.

"Nonsense, Kai I reckon they were captured to. None of them are human,"

Kai shook his head, "Still, I don't trust him. He's too nosy,"

Reever turned his head towards Kai, peering over Gran's head but said nothing. He reminded Glaze of Ditrix; quiet and perspective.

"You say that about everyone Kai,"

Gran then snapped her gaze back at the six, "I'm sorry, where are my manners," she paused. Kai cringed at that statement, mumbling something under his breath as she continued, "-what are your names, dearies?"

Five pairs of eyes snapped towards Glaze who almost rolled his eyes,

"Glaze,"

"Dragha,"

"Ziera."

"Ditrix."

"Faby."

"Secile."

They chanted. Gran blinked before she grinned, "Oh dear, let's hope I'll remember all of your names," She said chuckling, scoring a grin from each one of them. Reever smiled while Kai's lips only twitched for a fraction of a second.

"I'm sure you will," Secile said with a smile.

Gran smiled back at her, "Thank you dear, so what do you say? Can we stay in the apartments? Oh my, what have you children been eating? I'm sure I saw a garden around here somewhere I could work on it with the help of these two gentlemen here-"

"Gran-?"

"-There was a coffee farm nearby as well as a stocked supermarket, but the food may be expired-"

"Gran!" Kai called again, placing his arms on her fragile looking shoulders.

She stopped and looked up at him, "Yes dear?"

"I swear you rant more than my idiot sister," he muttered to himself. "- I believe they have to let us stay first before you can stuff 'em up with food,"

Reever pinched the bridge of his nose, his head bowed.

"Ah yes, of course," she rushed before she looked back up at the six.

"Well?" Kai asked his face blank.

Ditrix shrugged, Faby nodded, Dragha looked at Glaze who looked at him and they both nodded, Ziera smiled in answer and Secile voiced their decision,

"Sure,"

Gran clapped her hands once, causing all six of them to jump again,

"Splendid!" She exclaimed excitedly.

"We'll help you clean up," Dragha said, referring to the apartments next to the mansion.

Ditrix, Faby and Glaze frowned at him, eyes narrowed. No one said anything about cleaning up. Ziera grinned,

"Good idea,"

The three turned their glares to her. Is she serious? They wondered.

"I'll get the mops and dusters," Secile said.

"I'll get the vacuum cleaner and the cleaning liquid," Ziera chipped in.

"I'll get the buckets and the hose," Dragha said.

Faby cringed, "I'll get my ass up stairs, thank you very much," he said, a scowl on his face as he spun in his heels and jetted up the steps taking three at a go.

Ditrix scoffed at his bluntness before he casually walked towards the living room and set himself on the sofa, grabbing the TV remote and his controller; he got back to what he was doing before Glaze called the meeting -playing video games.

Glaze blinked as Gran, Kai and Reever slowly turned their gazes towards him. He gulped,

"I-uh, have a thing to do-" he paused, "in the kitchen," he continued and with an awkward cough fast walked towards the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of water before sitting on the counter and slowly chugging it down his throat.

"That was a terrible lie," Reever said, speaking for the first time since he got here.

It was only when the front door opened and shut that Glaze came out of the kitchen and set himself next to Ditrix, grabbing the spare controller and joining the game. It had taken them a while to figure out what these things were, but when they did, they were glad they hadn't given up.
