IS SAID THAT WHEN YOU DIE, or before you pass that line, there is a moment which your brain lets you rewind your whole life.

that's what should have happened.

that's what would have happened, if only you didn't have some score to settle with your own life.

instead, you finally filled those empty spots.

ten years before

"ISN'T SHE SOMETHING" she clicked her tongue.

the leader of the ghosts was standing right in front of you, her skull mask covering her tilted head as she looked down at you.

you, little kid trembling against the restrains around your legs and wrists.

your tears fell from your eyes, rolling down your cheeks, and down over the tape covering your mouth.

you cry too much— that's what she had said as she had taped your lips shut.

the warrior she was speaking to was standing on her left, hands behind their back as they stared into nothing.

nobody dared to speak in her presence.

"five months here and you still won't budge" she scoffed, she tried to sound annoyed but there was an hint of pride in her tone "that blue blur must mean a lot to you" she commented.

your eyes twitched at his mention.

something in your heart stopped and then resumed with twice the energy.

that blue blur.

your blue blur.

you shook your head, trying to deny the obvious.

"no" she moved her hand up and you stilled "it wasn't a question"

you gulped at the way the light casted over her, the shadows made her look even more menacing and terrifying.

"five months and not a word, you know what that makes you?" this time you didn't move a muscle, staring back at her with as much courage as you could muster "useless. i should kill you, right now"

you did nothing.

you didn't blink the terrors away, you didn't gulp down the fear, you didn't had a twitch in your eyebrows.

you weren't afraid of dying, not anymore.

not if it meant that he could finally be safe.

she stepped back, she turned away.

she walked toward the exit, but before she passed through the door she tilted her head to look at you from over her shoulder "but you're far too interesting for that" her hand rose up to hit a big red button.

your eyes widened as you watched the metal table you were tied on starting to glow a bright white, the restrains burned against your skin and you started to wiggle around to free yourself from the pain.

from a speaker on a far corner of the room her voice come back once again, calling your name and making your eyes shoot up to stare at it.

and as she spoke again you finally understood what was happening, you finally understood what was the pain that you were experiencing.

"now it's your time to evolve"

***

"YOUR LEADER SPEAKS STRANGELY HIGHLY OF YOU" his snarky comment made a smirk appear over his own face.

your eyes rolled back as you focused on stretching your arms.

he kept speaking, confusion slipping trough his tone "i thought she despised you, i can not seem to find any other reason to send you here" his words made your eyes fall on the large mirror at the end of the room.

you were certain that she was there, on the other side, watching your every move with a glint of pride shining inside her pupils.

disgusting.

"i thought that too." you muttered angrily under your breath.

"knuckles, do me a favor" you turned back around to stare at the echidna, he was adjusting his gloves as he observed you.

"why would i—" he was interrupted by your next words.

"kill me if you can."

his eyes widened slightly, but he was quick to grab back his composure, he had never had anyone asking him something like that, and so casually.

for a moment, he thought about the option.

he wouldn't have to come to that stupid room everyday, he wouldn't have to stain himself with your blood everyday and maybe he would finally be given the chance to go out and do something more than just some stupid training with a useless ghost.

but that would mean being alone.

luckily, you both knew that he wouldn't succeeded on doing that.

not that he would ever admit it out loud.

"my father was very specific about his orders and, unlike you, i want to make him proud." he replied as he looked down at his hands, closing and opening his fists.

you scoffed as you started to run on your spot, your knees coming up under your chin as you kept on getting ready.

"at least try to hit me harder, i thought it would be easy for you, knuckles" you smirked as he growled, you could almost see steam coming out from his ears as he tilted his head.

"big talks for someone who hides behind their power" he bit back as he cracked his fingers, he took an attacking stance as his gaze locked with yours.

the corners of your mouth stretched even more, the words rolling off your tongue even if you knew that they would have ruined your day "small punches for an echidna warrior"

"i hate you" he shouted as he jumped forward, his fist coming up near his face before it landed against your right cheek.

that was how it always went.

you pushed him over his limits and with time he started to realize the reason why they had paired you two up.

he, who had always wanted to be the perfect warrior, following his father footsteps.

you, who would have done anything to go against the rules, even trying to kill your own self.

you both forced the other to not hold back, you both forced the other to face your limits and go forward.

what neither of you wanted to admit was that you were both utterly and completely alone.

that you despised everything and everyone, but that you two were the closest thing to a friend for the other.

still, you took his hits.

one, two, three, four, five.

five punches on your face, blood dripping from the side of your mouth while your head was pushed against the concrete.

he growled.

hot, angered breath against your cheek.

"fight" six, "back" seven.

hits which every time left dark and painful stains on your body, marks that were a reminder of the freedom you had lost.

you smirked, orange eyes glowing down at you.

eight, nine, ten.

hits which every time became stronger.

you laughed, a painful laugh as you coughed out even more blood.

"c'mon!" he shouted "be strong enough to save him!"

he didn't notice but, as your glare hardened at his words, you moved your fingers, slightly; and a spark appeared connecting your thumb and index.

eleven, twelve, thirt—

you grabbed his wrist, the orange lightings coming out form his fur flickered and glowed even more under the grip.

he looked down at your fingers wrapped tightly around his arm and he smirked back at you.

"that's what i want to see"

hits which healed faster.

the air tensed around you as the injuries covering you body started to disappear, the veins on your fingertips glowed under his gaze and the power covered your whole body.

eyes mimicking his, but with an hint of playfulness showing from under the now bright color of your iris.

iris which momentarily jumped to the mirror, where you knew they where watching, like they always did.

eyes back to knuckles, his rage mixing with the same energy as you, you showed him your teeth before you spoke.

"let's make this worth their while"

SEARCHING FOR SONIC PROVED TO BE CHALLENGING, a lot more then you had anticipated.

first of all you found yourself sleeping alone in the wild, after years of being with the little fox or trapped inside a small cell it took a tool on you being so vulnerable in the open.

then you were forced to survive against water, ice, fire, wind, sand, and all that earth threw at you.

also, you were injured.

and all you could think about was that yellow mobian, how you had left him alone, facing against a bad future.

guilt was eating you alive, from the inside out.

it didn't left room for much else, not for the pain on your body, not for the happiness of escaping, not for the hope of finding him.

not for the fear of being followed.

maybe that was wild their attack came by surprise, why you couldn't anticipate it like you were grown used too.

predictable— you had muttered as you had observed them from the window of your house, tails right behind you, waiting for you to tell him what to do next.

destiny loved to hunt you.

your word repeated in your head as they came out from the bushes, weapons in hand as they stared at you, circling you.

she came out, this time the fear and surprise weren't there to meet her.

you didn't feel those emotions anymore, not with her.

"thank you for bringing us to the real source of power" she did the same old game, starting to walk around you "after all this years... i knew i was right to keep you alive" she chuckled, it bounced in your ears.

they weren't there for you.

before you knew it she brought her hand up, motioning for her soldier to attack.

the thousands of bullets hit you precisely, blood spilling from your guts and staining the green grass under your feet.

"now..." she stepped forward.

your head fell down and you were forced to look at your feet.

green.

"now you're useless"

it was a dark green, but it reminded you of his eyes anyway, the way they used to lights up when he succeeded on scaring you, the way they reflected the light of the sun, the way his pupils grew when he looked inside yours.

they where there for him.

you breathed deeply, in and out, your fists tightened and your veins started to glow brightly under the rays of the moonlight.

the holes around your body healed in a blink, the bullets where pushed out of your body and they fell to the ground, in the puddle of your own blood.

you closed your eyes and you focused.

you could feel it in the air, her energy, her power.

and it was yours take.

she started to glow a bright purple, growling angrily at your actions.

her warriors attacked you, one after one, all together, it didn't mattered.

she had made you her prodigy, she had succeeded on making you her living machine of death, she had created a demon and she had gave it the power of a god.

the bodies laid on the once green grass, now stained with crimson.

she looked at the image in front of her, you could imagine it, the smirk on her face as she realized what was happening.

your hand around her neck "you should have killed me" you watched inside her eyes, looking at her soul leaving her body.

"i—i—" she struggled against your hold but you didn't budge "i won".

your fingers tightened.

you let her body fall between the others, an empty look on your face as you stared down at her.

your eyes flickered with purple: her power had always been yours to take.

one last phrase left your mouth before you could turn around and leave the past behind — or at least that's what you had thought —.

one last phrase filled with cockiness, a bit of softness, and some hope, a sharp contrast to the scene around you.

"but he's still alive"

***

you weren't given your moments of peacefulness before your death, not one.

but they all had a recurring theme in them.

sure, your power that for some — probably traumatic — reasons you had completely forgot about.

but also, him.

your alien, your hedgehog, your bestfriend.

your sonic.

you were reminded that every time you had been given the chance to step to the other side and leve all that darkness, all that pain, all that fear, behind... he had been the one to brought you back.

even if he wasn't always there.

thanks to him you kept on finding the strength to grab that string of life that was slowly slipping from your fingers and drag your soul back in its body.

and this time, this time it couldn't be much different.

no, this time again you were coming back.

you were coming back for him.

for him you bit and for him you just growled.

for him you killed and for him you spared.

for him you died and for him you came back.

all, all for him.
