(A/N): HAPPY NEW YEAR!! 🥳✨
【CHAPTER EIGHT】
►SPECTER
"Hello? Is someone there?"
Michelangelo, who was cuddled up in a pillow fort, held a tablet in his hands, watching a kid's channel, thunder striking outside in the storm above.
"It's the Gumbus!"
He yelped in terror, hiding under his blanket, shaking and whimpering after. The table was thrown out, landing in front of three figures.
Leonardo, who was wearing his unicorn onesie, bent down to pick up the device. "Uh, what'cha watching, Miguel?"
The younger brother popped up from the fallen pillow fort, his blanket falling on the ground. "Oh mi gosh, oh mi gosh! I was just watching my favorite can-stacking channel."
"Can-stacking..." April muttered. "Okay."
"What is can-stacking?" (Y/N) asked, her finger gently scratching her cheek confusingly. She was wearing a matching unicorn onesie with the red-eared slider (his request), since they were having a sleepover.
Unfortunately for (Y/N), she was forced to take a two week paid vacation by the Council of Heads (there were too many criminals getting murdered by her and because of her injuries). So, Leonardo and April both thought it was best to invite her for a sleepover. Mostly Leonardo wanted her there.
"It's a thing." Michelangelo appeared between the (H/C) haired woman and his brother, snatching the tabled away from him and scrolling through a few videos. "There's this one supermarket Stockboy. He builds forts, towers, national monuments!"
"Yeah, I see his channel has--" Leonardo spoke up, glaring at his younger brother who seemed a bit too close to (Y/N). He pulled her by the waist, closer to him before paying attention back to the channel on the device. "--a like."
"I would've liked it twice if I could." Michelangelo grinned before turning serious once again. "Anyways, he's at store after hours and--you've got to see it!"
Everyone looked down at the device, Leonardo hugging (Y/N) from behind with his chin resting on her shoulder, watching some kid stacking cans. The kid called it; The Lady Liberty Stack.
Cans fell upon the ground, scaring the kid and using his flashlight to check if anyone was there. He turned the camera around to reveal a can being sent into the middle of the hall, spinning slightly.
The sounds of rattling chains was enough to strike fear onto the kid, forcing him to turn the camera back toward him. He turned towards the statue for a moment before turning back, but unfortunately, the screen glitched and the child disappeared.
"What dark magic is this?" (Y/N) asked, grabbing the device and shaking it, until it was taken back by Leonardo.
"Whoa!" April awed before it fell and turned to her friends. "What's a Gumbus?"
"It's a ghost that haunts the Stock-&-Shop!" Michelangelo explains in a shaky tone of voice, pushing Leonardo away and hugging (Y/N) by the waist, which she reacted with a pat on the head, giving him gentle head scratches.
Leonardo groaned and then scoffed, throwing the device behind him, trying to push his younger brother off the young woman, but no avail. "There's gotta be a simple answer; Earthquake, magnets, giant prankster mice--"
"I don't think there's such thing--" (Y/N) remarks.
Leonardo sighed. "My point is; there's no such thing as ghosts."
"What?!" Michelangelo grunts as he lets go of (Y/N), going to stand in front of his brother. "How can you say there's no such thing as ghosts if there's such thing as us? The Gumbus is real!"
Both Leonardo and Michelangelo glared at each other with (Y/N) in between, her expression remaining stoic since she was used to them fighting like this. April was the one to break the silence. "Only one way to settle this heated debate."
"We head up to the Stock-&-Shop and temper with the mysterious forces of the underworld!" April cackles, while Michelangelo whimpers and hugs (Y/N) out of fear, earning a glare from the red-eared slider once more.
"Me gusta esa idea." (Y/N) grinned at the sound of a new adventure. "Let's do it!"
"Uh-" The ornate box turtle chuckled nervously, letting go of the (H/C) haired woman. "--I'm fine just getting the pants scared off of me in my pillow fort."
"Oh, no." Leonardo grabbed his younger brother's wrist before he could walk away. "April is right. I'm gonna prove to you that there's no such thing as a Gumbus."
"Leo, no, no! I don't wanna go, please!" Michelangelo cried, both girls following behind them.
"Yeah, ghost hunting!"
❦
"Mierda!"
(Y/N) grunted as she fell from the vent to the ice-cold floor. She sat up, groaning in pain from the stitches on her back (thank god she still had the onesie on). She craned her head upwards at the sound of screaming and grunting, only to have both turtles and April fall over her.
Luckily, she caught them, to their surprise, before throwing them to her side since she was unable to hold them any longer.
"Okay, now let's go--" Before the young bounty hunter could finish her sentence, a vacuum fell out the vent and hit her head, causing her to groan in pain and place her hand over her head. "Hijo de tu--"
"Mi amor, are you okay?" Leonardo cut her off, sitting up to get to her level, raising his hand over hers before gently pushing it away to caress her bruised, causing her to flinch. He retracted his hand for a moment before moving it behind her head, pulling her closer to him. He pressed his lips over her injury.
"Si, estoy bien." (Y/N) responded quietly, a warm feeling pooling in her chest.
"Mikey, why do you have that thing?" Leonardo questioned his younger brother, slightly glaring at him and helping (Y/N) up.
"To suck up the ghost." Michelangelo replied, getting up with a smile. "It's lined with tinfoil to keep him in."
"Guys, check this out." April spoke up, gaining everyone's attention and turning on their flashlights. "This place looks like Christmas Morning for food!"
"My light isn't working." (Y/N) muttered. Michelangelo turned his head to face her and smiled, turning the flashlight on for her. "Oh."
"..."
"...Gracias."
"This place is creepy." He whispered, moving closer to her, holding her hand.
"Creepy or awesome?" April questioned. "Answer: Both."
(Y/N) heard some jingling and turned towards the noise, pointing her flashlight at the direction, narrowing her eyes, feeling a pair of eyes on her. Michelangelo, who also heard the noise, snapped his head towards it. "What was that?!"
Leonardo sighed. "What?"
"I heard something!" Michelangelo murmured, making everyone point their flashlight ahead, only to see a model train passing by.
"A model train. Simple answer." Leonardo smirked, laughing haughtily as he walked away, taking (Y/N) away with him. Michelangelo pouted, slightly disappointed with the fact nothing was there.
"Gah! What kind of sicko puts a model train in a grocery store?!" Michelangelo complained, jogging back to (Y/N) and April, afraid of being alone.
"Focus guys." April spoke up. "We came here to see a ghost, and a ghost we shall see."
Michelangelo looked around the store, every innocent thing turning into something terrifying. He back up and bumped into someone, who turned their head to him. He panicked and turned the vacuum on, sucking in whatever was in front of him. "AH, GHOST!"
(Y/N) jumped slightly at the shriek the ornate box turtle let out before running over to both brothers and removing the vacuum's tube off Leonardo's mouth. "He's not a ghost."
"Yeah!" Leonardo groaned in annoyance.
"And now we know for sure." Michelangelo smiled innocently.
"What is the hold up, you three?" April asked, turning to her three friends.
"I don't know, ask Mikey." Leonardo gestures his younger brother who was hugging (Y/N) out of fear.
"I feel like somebody's watching us!" Michelangelo yelped, hugging the young woman tighter, which caused her to hold in her groans of pain since he was crushing her stitches, but didn't want to make him sad, so she let him continue hugging her.
"Me too." April smiled excitedly. "Isn't it great?!"
"Would it be bad if I say I also feel it?" (Y/N) questions.
"You three are nuts." Leonardo comments, rolling his eyes. "The only people here are the four of us--"
(Y/N) cut him off by pushing him aside, resulting her getting hit in the head with a mop. Both April and Michelangelo screamed (one out of excitement). "THE GUMBUS GOT (Y/N)!"
Leonardo was the first to jump into action, grabbing the mop that was still hitting (Y/N), and struggling. "There is no such thing as a--" he grunted, finally snatching the mop away from whoever was grabbing it. "--Gumbus!"
(Y/N) had her hand over her head, groaning quietly, her other hand reaching for her flashing and pointed it towards the direction the mop came from, only to find a small eight year old boy, who was smiling nervously at her.
"You?!" Leonardo recognized the kid from the video his younger brother showed them; the kid being Baxter. He glared at the kid as he helped (Y/N) up. "What's the big idea?! Hitting my girl--I MEAN- friend--wait, no!"
"Girl-friend?" (Y/N) asked, a bit confused.
"...You are my friend who's a girl!" Leonardo nervously explained, his cheeks flushed red as he scratched the back of his neck. "Y'know? But seriously!" He turned his attention back to Baxter and changed the conversation quickly. "What's your deal?!"
"I'm sorry!" Baxter apologized, frowning a bit. "I thought you were the Gumbus. Wait--" He tilted his head to the side, pointing at both Leonardo and Michelangelo confused. "Are you guys turtles?"
"We're not into labels." Michelangelo replied calmly. "All that matters is we're huge fans of your haunted videos!"
"Always great to meet my fans--in any form." The kid grinned, not minding their mutated forms, giving them the finger guns. "Did you subscribe and donate?"
"No." Michelangelo's smile fell, along with the kid's. "But we've been thinking about meaning to!" He then turned to (Y/N). "Do you think you can--"
"No."
"Aw." He frowned. Everyone just stared at him for a moment before turning their attention back to Baxter.
"So, can you tell us about this awesome ghost?" April asked enthusiastically, smiling widely.
"Or 'figment' of your imagination." Leonardo droned, his expression remaining bored.
"Perfect timing!" Baxter smiled excitedly, his hand reaching for his phone to record. "I was just about to vlog about that. The Gumbus." He recorded himself, grinning mischievously. "It all went back to ancient times: 1987!"
Michelangelo shouts in fear. (Y/N) tilted her head to the side confused, crossing her arms. "I don't remember something like this happening."
"(Y/N), you don't remember anything." April sighed.
"Good point."
Baxter looked at them a bit annoyed, but continued. "I'll spare you the gory details. The greatest stock boy this store has ever seen; Jeremiah Gumbus. Got crushed by the chains of the milk processing plants!"
"What happened to sparing the gory details?!"
"No, no, let him finish."
"Chain and soul combined." Baxter says quietly. "And now, as the chain laden Gumbus, he haunts the aisles of the store. Legend had it, the only way to free the Gumbus from his eternal torment is--huh?" He was distracted by floating chains surrounding him.
Everybody's eyes widen in shock as the kid scream for help while he was dragged into the dark end of the hall. (Y/N) tried to grab the kid, but was too late. Leonardo pointed his flashlight at a wall, only to see the chains and the kid gone. Only a stack of cans.
"Got a simple for that, Leon?" Michelangelo asked with a smirk.
"Ugh!" Leonardo rolled his eyes, moving towards the cans. "Obviously he's behind the cans."
He knocked down the stack of cans onto the ground, and unfortunately, the kid wasn't there. Only his small figure on the wall. Leonardo chuckled as he looked at the wall and his friends. His cocky grin fell as he realized he was wrong.
"I-it can't be!" He stammered. "No, no, no, no, no!" He got down on the floor, moving the cans off the floor to look for an answer. "This can't be happening. There's gotta be an explanation!"
All four of them turn their heads back at the sound of a deep dark cackle, which echoed all over the store.
"Anybody there?" April called out, smiling, while Michelangelo was shaking, his teeth chattering.
(Y/N) heard a weird squelching sound of liquid approaching them. She grabbed her flashlight, looking for whatever was making such noise. A delicious scent came from below. She looked down, pointing her flashlight down below to see a turkey on the ground.
"A-a turkey?" Leonardo asked nervously. He kneeled down, reaching for it.
"IM ALIVE!"
Leonardo shrieked, jumping back. (Y/N) successfully caught him, so he held onto her tightly. "It's a talking turkey!"
"Brujería!" (Y/N) called out.
"Guys, it's me." The turkey got up, using its cooked wings to help himself up. "Stockboy. The Gumbus trapped me in here. Hold on a second." He says, reaching inside himself to pull out his phone and a selfie stick, letting some of the turkey juice flow out of it.
(Y/N) breathed in, wondering if it was really the kid. She sensed the kid's aura, but it was faint. Yet, it was there. "It is true, he's in there." She confirmed to her friends.
"This is happening." Leonardo muttered to himself before laughing, slowly getting down from (Y/N)'s grasp, but decided to keep holding her hand.
"I know right?!" April exclaimed. She reached for the vacuum that Michelangelo held, taking it and holding it high up, while Michelangelo tried holding her back. "Hide behind the giblets. I'll smash you out!"
"Yes!" (Y/N) immediately agreed.
"No!" Baxter immediately stopped them. "You'll destroy my soul. And mess up my inventory." The boy started using his chicken wings to type on his phone. "The only way to expel the Gumbus is to build his greatest creation: The Liberty Stack!"
All four friends look amongst themselves, guessing it must be pretty easy.
"You'll have to access my video, subscribe and donate, and--"
"I've seen that a thousand times for free!" Michelangelo exclaimed, running past the kid with everyone else falling. "I can do it!"
(Y/N) bent down and picked the turkey up, that Baxter possessed at the moment. The boy tried to protest, but was completely ignored.
April jumped in the air, hollering. "Whoo-hoo! Come on, guys!"
They continue running, finding a dead end with shelves filled with cans. April stood in front of everyone, stopping them from moving any further as a full baguette bread was shot past them, catching them by surprise.
They all turn to see a kitchen with food, with the food rising and hovering off their plates.
"Oh no."
"Oh, boy."
The food was targeted towards them directly, starting to shoot more. They tried dodging it all, one of the pizzas smashing into his face.
"Miguel!" (Y/N) called out, pointing towards the cans as she moved away from bread that was shot at her.
"Cover me!" Michelangelo ran off, starting to stack the cans like in the videos he watched.
(Y/N) used her free hand to reach for her sickle, but didn't feel it anywhere. She looked down to see she didn't have it. She had left it at her apartment since she didn't think anything would happen today. She cursed herself for this.
All she could do was protect Michelangelo so he can finish the can stacking and protect the little boy who possessed the turkey. She felt rather useless.
(Y/N), April and Leonardo all used their arms to block any attacks towards the young box turtle. Leonardo yelled. "Mikey, hurry!"
Their eyes widen as the ticket machine shot out a bunch of tickets, coming over them like a tsunami.
Michelangelo was stacking the cans as he remembered, as if it was muscle memory, while everyone else was in the background fighting with non-living objects that somehow came to life. April was smiling excitedly, Leonardo eating some pizza, and (Y/N) not really fazed anymore, and still holding on to the turkey.
"This is exactly what the real Michelangelo went through when he created stuff!" Michelangelo babbled, grabbing his flashlight and turning it on before he put it on top of the can statue. "And we're basically the same level of artist. Ta-da!"
He stood proudly at his work of art. The inanimate objects loosened around the others, causing them to fall, all of them falling face-flat on the floor.
April looked over at (Y/N), laughing. She couldn't help but laugh a bit alongside her. Leonardo looked around, seeming surprised. "We-we did it!"
"Whoo!" April cheered, getting up with Leonardo and (Y/N) doing the same. "Mikey, you appeased the Gumbus!"
Michelangelo chuckled, smirking and crossing his arms. "What can I say? I'm the best."
The light on the statue flickered and turned off entirely, forcing everyone's excitement into an immediate stop. They heard something behind them and (Y/N) used her flashlight to check. Leonardo heard a thud beside him and turned to see a can had fallen from afar. He stared at it terrified, looking back at his younger brother.
"Mikey, use my flashlight." He insisted, or most likely begged, walking over to him.
Michelangelo had his hand out to grab it, but (Y/N)'s eyes widen as she moved her light above to see a giant glowing ghost above Michelangelo with pink chains around it.
Leonardo froze in place, unable to speak and simply pointed behind his younger brother, hoping he'd take the hint. Michelangelo slowly turned his attention behind him, and shrieked when he saw the Gumbus.
"Gumbus!" The ghost roared, echoing throughout the store. It shot its chains down at the four, forcing them to jump back. The Gumbus let out an otherworldly scream making everyone, other than April and (Y/N), scream in fear.
"Flee!" Both turtle brothers yell out and run, with both women following behind them.
"Gah! I hate this, I hate this!" Leonardo cried.
(Y/N) shook the turkey. "Kid, I thought that was all. Why didn't it work?!" The turkey that the kid previously possessed didn't respond, making her eyes widen. She looked back and threw the turkey onto the ground, no longer finding any use in it.
Where did the kid go? She asked herself.
The Gumbus followed, using its chains to try to capture them, but they all managed to slip out of their chains and continue running down the aisle.
"Where's the exit?!" Michelangelo wails as the Gumbus starts throwing items off the shelves towards them.
April found a shopping cart and forced Leonardo inside. (Y/N) ran along with her, blocking off all items their way.
"Incoming, Mikey!" Leonardo called out once the shopping cart bumped into the younger turtle, which made Michelangelo retract into his shell and Leonardo catching him before he came back out and they hugged each other.
The Gumbus let out another loud roar, using its powers to lift up two shelves and block the aisle.
"He's gonna block us in!" Leonardo pointed out.
"I got this!" (Y/N) spoke up, picking up the speed. She put her hands up in front of her, punching her way through the shelves and giving the others an exit.
Everyone fell. (Y/N) put her arms out for both turtles who were rolling toward her and she caught them. Leonardo held his younger brother's shell close before his head popped out along with his limbs, hugging both Leonardo and (Y/N). Of course, both brothers were shaking and didn't let the (H/C) haired girl go.
"Look guys, it'll be fine!" April assured as she pulled (Y/N) away from the brothers, which annoyed them. "You know how these things go. As long as we stick together and don't split up, we'll be okay!"
April smiled, holding (Y/N) close. Both women jumped a bit as they heard a shift in the shelves. And before they knew it, the shelves rotated and split them all up.
Both (Y/N) and April heard the turtles scream at the other side (mostly Michelangelo).
"We need to help them!" April said, worried for her friends.
"I know, but this is a ghost we are talking about." (Y/N) retorted, her hands over her hips.
"We can still try." April smiled at her. "Right?"
"I guess." (Y/N) muttered, thinking for a moment before looking over at her friend. She sighed, giving her a nod. "Esta bien, let's go help our friends."
"Yes!" April cheered, hugging the young woman. "Let's go!"
(Y/N) jumped back a bit, having not expected the tight embrace her friend. She hugged her back, giving her a gentle pat in the back. April quickly pulled away and held the young woman's hand as they go walking around.
"While we're at this, I can give you advice for when you fight in the future."
"You mean when your vacation is over?"
"Yeah.."
April stayed quiet for a moment, and her friend managed to sense a feeling of anxiousness. (Y/N) narrowed her eyes at April, knowing something was off.
"Are you okay?" She asked.
"I was thinking." April mumbled, playing a bit with her fingers, avoiding eye contact with the (H/C) haired girl. "There will be a dance at my school and Taylor Martin invited me to sit at the cool kids table." She took a deep breath, facing (Y/N). "And I was thinking if you'd like to be my plus one."
"Sure." (Y/N) nods.
"Really?" April asked a bit surprised.
"I mean, you have helped me so much with my job ever since I've hired you and caught quite a few criminals in the process." (Y/N) explained with a small smile. "So, I suppose I could repay you by going to this event with you."
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" April hugged the girl once more, catching her off guard, but eventually hugged her back.
"It's nothing, my friend."
❦
"APRIL O'NIEL!"
The so-called ghost turned out to be a robot, and April had thrown a piece of bread towards it to tear its attention away from both turtles who were terrified. And yes, both women stood on top of a shelf.
(Y/N) had helped April create a weapon, more specifically a bow and arrow, out of objects around them. In this case, food and a wooden roller.
"Aim." (Y/N) guides the girl, standing behind her with her hands over the girls arms to help with aim. April slowly aimed above the robot, finding the thin string reflecting from the light.
April smirked once she found the weak spot, aiming the salami at it. "You're gonna wish you were a ghost, Gumbus!"
"Shoot." (Y/N) ordered, watching the robot roar as it lifting its chains into the air and two shelves.
"Salami!" April hollered, shooting the salami strain into the string and snapping it.
The robot immediately fell onto the ground. Everyone stared at it since it didn't move. Then—
BOOM!
The robot blew up, its limbs flying far. April and (Y/N) both jump down from where they stood, running over to both turtle brothers, wanting to make sure they were alright. When Leonardo set eyes on (Y/N), his eyes immediately lit up and ran over to her, pulling g the girl into a tight embrace.
Everyone jumped back when the robot burst open, with Baxter being shot out of it with his seat. "Ow!"
"What?! You?" Michelangelo gasped in disbelief, but also felt a bit betrayed since he looked up to this kid. (Y/N) felt a bit disappointed in the kid, walking over to him and checking for any injuries on the kid, making sure he was okay.
"Duh." Leonardo scoffed. "He's literally 100% of the people who we know from this place!" He glanced down, finding the kid's phone on the ground. His eyes widened as he bent down to pick it up. "What's this?" The kid panicked as Leonardo searched through the phone. "Ugh, you were recording the whole time, weren't you?!"
The kid furrowed his eyes, growing annoyed. "I had to! Because of cheapskates like you! Who watch my videos, but never subscribe and donate!"
"What?" April stared at him shocked. "So you did all of this for money?"
Baxter sighed, watching (Y/N) pull out a colorful bandaid from the pocket of her onesie, placing it over a small cut on his arm. "Look, this is my parent's store. They don't even pay me to work here! But there's big bucks in hoaxes."
"Looks like you're done, hoss." Michelangelo placed his hands over his hips. "We'll be taking the footage with us."
"What?!" Baxter questioned. He grumbled, glaring at them. "You'll pay for this. You will rue the day you crossed young man genius Baxter Stockboy!"
"--Wait a minute." April cut him off, holding in her laughter. "Your name is Stockboy, and you're a Stockboy?"
Everyone, except for (Y/N), burst into laughter at the poor kid. Baxter fumed, having finally snapped. "I'll teach you to laugh at me!"
Baxter cackled and pressed a button on his chair, raising some shelves facing their direction. Everyone got into a defensive position, ready for battle. "Now you will feel the wrath of--"
"Baxter, are you in there?! You were supposed to be home an hour ago." A woman's voice echoed throughout the store. She turned the lights on from one side. "What happened to the store?!"
"Oh no, guys!" Baxter panicked. "It's my parents!" He turned to everyone else who was gone, except for Leonardo and (Y/N). The kid only panicked more.
Leonardo chewed on some salami that he was previously using as a weapon. He had a cocky smirk on his face as he climbed inside the vent. "Tell us if you got grounded in your next video, okay?"
"Be sure to subscribe and donate?" Baxter asked, watching (Y/N) hesitating to go up the vent. She turned around to look at the kid who seemed both nervous and sad. She sighed, walking over to him.
"Here, let me help you." (Y/N) mumbled, helping the kid get out the seat. "I have a plan, so I want you to play along." She narrowed her eyes at him. "Don't make me regret this, kid."
Baxter nodded, deciding not to fight this woman. Also because he finds her somewhat scary. He let her pick him up. The parents came over and saw their son was safe and with a woman they didn't know. And who was wearing a onesie on top of that, which (Y/N) found embarrassing.
(Y/N) had to lie to them, telling them there was a criminal in there store who had escaped, so she protected their son. At first the parents didn't believe her until she showed them her bounty hunter license, which she always has to carry around for any purpose.
Did she feel bad for lying? Yes. These people were so kind to her and made her feel warm and fuzzy inside, which she wasn't used to. Especially the mother who insisted she'd come over for dinner.
"Are you sure?" (Y/N) asked. "I don't want to waste--"
"Please accept." Baxter's father smiled softly, coming off as a gently soul for (Y/N). "It's the least we could do for saving our son."
(Y/N) sighed and reluctantly agreed. Both parents cheered happily and led her to their home. Baxter looked over to (Y/N) as he was carried by his mother, sending her an appreciative smile towards her. (Y/N) returned the smile somewhat.
The mother set him down on the ground and Baxter immediately went towards (Y/N), holding her hand. Her eyes widened slightly. She sighed and picked him up, letting the kid sit over her shoulders. Both Baxter's parents glance over at them before smiling at each other.
If they had been strangers, one would think these two were siblings.
Cute.
