51.

"Surgery?" I gasped looking from my mom to the doctor.

Doctor Kalder nodded, motioning towards the X Ray, "You have 3 different breaks in your hand, this is one of the worst breaks I've seen in awhile."

Liam, who was beside me, winced as he looked at the X Ray, "Is surgery the only option?" he asked.

"I'm afraid so. It is a fairly complex surgery due to the various nerves that can be nicked. If something goes wrong Sydney could lose use of her hand." Dr. Kalder explained.

I gasped at the mention of me losing the use of my hand, I needed my hand.

"Dr. Kalder is the best orthopaedic surgeon this hospital has. You'll be fine Syd." my mom soothed.

"May I ask how this happened?" Dr. Kalder asked looking up from some notes he was taking. I looked at Liam and he gave me a surprised look.

Liam and I spoke simultaneously.

"Car door."

"I fell."

When our stories didn't line up, we tried again.

"She fell."

"Car door."

Our heads shot towards each other as we realized we weren't great at lying. "I fell into a car door." I said, scrunching my face up as I realized that made literally zero sense.

Dr. Kalder gave me an unconvinced look before looking back down at my chart, "Okay Sydney, I have an opening tomorrow at 9am."

"Tomorrow?" I asked in shock.

He nodded, "Does that work."

"Yeah, that's perfect." I mumbled, my mom giving me a small smile.

"Okay, you know not to eat or drink anything after 12am, correct?"

I nodded and looked down at my feet, this wasn't going to be good considering now I'd be missing at least a few days of school.

"Alright then, I'll see you tomorrow then." he said giving me a reassuring smile.

"Thank you Dr. Kalder." my mom called as he left the room.

"Now," she announced, turning to look at Liam and I "Does one of you want to tell me what really happened?"

---

"Do you want another pillow?"

"No"

"Do you want a drink?"

"No."

"Do you want-"

"Liam! I'm fine."

He slumped back in his chair, crossing his arms across his chest.

"You should go with Scott, he needs your help." I pointed out, flipping through the channels on the hospital television.

"I don't want to leave you." he announced softly.

I scoffed before sending him a small smile, "I'm pretty sure finding the Beast is more important than this." I said, holding up my casted hand.

I had my surgery this morning and ever since then Liam refused to leave my side, no matter how many times I told him I was fine.

He sighed as he had a mental battle with himself. "Liam just go, I'll be fine. Besides, I'm allowed to go home any minute now."

"Well how about I just wait until your mom gets back." he offered.

I gave him a smile, "Fine."

Another five minutes passed my mom came waltzing into the room, a wheelchair in tow. "Let's get you out of here." she smiled.

I grinned at her as she passed me my clothes to change into. "I'll be right back." I mumbled walking into the washroom so I could change. It took me longer than usual, trying to do it with one hand proved rather difficult.

When I came back out, Liam was still sitting in the room.

"I'm going home now, Liam." I pointed out, as I finished slipping on my shoes.

He gave me a look, before sighing.  "Okay fine. I'll go find Scott." he mumbled, pushing himself up off the chair.

"Wait! Liam!" I called as he was about to leave. He stopped, turning to look at me.

"Thank you for staying with me, and thank you for the teddy bear." I smiled grabbing the stuffed bear Liam had bought me.

He smiled as he opened the door, "I'll come and see you tomorrow alright?"

I nodded with a smile as he left. As soon as the door was closed my mom turned to look at me with a huge smile on her face.

"Since when were you two so close again." she teased. I knew she wasn't Liam's biggest fan after everything that happened, but I also knew she was aware of how much he meant to.

I rolled my eyes as I tucked the bear under my arm.  "He's one of the only friends I have."

"Syd you have lot's of friends." she pointed out.

"Okay friends that aren't Scott's age." I argued.

My mom remained silent as I grabbed the rest of my stuff, "He just means a lot to me okay?" I said softly as I opened the door with my good hand.

"Okay, okay." She said holding her hands up in surrender.

---

"Are you sure you should be here?" Liam asked as the two of us walked towards the school library.

"Yes, I need to be here." I responded as I pulled open the door, scanning the room for the rest of the group. Once I found them I started towards them, Liam trailing behind me.

"Syd." Lydia gasped pulling me into a hug, it was the first time I've seen her since she got out of Eichen.

"How are you?" I asked, scanning her face for any kind of lasting impact from that night.

She gave me a smile, "I'm okay. How are you? How's your hand?"

I nodded, glancing down at the cast. "It's okay." I assured.

"Okay let's get started." Scott announced, motioning for all of us to sit down. We did as he said, each of us taking a seat at the table. Our order of business today was finding more about the Beast. More specifically, how to stop it.

"Mason says it's not just a transmission of frequency. It's high power, like it has to be a really high signal." Liam explained.

"And it's causing it to shift?" Lydia questioned.

"I don't think it's just that." Scott interjected. "Last night Argent said that it's getting stronger." he explained, "What if the Dread Doctors are trying to make the Beast grow faster?"

"With frequencies?" Stiles asked.

"No, by shifting. The frequencies are just the trigger. The important part is when it shifts into the werewolf." Scott explained.

"Like Peter." Lydia pointed out.

"Right!" my brother exclaimed, "When Peter was an alpha, he got stronger every full moon. Eventually the burns healed and he was back to normal."

"So the Dread Doctors don't want to wait for the full moon." Liam observed.

"They want the Beast to be as strong as possible and as fast as possible." Scott told us.

"Because of Parrish." Liam confirmed.

"If this is happening tonight, what are we going to do?" I asked the same thing everyone else was thinking.

"Well we got one clue to go on." Stiles said, turning and digging for something in his bag, eventually pulling out a picture of a bloodied foot print, "This came from the hospital. Whoever's lurking inside of the Beast is wearing a size 10 indeterminate make."

"Indeterminate?" Lydia questioned.

"Means it's a partial print. Basically it was all we were able to get considering all the fire, blood and carnage." Stiles said bluntly.

"How many size tens are out there?" my brother asked.

"Only one with Parrish's blood on the sole."

"So are we going to try and get the game cancelled?" Liam wondered. It seemed like the most obvious choice.

"No, no, we're gonna play, but we're just gonna hope really hard that it doesn't get turned into a blood soaked massacre." Stiles replied, sarcasm dripping from his every word.

I shot him a look as Liam pressed on. "Okay," he muttered, accepting Stiles' mocking. "But aren't we kinda missing out on a chance to catch this thing?" he asked, just as we were all about to leave. "We don't have the who, but we have the where and the when."

Everyone seemed at odds, Liam was right but at the same time we knew this was a risk.

"There's going to be too many people." Scott argued.

"And we don't know if it's even going to happen." Lydia added. "It might just end up being a regular lacrosse game."

"When is it ever a regular lacrosse game?" I mumbled.

"It's possible, right?"

"Well yeah, it's absolutely possible." Stiles agreed, still not seeming so sure himself.

"So we're still getting the game cancelled." Liam verified.

"We're getting the game cancelled." Scott agreed, all of us grabbing our stuff, now on a mission to get this game cancelled.

---

"You shouldn't be here." Scott mumbled as we walked across the field.

I ignored him, my eyes locked on the numerous TV trucks that were stationed around the field. We had zero luck getting the game cancelled, so now here we were, all of us at risk of being torn apart by a serial werewolf killer.

Twenty minutes after Scott and I arrived, a group of us stood in one of the empty classrooms, Scott, Kira, Liam and Stiles all dressed, ready for the game.

"Mason you know your part right?" Scott asked, looking over to Liam's best friend and the newest member of our plan.

Mason nodded, "Corey and I break into the Devenford bus and search the shoes."

"I take out the TV vans." Malia added.

"Right before the whistle, Coach forfeits the game." Stiles laid out the next part of the plan.

"And the rest of us are looking for a size 10, with a bloody sole." Liam explained.

"Just out of curiosity, what if it doesn't work?" Malia asked. "What if we have to go up against this thing. I mean I hate to bring up bad memories but Scott's still healing from what Theo did to him."

"No, he's not." Kira corrected.

"She's right." Scott said with a small smile, he then pulled up his shirt, revealing his torso which was fully healed, "It happened the night we got Lydia out of Eichen House, I healed, when we were all together again, when we were a pack."

"The Beast doesn't have a pack." Liam said with a smile.

"Not like us. We can do this guys. No one dies tonight." Scott promised.

---

I sat in the bleachers, waiting for the moment the game was called off. I checked my phone, mentally cursing myself when I remember I forgot to take the pain meds for my hand.

"Hey!" I looked up to see Sophia sit down beside me, a huge smile on her face, beside her was Hayden.

"You shouldn't be here." I almost shouted.

A scowl spread across Sophia's face as she leaned closer to me, "Okay, I get that you don't like Hayden but you don't have to be so rude." she chastised.

"No Soph, I- it's just you really shouldn't have come tonight okay, it's dangerous." I tried to explain.

"Dangerous my ass. Come on Hayden, we can sit somewhere else." she snapped as the two of them moved a few rows down.

I felt if I was about to cry as I looked out onto the field, only to find Liam watching me, sympathy written across his face. I turned away from him, looking down at my feet, just wishing for this night to be over.

My sadness soon turned to shock as Coach, fresh out of 'rehab', didn't forfeit the game. Instead he blew the whistle, signalling for the players to get on the field.

I looked over at Stiles with wide eyes. He looked back and me and shook his head in awe.

"Sydney." I jumped at the calling of my name. "Down here." the voice whispered. I looked under my feet to see Brett's sister Lori, "Come with me." She instructed.

I nodded as I hopped off the bleachers, meeting her on the ground, "Can you help me cover the bleachers, there's a lot of shoes."

"Yeah, let's split up, you go that way, I'll take this end." I said pointing to the two ends. "We'll meet in the middle.

I started at the end closest to the TV vans, looking at every foot of every person, after looking at over 50 shoes, I still had no luck. When Lori and I met back in the middle, she reached the same verdict I did, whoever was the Beast, they weren't in the stands.

Just as we were about to keep looking, an angry looking Kira stormed past us. Scott, who had followed behind her, gave Lori at look, at to which she nodded, taking off after Kira.

"Find anything?" Scott asked me. I shook my head, my eyes scanning around the field.

"Heard anything from Mason and Corey?" I questioned as I continued looking at shoes.  It was  his turn to shake his head.

"MCCALL!!!" Coach's voice boomed from the field.

"You should probably go." I said nodding back in the direction of the game. I was not going to mess with coach.

"Be safe!" he called as he took off.

I let out a small gasp of shock as pain shot through my hand, looking back now, it probably wasn't smart not to take those pills.

"Find anything?" Stiles asked, all of a sudden standing right beside me.

"What are you doing here, shouldn't you be playing?" I inquired, raising a brow in suspicion.

Stiles waved me off, nodding out toward the field. "Your boyfriend's got the game covered."

I looked past the bleacher to see Liam running down the field, the ball in his possession. I smiled lightly as I turned back to Stiles.

"We gotta keep looking." He ordered.

I nodded as he moved down the bleachers, stopping as he grabbed one of the shoes softly, trying to see the size. When he couldn't see the bottom he pulled a little harder. The owner of the shoes still wouldn't budge so this time he yanked the leg, causing the person to swing back and kick him in the face.

I gasped as he stumbled back towards the field, holding his face, within a second he was down on the ground.

"Stiles!" I hissed, trying to pull him up. "Stiles, get up."

He shot up from the ground almost hitting me in the head. "I'm okay!" he shouted.

I shook my head as I ran over to the bench, grabbing an ice pack from one of the bags and thrusting it towards him, "Here."

He took it gratefully and leaned up against the bleachers.

"Malia should almost-" he was cut off by an ear splitting screeching sound, all the lights and TV vans sparked as the sound split through the night. I clamped my hands over my ears, wincing at the sound.

But that wasn't the sound that sent chills up my spine. I felt my heart drop of the sound of a large growl filled the air.

I turned to Stiles with wide eyes, just as a figure went rushing by us, towards the sound. Liam.

"Liam! Liam wait!" Stiles yelled.

"Liam!!!" I screamed, trying to stop him from potentially getting himself killed.  But he didn't listen, instead he ran right up to the Beast.
