daybreak

unto the end

Your Icarus is falling.

Wind tearing through molten feathers, they spiral behind you like so many golden teardrops (the tears in your eyes burn away before you can mourn them). The sun bears down on you, wrathful and eager to punish your insolence. (All you ever wanted was to escape the world below.)

Fool, it says, sneering from dark eyes that burn with the light of the universe. Your failure is your reward.

The ground grows closer, beckoning you with open arms of soil and sea. Your skin is cracked, leaking hopes and hazes of dreams now dead. You think, for a moment, that it wouldn't be so bad. Grinning through chapped lips, you ponder demise and what comes after. (Beyond is such an intimate concept. Death is a close friend, but the thought of the after is your confidante.) Your ears are deafened, by wind or the blood pooling under your burnt tongue, you aren't sure.

Red joins the stolen feathers in an angel's dance, twirling together in dissonant harmony. They sparkle under the blazing light that steals your breath, flashing before your tearless eyes (it warms your face until it burns, burns like acid and bright orange embers. You close your eyes and spread your arms further) and files away at your blackened fingertips.

Yet you still reach (you've held out your hands, crooked and calloused for so long) towards the sun, towards the cold fury and righteous conviction. You reach and pray and beg (begging never got you far) for a rescue, a reprieve.

(You pray for it to end with a smile that won't break.)

Your throat is cracked and parched, no rain to sooth your anguish. An empty well, thirsting for life and comfort and the hopes that slipped so easily from your crooked fingers like water. The sea grows, vast and glittering like so many of your lost feathers, but it won't quench the need to live. (You longed to live. Is that so wrong?)

The sun casts a final, indifferent glance at your broken form.

And you smile, stained red and bared sharp fangs, as you plummet.
