flash forward pt. 3
"Would. You. Stop. Moving?" Lydia demanded, pulling at my hair in between each word.
I let out a huff of air, blowing a curl out of my face. "I can't." I admitted. "I'm too nervous."
"You know, I don't get the nerves." Malia interjected from where she sat on the couch. "Isn't this something you're supposed to be excited for."
Shooting her a quick glare, I shrugged. "I--I just--what if something goes wrong?"
Malia snorted. "Do you think he's going to change his mind?"
"No." I asserted. "But what if I fall? Or what if I forget what I'm supposed to say?"
Lydia gave me a gentle smile as she placed her hands on my shoulders, looking at me through the mirror. "Syd, this day is about you and Liam. This is your wedding, not everyone else's. If you fall, so what. If you forget your vows, so what? He loves you and that's all that matters."
Ten years. Ten years since Liam and I had first met and we were finally getting married.
Two of those ten were spent engaged, enjoying every blissful moment. But now the day was here in which we would stand up in front of our closest family and friends and profess our feelings.
I gave her a small nod, chewing at the skin around my fingernails as Lydia continued working on my hair.
"Syd, stop it. You're going to ruin your nails." A stern voice from across the room demanded.
I turned to look at the blonde haired girl. Willa Jenkins, aka my third bridesmaid. The two of us had met our freshman year of college and became fast friends. She had found out about everything supernatural two years into our friendship and had been graciously accepted by the pack.
In fact, she had been so accepted that her and Theo eventually started dating. Theo, the boy who I still refused to verbally call my friend. But I couldn't deny that he had changed tremendously since our high school days. I may have refused to say it out loud, but it was no longer "my friends and Theo." It was "my friends" and that included Theo.
It had taken over five years following the Anuk-ite debacle, but Theo had finally been accepted into the pack. It wasn't always easy getting all of us to get along, but somehow it all worked out.
I gave Willa an irritated look at her reprimand. "I should have let Stiles be a bridesmaid." I mumbled, "He'd let me chew my nails.
Stiles had practically begged to stand up with me instead of with Liam. In his own words it was "Nothing against Liam, I just like you better."
And as much as he claimed it was breaking gender norms and was "actually very progressive," Lydia eventually convinced him to stand with Liam instead.
So, that left my bridesmaids as Lydia, Malia, Willa and my dad's new girlfriend's daughter-Sawyer. No matter how much I protested against the final bridesmaid, I had lost that battle.
Sawyer, the youngest and most miserable of the group sat alone in front one of the mirrors, piling on too much eye shadow.
Cringing, I looked to Lydia. "When is my mom going to be back?"
Lydia sighed, pinning the final piece of my hair back. "She just went to get coffee, Syd. She's not going to miss the wedding."
I huffed, crossing my arms over my chest as I pushed my lips into a pout. "I'm not appreciating all the hate I'm getting from you guys."
"Stop being annoying then." Sawyer muttered, briefly looking up from her eyeshadow pallet.
"Cool the attitude." I ordered. "And while you're at it cool the eyeshadow."
Sawyer scoffed as Malia let out a loud laugh. "I love weddings."
Before I could shoot back another retort, there was a knock at the door. I sat up in my chair as I craned my neck to see toward the entrance of the room. Part of me was afraid something horrible had happened...I guess I was conditioned to automatically think the worst.
Lydia gave my shoulder a light squeeze before she sauntered toward the door, looking through the peep hole for a minute before pulling the door open.
"If it's Stiles, tell him to go away!" I called, still unable to see who was at the door.
"First of all, that's rude." Stiles announced, pushing past Lydia so he could enter the room. "Second of all, Scott and I brought you a surprise, but if you're going to be rude I'll just return it."
Scott wore a goofy grin as he followed behind. "Syd, you look gorgeous."
Glaring at Stiles for a moment, I turned to my brother. "We've only done my hair so far."
Stiles groaned as he threw his head back. "Right. Syd, you look awesome- but back to our surprise."
I heaved a sigh as I pulled myself out of the makeup chair. "Fine, Stiles. What is it?"
A mischievous grin covered his face as he looked toward Scott for a minute before turning back toward the door. "Get in here!"
Sharing a curious look with Lydia, I watched the door...nothing.
"What--"
"God." Stiles muttered under his breath. "Must I do everything."
Just as he began stomping toward the door, a figure walked in and I felt myself freeze, pure shock written on my face.
"No way." I breathed out, the smile already breaking onto my face as I made my way toward them.
A chuckle flew from their lips as the caught me in a tight hug. "Did you really think I'd miss your big day?"
"You didn't RSVP, Isaac." I mumbled, pulling away with the smile still on my face.
Stiles cleared his throat. "That's the point of a surprise, you're not supposed to know that he's coming."
Isaac grinned as I looked back toward him, reaching out to give him a light shove. "It's been long enough." I chastised. "Nice of you to make an appearance."
Isaac Lahey. Also known as another one of my surrogate brothers. He had quickly become one of my favourite people when he lived with us for a short stint. I was devastated when he took off to France.
We had kept in limited contact over the past while, but it was only so easy to stay in touch when you're living in two different continents.
"Who's this?" Sawyer wondered, quirking a suggestive brow as she made her way toward us.
Scott and I shared an exasperated look as I rolled my eyes. "Turn around." I ordered, pointing back toward the direction she came from. "He's old enough to be your father."
Isaac's brow furrowed. "That's not even remotely true."
I leaned closer to him. "Just go with it. Please."
"Okay!" Lydia announced, stepping into the centre of the group. "This has been nice, but we have a bride to get ready. Boys, get out. Now."
Isaac raised his hands in surrender as Stiles shot Lydia a disapproving glare. Scott just simply pulled me into a quick hug, letting me know that he would see me soon.
My mom returned soon after that, and it felt like a majority of the stress had been lifted from my shoulders. Malia was right, this was supposed to be a fun day.
But with a group like ours, it seemed like chaos was inevitable. I thought back to the rehearsal dinner the night before which included a lot of "But I wanted to go first" and "How does my walk look? Is it too posh?"
Despite the chaos, I wouldn't want it any other way.
So, as I stood just behind the door, my hair done, makeup applied and dress on, I was thankful to have such an amazing pack-family.
"Ready, Syd?"
I turned to look at my brother who was giving me a gentle smile. He stood on one side of me, my mother on the other. I had asked both of them to walk me down the aisle and even my father thought it was a great idea.
Letting out a shaky sigh, I gripped onto my mother's arm a bit tighter. "Yeah. I'm ready."
On cue, the doors swung open and the entire space came into view. I had seen it last night and this morning, but now with everything in place it looked even more beautiful than before.
But I only admired the venue for a brief moment, as within seconds my attention was on Liam. He had been standing with his back facing us, muttering something to Mason. But once the music started, he turned and faced me.
I watched as his face fell slightly in shock, his eyes scanning me as I slowly made my way toward him. I could hear my heart hammering in my chest, I'm sure he could hear it too.
An awe-struck smile came to his face as he quickly reached up and wiped his eye. My mom noted the expression on Liam's face and gave my arm a quick squeeze. "If you ever doubted how he felt about you, that reaction right there tells you all." She whispered.
My own eyes became watery as we finally reached the front. My eyes quickly looked to our wedding party. Lydia wore a teary smile, while Malia and Willa wore beaming ones. Sawyer simply looked like she wanted to be anywhere else.
On Liam's side, Mason gave me a toothy grin, while Corey looked like he was going to throw up from nerves. Stiles looked like he himself was holding back tears.
"I love you, Syd." My brother whispered as he pulled me into a tight hug before taking up his spot next to Stiles.
"My little girl. I love you." My mom said softly, tears in her eyes as she pressed a kiss to my cheek.
"Stop making me cry." I teased, trying to wipe my eye without smudging my makeup.
My mom let out a soft laugh as she passed me off to Liam, pressing a quick kiss to his cheek as well.
Liam gently ran his thumb across the back of my hand as I stepped into position, handing my bouquet off to Lydia before turning to my soon-to-be husband.
"You look beautiful." Liam whispered as the minister addressed the audience. "Absolutely stunning."
I smiled at his, reaching out to adjust his bowtie slightly. "You don't look too bad yourself."
He laughed quietly as he just stared at me, and me at him. I swore we stayed like that the entire time, only breaking our gaze when the minister addressed us or asked us to speak.
When it came time for vows, Liam didn't reach for a script like I thought he might. Everything he said came directly from his heart.
"Sydney, I can't even begin to explain how much you have changed my life. I changed the moment I met you, in more ways than one."
I had to stifle a laugh at that comment, one that only a select amount of people in the audience would understand.
"You teach me to be my best self, but you don't force me to be anything but me. You're kind, and gentle and truly one of the most amazing people I have ever had the privilege to know. You're the one who keeps me sane, keeps me anchored. So, I promise to love you like you deserve. I promise to love you with my entire heart and then some. I promise not to critique your driving, even when you almost kill everyone in the car," That earned a chorus of laughter from the crowd and a scowl from me. "And I promise to fold my laundry within a reasonable time period."
I let out a teary laugh. "Yeah right."
He reached up, wiping a tear from the side of my face. "I promise to be the best husband I can be and I promise to tell you each and every day how much I love you- even when we argue. I promise to stand by your side through everything. No matter what. I love you Syd and I couldn't imagine doing this life with anyone else."
I was a full-blown mess of tears as he finished speaking, letting out a nervous laugh, I tried to salvage my makeup. "Tough act to follow."
Laughter rippled through the audience as I sent Liam a gentle smile.
Once the noise died down, I let out a shaky breath. "The night I met you, although a rather unconventional meeting, was the best night of my life."
My mind raced back to the day that I officially met Liam. It started at lacrosse practice, and somehow ended with him duct taped in my brother's bathtub.
I saw Scott and Stiles share a sheepish look from the corner of my eye at the reminder of that night.
"From that day forward, I felt things I had never felt before- felt a love I had never felt before. I know our relationship wasn't always perfect-God knows two fifteen year olds experiencing their first love can never be seamless-But I wouldn't have it any other way. Liam, you're my heart, my soul, my protector and my best friend. You're everything I could have ever wished for and so much more. You make every day of my life brighter, you make every hardship easier. You're the most perfect man I could have ever dreamed of."
Liam's eyes were focused on me and I could see that they had become glassy once again. He held onto my hand a little tighter, watching me with a sentimental smile.
"So," I breathed. "I promise to stop being a backseat driver and I promise to let you drive more often since I'm apparently so bad." I let out a watery laugh. "I promise to never go to bed angry, and to talk everyday- even when we're at each others throats. I promise love you with all my might, and to always be there for you. I love you so much, and I'm so excited for our next chapter together."
The room was so silent as I finished, it seemed that you could hear a pin drop.
Finally, the minister threw up his hands as a grin covered his face. "Liam, you can kiss your bride!"
The audience broke into cheers as Liam pulled me toward him, firmly pressing his lips against mine. If our entire families weren't watching, I would have never let him let me go.
But as we pulled apart, and I was met with the cheering faces of my parents, Derek, Argent, Sheriff and Isaac among the many, many others, I let a grin overtake my face. I felt sadness for the fact that Allison was absent, but somehow it felt like she was still here.
Liam gripped onto my hand as we turned, our joined hands rising up in the air in triumph.
We were married.
