chapter forty eight. malignant. now i'm god.
chicago med / pd crossover event.

"How is she?" Jay asks, referring to the woman firehouse 51 brought in when they were called to a fire, as he and Kelly walk into med and over to Sharon Goodwin, Chief of services at chicago med.

"The same. It turns out, she was on chemo" Sharon says, "What do you guys know about her?"

Jay sighs and says, "Not a lot right now"

"That's all that was salvaged from the scene" Kelly says, as Jay hands Sharon the evidence bag full of the victim's things.

"It's her personal belongings. Couple of books, receipts. We processed them. Didn't find anything useful"

"Hey, Daniel. Why don't you take a look at this" Sharon says to Dr. Charles, who was only a few feet away at the nurses station.

"You never know what you might find" Dr Charles says, opening the bag and taking the receipts out, "A lot of receipts. Organized. Getting ready for tax season"

Maxine then walks over to them from getting off the phone and says, "Guys, forensics just came in. They only found her prints at the scene. There's no signs of foul play. All the evidence is pointing to suicide"

Dr. Charles looks at an online ticket the victim had purchased as Jay walks over to his brother and says, "Can I ask you a doctor question?"

"Sure, walk with me" Will says, as they start walking down the hall.

"It's about Herrmann. If he'd come in on your watch, would you have waited so long before doing anything?"

"That's a tough call. It's been awhile since my surgical residency. And I wasn't there for the exam, so it's hard to say"

"Yeah. Just in general"

"In general? Yeah, I probably would have gone in" will says, then looks at Penelope who walks by, "But again I wasn't there"

"Yeah, thanks" Jay says, then smiles because of his brother's infatuation with his co-worker.

"Don't..."

~~~
Maxine walks into the waiting room, where firehouse 51 was waiting to see how Herrmann was doing, who had just been stabbed at Mollys. She walks over to her sister, who's knee was moving uncontrollably and she sits next to her. "Hey, how's Herrmann?"
Honey sighs, "he's not doing good right now"
Maxine puts her arm around her, "he's gonna make it. He's a tough as they come"
~~~

"Sorry to ask you this, but Dr. Charles, he's on a thing about that attempted suicide. He's not buying it" Will says.

"What's not to buy? You heard the report. There's no signs of foul play" Jay says.

"I know. But could you just take one more look? Turn over a few rocks"

"Oh, come on"

"Alright, how about a pound of smoked trout from Calumet?"

"Alright, two and you got a deal" Jay says, giving his brother a hand shake.

"My man"

"Shut up"

"You're my hero"

~~~
Jay and Maxine walk back into Med and over to Will who was at the nurses station and says, "Max and I turned over some rocks on the Jessica Pope case like you asked me to"
"And?"
"I had the documents lab restore some papers from her place. And they found this?" Jay says, handing Will an envelope. Will reads it over then says, "Thank you"
Will then walks away to find Dr Charles over on the other end of the nurses station. "Dr. Charles" Will says, handing him the note. Dr. Charles looks at it and says, "suicide note"
"Yeah, but it wasn't because she was sick"
"'My fault because I trusted him. I'm a fool. I can't live with this betrayal'"
"Maybe a lover?"
"Is this the whole thing?"
"That's all they could restore"
Dr Severide walks past the two and asks, "what's going on?"
"Jessica Pope. Suicide after all" Dr Charles says.
"Really? Because I just got back some very weird test results. They confirm she's dying from an overdose of chemo"
"What's weird about that?" Will asks.
"The results also show that she never had cancer"
πŸͺ©πŸͺ©πŸͺ©
Maxine walks down the stairs to the lobby and looks at Platt, who points to the office. Max looks into the room to see a brunette woman sitting on the edge of the windowsill and raises an eyebrow, never seeing this woman before.
Maxine walks into the room and says, "Can I help you?"
"Maxine Bishop?"
"Yeah"
"I'm Michelle Connors. Mavericks wife"
Maxine sighs, "oh boy" then she closes the door and sits down, "what do you want?"
"You're gonna stay away from my husband, got it? I don't know who you think you are, trying to weasel your way into our marriage but it's gonna stop...today"
"We'll, I heard thatβ€”"
Michelle cuts the detective off, "I'm still talking. If you go near Maverick again, I swear to you, you will regret it. He's mine."
As silence lurked between them, Maxine raises an eyebrow, "you done now? Is it my turn to talk?" She asks, standing up and walking towards the woman, "first of all, you come into my district, threaten me? I don't think so. You ever come at me again, or Maverick. I'll make you regret it. You don't know who I am and trust me, you don't want to find out"
Michelle scoffs and goes to open the door to leave, passing by Adam, who looks at her strangely then looks over at his best friend. "Who was that?"
Maxine puts her hand on the palm scanner and says, "mavericks wife"
"His what?"
"Don't make me repeat myself, A" then she opens the caged door and walks up to the unit. Adam stood there stunned and takes out his phone.
πŸͺ©πŸͺ©πŸͺ©
The intelligence team is in a conference room at Med after being called in by Sharon, who said they've had three cases in which three women overdosed on chemo but were cancer free.
"Jessica Pope, Carol Shepperd, Dani Frank" Hank says, standing in front of the white board, "Each brought independently to Med with no connection between them, except an overdose of chemo for a cancer they don't have. I wanna know who proscribed that stuff"
"51 said that the gas explosion in Jessica's apartment caused a flashover, so there is nothing left but char" Adam says, sitting back in his chair, "there's no phone, no laptop, no datebook, nothing"
"No doctor's name" al says.
"We talked to Dani Frank's girlfriend" Erin says, "they hadn't been dating that long. She didn't know Dani's doctor, but she did say that Dani was doing better until she took a turn, and when she confronted her doctor about it, he put her on an experimental protocol that was supposed to beat it"
Penelope Severide walks into the conference room and says, "Sorry to interrupt. A new patient just rolled into the ED. Unconscious, pancytopenic, just like the others. Look, I don't know if this is legal, but right now, I really don't care" then she places the new victims purse onto the table, "That's her stuff. Have at it"
"Thank you" Erin says, taking her purse and dumping the contents onto the wooden table. Dawson grabs her wallet to look at the ID and says, "Alright, Leah Kamen, 42, lives in Edgewater.."
"She's a shift manager at a telemarketing firm"
"Insurance card. I'll call the company see if they got the name of the doctor who submitted the claim"
Hank nods his head then turns to the doctor and asks, "Hey, is there any way to trace the chemicals in their system back to a specific manufacturer?"
"A mass spectrometry test was performed on Jessica. We can order the same tests for the others. There's only a few manufacturers" Penelope states.
"Will you do it please?"
"Yep"
"Thanks" Hank says, before Penelope walks away. Kevin looks through the patients phone then says, "Leah has Dani Frank, Carol Shepperd and Jessica Pope as contacts on her phone"
"All our victims knew each other" Maxine says.
"Yeah, looks like it"
"Great, thanks" Antonio says, getting off the phone, "I got a name. Dr. Dean Reybold"
Maxine's heart stops at the name. It can't be the same doctor that treated Camille for cancer, could it? Max then looks at Erin, then they both look at Hank who just stood there. And everyone looks at the tension that that name just brought.
Voight walks away and Maxine and Erin go after him, followed by Al.
"Hank.." Erin says.
"Hey. al, what's going on?" Adam asks.
"Hank. Hank. Hey! You can't go" Erin says, catching Hank before he got onto the elevator.
"The hell I can't"
"If you show up, Reybold is gonna shut down. He doesn't know me. I can take Jay, and we will find out if he's the one overdosing these woman" Maxine states.
Erin looks at Olinsky and says, "Al.."
"We'll look into the new victim, then talk to Goodwin" Olinsky says, trying to convince Voight not to destroy the case before it even started, "Just you and me, alright?"
"Six years since I've heard that name Dean Reybold. Six years since..." Hank says, fighting the tears.
"I know" Erin says, while Maxine crosses her arms over each other, trying not to think about it.
"He was the last cancer doctor Camille went to. If he's the one doing this..."
"If he's the one doing this, we're gonna nail him" Maxine says sternly.
πŸͺ©πŸͺ©πŸͺ©
Dr. Dean Reybold walks into his office where Maxine and Jay are waiting and says, "I'm sorry to keep you waiting. Uh, my receptionist said you were here about Leah. Brave woman"
"That's right and Dani Frank, Jessica Pope, and Carol Shepperd as well" Jay says.
"Did something happen to them?"
"In the last 24 hours they've all shown up at chicago med flooded with chemo" Max informs him, "Dani's dead, and the other three are in comas"
Reybold, sighs then clears his throat before sitting at his desk then says, "Well, they teach you a lot about the body in medical school, but what they don't spend enough time on is teaching you how to deal with loss. You get attached to your patients. They're fighters, and you fight with them, but with oncology, you rarely win"
"So, you treated all of them?" Jay asks.
"I did. I am"
"When was the last time you met with these women?" Max asks, sitting down in front of the doctor.
"I would have to check their files"
"Do you mind if we take a look at those files?" Jay asks.
"I don't, but the state does. I can't give them to you unless you have a warrant, but the moment you do, they're yours. I will hand them over personally"
"Why don't we drop the whole 'I'm a fighter for the patients' act, alright? We know you mistreat your patients and we know you did something to these four women" Max says. Reybold looks confused then says, "Yes, I helped them"
"By poisoning them?"
"That's what chemotherapy is, detective. You poison cancer cells. If you don't understand the most..." Max cuts the doctor off and says. "I know exactly what you did"
"You know what?" Jay interrupts, helping Max stand up from the seat so she doesn't say anything else, "We're gonna be back with a warrant. Thank you"
"You know, I'm happy to help in any way I can" Reybold says, as the two detectives leave.
πŸͺ©πŸͺ©πŸͺ©
"We'll need documents, invoices. If the doctor ordered medicine overseas, the source country. Every piece of evidence counts" ASA Dana Shelby says, standing in front of the whiteboard on the Intelligence unit, "I need proof that Reybold acted with criminal intent. I need evidence he knew his actions could result in harm, but he acted anyway. Until you have that, no arrests. Is that clear?"
"Let's do it" Hank says. Al gets up from his desk and puts a hand on Maxine's shoulder, who's facial expression hasn't moved from anger since they had gotten back to the district, "come on, kid"
πŸͺ©πŸͺ©πŸͺ©
The Intelligence team walks into the building where Dr Reybold's office is and they continue up the stairs and down the hall. "Atwater, Antonio" Hank says, pointing to the room they just passed.
Antonio and Kevin walk into the room then they hear what seemed to be a paper shredder in another room and they open the door to see a woman shredding papers.
"Chicago PD!" Kevin says, as they walk into the room, "Ma'am, step away from the shredder. I need you to step away from the shredder" then he moves her himself when she doesn't listen.
Antonio takes out his walkie and says, "Sergeant, we're holding one here shredding documents"
Maxine and Jay walk down the hall and into a room where Reybold is having a meeting with his lawyers. "Sergeant!" Max calls out.
"Where's the warrant" Attorney Green says, as Jay unfolds the paper and hands it to her, "So you came here with a hastily written and narrowly defined search warrant to what? Upset my clients' patients?"
"Your client has been diagnosing patients with cancer; they don't have to fleece them with treatments they don't need. I'd say he's the one upsetting them." Max states.
"This is absurd. I have the highest cure rate in the midwest. My patients are every..." Reybold trails off when he sees Hank, Erin and Al walk into the room.
"Dr. Reybold. Shredding client files?" Hank says.
"I have nothing to hide, Hank"
"You two know each other?" Attorney Green asks.
"I treated Sergeant Voight's late wife"
"Don't say another word"
"You know who doesn't shred files? Innocent people" Hank says, walking closer to Reybold.
"Hank, you know me. I held your wife's hand when she..."
"Dr. Reybold" Green warns her client.
"Camille's death was hard on me, too"
Hank walks around Erin to get closer to Reybold and says, "Don't you say her name, you hear me?"
"She was such a fighter. She would not want you to do this"
"You're under arrest" Voight says.
"Hank" Erin says.
"On what grounds?" Green asks.
"Obstruction of justice. You can pick him up at the 21st" Hank says then turns to Jay, "Cuff him"
πŸͺ©πŸͺ©πŸͺ©
Maverick pulls into his spot at his club and sighs when he sees her, and he decides whether he should just drive away or not. He gets out and asks, "what are you doing here?"
She shrugs, "came to see you"
"Why?"
"I missed you"
Maverick rolls his eyes and locks his car and starts to walk away.
"What, I can't miss you?" She asks, trailing behind him like some lost puppy. Maverick turns around, anger in his eyes, "no, you can't. You cheated on me. You made my life miserable. Not anymore" then he turns to walk away.
"You're little girlfriends cute, you know"
Maverick stopped and raced towards his ex, "how do you know about her"
"Went to go see her, wanted to see who you're next side bitch was"
Maverick squints his eyes, now he was pissed, "you ever threaten me, or Maxine. You will regret it, got it?"
Michelle smirks, "that's exactly what she said"
"Don't push it, Michelle" he said before walking away.
πŸͺ©πŸͺ©πŸͺ©
After getting a call from Dana Shelby that she had made a deal with Reybolds attorney, Hank and Maxine walk into the courthouse to see said ASA and Hank says, "Hey. you made a deal? What kind of deal?"
"It's a year's license suspension..."
"Are you kidding me?"
"Five years probation, 14 million dollars restitution"
"No jail time?" Maxine questions, angrily.
"You guys think these women want to get dragged through a trial?"
"I think those women want justice. I do!" Hank shouts.
"If he loses, he could appeal for years. How many of them have that kind of time?"
"He didn't just defraud people, Dana. He murdered them"
"But we can't prove it. The judge advised us to take this based on the evidence. State's attorney agreed. Until you get me new evidence, my hands are tied"
Max scoffs and says, "Unbelievable" then she and Hank walk away.
πŸͺ©πŸͺ©πŸͺ©
Hank and Maxine walk down the hall at Med to see Dr Charles and Hank says, "Hey. We need your help"
~~~

"Well, at first blush, clinically, classic psychopath. Prey on the weak" Dr Charles says, leaning on his desk, while Hank and Max stand in front of him, hands stuffed in their pockets, "All these women are marginalized by age or race, and physically or emotionally removed from any support"

"Well, we know from phone records, four of these women knew each other, and from there, we discovered they met in a chat room, compared notes. They agreed to meet with him and as best we can tell, confront him about his methods. So, my question is, how could he have managed to pull them in for more rounds if they were already skeptical?" Hank says.

"Cancer diagnosis has so much uncertainty. People are looking for a guide through the process, someone they can trust"

"A savior" Max says.

"Hmm" Dr Charles hums, "And if they walked away, what would they have? Psychopaths control their victims to get that charge they crave. Telling a healthy woman she has cancer, oh, there's a thrill. Probably where he started, right? He does that, doesn't get caught, so he escalates to the next stimulus. Treating her, becoming her champion. I wager heavily we look into this guy's past, there's mistreatment by women. So he's flipped it. 'I used to be subject. Now I'm god'"

"Would you be willing to testify to that?" Hank asks. Dr Charles scoffs then says, "In order to take the stand, you know, I've got to...I gotta get a fully formed diagnosis, right? Speak to him directly?"

"Well, he ain't pleading insanity and I promise you, his lawyers are not gonna let you anywhere near him"

Max leans on the cabinet behind her when there was a knock at the door and Dr Severide walks in, "Sorry. I just wanted to let you know that Jessica Pope didn't make it"

"Thank you" Dr Charles says.

"Yeah" Penelope says, before closing the door. Max sighs and says, "Damn"

"The thing about psychopaths, they love to hear themselves talk"

πŸͺ©πŸͺ©πŸͺ©

Maxine sits next to Erin at her desk, looking through some paperwork when Hank walks over to them and kisses Erin's head and sits down next to them. Erin sighs then says, "Hank, I miss Camille. I mean, my whole life till I was 14, it was Bunny, you know. When she was sober, when she wasn't. I didn't know moms could be kind or brave or unselfish. She didn't even like me when you first brought me home. You remember that?"

"Yeah" Hank laughs, along with Max and Erin.

"She already had her hands full with Justin, and then I showed up and just doubled her trouble. We were hellions. I remember this one day I came home, Iron maiden t shirt, short skirt up to here, you know, and she's just waiting for me in the living room. She has a dress from Marshall fields. She told me that you saw something in me that was worth sacrificing for, and so she would too. And she used her christmas money to buy me that dress"

"I remember one night, when Hank and I were on a sting, this is when I first got to gangs" Maxine says, "I was sitting passenger side and Camille called me and I was so confused. I looked over at Hank and he nodded his head, and you said Hank to never miss a call from her or it will be hell" she said, causing the sergeant to smile, "so I answered and she said, 'hey sweetheart. Why don't you come over for dinner when you and Hank get done with work. I got some leftovers waiting in the oven'. I said, 'I don't want to be an inconvenience' and she wouldn't have it. So I said, 'yes ma'am' and hung up. She had an amazing heart" Maxine wipes the tears from her eyes, then looks at Hank, "did she know?"

Hank nods, "I told her when I found out. And she loved you like you were her own"

"Know what?" Erin asks, raising an eyebrow.

Before either Hank or Max could answer, ASA Dana Shelby walks onto the unit, "I have an idea. Reybold met with our victims three weeks before they showed up dead or in comas. You have the accounts receivable for his office?"

"Here and here" Erin says, as she and Maxine hand her the files.

"The victims met with Reybold on december 10th and...there" Shelby says, grabbing a file, "December 11th, an order came into the office for chemo for each victim."

"How much?" Max asks.

"Twice as much as they got every other time before"

"On the 11th? Wait, cause in Reybolds schedule" Erin says, looking through the papers, "he has our victims getting treated on december 14th, the 16th and the 17th. And then he had another order for chemo placed on December 22nd for three times the usual amount. And he's got them all listed for appointments right after that"

"Wait. What was the last order?"

As they search through the papers, Maxine finds it and says, "January 2nd. That's right before they came into med, and it's seven times the usual amount"

"How did he get that past the insurance companies?" Shelby asks, "They'd never approve seven times the normal amount of chemo"

"Did he even bill it to insurance?" Hank asks. Erin searches through some more papers then says, "No. So his office ate the payments?"

"Or he paid for it himself. If you're gonna order enough chemo to kill someone, that could be murder"

"Is this enough?" Max asks.

"His signature on the invoices proves intent with physical evidence. Keeping it off the books is a cover up" Shelby says, "If i can get the women from the fraud case to testify he dosed them personally, I think we can convince a jury"

"That's all I need to know" Hank says.

πŸͺ©πŸͺ©πŸͺ©

Hank, Maxine and Erin walk into a banquet hall where Reybold was speaking at a fundraiser, where he had just received an award.

"No, it's connecting with our patients wholly and never giving up, making them believe that a full recovery is possible, too" Reybold says.

"Yeah, is that how it went with Jessica Pope?" Hank questions, "What about Dani Frank? Carol Shepperd?"

"Back up" Maxine tells a guard who was walking towards them.

"Leah Kamen? What about their healing? I guess they had a different treatment program, huh doc?" Hank says, walking onto the stage, "turn around" then he takes his cuffs out, "you're under arrest for the murder and attempted murders of four patients" then he walks Reybold out, followed by Erin and Max.

πŸͺ©πŸͺ©πŸͺ©

Maverick walks into the house to see his girlfriend walking down the stairs, dressed up in formal wear and his heart falls. "Hey"

"Hi" Max says, going to grab her coat.

"You look nice"

"Thanks. I'm heading to court"

"I miss you, princess"

Maxine looks over at the taller man and grabs his hand, "I miss you too, but I need more time. Until this situation with Michelle ends. I can't do this, not right now" then she kisses his cheek, "I love you so much, Mav" then she grabs her keys and leaves.

πŸͺ©πŸͺ©πŸͺ©

"In your review of Dr. Reynolds books, you found no evidence he billed any insurance companies for these treatments" ASA Shelby asks the witness on the stand in court.

"No" He says.

"Well, who did pay for these treatments?"

"Dr. Reybold himself from his personal account"

"Personal, which allowed him to overdose patients..."

"Objection" Reynolds' attorney says.

"Over ruled" the judge said.

"To overdose patients without raising a red flag with the insurance companies"

"Yes"

"No further questions" Shelby says, walking back to her seat.

Attorney Green stands up from her seat and says, "Could Dr. Reybold have been helping patients get the care they needed? For instance, if three patients came to him and said they were having financial difficulties but wanted to stay alive, what kind of doctor might pay for those treatments himself?"

"A really remarkable one. That's for sure" the witness says.

"Thank you. That's all" Green says, going back to her seat.

"My conversation with Dr Reybold coupled with a look at his history led me to a clear diagnosis of psychopathy" Dr Charles says, now on the stand, "the psychopathic mind lacks fears, remorse, empathy. In essence, it can't connect to or care about others. That's Dr. Reybold"

"But he's a doctor" Shelby says, "Doesn't that suggest empathy or caring?"

"Well, you'd be shocked how many functional psychopaths are in the world, attracted to power, control, flaunting his success rates, the therapies only he can administer, belittling his patients to keep them under his control. 'I'm the one with the medical degree', he would say to his patients."

"You know this how?"

"Because he told me"

"I renew my objection" Green says, standing up, "This entire conversation.."

"Was a spontaneous admission that has already been ruled on" Shelby says.

"Agreed. Overruled. Continue, Ms. Shelby" The judge says.

"So, Dr. Reybold would ask his patients if they had a medical degree?"

"And make sure they knew he was the only one who could save them" Dr Charles states, "Those are actual words from our conversation"

"Thank you, Dr. Charles" shelby says, before returning to her seat. Attorney Green stands up then says, "Well, let's talk about that conversation. Was it at your office?"

Dr Charles shakes his head and says, "No"

"At the court, ordered by a judge?"

"No"

"Did Dr Reybold know he was being interviewed?"

"As I said before, it was not an interview. It was two doctors striking up a conversation"

"Where did this conversation take place?"

"In a coffee shop"

"Near your house?"

"No"

"Your office?"

"No"

"In fact, it was eight miles from either of those places"

"Didn't measure"

"Do you know how many coffee shops are between your house or office and there?"

"I don't"

"Thirty seven" Green says, going to get a piece of paper from her assistant, "thirty seven coffee shops and you rolled into this particular one two blocks from the defendants house to stalk him?"

"Objection" Shelby says.

"Sustained" The judge says.

"Were you paid by the prosecution for your services, Dr Charles?" Green asks.

"I was not" Daniel says.

"You're an unpaid agent of the police"

"No one told me to speak with Dr Reybold. I walked into that coffee shop, and I saw this doctor and my curiosity got the best of me"

"That works out well for the state, doesn't it?"

"With drawn" Shelby says.

"Ever socialize with members of the intelligence unit, Dr Charles perhaps at a bar called mollys?"

"I have"

"So, they're friends of yours?"

"My report on Dr Reybold is an unbiased..."

"That wasn't the question"

"I know them through work and would be very proud to call them my friends"

"No further questions"

After a quick recess, ASA Shelby puts Hank on the stand.

"All three victims were in contact with each other, comparing notes. We know this from their phone records. After their december 10th meeting with Dr Reybold, they agreed to an experimental treatment which, in actuality, was simply twice the usual dose of chemo. The following week, he upped it to three times the amount. By the time they wound up in the hospital, it was at seven times."

"Because they confronted him about what he did, and he was afraid of being exposed."

"Objection. Counsel is testifying" Green says.

"Sustained" the judge says.

"In your investigation, did you find it suspicious three patients met with the doctor one day..."

"Objection. No one knows what transpired in this meeting" Green states.

"That's being everyone in that meeting besides Dr Reybold is dead or in a coma"

"Your honor"

"One more time, and you're in contempt" the judge says. Shelby sighs and asks, "could the amounts the patients received have been lab mistakes?"

"No, Dr Reybolds signature was on every order" Voight says.

"Well, what about a dosing error?"

"His staffer testified that Dr Reybold personally administered those doses"

"But the staffer cut a deal"

"Doesn't mean it wasn't the truth"

"Objection. Improper opinion" Green says.

"Sustained" the judge says.

"What about any other witnesses who..." Shelby says

"Asked and Answered" Green says.

"Yes, Ms Shelby. Move on" the judge says.

"Your honor, someone has to speak for these victims" Shelby says.

"You don't speak, you ask questions. And if nobody else saw the doctor dosing..."

"Someone else did" Hank says, "Me. I saw Dr Reybold dose a patient. My wife. I saw Dr Reybold dose my wife, Camille, who died of cancer under Dr Reybolds care six years ago"

"Sergeant Voight.." Shelby says.

"I'm a witness. I saw him dose a patient"

"The state has no further questions for this witness"

"Well, I have a few" Green says, passing Shelby as she walks back to her seat, "Losing your wife to cancer must have been very painful, Sergeant. Can you talk about your wife's illness?"

Maxine then feels someone grab her hand and intertwine their fingers with hers and she looks up at Jay to see him focused on the trial.

"Camille was referred to Dr. Reybold when her ovarian cancer returned. He recommended an aggressive course, and then a second round when that didn't get it all. She was cold all the time, couldn't keep food down. Memory went in and out. She...she was depressed. She fought as hard as she could, but..."

"She sounds brave"

"She was"

Green sighs then says, "you're still in mourning over your wife's death. Isn't that what this is about?"

Voight shakes his head and says, "No"

"How gratifying would it be to help convict Dr Reybold"

"It would be very gratifying"

"No further questions"

"For all his victims"

"I said no further questions. You answered exactly as I expected you to"

"Redirect?" Shelby asks and the judge nods his head, "What other victims are you referring to, Sergeant Voight?"

"Objection!"

"Ms. Green questioned my witness about one prior patient, Camille Voight. Now she opened the door to the other 42 patients he treated"

"She's right. Overruled" The judge says and Green sighs.

"What other victims?"

"Helen Graham, Nia Felten, Priya Parvati, Anne Gamerman, and 38 other people the doctor diagnosed with cancer they didn't have and treated with chemo they didn't need" Hank says.

"How do you know this to be true?"

"Because he said so himself in court under oath"

"Objection!" Green shouts.

"Over ruled" The judge says, "Continue"

"Dr Reybold confessed to personally poisoning 42 patients, ruining their lives, terrifying them and their families, and he did it all for a payout. And he admitted to all of this as part of a deal he made with the state of Illinois, copping to fraud"

Shelby grabs a paper from her desk to show Hank and says, "this deal, Sergeant Voight"

"That's the one"

"The state would like to enter into evidence case number 111-496" shelby says, handing the judge the documents then handing one to attorney green, "and amend it's witness list by 42 people"

Erin puts her arm around Maxine and brings her into a side hug.

Erin and Max walk into Dana Shelby's office to find Voight sitting on the edge of her desk and Maxine says, "They have a verdict"

"Hour deliberation. That's probably good, right?" Hank asks. Erin smiles then says, "Camille would be proud of you"

"She would be proud of you guys, too"

"On the count of narcotic induced homicide of Danielle Frank..." the judge says. Maxine grabs Hank's hand and squeezes.

One of the jury members stands up and says, "We find the defendant guilty."

"On the count of narcotic induced attempted homicide of Carol Shepperd..."

"We find the defendant, guilty"

"On the count of narcotic induced attempted homicide of Leah Kamen..."

"We find the defendant, guilty"

"Defendant is remanded into custody until such a sentencing hearing is scheduled." the judge says, then slams his gavel, "Bailiff"

Reybold turns around to face Hank, pointing a finger towards him and says, "Hank, your wife did not suffer needlessly. You have to believe me. The cancer did come back. I never harmed Camille. These patients, I was their only hope. They got years because of me. You can't put someone away for saving lives. You can't"

As the bailiff cuffs Reybold to take him away he continues his rant, "I wasn't harming them. I was helping them. Helping!"

Erin places her hand on top of Hanks, while Max hooks her arm with his.
