CHAPTER 11
THE LEGEND
"Daddy, why is everyone so happy?" The little kid asked, curious.
"Because of the legend son, it's finally happening." his father answered with a wide grin on his face.
They were in their house, seated at the dinner table, listening to the many shouts of joy and beating drums. All this time, the kid was thinking that they were happy because of what had happened earlier, but apparently there was more than meets the eye. His mother approached the table with the food, a smile on her face as well,
"I'm afraid Kiohn doesn't know about the legend." she said as she took a seat after setting the table.
His sister, Maye, raised a brow at him, "You don't?" She asked, bewildered.
The boy shook his head.
"It's literally in History class." Maye said, shaking her head.
"Why don't you tell him, Maye, they probably haven't reached that chapter in school yet." their father said, serving himself.
Maye licked her lips and begun the story. It went like this, it was said that after a decade of peace, love and togetherness in their world, chaos will rise, their world will be attacked, many will die and all hope will be lost.
The suffering would go on for years, but one day, Rammoes and Tharroes will rise and fly up into the air, looking for their Masters, chosen and bound to them since birth, but separated because of the war and violence in their world.
They will be reunited again, and together, they will return and restore their world as it was before. It might not happen today, nor will it happen tomorrow, but soon, perhaps sooner than they think.
"And today, Rammoes and Tharroes awoke, giving hope to the people as predicted. It's now only a matter of time before they return."
"Who are they?"
"Our princes of course." Maye answered.
"We had princes?"
"And a King, a Queen, a princess,"
"Who are they?"
They chuckled at the boy's question, but didn't give him and answer, only exchanged knowing looks and ate their food.
🔱🔱🔱
"I had an odd dream last night." Gunner said as he sat down across Ryker with a frown on his face.
His brother cocked an eyebrow at him, two things on his mind. First being the fact that Gunner spoke instead of mind linking with him and the second being that he too had a very disturbing dream last night.
"As did I." Ryker answered, his eyes skimming across his brother's face, searching for something and nothing in particular.
'What was yours about?' He asked, very much aware of the eavesdroppers. It was likely everyone because the whole hall was pin drop silent with heads turned to their table and people sneaking glances at them from the corner of their eyes.
'I was on... Something, soaring further and further up the sky. You were there, but your hair was white and your eyes blood red, almost like fire. Your arms were bloody, your shirt as well. Your dragon breathed out fire from its nose and you smirked despite the blood on you, you looked comfortable, unconcerned by it. I woke up at that point, but it was still night time, so I went back to bed. The minute I closed my eyes, I dreamt again, that time, we had landed in a completely different world. There, we fought, there was bloodshed everywhere and you seemed to enjoy it, you had this pleased look on your face. It was... unusual.'
Ryker frowned, not believing the coincides,
'Funny, I had a dream similar to yours, only, instead of me, it was you, on a black dragon, but yours had blue eyes with streaks of white around the pupil. It breathed out ice from its mouth and nose. You rode with a sword in your hand which had a beautiful design on the handle of a dragon coiling itself around it. Your eyes were blue, like the dragon's. Then, we reached wherever we were going, and there we fought, not us against each other, but together, along with other people I've never seen before. You fought with grace, swiftly and with skill like you usually do. It makes me wonder how it was possible for both of us to somewhat similarly.'
Gunner clenched his jaw, 'I wouldn't be able to tell you.' He said, annoyed that they had even more questions to ask themselves.
'Do you think it was a vision?'
'I doubt it. I find it hard to believe that we would ever have dragons of our own to keep.'
Ryker frowned and looked up at his brother from his food, only to reel back in surprise.
He blinked, and what he saw vanished. Flustered, he ran a hand through his hair and let out a breath.
'Are you alright?' Gunner asked with a frown.
'Yes, but, for a moment, I thought I saw your eyes turn the very same blue colour as from my dream. Ryker said, almost chuckling at his paranoid behaviour.
Gunner watched his brother's face for a moment before he told him,
'I might as well tell you this. Yesterday, while we were in the elevator, your eyes changed. Just as they were in my dream. I did not to mention it because I convinced myself that it was not real, but now that the same thing has happened to you, I'm having my doubts.'
'This is getting ridiculous.'
'It is.'
Ryker put his spoon down and leaned back on his seat, having lost his appetite. He looked around the cafeteria, at everyone eating as if there wasn't a care in the world. As if they weren't prisoners, as if they were actually happy living as test subject and being slowly lead to their death.
Had he been this blinded by the system before?
The more he stayed, the greater his will to escape grew. There had to be something outside the walls, past the areas they recruit from. Where did he come from? How did he end up here of all places, or had he been recruited just as he was doing. What did he know, that was such a threat to the council; that they had to result to wiping his memories clean?
He curled his hand into fists under the table, keeping his anger in check. He was very much aware of the eyes on him through the many cameras around.
One emotion that stood out from the rest, one wrong move; one wrong word that stood out from the rest, that made you different and you get sent to their labs.
He shuddered, remembering his many days in there after they had deprived him of his memories.
Damn Council.
He looked at Gunner and sat up straighter, remembering the horrors that he would have to go through his he acts up. For his brother's sake, he was forced to comply. He gritted his teeth, though his face remained bare of any emotion. The safest look for anyone here.
Gunner felt his younger brother's restlessness and asked him if he was alright.
Ryker didn't answer Gunner and shut him off his mind, heightening his concern. It bothered him throughout the rest of the day, but he choose not to ask, knowing that was what he wanted and needed.
To drown in silence, until he was himself again.
🔱🔱🔱
Gran was glowing the next morning. As the others went to look for recruits, Kai and Ziera stayed behind and had the compound all to themselves.
Kai was outside, finishing up the training facility him, Reever, Dragha, Glaze and Ditrix had been building. He was painting it and fixing the loose nails hanging out of wood. Ziera was with Gran, listening as the elderly woman told her stories about Zetriana and its amazing people.
She told her that each Zetrian had a special gift the developed as they were born. There was no limit too, meaning that a Zetrian with a new gift that has never been seen before was not a surprise though it rarely happened.
Gran told her that her gift was her psychic ability to see the future, predict it and move close to anything with her mind, a common gift to anyone with white eyes.
"Even Ryker?"
Gran shook her head, "Ryker and Gunner are special. They are among the few who have new unique gifts,"
"Why do I have a feeling that you won't tell what their gifts are?"
Gran chuckled, "You'll see for yourself, my dear. In fact, you'll get the best view out of all of us."
"View of what?" Ziera asked, but Gran only smiled and instead said,
"You already know too much."
Ziera blinked and looked at Kai who was watching them with a frown on his face. He met Ziera's gaze and looked away, clearly knowing something.
You'll get the best view out of all of us.
What the heck was that supposed to mean?
🔱🔱🔱
They circled the world, occasionally peering through the eyes of their masters to see where they were. They still had a long way to go but they would make it, this was their destiny, they longed to be reunited with their Masters which made them push themselves to keep looking, hoping that they will find them at last.
They had slumbered for 19 years, a very long time, but now, the time has come. Rammoes let out a breath of ice and Tharroes let out a breath of fire, circling each other before flying on, driven by the site of their Masters through their eyes.
They are coming.
🔱🔱🔱
'They are coming,'
A voice whispered in their room. It sounded like a woman, an elderly woman whose voice was strangely familiar to both of them. Ryker and Gunner stiffened, exchanging confused looks before Ryker licked his lips and Gunner gritted his teeth, both of the aggravated.
They needed to know what was going on. And that needed to know now, otherwise they'd go crazy.
They exchanged looks again, only for both of their eyes to change to golden and red as well as ice and fire to come out of their mouths as they intended to let out a breathe, before their eyes went back to their normal white and gold colour.
Ryker sat on his bed, Gunner doing the same and they shut their eyes, composing themselves; overwhelmed.
What was that?
"R-Ryker and G-Gunner, c-council room, please." the intercom said, stuttering.
The brothers hesitantly got up on their feet and walked out, dressing in nothing but shorts. Most of the Centre was asleep at this point but the ones who weren't peeked from their doors at the Zetrians, noticing the black tattoo on their triceps.
It was too dark to make out what it was, but the redness around the tattoo made it clear that it was fresh.
As the brothers made their way towards the elevator, they met Jax. He locked eyes with Ryker and immediately looked away, knowing that if it weren't for him that day, he wouldn't be walking down the hallway today.
He noticed the tattoo on Gunner's arm in the process and stopped in his tracks, before he realised himself and walked on past them. Gunner looked down at his arm and noticed it.
He gritted his teeth and then looked at Ryker's arm, noticing an almost similar tattoo on his arm.
Ryker looked at his own arm and frowned, pinching the bridge of his nose as they got into the elevator. Gunner tapped the floor they were heading to and immediately the doors closed, he punched the wall behind him hard enough that it left a huge puncture on it. Ryker's eyes widened as did Gunner's.
They looked at each other, both perplexed by the new revelation of Gunner's strength. Had he always been that strong?
Still slightly flustered, they got out of the elevator and made their way towards the room at the far end of the hall, paying no attention to the human girl sat at her desk, as pale as a ghost.
They pushed the door open and noticed the council members jump in shock with fear in their eyes, before they quickly wiped it away.
"G-good evening, gentlemen." One of the women said, sitting straighter in her seat.
Neither Ryker nor Gunner answered her. She cleared her throat and speak again,
"Well, um, we-we have a-," She paused to clear her throat, "Gregor, if you would?" She asked, running a shaky hand through her blonde, shoulder length
Gregory spoke, more clearly, "Would any of you care to explain what just happened in your chambers?"
Ryker frowned but said nothing. Gunner kept his face blank.
"Nothing?" Gregory asked again, a suspicious look in his eyes.
"Why did your eyes- change?"
Ryker and Gunner exchanged looks, deliberately making it seem like they were confused and knew nothing of what he was asking.
"Have you no answer? Not even of why he breathe out ice and you, fire?" Gregory asked, first pointing at Gunner then Ryker.
Ryker deepened his frown and Gunner tilted his head slightly to the right, a classic what-the-hell-are-you-talking-about expression. Gregory clenched and unclenched his jaw, annoyed.
"Well?"
"No." Gunner muttered, answering Gregory's previous question.
That was all he said as Ryker looked at each council member, noticing that none of them held his gaze. Either they were afraid of him, or they just didn't want to.
He doubted it was the latter because they would usually hold his gaze; apparently to show off their power over him. Quite ironic that now they cower from him.
"Very well then. You are dismissed." A different man said dismissively from the very end of the table.
Ryker and Gunner turned and walked away without a word. How the council didn't notice the tattoo on their forearms was beyond them. As they walked back to the elevator, they were finally able to make out what the tattoo was.
