"SO, what's on your bucket list?" asked the blue hedgehog as he looked in front of him towards the open road.
that morning tom had gently woken him up, sonic's temperature had rose when he had found his arms around you, and his high pitched scream had woke you up — the first thing you had done was punch him in the face.
donut lord had promised to remind the alien of that precise moment for the rest of his life.
"who, me?" back to the present, he spoke to his blue friend.
for a moment his human's eyes landed on you, who were looking out the window in silence, your ears moving around as you listened to their conversation.
"yeah. everyone has a bucket list, right?" he questioned back, his head turned in your direction and the human didn't miss the way his ears pointed down as the teenager realized that you didn't want to partecipate in his little game.
"well, sure, but i mean, you're the one leaving earth, and i'm not planning on dying anytime soon." chuckled tom as he pointed around with his open palm.
"don't be so sure. your best friends are a magnet for danger." the hedgehog tilted his body in your direction but you kept your focus on the road, they both knew that you were listening.
"oh, are you anointing yourselves as the besties?"
sonic wasn't going to be stopped by that little question, instead pushing his chin up as he kept his eyes in the man "mm-hmm." he nodded
"a little presumptuous, but- i mean-" tom met sonic angry expression, his blue eyebrows scrunched as he waited for the man to continue his speech "what? no- i- i like you, of course" he tried to save himself "but, you know, we're not best friends."
"you tucked me in last night." the alien ears perked up as he heard your snickers after his response, a big smile coming to his face.
the human chuckled at both his answer and the sweet interaction.
sonic brought his hands up "fine, fine, fine. best animal friend."
"that would be my dog, ozzie." immediately responded the man.
"okay. let's drop this increasingly humiliating topic of conversation." said sonic and finally you turned around, landing your focus on the side of his face "bucket list. give it to me!"
"okay, there is one thing." you leaned your head on your friend's shoulder as you listened to donut lord's dream "in green hills, i've always felt, i don't know, more like a babysitter than a real cop, you know?"
you both nodded in his direction making him focus on driving as he went back to confessing this little secret to you two.
"so i want a chance to prove myself, under real pressure. i'm gonna move to san francisco, become a street cop. and, i don't know, see if i have what it takes." you smiled at his words, an encouraging one that tom had never seen from you before.
in the meanwhile you felt sonic stiffen near you and it made your proud expression slightly drop, you pushed his shoulder back a little and you saw his jaw dropped open in shock.
you hit his arm, trying to mentally tell him to be happy for his... human; but he didn't understand your message, or he didn't want to.
"what? why-why is your face doing that?" questioned donut lord sounding almost worried for the alien's face.
you rolled your eyes "because he's stupid" you huffed out as you crossed your arm.
"you're leaving green hills?!" started the hedgehog as you went back to look out the window.
an annoyed "okay" left the man's mouth.
"b-b-but why? why would you leave green hills?" asked the mobian still not understanding the other's point of view.
"this may be hard for you to understand, but green hills is a small town." the human's eyes moved back and forth from the road to the passenger seat "it's a very small town."
"it's not small! there are hundreds of people." replied sonic, defending the small place that he could call home.
"for earth its actually really small" you whispered making him throw a look in your direction, your gaze hardened when you felt him roll his eyes behind you.
you knew his little attitude.
the alien's tone started to sound like he was begging "it's a perfect town, and the people need you."
tom clicked his tongue incredulous "please, i clean out their gutters, i jump-start their cars in the winter. they could call anybody to do that."
"sure, they can call anybody, but they don't. they call you." sonic's voice made you straighten up, still not turning around because you didn't want to give him that satisfaction, but you were even more focused now.
"you don't understand" tried to calm him tom.
instead his phrase had the opposite effect making sonic rise his voice "you're not making any sense!"
"would you calm down?" tried again the human as the mobian got up on his feet, in the meanwhile you kept on ignoring him.
you hated his little tantrums.
"you come from a great town with great people and, by my count, zero bad guys trying to kill you!" the blue alien kept speaking and you didn't want to listen so you grabbed his shoulder and you pushed him back down on the seat.
your touch made his tone softened, he laid his hand on yours — which was still on his shoulder — as he looked donut lord in the eyes "besides, what could possibly be more important than protecting the people you care about?"
you could hear your heart beating in your ears as you listened to his words, his fingertips caressing the back of your hands just like the night before.
the night before.
the way you fell asleep into each other's arms, cuddling and murmuring no senses into your ears, did that really happened or was it just a dream?
no, it definitely happened.
an harpoon shoot straight trough the back of the car, hitting the dashboard.
you looked behind your shoulder outside the back window and you saw a big black car with a red light on it, you pushed yourself over sonic, you feet hitting his face as you jumped onto the backseat.
as the hedgehog resumed his little speech you started to search for your bag, from the front only the top of your head could be seen as you tried to look under the seats.
tom swerved to try and yank the harpoon loose but it was pointless as the 'bad guys' car slowly started to pull your truck towards it.
your blue friend had got back up on his feet as you were digging for your precious bag "you know what? i was wrong about you. you're not the donut lord at all! you're more like... the jerk lord!" he shouted as your eyes finally caught a glimpse of your possession.
"have you noticed the harpoon stuck in our dash?!" screamed back the man as he tried to focus on the life or death situation.
while your fingers had almost reached the sack the human slammed on the gas pedal and the apron finally started coming loose, the truck slammed against the traffic barrier and you lost your grip on the item.
an animalistic growl left your mouth as you pushed yourself back up on the seats, your eyes widened when you found the other mobian on the hood of the car, glowing.
"sonic! your body!" you pointed at him and he looked down to see his fingers radiating blue energy.
"oh, no, no, no, no, not again!" you heard him beg, you jumped in the front seat to try and grab your bag from the other side but an arm stopped you from bending over.
"hold on" ordered donut lord, you were curious to see what he would have done next.
"why?" questioned the alien outside the window, voicing your thoughts.
"because i'm gonna do this!" was the human's last warning before you felt your whole body weight move forward as he slammed on the gas pedal.
you almost missed the blue blur that flew trough the hair, you followed him with your eyes and you watched as he curled into a ball.
he ended up against the car and it made it fall on the side, destroying it.
you slapped the man's arms over and over as you repeated at him to turn around — even thought he was already doing so.
he drove back to sonic and you screamed your childhood friend's name, searching for a sign that would tell you that he was okay.
and thankfully you found it.
