54 a letter to burn

After going for a well needed run with Milo, we head back to the pack house. I expect to find Reign in our bedroom but she's nowhere to be seen. I shower and get changed into clean clothes before scouting the house for her, only to find her in our new and improved office.

Her eyes are trained on the desk, a piece of paper with a pen in her hand. I raise my knuckles to knock on the open door. I watch as her crystal blue eyes snap up to mine and she smiles, the corners of her eyes crinkling a little.

"Hi," she breathes out before pressing the pen down to the desk. "How was your run?"

"Overdue," I stroll into the office, shutting the door behind me. "And needed but it was fun. It's our turn next."

Reign flexes a brow. "To race you? I don't think so."

A heavy laugh rumbles from my chest as I inch closer to the desk, perching myself on the corner. I glance down at the piece of paper that she was just writing on, I can't see the words but I twist my head.

"What are you writing?"

She exhales a long sigh. Telling me that she's either up to no good or she's exhausted her mind with too much thinking. It's probably both but I wait patiently anyway. "A letter."

I hum and press my hand to my chin. "I can see that."

When she drags her eyes up at me, she covers the words with her little hand. "I don't want you to think I'm going crazy or something."

"I'd never think that," I shake my head. "Whatever it is, you can tell me. I'd never judge you."

Reign huffs out a sigh and pushes back into the chair. "Fine," she nods and pokes her tongue into the bottom of her lip. "I started writing a letter to my parents and my brother."

I stay silent for a few moments, studying her. When I don't respond immediately her cautious eyes find mine and she winces. "See you're worried about me now," she grumbles before covering her face with her hands.

"I'm not worried about you, Reign," I tell her seriously. "You can do whatever you want to do. I'd never stop that. I'm just thinking where has this come from, wanting to write a letter to them. Have you been feeling a certain type of way recently?"

She chews on her lips and lowers her gaze again, reading over her words. "I wasn't even going to send it. I just wanted to put my words down on a piece of paper. That way I really know how I'm feeling."

I nod. "Right. Okay. Then what's been going on?"

"Jenna said that to find closure I should write a letter, she didn't say that I should send it or I should go and hunt them down. But sometimes a letter addressing how I feel, without asking any questions can help to calm my mind, bring me closure that I will never receive because I don't ever want to see them again." Reign takes a large breath after racing through her words.

My arms cross over my chest and she drags the paper closer to her. "What were you going to include in the letter?"

Reign stares up at me. "That I found you," she says, focusing on my eyes. "That I fell in love, that I stumbled into this life. A life that they never would have been able to give me. That I'm happy for the first time in my life. That this is what a family is, that being blood related to someone means absolutely nothing. Family is us, family is this pack and I'm glad I am away from them because this is everything I have ever dreamt of."

The thumping in my chest increases, blood roars through my veins at her words. I study her face and watch as her expression flows into softness. Happiness that I have brought her, happiness that she has found within herself.

"Angel," I lean over and cup her face, tilting her chin towards me. "Finding you wasn't by mistake, finding you was my destiny. I would have gone to the ends of this earth to find you, to bring you home to the only family that will ever matter."

Reign relaxes into my touch and clutches my hand with hers, warmth spreading between our bodies. "I really, really love you, Everett."

My chest constricts, fluttering away like a goddamn butterfly convention. I tilt my head and flick my thumb across the edge of her jaw. I focus back on those eyes of light. "I know you do, angel," I lower my voice. "I love you more."

She shakes her head. "No you don't," she whispers. "We love each other equally."

I feel my lips beginning to curl. "You're right, this isn't a competition. This is life."

"A life of love and care and trust in equal amounts," she flashes me a smile and I go weak at the knees, even perched on the desk.

I can't take my eyes off her because she's beauty and she's stars and she's everything. "If you wanted to send that letter, I'd completely support your decision. Whatever you need to get that closure."

Reign pulls away from my grasp and looks down. "I don't want to send it. I don't want to give them that satisfaction of knowing I even think about them. But after this I want to write it and I want to burn it. And never think of them again, why should I when I can focus on what's right in front of me?"

My eyes float down to her lips and I resist the urge to kiss the life out of her when she's going through something personal to herself. But I can't help but feel so much pride and happiness for the way things have turned out between us, our relationship.

"Whatever you want, angel." I say again. "I'll be right here with you."

When she smiles this time I can't help myself, I stand from the desk and walk around to face her. I hold out my hand and she takes it delicately, rising from the chair. One hand slides against her cheek and into the back of her golden locks, the other tilts her chin so I can claim those delicious lips.

She smiles instantly when our mouths touch. It's a soft kiss–nothing more. But having her like this, having her in this moment proves to me that waiting for twenty-eight years was worth every second of having her here with me now.

I reach down under her ass and pull her legs around my waist, she clings to me like a koala as I walk us towards the new plush sofas that Reign wanted to order. They're bright green and remind me of her.

Once my leg brushes the edge I lower us down to it and she wraps her arms around my neck tightly, pecking my lips over and over until we're both releasing a small chuckle.

When our lips part, she climbs into my lap and brushes her fingers through my hair. I study her eyes as she watches the action of her hand. "You know I hated it when you called me Lily."

"I know you did," I laugh again. "I hated it too. It felt off and wrong. I called it from the start."

Her eyes dart to mind. "You didn't."

"I did," I nod with a smirk. "You never responded to Lily and I remember the first time I said your real name, it was like fireworks had been set off inside your body. I remember how you blushed, how your breathing hitched even a tiny bit."

Reign scowls at me. "Did not."

I lean forward and peck her chin softly. "It's okay to admit it, angel. Pretty sure I almost came in my pants when you said my name for the first time. And that took a while."

She releases her neck and laughs loudly, it echoes off the wall. The sound brings me so much needed joy, my wolf purrs at the sound. It always sends a shiver down my spine. "Wow," she exhales after a moment. "Now that is something."

My eyes glance at her neck, the mark I gave her a few months back now glows in my direction at her radiance. I lean forward and kiss it, Reign's throat clenches when I do.

"That feels good," she murmurs.

"You always say that."

"Because it's true."

I kiss her again and smirk into her skin. "Sometimes I can't believe you're all mine."

"Sometimes I can't believe I'm your Luna."

Our eyes find each other like magnets and I try not to frown at her response. "Why?"

She shrugs and moves her forehead towards mine, the tips of our heads brush and she inhales slowly. "Guess I never really saw myself as a leader in that sense, it's been hard to adjust but I think I'm doing okay. That's only because of your guidance and patience with me."

I stare at her for a couple of seconds, she pulls back and tilts her head. "Do you know what Reign means?"

She nods slowly. "I do."

"Then you'll know that it is fit for a Luna like you, practically our Queen. A born ruler."

A deep shade of pink invades her cheeks and she buries her head into my chest, her breath tickling my neck but it brings me so much comfort. "I'm only starting to feel like that."

My hand slides up her back in long soothing motions. "And you have a lifetime to believe it yourself," I whisper into her ear.

She clutches onto me tighter and inhales my scent deeply. "Who knows what the Moon Goddess was smoking when she decided that I would be a fit match for someone as kind as you."

I laugh and my chest vibrates through hers. "Likewise, angel. Likewise."

Kassian and Cleo join us for dinner this evening. Reign helped me cook and we drank a bottle of wine in that time but it's our night off as the Alpha and Luna, I think we deserve to celebrate sometimes.

When they arrive at the house we greet them warmly, Cleo is already fussing over Reign and I adore their friendship that has grown over the last few months. She isn't just my friend anymore, she's our friend.

Reign helps me plate up the food and we drink more wine over dinner.

"So," Cleo says as she covers her mouth to swallow. "We have some news about the wedding."

I watch as Reign's eyes light up and she stares down at the massive diamond on Cleo's finger. Kassian's hand gently rubs her back as she flicks her eyes between us.

"We've decided to have the wedding this summer," she grins and then turns to her mate. "We want to have it up in the mountains, away from here and where we know it's beautiful and peaceful."

"That sounds great guys," I say enthusiastically.

Kassian nods. "We found the most perfect venue, it overlooks all the mountains and has the most amazing view. It's honestly breathtaking."

"I'm so excited for you guys," Reign grins as she places her knife and fork together in the centre of her plate.

"Me too," Cleo replicates Reign's smile.

I turn to Kassian with a nudge. "I can't believe it's finally happening."

"About time too," he says. "Life's been far too busy but glad that we finally got the chance to have a look and make it super special."

My eyes take a quick glance at Reign as she laughs away with Cleo, she clutches her wrist and then shows her something on her phone.

"Everything worked out just how we wanted it, huh?" I say with gleaming eyes.

Kassian nods in agreement. "Sure did. Proud of us, brother." He raises his glass and clinks it against mine.

We both take a sip. "How's life with your Luna?" He asks curiously.

I nod. "Really good. Reign has settled in well. She's started training the pack in archery, she's getting better with her confidence but soon she's going to flourish and she'll forget that she ever used to be nervous. She's been great, better than great. She's been phenomenal with the pack."

Kassian flashes me a grin. "I'm so pleased for you. I'm pleased for both of you. I know it's been tough but it's always worth it in the end."

"Too right."

My eyes flick to Reign again, she's still wearing that beautiful smile. She tucks a piece of hair behind her back as she gossips with Cleo. After a few moments she glances my way, she watches me stare at her.

Then she continues to smile and I can't help but glow with rich content. I suck in a breath because I will fall off this chair from looking at her too much–I can barely handle it on the best of days but when she's beaming with blissfulness, I have to tell myself how damn lucky I am to have her here with me.
