TO WAIT FOR THE BOY TO WAKE UP FROM A COMA DROVE THE GLADERS INTO ANXIOUSNESS, it has been five long days since the boy was found in the Maze by the Runners, the boy was left in the care by the Med-jacks; Jeff and Clint, with Nick and Alby checking on the boy at least twice a day, with a bit of hope for the boy to wake up. There is an overwhelming concerns and confusions around the Gladers, most of them were unsure what to think, some think this was a sign of trouble that is yet to come while a few had a slight hope of close of leaving this place. The Leader, Nick reminded them that they should be prepared for either answers or none and they shouldn't expect too much from the new Greenie.
The young strange boy began to slowly wake up, from what it felt like was he had taken a very long nap, utterly disoriented, blinded by the light even though it wasn't too bright and yet his eyes felt like they were being poked by needles, bringing an abrupt headaches as he slowly fluttered his eyes open. Everything looked and felt foreign, an unfamiliarity surroundings around him, found himself in strange place where the walls were made of bamboo as his eyes scanned around, nothing looked familiar at all. Endless thoughts ran through his mind at once, until his mind hit an unbreakable wall when realizing he had no memories.
A surge and utter panic filled him, he didn't get up too quickly, when he did, his head became light like his entire body hovered for a second, his arms were trembling as was his body, nauseous that he could vomit any moment, he felt very sick and dizzy. There was a sharp pain on his ribcage, it hurt when he leaned forward, he sat up straight before pulling up his shirt to see, only to find a white bandages being stuck over the wound by tape. He couldn't remember what happened to him or what was the wound's origin. To not able to remember what happened, where he is or the people he was familiar with was overwhelming, overwhelmed with confusion and terror.
Suddenly, amnesia came to mind. And coma. Was he just in a coma? Amnesia was usually a common side effect of waking up from coma, doesn't it? Unless from a brain injury, traumatic events. It was strange to know about it when he can't even remember who he is, about his past, the date, what he looks like, his own age and his own name.
Name. Name. Name . . . what is my name? his mind wandered off, searching for his lost somewhere in his complete blank memories.
Where am I? the question hit him. He attempted to get on his feet despite he knew he shouldn't be on his feet this quick, he knew he should be recovering and take it slow after waking up from a coma. He noticed he didn't have any shoes or socks on when he looked down, the ground was all dirt and soil, no floors at all, his feet tickled from the cold soil and gently pressed down. Slow and gentle as he could to stand up, he felt like a toddler about to learn how to walk, nearly afraid to stand up on his own. He held onto the cot for support, almost lightheaded, he took a moment to process as he stood still, wait for his leg to adjust before he can take steps forward. He was aiming toward a window, a crooked squared window with a dirty white blanket as a curtain.
He only took a few steps to reach the window, he peeked over the curtain to see outside without anyone noticing him, through the window, he saw people, men or boys specifically, strolling around the vast field, he saw only a forest ahead and on the right was a seemingly endless forest. The sky was all in dull cloudy grey as the gloomy weather.
He wasn't sure if he was ready to show himself to the world, he was too nervous and scared, he can't remember a familiar face he has met before, not even a parent, he doesn't know what they look like. He doesn't even know anyone out here, whoever these people are, everything was just too unfamiliar and baffling. He needed to know his surroundings first, he needed to know where he is or who these people are. He could just leave through the main exit, but no, he foolishly climbed out of the window, quietly and cautious with no one seeing him.
He jumped off the window, he landed on a damp soil, he lowered down, sneaked around the building to see the front, he peeked around the edge, only to see a vast green field that somehow saturated through the greyness of weather. What was odd about the view was the massive walls ahead, from the front to the right, he couldn't find this place even more stranger. What the hell was this place?
He then spotted two young teenage boys approaching the building, he had to move, either he leave or go back to the cot and pretend that he just woke up then demand answers. The second option sounded more simple than the first. Of course, the boy was foolish again, he decided to leave, snuck back and hurried into the forest.
Into the forest, he saw no one in sight, it was difficult to walk on barefoot, part of them already regretted sneaking away after waking up from a coma, he needed time to process, to able to remember something, he should remember something, right? Was this how it felt like? Was this how it supposed to be? Waking up. His feet felt they were being constantly pinched and poked as he walked, he was walking forward, straight ahead until he finds something else. Another building perhaps, something familiar at least and figure out where he was exactly. This was stupid, he never realized how impatient he was and kinda stubborn to figure it all out on his own.
To lose his memories was an odd feeling, also terrifying. His mind completely blank and full of absence of memories. But he knew the simple things, how the world works, he can picture random places of sceneries, different types of animals and insects. He can picture rain, the storms, the ocean and the tides. The fluffy white snow and snowflakes falling during a cold winter and how the seasons can change. He knew how the universe works. His knowledge of the world was left behind. And yet, he doesn't know his name.
The boy then came to an abrupt halt, what he saw ahead made him stop walking, after walking for what it felt like for ages, all the pain on his feet and the wound on his body and the thoughts running through his head. What he saw ahead was a large concrete wall, like he saw behind him across the field. Though, he rushed forward until he reached the wall, it was covered in green vines and mosses growing through the cracks, he found himself standing in front of the giant wall when he glanced up, as if he was next to a skyscraper. He shifted his glance to right to left, only to find the wall stretched on, like the wall went on endlessly. What the hell . . . He had to see, so he followed the wall to the right and went on.
He proceeded straight, following the wall, it was until he heard multiple people strolling nearby. The boy was hesitant on what he should do now, but at this point, it seemed pointless to figure out where he was on his own and to only get answers was from those people. So, he backed away from the wall, approached where the sounds were, he walked up a small hill and hid behind a tree. Peeked around and found two teenage boys ahead, approaching his way. He was hesitant again as he stayed hidden behind the tree and scared to meet these strange people. He spotted two more boys on his left, way up ahead, weird how by far he has seen only teenage boys and not a single adult.
The two strolling his way were getting close, one of them was taller and the other with average height. The tall boy was white, brown or dark blonde hair, had a stern look on his face and the other guy had brown skin, black long hair that was tied back in a ponytail. Anyone will find him eventually, so he might as well get over with it.
He breathed in deeply through his nose as if gathering all the courage in and then exhaled. He walked forward slowly and with a bit of caution. It took both boys a moment to notice the boy before they halted.
The tall boy sighed in somewhat infuriation, "Shucking hell, Greenie. You done sleep walking?"
The boy didn't expect them to respond this way, the tall boy said it as if he knew him. The words like shucking and greenie were new to him. The tall boy called him Greenie, his name? No, sounded too silly, like a pet name. He wasn't sure how to respond to that, was the tall boy being serious or sarcastic? He couldn't tell. Yet, the guy sounded and looked serious when he spoke.
"There's no need to run off, Greenie," the guy continued, "we're just trying help you. Can you tell us anything? Anything you remember? Maybe your name?"
"I don't think we should be asking those right now," the other guy said to the tall guy in a low voice, "he looks confused like every Greenbean"
"Where─" his own voice broke, sounded so croaked and dry. Like he hadn't spoke in ages. He had to take it easy and speak not too harsh. So he spoke out again, soft and slow, "Where . . . where am I?" hid throat was a little sore, something in his throat made him sound tired.
"You're in a place we call the Glade," the tall boy answered. The Glade, something he was not too familiar with, but sounded too specific because he knew what the glade is and what it looks like, he can picture a large open space within the forest. That's what the glade is in general. "It's all we know. Now, could you tell us anything? Remember anything?"
Why was the guy questioning if he could remember anything? The boy shook his head, "No . . . I don't remember anything, where I'm from, who you people are, I don't remember anything . . . Who are you?"
The two boys exchanged glances, disappointing looks but not surprised. As if they were expecting a different answer from the Greenie. Neither of them answered the Greenie's question momentarily. There was really a hint that they were expecting something from him, did they expect him to remember something? The other guy finally replied, "Well, I'm Julien and this is Gally . . . We're─ we . . . we live here. This is . . . home. Our home. Look─ I know this is all so confusing and scary. Believe me, we've all been there, we all woke up here with no memories, we were just like you. It actually a normal thing, but—" Julien was looking at Gally, like he was waiting for Gally to answer the rest but he didn't. He just stopped talking.
The boy wrinkled his brows in confusion. Almost all seem too much progress what this guy, Julien just said. Julien and Gally. They're all just like himself, they all woke up from a coma too before? With no memories? They live out here and this was their home. Yet, it didn't feel right at all, this place didn't feel like home. The wound on his ribcage stung terribly, his hand reached over the bandaged wound as if he was trying to keep the pain in as he asked, "Do you know what happened to me?" He needed to know why he has a wound.
"You were already bleeding and unconscious when the Runners found you" Gally answered.
Runners? He swears that every time these two open their mouths, there's always an odd word that doesn't specify, which confuses the boy. He was already bleeding and unconscious when they found him. How long has he's been out? But before the boy could ask another question, someone nearby called out, "Gally! Anything?!"
"Over here! We found the Greenie!" Gally yelled.
Why does this guy keeps calling him Greenie? Was it some sort of nickname they gave him? There was a hint of infuriation when he was being preferred as Greenie, whatever the hell that means. Multiple people came jogging their way, it was more boys, teenage boys specifically, that ranged the ages of between fourteen to eighteen. He spotted two guys that looked seemingly older than the rest of them. There were now seven boys standing in front of the Greenie, all of them stared at him like he was some feral animal, as if neither of them didn't want to get too close.
Of course, he was unaware that this new boy was the strangest Greenie that they've had, they didn't want to reveal that part yet, about how they found him in the Maze when usually new kids arrive through the Box, until they get his trust, they'll reveal why the boy was the weirdest Greenie that they had encountered. The boy was scared, they could tell by the way he was standing, ready to run off again and they didn't want him to run off or he'll might end up running into the Maze. With the Doors near it's closure. They can't lose the Greenie.
"Hey, Greenbean," an older boy that just arrived came forward, he said it with a smile, a greeting kind of smile, but the Greenie took a step back, the fear urged him to step away as he couldn't help it. The older boy did halted in response of the boy's fear. "it's okay, we're just trying to help you. Maybe if you could let us help you, we can all head back there at the hut where Med-jacks can check up on you, make sure you're okay and while we're there, we'll tell you everything we know, okay?" this older boy had black hair, thick and wavy, the boy could tell this guy was the oldest by the facial hair features that are growing out slowly.
There's seven of them, but when the boy glanced to his left and right, spotting more boys, he was being surrounded, making sure he doesn't run off or sneak off again. Seemed useless to run off at this point, also he was too frail to run anyways, no choice but to give up. The boy was still gazing left and right at the other boys that were surrounding him.
Nick, the Leader of the Glade noticed the Greenie's constant glances around him, so Nick went over Gally and said quietly, "Get the rest of those shanks out of the sight" which Gally responded with a nod, nudging Julien to get the Gladers on their left to leave and they both left. Eventually, the strangers that were surrounding him had left (unknown to the boy, they were being told to guard the Doors instead), it did eased the boy a bit.
"You want to tell us your name?" the older boy said, "If you can remember, it's common around here that we don't remember our names when we wake up"
So it wasn't unusual to not remember his own name, he'll remember eventually, will his memories come back to him too? "I don't know my name" he replied sullenly.
"That's all right, give it a day or two, it'll come to you eventually." the guy reassured, "For now, we'll just call you Greenie . . . My name's Nick, I'm in charge here. You want to come back to the hut and get you checked out? Make sure you didn't rip your stitches or something. We'll explain everything while we're at it, sound good?"
The boy was hesitant again, he didn't answer and took a moment to process. He took a long at each boy that was standing in front of him, standing behind Nick was a bigger guy but not taller and nearly older than the leader, brown skin, shaved head and his body was built. Beside the big guy was an untidy blonde and slender boy, next to him were two more boys, another blonde or darker blonde boy, his hair that looked that hasn't been cut in months and a long scar that wrapped around his neck. Next to the scar boy was a small kid, youngest out of them, possibly. Besides the big guy that stood behind Nick who looked intimidating, the rest of them look harmless and also, curious. He realized that all these strangers are all teenagers. They're all just kids, they're all kids.
Finally, the boy nodded in answer and said "Okay"
