𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗼'𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲

MADDIE WAS HOLDING A GUN IN HER HANDS, tails' gun to be precise.

and that was what made your brows furrow in confusion, that and the fact that she seemed ready to fight anything in her line of sight.

especially when she noticed you, covered in blood.

her eyes widened before she started to approach you, slowly, until she met your gaze, then she understood and she moved quickly at your side.

she went to grab your shoulders, but you didn't want her clean hands to be stained with the blood of your enemies.

so she moved back, looking into your pleading eyes.

she scanned your body up and down, searching for any injury, trying to see if you were hurt.

"not mine." you spoke easily, and after a beat of silence she nodded back.

"then let's go find them." not a hint of fear in her tone, even thought her look was telling a different story.

moments later you were looking inside every single room, opening doors, looking trough the little windows, body after body falling down.

you finally found the right one, maddie tried to open it but it needed a special key, you went back to one of the bodies and you searched inside the pockets.

when you finally found what you had been looking for it was pretty easy to burst inside.

she was the first to enter, and you heard a happy call of her name, you sighed quietly, waiting for the inevitable, before you followed behind her.

the way they called you was different, something slipping trough their tone, red covering you.

but when you looked up instead of meeting a scared gaze you found sonic's emerald eyes looking right into yours, he was smiling.

he was happy to see you.

"come on. we're busting out of here." spoke maddie.

you immediately ran to the hedgehog's cage, trying to find a way to unlock it, while maddie took care of her husband's restrains.

"should i ask how'd you get past the guards?" questioned donut lord as he glanced at your stained clothes.

he shared a glance with his wife.

"we always knew that she was into some crazy stuff." she explained while you find it difficult to open the metal cage.

you grew annoyed, growling under your breath, before you took out your gun to fire at the lock which fell to the ground with a 'thud'.

you repeated the actions for tails'cage.

"come on." "let's go." you and maddie spoke one over the other, trying to make the two boys move faster.

but as soon as the hedgehog was out of his cage he grabbed your face, squishing your cheeks and pecking your lips.

"you" he started as he looked right into your orbs, a confused look on your face "are amazing" he breathed out.

you felt the temperature of your body rising up at his words, you got lost into his fields of green, but that was before you realized that his white gloves were now reddish.

you stepped back, staring at his fingers in what seemed to be fear.

sonic noticed that, his eyes widening at your expression, he didn't move from his spot.

"it's okay, you saved me." he tried softly, trying to make you see what you had done, trying to make you see what he was seeing "you saved us." he motioned to the still unconscious body of the fox and that made you snap back to reality.

"we have to get him out of here" you spoke, making the blue mobian smile at your determination.

it took you less time to leave, probably because there weren't as many obstacles, and also because you finally knew the way to the exit.

when you finally arrived back to the spot of the wedding, you were happy to find the olive garden guy stuck to the ground.

you smirked as you noticed that he had something wrapped around his mouth, making it impossible for him to speak.

you helped tom lay tails against a tree, his eyes were still closed but he was alive, and that was enough for your hand to ghost over his cheek.

you wanted to held him close, kiss his forehead and lay your head over his chest to hear his heartbeat.

but that would have made his bright, sunny fur, turn into a dark, crimson red — the world would have had to burn down before that happened.

maddie, using her veterinary skills, tried to understand if there was anything she could do to help the fox wake up faster.

but she couldn't.

a noise that resembled an explosion made you quickly turn around, a large pillar of green light appeared.

"[name], sonic, what is that?" asked tom as you all stepped towards the sea.

"a big problem." explained the hedgehog as his hand found yours "the compass led robotnik to the emerald."

"that's got to be hundreds of miles away." maddie spoke behind you.

"all right. huddle up." started donut lord, him and his wife looked at each other with worry "let's figure out a plan. together." he moved his focus on you two mobians but you were already stepping back, away from them.

"no, we have to act now." you spoke.

"she's right, there's no time for that." sonic turned to look at you and your eyes widened in realization "i'm the only one that can get there fast enough."

you whipped around, shooking your head.

maddie called his name, trying to make him reason "this is way too big for you to do by yourself." she tried, but you knew that her words wouldn't have been enough.

"look at tails!" your hand motioned in the direction of the unconscious mobian "he crossed the universe just to warn me. and now he doesn't even look alive." you stepped forward, trying to block him from building those walls between you two "i need to do this, i need to do one good thing."

the blue mobian didn't have the guts to meet your gaze, knowing that it would be the one thing to make him crumble and easily accept your request.

but he couldn't let you risk your life like that.

"he looks up to you, you are his hero." you smiled softly, but it made a different expression cover his face.

"and what did his hero do? i practically got him killed." he pushed his eyes on donut lord "you know what? you were right. my moment came and i blew it."

a beat passed and his green orbs stared right into yours, again, but now it was raining on those green lands you had grown to love so dearly "i'm no hero."

you called his name, trying again to stop him from going alone.

"no." he silenced you, softly, and you didn't back down "i'm not letting anyone else get hurt because of me. i'm gonna fix this while i still can." before he dashed off you felt his lips on your for a mere second, a glimpse of what he was actually feeling.

and then he became a blue blur running towards the beachside.

donut lord called his name once again, but it was pointless, he had made his choice.

"sonic, wait!" you heard tail's small voice shout from behind you, he tried to fly to catch up with your blue friend but he failed.

he was far too injured to do so, he fell toward the ground and you quickly run at his side to make sure that he was fine.

"stop." you ordered, but he kept trying to push forward "don't move." you tried once again.

tom and maddie came up near you, crouching down to your height.

"take it easy, little guy." spoke donut lord — he wasn't more experienced then you with the paternal's tone — "you're hurt."

the yellow fox tried to grabbed your hands but you stepped back and he was left to rely on the other woman, his blue eyes looking straight into yours "but we have to help him." he moved his gaze towards the two humans "you don't know what he's up against."

you all took a second to glance back at the green light, your worried look increasing as you realized how far the situation had gone.

you let the wachowski's go threaten the commander — who was thankfully still tied up and unable to speak — as you inspected the fox's body.

your hands twitched at your side as you stopped yourself from feeling him under your fingertips, making sure that he was there with you.

"i'm good" he muttered, you blinked a couple times and he repeated himself "i don't remember much but i'm good"

you nodded, your eyebrows furrowing as you went back to analyzing every single spot on his body.

he grew uncomfortable under your gaze, something chewing up inside of him and begging to be let out.

he shuffled nervously as he looked around, avoiding you "especially, i don't remember you being..." you tilted your head up, trying to read him "covered in- in-"

"blood." you finished his phrase for him, stepping back to put more distance between the two of you, you were staining his soul, you could feel it in your bones.

"i-it's okay!" he tried to smile "i'm sure it's not yours" he tried to joke.

you huffed out, looking down at your hands.

"they tried to experiment on me, i don't even know what they were going to do with you two. i got some really strange memories back and, i- just-" you closed your fists, looking away from them and instead into his blue eyes.

he was there, in front of you, waiting for you to talk, to explain to him why it was fine that you were covered from head to toes in blood of enemies.

a hero saves everyone, even those who are not worth saving, especially them.

"there's no justification." you wanted him to understand that what you did was wrong "i acted without thinking, but i saved you. for me it's enough but it shouldn't be for you." you wanted him to be better then you, you wanted him to resemble the best of you.

and that was sonic.

he was the best, he was the good example, he was the hero that the world needed.

nothing mattered more then those two mobians, nothing made homocidal rages as necessary.

and you didn't want tails to grow up to be like you, sharp canines and terrific growls, weapon ready to fire at every given moment.

you wanted him to see the beauty in the world, to invent new things and help the others, to be the best version of himself.

"thank you" he whispered as he tried to hug you, your feet pushing you away before you could even think about it.

flash of your nightmares appeared right before your eyes, your worst thoughts became reality.

he didn't know what you were thinking, a soft smile growing on his face, "for saving me."

you sighed, trying to make yourself look stronger in front of the yellow fox, words running around inside your head.

you reciprocated the smile as steps approached the two of you, maddie and tom stopped at your side.

she laid a wet cloth over you head, trying to clean off the blood from your body, you grabbed it from her hand to finish the job as they spoke.

"you did good kid" praised you donut lord with a thumb up, his smile growing into an uncomfortable one under your silent gaze.

that was until the corner of your mouth turned upwards and you turned your head towards the ground to hide your expression.

"so, what now?" questioned tom as he looked around, the olive garden guy was now standing and he was dusting himself off.

you coughed in your fist, regaining back your composure before you spoke "me and red need to share a couple of words" you hinted a smirk.

you threw the — now mostly crimson — cloth on the ground, your hands coming to lay down on your hips.

"we will go back to green hills to shut down robotnik's lab, you two think you can handle that guy alone?" asked maddie as she too looked back to the older man who was still a little disorientated.

"of course!" jumped up the fox, only to stumble back on the ground.

immediately you reached to help him up, your mind finally letting you touch the pure yellow fur knowing that you could not stain it anymore.

"well, she can for sure" grimaced the yellow mobian.

you looked up at the two humans "we'll find a way, don't worry about us" they both knew your words actually translated too 'i'll protect my family until my last breath, trough good and bad."

they nodded back, putting their trust on you, they rushed back to the old man wearing his hawaiian shirt and you turned back to tails.

"any secret project that can take us to sonic in the next" you laid your eyes onto the green pillar standing on the horizon and then back onto the little fox "let's say, thirty minutes?" your arms crossed over your chest.

and as a smirk stretched on the fox' face you knew that it was going to be a lot better than you had anticipated "i might have an idea"
