"Mrs Finch?" Scott questioned, turning to look at Liam and I as the three of us sat inside the Jeep in the school parking lot. "You sure?"
Liam nodded as we watched her exit her car. "It was her voice." he confirmed.
I gave a small nod of agreement. There was almost no doubt in my mind that that was who we heard over the phone.
"Okay," Scott breathed, "But that still doesn't confirm she's the Anuk-ite, or even that she's one of us."
"It was still her." I argued, leaning closer to the two boys from where I sat in the back seat.
Scott turned to look at me, "Okay, well then we need to get closer, see if we can get her to expose her supernatural side."
I wore a curious look as I spoke. "How are we going to do that?"
My brother looked between Liam and I, letting out a small puff of air. "You two are going to do it?"
Liam's face immediately dropped. "Well, what about the hunters and the Nazi student brigade?" he demanded, his words coming out jumbled.
I gave Liam a reassuring look before looking to my brother. "Maybe I should just go in alone." I offered, noting the fear my boyfriend was experiencing over stepping foot in that school again.
Scott looked out into the parking lot before looking back at us. "You'll both go." he advised. "But I'll be right there with you. Just find out, and get out."
Liam was shaking his head as he rested it against the head rest on the seat. His eyes were set forward as he made a disgusted look. "I hate biology."
---
Five minutes later, after all but dragging Liam from the Jeep, the two of us walked into biology class.
I stayed closed to him, my eyes darting the halls as we went to ensure no one was deciding to plan another attack on him. I could tell he sensed my unease over his safety, and sent me a small reassuring smile as we entered the classroom.
We had seemed to make it to class unscathed, however trouble arrived as we went to take out seats. Liam let out a low sigh as he dropped his bag onto the table, sliding onto the stool. I was about to follow suit when someone grabbed a hold of my bag, pulling me away from the seat.
My face clouded in confusion and anger at the sight of Gabe taking the seat beside Liam, a smug smile on his face. Liam looked back at me, his eyes widening in fear.
"Gabe," I snapped, moving so he could see my face. "What the hell are you doing?"
"Sydney," Mrs. Finch called as she turned from where she had been writing on the blackboard, "Please take your seat."
I sent Gabe a glare before slumping into the table a row behind the two boys. Liam glanced back at me, and I sent him a small nod. Gabe wouldn't do anything in the middle of class-I hoped.
Mrs. Finch, now satisfied with the fact that I had taken a seat, directed her attention elsewhere. "Liam." she breathed, an element of shock present on her face. "I didn't think we would be seeing you in class again."
I bit down on my cheek, trying to prevent myself from biting out a snippy remark. Luckily, Liam took care of that. "Can't let my GPA go down just because I got beat up in class." he retorted, turning to look at Gabe as he finished his sentence.
Mrs Finch nodded slightly, guilt present on her features. "Yes. Well I..." she trailed off, seemingly not know what to say to the student she had let get beaten in her classroom. She cleared her throat as something distracted her. "Gabe," she snapped, taking a step toward the boys' table. "I said no phones." she chastised, grabbing the device from his hands.
I met eyes with Liam, a nervous look overcoming both of our faces at the prospect that Gabe could have gotten a text out to his fellow hunters. I watched as Liam whispered something, likely to my brother who was listening out in the hall.
Mrs. Finch turned to the board, beginning her lesson on alleles, genetics and the Punnett square. However, my attention was not on the lesson, and was instead focused on Liam who was pulling a sonic device from his bag. I watched as he shoved an ear plug into his ear before setting off the device.
Unlike we had hoped, Mrs. Finch didn't react at all, and continued on with her lesson. However, the girl next to me clamped her hands over her ears before rushing from the class.
A defeated sigh fell from my lips as Liam glance back at me, slightly shaking his head. Maybe this was going to be harder than we thought.
Mrs. Finch turned away from the board, clearing her throat. "Where did Rebecca go?" she wondered, looking at the empty seat beside me.
"Bathroom." I answered, giving her a tight smile.
If she didn't believe me, she didn't show it. Instead, she turned the smile with a small nod. "Okay then." she announced, moving toward our tables. "Three volunteers please?"
Gabe's hand immediately shot up, meanwhile Liam stood from his seat. I let out a small grunt as I raised my hand as well. Mrs. Finch nodded, allowing for the three of us to make our way up to the front.
I grabbed onto Liam as we approached the board, pulling him close to me. "What's going on?" I whispered.
He glanced at Gabe before looking back at me. "Scott wants to know if Gabe got a text out. We might be running out of time." he muttered before pulling something out of his pocket. "You distract Gabe, I'll take care of this." he advised, holding his palm out to reveal wolfsbane.
I nodded, stopping beside Gabe at the board. I sent him a smirk as I picked up the chalk. "Bet you weren't expecting to see us in class." I mocked, beginning to work on the questioned in front of me. "I mean since you and your friends tried to kill us and all." I added.
Gabe glared at me as he continued working out his own questioned. "Too bad we didn't get the job done." he muttered. "I think you're idiots for showing up."
I nodded, not tearing my eyes from the board. "We'll see who the real idiot is." I muttered, stepping away as I finished answering the question in front of me.
"Liam," Mrs. Finch called from the back of the classroom where she had been helping students. "That's not even remotely right. Take a seat, we'll try this again."
I glanced over at Liam, ensuring he had gotten his job done. He sent me a small nod, and then two of us returned to our seats without a word.
Watching as Mrs. Finch approached the board, I leaned forward ever so slightly in anticipation as she began to erase Liam's work.
As the dust from the chalk began to swirl around her, Mrs. Finch let out a small cough. Liam turned back to look at me quickly, his face covered in anticipation.
My heart sped up in my chest as Mrs. Finch's shoulders began to heave, as if she was trying to fight something off. Was she about to shift in front of all of us?
I was practically leaning off of my seat in expectation as a sneeze flew from our teacher's mouth. She turned to Gabe who was still working at the board beside her, letting out a small chuckle. "You'd think after twenty years I'd be used to that."
An audible sigh of disappointment fell from my lips as I leaned back. This was proving to be very difficult. Liam looked back at me once again, shaking his head in frustration.
While my eyes were on Liam, I seemed to have missed something that happened at the front. As all of a sudden, Mrs. Finch called out to the class. "That's it for today." she announced.
Everyone began to look around in confusion. Class had barely just started.
She remained facing away from us as she spoke again. "Class dismissed."
I still wore a slightly confused look on my face as I shoved my books into my beg, itching to speak to Liam. He was just about to turn around to join me when he was stopped.
"Not you, Liam." Mrs. Finch ordered, still facing toward the board. "You stay put."
Liam's face fell slightly as I arrived at his side. "What does she want?" I whispered, leaning into his side so only he could hear me.
He shook his head, his eyes moving to meet mine. "I don't-"
"Sydney." Mrs. Finch called, finally turning around to face us. "Last time I checked, your name was not Liam."
"We have next period together." I explained, trying to create a cover story of why I needed to stay with him. "We always walk together." I added.
She nodded slowly, "I'm sure it wouldn't kill you to walk to one class alone." she answered, a forced smile coming to her face.
"It's not me I'm worried about." The words left my mouth before I had a chance to stop them. I could feel Liam winced beside me as Mrs. Finch narrowed her eyes ever so slightly.
"Right." she whispered, her eyes then travelling to the door. "Time for you to go."
I turned to Liam, deciding I was only going to leave if he felt comfortable. He met my eyes and sent me a small nod. "I'll see you soon." he promised.
A sigh fell from my lips as I gave Mrs. Finch a final look before making my way out of the classroom. I knew that Liam would be okay, that Scott would be listening to the conversation no doubt, but something about the situation still made me nervous.
As I emerged into the hall, Scott rose his brows at me. I rolled my eyes as I joined him, promptly crossing my arms over my chest in anger. "She kicked me out." I muttered.
Scott nodded, a slightly amused smile on his face. "I heard."
I shook my head as I looked back across the hall. "What are they saying?" I questioned, focusing on back on the task at hand. I leaned closer to my brother in hopes that I could see into the classroom better.
Scott kept his eyes locked forward. "Liam's telling her he knows about her pack...that he knows she's a werewolf."
I looked over to him with a surprised look. "That boy really does not beat around the bush does he?" I muttered, turning back to look into the biology room.
"She's denying it." Scott mumbled, "Accusing Liam of being on drugs." he added, still focused on their conversation.
I looked between Scott and the classroom, worry building up. "Were we wrong about this?" I questioned, my voice wavering.
"No." He whispered, finally looking over at me. "Do you still have the phone?" he asked, his eyes darting back to the classroom quickly. I nodded as I reached into my backpack, grabbing the phone and placing it in my brother's outstretched palm.
I looked back to the classroom, as I could now hear Mrs. Finch with my own ears. She was yelling at Liam to get out.
"Come on." Scott announced, already flipping open the phone and making for the classroom. I followed, quickly zipping up my bag before running after him.
"You have to get out of my classroom!" Mrs. Finch demanded, "Go!" She was staring Liam down with an urgent look.
As Scott and I entered the room, Scott held the phone out, playing the voicemail the three of us had heard about a hundred times at this point. At the sound of the voice-her own voice- Mrs. Finch tore her attention away from Liam, and toward us.
He face fell as Scott kept moving through the classroom, making his way toward her. The message continued to play, and with each step Scott took, Mrs. Finch took her own. Her eyes were full of confusion, panic, pain.
When she was close enough to my brother, she snatched the phone from his hands, quickly slamming it shut. "Where did you find this?" she questioned. Her voice was shaky, as were her hands which were gripping tightly to the device.
Scott, Liam and I shared a quick look...we've got her.
