AS SOON AS THE ZIP OPENED YOU WERE JUMPING OUT OF THE BAG, you tried to be as fast as you could, creating distance between you and the blue hedgehog.

you took a deep breath of fresh air, trying to make it look like that was the reason for your quick escape — and definitely not the forced proximity with him.

you started to complain as you dusted yourself off, cleaning your clothes from nothing, but the words stopped at your throat when your eyes landed on the view.

you wowed as you looked down at the city, a full smile appearing on your face as the sun hit your eyes, forcing you to squint them.

the noises of the other three speaking behind you were muffled as your focus was all on the streets and buildings in front of you.

behind you tom quietly motioned for sonic to go to your side, a knowing smirk that was copied by his wife made the mobian roll his eyes at the couple but a moment later he was crouching down at your feet.

he got back up while he held the ring satchel in his hands, then his eyes landed on the side of your face, the rays of the sun made you look almost angelic with the way your eyes were wide open, admiring the beauty of the world.

a whisper left your lips "it's- it's..." you started, voice like honey to match the atmosphere around you.

"beautiful" his green orbs were still trained on you as he finished the phrase for you.

unknowing of his situation you turned around, staring at him in the same way that you had been gazing at the horizon, a red hue reached his cheeks.

he coughed in his fist, looking down at his shoes — which were now matching his face — before he spoke again "makes it hard to leave uh?"

your expression hardened, just a tiny bit, a reminder that you were looking at him that way only because of everything else that he could not give you ( at least that's what he thought )

you nodded, sadly agreeing with him, you grabbed his hand without thinking twice before you dragged him back in front of the two humans.

"okay. what happens now?" asked maddie looking down at you.

you crossed your arms before you turned around to let the blue hedgehog explain "now, all i have to do is think of where i want the other end of the ring to appear, and i throw it."

tom looked between the three of you "so, that's it? we did it?" he opened up his arms.

"yeah! we did it!" confirmed sonic.

those words made you actually realize what was about to happen, soon you would have left green hills to go live in a planet full of mushrooms.

"hey" the man's voice brought you back from your thoughts "sorry we didn't get to do everything on your bucket list, pal." his gaze moved to you "and for the sleeping darts"

you dismissed him with your hand, chuckling at the memory "you brought us here, i think we are even" your hands landed on your hips.

"and for the bucket list, i did the ones i needed the most." added the mobian at your side, it felt like he had something more to say but he forced himself to stop there.

the woman pointed a fingers between the two boys "you two are so cute." you nodded along her words, agreeing with her.

"i've been thinking it" you spoke.

donut lord turned his head away from his wife as he denied everything "oh, please. what?"

sonic too seemed to be against the idea "we are not." he argued back, looking at you and waiting for you to help him.

"you are." you teased him, pointing a finger against his chest.

"no. we're not cute."

"we are a couple of loose cannons just living by our own rules." tried to explain the alien, the bag of rings still in his hand.

the man followed his train of thoughts "exactly."

"really?" you and maddie talked together, questioning them.

"yeah."

"and our rules include expressing heartfelt emotion." added sonic, trying to justify themselves.

you hid your laugh behind your hand as pretzel lady pretended to believe him "if you say so."

"okay, then." he grabbed your hand, making your shoulder suddenly stiffen.

he noticed your reaction and he let go of his grip, moving his hand away, you grabbed it back without giving him a single look.

you missed the way his smile reached his green eyes that glinted in the sunlight.

"all right. um, you gotta go, right?" donut lord made you remember that you weren't alone on that rooftop and that you still needed to leave the place.

"yeah, we gotta go." replied the mobian as he squeezed your hand a couple of times.

"i gotta go. we gotta go." coughed tom, pointing his thumb behind his shoulder.

"bye bye" you waved, sonic stuttered near you "see- all right, bye-bye."

you squeezed his hand back at him and he took a deep breath before turning around, not sparing the humans a glance.

you stilled, your hands were intertwined and it made him stop from doing another step, he turned towards you waiting for an explanation.

you smiled softly at him, hinting with your head to donut lord behind you "one more thing." you called.

you both went back to look towards the couple and the man stepped forward, kneeling down at your level.

"i'm sorry i was so hard on you." started the hedgehog "i know it's a tough decision for you to leave green hills. walking away from something you care about has to be painful."

the man realized what was happening inside his little friend's mind "you're not sure you really want to go, huh?"

the blue alien's face morphed into a sad expression "we- i don't want to go, but i can't stay. as long as i'm here, i put everyone in danger." he turned to look you into the eyes, your eyebrows going up in surprise "i can't do that." he turned back to face the human "i just want you to know that these last two days have been the best two days of my life."

your fingers brushed his gloved knuckles as the boys smiled to one another, tom walked back over to maddie as he spoke "you know, i never thought i'd say this, but, i'm actually gonna miss you two, double trouble"

the mobian shared a knowing look with you "we'll miss you too, donut lord."

"and thank you." you added quickly, mumbling under your breath.

the man smiled at your confession "for what?" he questioned a little confused.

you gave sonic a look that said i'm-not-gonna-tell-him-this and he spoke for you "for saving my life."

maddie glanced at her husband while you two finally turned around, he reached into his satchel to grab a ring before his green orbs met yours.

a doubt crossed his mind, your nod in response made him focus again.

he thought about the planet, the mushrooms that he hated and that he was going to have to live with, everything that he had to leave behind.

and then he thought about you, who was ready to go with him on a unknown world; you, who had found him after all those years.

you two still had a lot of catching up to do, and now you were going to have all time in the world to do so.

he wasn't going to be alone on his new home, he had you then and he was going to have you as long as he needed — just like his mother had wished.

he finally tossed the ring, it started to transform, but before it could become a portal it bounced off a flying drone.
